HTC Releases Gingerbread Thunderbolt Kernel Source Code (2.6.35) - Thunderbolt Android Development

What does this mean for us average users?
http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads

Better custom kernels for one. Not that what we have is bad, but devs have a better base to build from rather than other device kernels and lots of tweaking to find what works.
Better kernels can mean better roms as far as overall performance and efficiency.

Nice
Luke

Now i'll really have to try a custom kernel. Be nice to have the stock kernel available to flash also.

Does this help AOSP development?

Don't know if it will make a huge difference, but at least I have more to work with. For general ROM development, at least it will mean a more solid base for all the changes that have been made using franken-kernels. Should bring about a lot of more stable releases.

It is just the source code to the stock gingerbread kernel, so it depends on what is done to it.

hi guys whats up?

i want to ask you what the best rom now to samsung galaxy i 9000 //// and If you have any recommendations for lg p500 roms I would happy to take it....
That's up to your personal taste.
If you like a stable rom, try one based on gingerbread.
If you want to go with the trend,
try an ics-based rom.
What do you recommend?

He means that the era of Galaxy S GT-I9000 is OVER!
Now phones come with at least 1.2 GHZ dual core CPUS with more than 1GB amount of RAM meaning:
Better Multitasking
Faster Response
Latest Application support
Please notice:
Today, there is a big gamma of smartphones including android and windows phone devices and because of that some developers moved to other devices.
My advice:
If you want a fast and clean ROM go with stock 2.3.6 version.
Find one that suits your country and needs and install root or buy another phone.
Samsung caused a lot of frustration to many users for not including ICS support and that's why most developers focus on an ICS support and ICS ROMS are known to be buggy and glitchy (no offense meant to anyone).
I can't blame Samsung for not including an ICS port, it's true that ICS require more RAM

The ics ports are running very well on our galaxy, and if f***** ram-eating Touchwiz wouldn't be there, I'm sure Samsung would provide us with an official ics firmware.

Ext SD is only an issue on some ports for our galaxy, if you take all ics roms together, you get a very fast one with bugs only related to Google.

Interesting......

I came across this while Googling earlier. Seems Samsung made their RC's available somehow. Though it won't help us, it makes me wonder if there is a possibility.

maybe cuz these phones are gsm ones. and closer to the international one.
These are not official Samsung builds, these are builds by Team ICSSGS. They are basically pure vanilla builds with no additional software or modifications, except for a few to get them to work on the listed devices. Thus no Touchwiz.. IIRC, Team ICSSGS began this project in November and have had these 3 phones with ICS since January.
nvm already been stated.
If your on XDA then you know we have ICS, so who cares? Even better it's cm9. Even better Marcusant keeps kanging other ICS based builds through it.

in what ways would this help or benefit us just curious is all? is it less aggresive TW so that we have more RAM? but seeing how we already have AOSP isn't that much smaller than TW already?
Honestly, I don't think the ram in the epic is enough for CM9, it just barely gets by IMO, so tw? Sorry but no, too bloated. Even the processor has a hard time keeping up with cm9, all that TW bloat would cripple it.
And yes, I still have my epic, and I carry it around everywhere. Just permanently in airplane mode lol.

I want to learn to port or make a ROM

So I want to try and learn how ROMs work. Or maybe that's a little bit too much to start with, maybe mods and hacks and stuff. Is there any tutorials on how to start anything that has to do with development that someone has actually used and learned from and worked with him that you can point me out to? Or at least can someone tell me where I should start to be able to learn all that I need to know?
I've done some theming and editing .xml files and decompliling and stuff so its not that I don't know anything, just don't know enough.

I can teach you. What do you want to port? Blur? Touchwiz four? Xperia UI? Something less challenging?

Yes young padawan. You have much to learn in the ways of the force.
No disrespect to the OP or anyone else, but if you have to ask how then you aren't ready.
Do some research: take apart zips, find out how things work. Learn about Android as a whole (helps to also learn how 'nix) works also, Android is of course based largely on it), and most importantly trial and error.
The force is strong in this one, I can feel it. But he must complete the trials in order to fully understand the true nature of the force.

So basically I need some help that's all.
And I too see that CM7/9, AOKP and all those are the same. Especially the 2 versions of MIUI. So I would like to start my own thing kind of like sence and blur. Sence would be something I would be interested in doing since I loved my htc phones before this one, but since its already started I will try and work on something else.
Ill pm you xboxfanj and we'll see how I can start working on it. And thanks for your offer =).

AOKP/CNA/Gummy is kinda like Sbrissen mod for touchwiz gingerbread roms on steroids. Like xbox said, the AOSP thing has been done to death on ICS. All we're getting at this point is some pointless fragmentation between the roms.
UBER/Biggorn/Big Goron or whatever name your using these days , I wish you luck with that endeavor. I tried to do my own for a couple months and realized that I was updating it every other day thanks to what was getting merged in on the other roms. Too much of a PITA for me so I went back to theming.

AOSP=SGS>SGSII>SGSIII feature wise, you lost very few features if flashing sgs to aosp, little more with sgsII, but my opinion is that if you want to flash CM9/AOKP on sgsIII its better getting cheaper phone with less features (note that im big fan of plain android), since you threw some money away-you paid for smart stay, smart alert......, because sgsIII is more software focused than hardware
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Obviously, I bought GS3 because of 4.8inc HD screen and overall GS3 features. CM9 & AOKP cannot support all the GS3 features. So I would just stick to stock rom until I get bored with GS3 features before decide to flash CM9 or AOKP
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
I have used both AOSP and AOKP on my earlier HTC Sensation phone and my vote goes to AOKP there... but for S3, i tried both and atleast at this time, would stick with stock.

Opinions of stable ROM.

I'm using Dark JellyBelly, and I've found it works great. I don't see any significant problems with it. There are a couple of relativel minor ones, but nothing significant. You can read more here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716558
To get good call quality, you will need to flash the low-volume fix after you install DJB. That's easily done. It's found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24008900&postcount=531
The biggest issue I have with the ROM is that the wifi hotspot doesn't turn on from the stock control. You'll need to download Wifi Tether from the Play Market to make that work (and set it up as a Nexus One, FYI). If you can flash the volume fix, and work with that wifi issue, this ROM is excellent.
Good luck
-Dan
oh so you want stable? Stay on Gingerbread.
Sense: Android Revolution HD
AOSP: Cyanogenmod 7
you can't go wrong with these two ROMs, if you want stability with everything smooth and working, stay away from ICS or JB.
