Just rooted my Xperia Play...What now? What's next? - Xperia Play General

I just bought a new Xperia Play this past week. After enjoying it for a couple days, I decided, lets try the root.
I used gingerbreak and while most feedback suggested it would be about 5 minutes...I nervously watched the clock while each second and minute clicked by and I think I estimated it took about 8 min before the phone turned itself off by itself to reset (as the instructions suggested).
I'm guessing/hoping my phone rooted as it reset and I can seemingly access the system files with ROOT EXPLORER. I Scared me for a moment 'cause I felt it took a lil too long to load back up (thought it was bricked). But it still works.
I got SUPERUSER installed with gingerbreak, but I didn't see anything useful with superuser. I then found superuser elite which seemed to have a couple extra features which were pretty useful.
I found ROOT EXPLORER and tried that out.
I heard some people say after they rooted, they deleted some apps and 'over clocked' their phone so it is much faster and easier on the battery. I only deleted the pre-installed ring-tones. I have my own which I'm more than happy to use. The phone has 300mb total internal memory (I have a 16gig micro SD in it right now). I freed up a lil over 100mb.
I guess my big question is, "what's next". Or "what am I missing?"
The only benefit I've found in rooting this phone is I freed up a few MB in deleting pre-installed ringtones (big deal).
. What apps should I install (and why?)
. how and/or can I over-clock the phone so it runs faster and is easier on the battery?
. I could prolly review some of the apps and find some I don't need and may delete...but are there any apps which are recommended to delete (and some which are a MUST NOT delete?
. I think I found the BOOT animation (sony ericsson boot animation). What file format are the boot animations? Is it easy to make a GIF or MP4 video file to make a custom boot animation?
THUS; What can I do to this phone now that it's rooted? What's next?
ALSO, I want to know if there's a feature on the phone where I can set the phone to turn itself OFF and turn itself ON by itself at a time I select. I like to use my phone as an alarm clock rather than a standard BEEP BEEP BEEP alarm clock. I'd like to set an alarm with a custom ringtone (much cooler to wake up to).
thank you for your time.

flash kernal and custom rom ....

Not fully sure how to do that...or what that does.

how long did it take to root with gingerbreak?
Cause it wont root mine :-(
Im running stock gb 2.3.3 but i wanna rrot it.

verizon plays won't root using gingerbreak (no matter what version your on 2.3.2, 2.3.3, ect.). For just root, so you can de-bloat and such check this link out; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859 .
Or if you want to flash roms and kernels, check this link out for the paid solution; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232050
Hope this helps.

to root 2.3.2 use gingerbreak to root 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 use zergrush

You can overclock with SetXperia or SetCPU, I would only over clock to 1.2ghz though, 2ghz would reduce the life of your CPU by a lot.
Personally I would not use custom roms.

You still need to flash the custom kernel to overclock though and thats as risky as flashing a custom rom, although I do think the stock rom is the best since some custom roms can make you loose the ability to use the touch pads.

Thanks for your feedback guys!
I've got a;

2.3.2
to answer the other question, it took about 8 minutes.
Everywhere I saw everyone said it should be about 5 min. I started it at x:39 I think (7:39pm or whatever). By X:45, I was like, 'ok...it's been 5 min' and I thought i'd give it a couple more min before pulling the plug. Then about 2 min later, the screen went blank. At first I thought the screen timer hit, but the phone was unresponsive...then the SONY ERICSSON logo appeared.
The full reset seemed to take twice as long (but that could have been me just very excited/anxious about the process).
My other questions didn't get answered
. can I make CUSTOM boots animations (and how?)
. found an app called SETCPU which apparently helps speed up the phone's performance...but I haven't seen any notable performance boost (or stronger battery endurance).
. AND...now that it's rooted, I'm supposed to launch some ROM of some kind? Or some KERNEL of some sort.
Anyone have any information on how this needs to be done and what benefits come from this process? What does the ROM/KERNEL do?

All you can do with setcpu is underclock it cause you have sony's stock ker,nal which won't allow you to overclock. You can back up and uninstall games to free space but you need to reinstall everything to update. To use custom roms and doomlords kernal to overclock you need to unlock your bootloader. To unlock it, you must pay someone (search the forum for members who do that) to unlock the bootloader remotely. Around $24 - 30. But only having root gives you access to all the stock system's files and power.
Kernal - sets hardware limit. (overclocking)
Rom - software running on phone (boot animation)

Flash doomlord's kernel to OC your phone =) everything works fine with mine, I oc'ed to 1.4ghz on mine and everything seems more snappy

Or he can unlock the bootloader on Sony Ericsson's site? If the phone is not sim locked that is.
For your information overclocking the phone is not easier on the battery, quite the opposite. If you overclock it the phone will run faster yes but the battery will drain faster.
In my opinion overclocking is not really needed on this phone. The biggest advantage with root is being able to delete bloatware and to just have access to the whole system to do whatever you want. More freedom.

Need a good ROM...

So my girlfriend has a mytouch3g and after the 2.2.1 update she is still complaining about it being slow and locking up. So I was thinking rooting it and trying a custom ROM.
I had CM6 on my hero when I had it and it was great. Just wondering if there are any other good ROMs for some one that doesnt want to deal with the little quirks that custom ROMs sometimes has or if I should just stick with CM6 for her?
And I am assuming that SuperOneClick root is the way to go when trying to root.
Any help will be appreciated seeing as that I really know nothing about this phone.
Since the MyTouch has 50% less RAM than the Hero it will be more sluggish, the OTA really is the fastest froyo ROM out, Eclair is no better. You might as well just downgrade it to stock donut, no need to root that way.
Well that sucks. I really wish i could get something working for her. Thought about a factory reset as well.
Just tried SuperOneClick root and the phone is charging but wont say it can even mount as a storage device or that usb debugging is on. That seems odd. I havent done squat to this thing.

If you didn't flash a new ROM try just doing a factory reset and maybe use Androot instead if you lose root. Either way, see if that fixes your USB problems. If you don't want all the flair of a custom ROM, why not just root it, flash an OC kernel, and install SetCPU. I've had my phone OC'd to 614 MHz for about 4 months with no real issues.
EDIT: Just looked and saw that Androot isn't working for 2.2.1 but apparently this is.
Gonna try a factory reset when she gets home. If I was gonna root it I would need it to have perma root. I dont think running setcpu without perma root would be a good idea.

One thing you probably should do is install LauncherPro, it's a lot more smooth the the standard home screen app.
As far as OCing goes, it wont help that much. You can OC to 576MHz (~110%), you wont gain any performance by going higher (there are extensive benchmarks to back that up).
Honestly, if she's finding it unbearable and doesn't want to downgrade to Donut (which I believe is possible without root), then she should just upgrade.

I put launcherpro on it the other day and it helped a lot. Its mostly the closing of apps and going back to the home screen she complains the most about.
I tried to convince her to get me a Nexus S for christmas and then I could give her my Vibrant. Her response was "I dont want you hand me down phone I want the nice new shiny one thats better than yours"

[Solved] Temproot is good!

Hey people,
There's a lot of talk about permrooting the desire z etc. But i just want to throw this out there.
I like temproot via visionary. And i'll tell you why.
First, temproot is sufficient for titanium to back up your phone and restore it.
Second, temproot is enough to overclock your phone by running scripts in gscript. And even though you have to do it manually after reboot (ie lost root) it really takes less than 10 seconds after you have it all set up.
Third, if i've done something to create a problem (I mean temporary things like overclock, disabling packages etc.), i can just reboot and voila! Working phone again. However, i'm not sure this would make the phone "invincible" to tampering. Make sure you know what you're doing or don't do it!!!!
This is assuming you like your current ROM, like I do, and you're not too hung up on nandroid/bart backups. Personally, i prefer nandroid/bart from a good clockworkmod custom backup, but it's a tradeoff with having an almost perfectly safe rooting experience.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Yes but can you flash ROMs? Nope. It's a completely different experience once you start flashing. And you can always revert the perm root if you run into problems with the phone...
It's a good point you make.
On my G1 I tried all the CM ROMS I could try, and super d, e, and f. I loved the tweaks available and sent most nights flashing or testing ROM and kernel combos.
But in the end I, personally was essentially looking for what this current sense ROM seems to be delivering so far. Just my personal taste right now.
It was just food for thought for all those who may feel squeamish about permroot on their new phone but want a little bit more freedom.
I'm sure in a few months i'll be modding the crap out of this thing anyway. Can't suppress the inner nerd forever lol.

A couple month!? I literally rooted this and started flashing like a madman the second this was out of the box... where do you find the restraint?
HTC Vision/T-Mobile G2 w/Cyanogenmod 6.1.1&G2 Fast kernel.
Maybe I'm overestimating myself haha. When I finally got into super d on my g1 I was like "this is good, this is fast, just be happy with this" but still I was swapping ROMs left and right like every night haha
Once I was working out of town and I tried a new overclocking kernel first thing in the morning, got my phone all goofed up including my SD card corrupted somehow, used a blackberry torch to format and to get the stock Android 1.0 nbh back on my SD card, and had the thing rooted and running a brand new ROM by the end of breakfast. Lol.
Soooooo maybe i'll last a couple more days haha

I couldn't live without CyanogenMod. There is no reason to NOT permaroot.

Gscript overclocking is inefficient, if you want a stable and consistant OC with UV kernels you'll have to root. My 2cents.
I am very familiar with cm6, but I want you to covert me lol.
What makes the script oc inefficient?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
You can't undervolt for screen off profiles or change voltage for smoother performance, you can only set 1 OC speed with gscript running at stock voltage. So when you set your cpu speed to let's say 1.4GHz with gscript it is always running at that speed when the power is on, thus using more power, even with the screen off.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Hmm. I am not sure about controlling the voltages (important for battery life and cpu heat, right?), but both set cpu and system panel both show my cpu freq as changing from 245 MHz to 1017 MHz (or 1420 MHz if i want) according to demand with a good half dozen other speeds in between.
Edit: perhaps i should note that i was using the cpoc.sh, oc.sh (or ohshitttt.sh), and noreboot.sh scripts i found somewhere. They seem to work pretty well so far. I don't know too much about mflops, but i just did one and my d z was 37 @ 1017 MHz and 49 @ 1420 MHz.

Thanks for this thread. Coupled with ianmcquinn's post about Permanent Root, I made the decision to root. Less than 5 minutes later, it was done.
...and I guess, sorry for the *bump,* but I'm new to this forum and hope you don't beat me me too badly with those nunchakus.
Honestly, I don't know WHAT I was thinking lol.
Actually, at the time, none of the custom roms offered anything more than the stock rom + oc, unless you wanted aosp on your dz or sense on your G2. Now, it's an entirely different story. Thanks to great devs (siulmagic in particular when it comes to diversity) we have:
Like 10 versions of Sense from 1.0 over Froyo, to Sense 3.0 over Gingerbread 2.3.4 and everything in between.
Probably twice as many takes on AOSP, mostly from cm7, but cm6 and other AOSP sources as well.
I think there might be five MIUI roms kicking around too.
If you are newly rooted, my top 3 suggestions for exploring new roms are:
1. Virtuous Unity: The ultimate in Sense flashiness, but also very quick and stable. Watch out for Sense Paradox too!
2. Osimood MIUI: the included kernel puts it above the others (right now). Otherwise, I think all the lastest MIUI builds are essentially the same. MIUI is something totally different for android. Don't dismiss it too quickly
3. SuperCM7: a cm7 build that just feels right. Fantastic performance and flexibility.
To be honest, I'm using SenseGinger 3.0 as my daily driver right now, but I've done some tweaks to it myself. I find it to be a very well rounded contribution as well.

Perm-rooting: its like temprooting, but several times better without the headaches.

[Q] Should I root my Galaxy S2?

Hello all,
I just picked up a Galaxy S2 and have been using it with stock for a while now. I've wondered whether or not I should root the phone. The only reason or thing i would consider doing is under clocking to get better battery life.
Should I root it for that? Is there a rom which is better than the samsung stock rom because I like the stock quite a bit.
Thanks in advance.
I don't think underclocking would get you a better battery life more than disabling some services or push emails...
So yes, I suggest root for disabling services... SGSII sleep mode does good job either way...
Hello,
This is what I've done to get a better battery life :
Get VillainRom 2.0 (you need to root your mobile for that), it really increase the battery life, and this is in my opinion the best thing to do.
Underclock your phone with setcpu.
Of course you should set your phone with basic parameters, like no GPS, no Sync, low brightness.
Cheers

Well i know on the Desire Z (my old phone) I under clocked to 384 MHz and i got like 4 days battery life. I wasn't doing much intensive stuff on the device during that time but it was an improvement. As for the S2 I was able to get 1 day 4 hours and it was down to 5% with medium/light usage.
I was looking at MIUI youtube video and it looks pretty sweet, although the thread states some things still need to be done. Are their some ROMs which are 100% working order and bring some good benefits/hacks/tweaks?
What about the leak of the 2.3.4 update, i wonder how that is..
i used set cpu on my galaxy s to set cpu to 800mhz...made quite a big difference to the battery life...will.consider using it again on my gs2.

I think you should root and either flash a ROM which is known for good battery life, or at least use Titanium Back up (requires root) to remove/freeze(paid only) bloatware. There is a list of safe apps to remove stickied.
Mine is Rooted
I rooted my phone the first day I got it because I want to use Titanium Backup to freeze wi-fi sharing apps to save battery.
Just root it. If you're here, you're considering rooting your phone. Add custom ROMs and root-only apps and try everything out. The cooks have done some impressive stuff. If you want to return it, unroot it.
My first phone ever that really didn't need a custom rom. The phone just does everything well. I use titanium backup and freeze apps I don't use.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Doing the same here. Don't think I'll go with a custom ROM, but I damn sure want to be able to freeze some (stock) apps
Probably a silly question but how do you root?
Must admit am very happy with the device and when you think what it's doing no wonder the battery depletes, but it's not that bad, can I read more about this rooting?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ah that's a good point. I can root and don't have to use a custom rom but can if I felt like it. That's pretty good I think i'll do that
And what is this "freezing" apps?
Noobie question .How to unroot it and return to original kernel so that the service centre guy does not come to know that it has been rooted??
Yeah, i want to know if root is really usefull too !
I don't wanna switch to a custom ROM wich is not optimized for dual core, or doesn't contains some cool apps like Samsung Kies, or not being able to play some media files...
Noob spotted.
Yes you really have to root in order to get rid of the wifi sharing battery drain problem of the SGS2 which will eat away as much as 20 percent battery per day. With root you can also use apps like chainfire, ad free and titanium backup
I have rooted and underlocked my phone battery life has greatly improved.

I've been rooted since day 1 and I love it.

So Now Its official, I now have my very own galaxy s! Slightly used though..!

wow just had my galaxy S yesterday and it's been a day now, I must say that I'm in love with this OS which is very future proof than that zombie OS Symbian..
-This is my first touch screen and I'm having a hard time creating texts LOL
-I did a factory reset yesterday cause the previous owner still left some apps and I couldn't get into android market..
-BTW it has MIUI clock installed, does it mean it has been rooted? now I'm on the stock firmware froyo 2.2.1 JPY..
-How beneficial is it to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.5? (I think this is the latest stock firmware available?)
-How about CM7.1? (BTW I read somewhere froyo has better battery life and less lags? i do hope i'm wrong)
-My palm is always sweaty, what could be a good back cover that could be used?
-Does the 1800mAh SGS2 battery fit directly into the Galaxy S without problems of fitting back the stock back cover?
Anyways will post pictures ASAP
Love this phone!

Hi and welcome. To answer your question on Froyo, yes, Froyo 2.2.1 has less lag and better gaming performance due to more free RAM. Froyo also loads videos faster. However, Gingerbread is faster in booting up, installing apps, and has several extra functions like improved text selection.
The incentive for choosing Froyo is that it is stable, fast, lag free and has longer battery life.
The incentive for choosing Gingerbread is that it has more support for new games and apps (some apps don't install on Froyo) and has more theming and modding options, like CRT off.
If you choose Froyo, I'd strongly recommend ZSJPK 2.2.1. It has about 170Mb of RAM on boot and even after a week's usage, with games and browsing, it is lagless.
THANK YOU!

No, ZSJPK is a stock rom. I've never tried xxxJPY before, but if you find it smooth and good, then there's no need to flash a different rom.
There are apps that can lock the screen by just pressing a shortcut or widget; just search the market for 'lock screen' or something along those lines.
You can use App2SD to move apps to the SD card. For some apps, you can go to Manage Applications under settings and move them to the external SD. For Gameloft games, you can search somewhere in these forums on how to move the sd files from internal sd to external sd.
The default file manager is File Manager. If you don't have it, the previous user might have deleted it, which means your phone might be rooted already.
Wow thank you very much! So today just downloaded an ICS theme/ui from market, this is nice!
Is it possible we could have it for our phone?

Froyo 2.2.1 JPY (XEU) is the best rom I ever had (only updated via Kies). Unless you need the front camera in skype I'd stay in froyo, at least until the phone FC bug is solved for gingerbread roms (I'm on 2.3.5 now)
I would say if you want a modded ROM go to JVR and leave the jvs and jvt for a while there are still some problems there. But on the other side if you have flashing fever you don't care
Hmm i'm already now in cm7.1 and im proud to say I rooted and flashed it by myself, im playing catch up guys haha anyways yeah i was not satisfied with the 2.3.5 xxjvt cause of some issues that i forgot cause of cm7.1 lol so now im waiting for the ics port cause the nexus s owners got it already..
OT anyone tried the 1800 mah battery from sgs2?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Just to point out, if not mistaken there is no TV Out on CM7 or Miui.. you get in only on Samsung ROm.. btw XXJVT is great..look at some of the fine Custom ROm here in XDA.

[Q] Stock Ics Revert or solution - query?

Hi guys,
All this bootloader stuff is confusing me coming from an S2..
So far i have,
1. Installed custom bootloader and rooted using After OTA
2. Dont remember how, but installed Twrp 2.2
3. Installed GodMachine 81kernal using the goo manager app.
I have not used the tablet much, but have bought it recently. It came with HC and got updated to 4.0.3 as soon as I checked for an update.
The tablet was fine, had no issues and was running smoothly. Maybe it was the Amoled effect or a higher ppi in the phone, i felt the animations were a tiny bit juddery while entering the menu for the first time.
Thought it was maybe due to lack speed, hence did all of the above.. oc.ed to 1.5 ghz
Even after the OC, the UI felt the same, used antutu as a benchmark. As soon as i installd the mods, tablet became very laggy and choppy, hence deleted the Z-ram file.
On stock ~ 5000 and above.
After mods - no oc - 4800~4900. Sometimes the scores go as low as 1200.
Oc - 6800~7000, as earler scores some times go as low as 1100-1300.
Also.some times the tablet becomes laggy soon after starting and i have newly noticed that everything on the Sd card is getting duplicated, i.e another copy is being created with the same file names and same size files, but diff icons.
Since the all the above did not yeild any usable results for me - I think the tablet and the stock ICS are fine, the UI thing is an android trait (project butter in Jelly bean eliminates the UI thing i am talkibg abt)
Tested an s3 on Ics, same UI thing that i felt, but not that noticable due to screen type and size
Hence, i feel reveting everything back to stock would be a gud idea for me as i just play nomal games and watch movies, even though i like the idea of 1.5 ghz X 2 when wanted for benchies.
So ti get back to the stock 4.0.3, which file should i use? there are soo many of them.
1. Which one.s the latest one? Pre rooted, deodexed and zip alligned also would be helpful.
2.How do i install CWM? Cause when on stock, i tried getting into the recovery, an android image showed up nothing happened. I prefer to have CWM over others cause it is familiar.
3. What advanteges will an unlocked bootloader give over a locked one for skme one who prefers a stock rom? Is it manditory for rooting?
4. Any clues about the Sd card issue? also the galary is gettin my google images up, the sync is off, but j cannot turn iff the jndividual syncs.
5. What package do u suggest for some one like me - i do not want the tablet to freeze and just want a smooth Stock like experience along with any benifits if any (but not at the expense of the battery)
Thankx in advance guys.

Update -
Disabled Acer Meida, 3D photo viewer and disbled the photo syncing. Tablet is gud and fluidic now.
But while watching youtube @ 720p using Dolphin browser, the video sometime freezes and comes back again. Audio is fine. any ideas why this might be happening ?
I also found this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839313
I guess I can use it to make every thing stock if I feel like. Stock - bootloader, Unroot, Stock kernel & Stock 3.1 HC .Then OTA to ICS.

Thats also whats happenning to me I own an s2 and this bootloader is killing me but not only that, the support here on this section is pretty low, Im seeing a lot of ppl with unanswered questions unlike my beloved s2 section here on xda, so I might not root my tab after all due to the slow and maybe none supported helpers here to help you.

And this attitude is the reason why some people don't wish to help. You have to understand;
1. Everything here is free, and nobody places any pressure to use it.
2. Most issues that users have, concerning bootloaders and CWM, have already been answered multiple times. (search button)
3. People have School, job and family, and devote what little free time to help the others. If a person doesn't respond to a question, it's usually because;
a. They don't know the answer.
b. The problem is a repetitive one already answered (search button)
c. They just don't have the time.
To compare the 500 forum to the S2, is comparing apples to oranges. GS2 users outnumber 500 users by probably >100-1, so it makes sense there are more users in that forum.
A lot of people put a lot of behind the scenes work getting mods, kernels, bootloaders, apps, etc working for the 500/501. Not to mention they do a lot of PM support that you just don't see.
So give some folks a break. Most questions here get answered.

This is normal behavior. Use of a third party launcher might clear this.

You can OC to 3ghz and the UI will always feel the same. OC has no effect on the UI, but only on games and some graphic intensive apps. You seem to misunderstand what OC does. The large benefit, is UV and some of the newer governors like lultzactive and savagedzen. These are designed to save battery without a performance loss. Also, depending on governor, benchmarks can actually decrease the more you run them. And benchmarks, are never to be trusted.

This is normal as the android system is obviously doing something it couldn't do when it was sleeping or turned off. The ghost icons are pretty normal, as I have them also. You can see which ones are the real files. No explanation for it, but I'm used to it. This is just how "windows" sees things. I would guess it's kernel/bootloader related, but if tht's the worse that happens, I can live with it.

If you only want benchmarks, and aren't interested in gaming or battery life, why bother OC? The primary reason to OC/UV is to save battery and have better GPU performance.

Disabling those, and others, is always a good start. Probably explains a lot of your problems. As with Dolphin and Youtube, good luck. Not much better browser, although Dolphin has a habit of just closing out.

Thanx

Thankx for the help man...
I did not have the chance to really spend quality time with the tablet till now, leave alone tweaking it...
I know that OC is not the key and Jelly bean is - but no harm in trying
Got a chance to test two Asus Terga 3 Tablets, both factory reset, one updated to JB & one on ICS.
Did the UI thing side to side and - woila !!! Project butter Shines )
I will post my developments in this thread, cause in a few days i will finish my engagements and will become free.

Naw, it's ok Mate.
Everybody thinks that OC is the way to go. But really, it only benefits games, some films, and battery (UV). The 50x series is pretty good about battery once you learn battery management with the help of a good UV kernel. (but hey, I like benchmarks also )
As with the momentary "stutter" when first going into the apps drawer, I can say this, get a third party launcher. Or, do some V6 Supercharge.
Also, as with my 701, under ICS 4.0.4 I had the same stutter. The JB update fixed it.

Guys,
Most of my UI thingies solved !!!!
Just installed the Nova launcher, meddled with the settings and UI is now as smooth as silk..
I noticed that every time i start up the tablet, every thing is laggy- even the audio.pop's
I found the reason for this- the governer, as soon as i change it to anything else, every thing becomes smooth...
If the interactive governer is set after changing it initially, it still remains smooth... one can just select anyother governer (lulzactive) and use set on boot option in cpu master it anyone else has the same problem..
I went for a clean up and messed it a bit
First installed a stock 3.1 from the thread mentioned in the earlier post... but turns out a non WW package does not update OTA if outside the Us (Australia), by this time messes the recovery, hence ended up installing cwm all over again ( thanks to Moscow Desires thread+latest frimware file ) and installed the latest stock 4.0.3 + apex launcher..
