Do you think Defy (MB525) has any chance to get Ice Cream Sandwich update?
Do hardware limitations (477/512 RAM) make it just a dream?
22 Oct - from the official Motorola Mobility Twitter account:
@laarsnl We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it
Sources: See GSMarena .com and Twitter
I think we will get it at least with cyanogenmod. At today google and Motorola are the same things.... I don't think that they doesn't want to update their phone....

Nokia, as we knew it, RIP. Elop drove it back 15 years in terms of market share. Microkia has an year to prove it will be a world player or it shall follow the fate of SE and Siemens Mobile.
As we're in a Defy forum, please, do not continue with off-topics.
on topic: we didn't even get an update to 2.3.x android, and you are expecting an update to 4.x, don't be ridiculous.
maybe and just maybe the devs of cm like their defys so much and we all are giving them so much money through donations that they will make an cm rom based on android 4.x...

well if it makes cm rom better and defy users happy. Why not. Same as ICS or windows, they make them because they get money out of it and it makes people happy. If somebody us not happy, read below
Got a Headache? It's all in your Head.
I still thinking ... but Defy is likely no chance using. 800mhz quite slow for something like ICS.
Ah, and today's new's that Nexus One don't get the ICS Update, but Nexus S do. What's the difference between them ? Snapdragon and Cortex A8.
Defy+ seems have Cortex A8 too... like the Nexus S. So that's good news for Defy+ users.
^ What a bull**** talking about ?! Defy, "+" and many other phones have TIOMAP 3630 clocked on different frequency. In Nexus S and Defy+ is 1GHz in Defy is 800MHz it's exactly the same CPU and ICS will work pretty well. When code of ICS will be released CM9 will give to us ICS with great performance, no chance to official update since "+" is on the stage.

theres a huge difference between the two hardware (other than the screen): the nexus s has powevr sgx540, the defy only has sgx530... lets not call those the same. and the nexus s is an official google phone, so its totally different. but yeah, since any phone that is capable of running gb, will handle ics, so the defy+ most probably will get the new android.

yeah, totally forgot that.
But they don't cause so much problems right ?
Motorola say they will always do at least one OS update on each new phone.
Defy has has its already. So nothing further there.
Defy+ however, shipped with Gingerbread, so it's extremely likely it will get ICS as its designated update.

I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them
try and get as many people as you can too do the same. It will make a difference.
I'd wait until ICS is released. As things stand today, Atrix has the latest Android version available.

The Atrix is really close to being officially supported by CM. Once ICS is released and the CM team makes their latest version (will be CM9) it will have ICS and will work with with the Atrix.

They got tons of flak for promising gingerbread for the Motorola Milestone (gsm version of OG Droid) and then saying nevermind. Mind you, this was merely 1 year after the milestone came out as well. Gingerbread for the Atrix was inevitable. Not giving the Atrix gingerbread would be a PR disaster. What people fail to realise about a CM port of ICS to the Atrix is that if Moto decides to EOL the Atrix after only a year with no ICS upgrade, you lose out on updated drivers, kernel, and baseband. Sure we'd have ICS, but it won't run as well as a phone that natively has ICS.

Most likely it will not recieve ics but click the link and keep checking it. Or if u dont feel like clicking it heres what it says.. A note about Ice Cream Sandwich: We are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices
I dont understand why the atrix shouldnt get the 4.0 update when we have great top shelf specs but i bet the sensation will get it and we have the same processor speed but the atrix has more ram so were more then capable of running 4.0 but i guess because the atrix 2 is out thats a shame will we get it with cyanogen tho?
Yes we will get it with cm9 its an officially cyanogenmod supported device but the atrix 2 kay not even get it. But both might as well not anytime soon though. They want too release new devices with ics so people will buy them and they make more money. They dont make money updating current phones too ics
Still no GB here in UK & I doubt it ever will - So no chance ICS.
Motorola are too lazy & want you to buy a new phone with each software update - So I am gonna do that - I'm getting the Galaxy Nexus. Stuff moto
I don't think most of us are too concerned about an "official" ICS from Moto..but rather getting a port of some sort.
1. Wrong section.
2. There are many threads about this already.
3. Please view motorola's official website about upgrades for future reference.
4. Motorola only stated that 4 devices, excluding Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 will get ICS but did also mentioned that it is possible that other devices MIGHT be added to this list.
5. CM9 can get us a port but the drivers will not be optimized for ICS as Motorola has to optimize them for ICE first. Therefore, even if we get a ported version it won't work at it's full potential.

For all Vision/G2 users that are unsure or doubting that we'll get ICS on our devices this should EASE YOUR MIND!
source for those wondering: https://plus.google.com/117962666888533781522/posts/XzbMYgotkmy
also, xda is a pretty demanding crowd; i don't know if 50% certainty will ease their minds
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/progress-on-cm9
According to that post, the MSM7x30 chip is in their scope of support, so it's more likely than just 50%.
It's 75% according to comments. Even if there is no official support, there are always resourceful developers. I've been using CM7 on my Defy for a long time before official support came.
By the way, that flowchart was a semi-joke. It's not meant to be totally definitive, but it does give an idea as to CM9 main requirements - i.e. 512MB RAM and an ICS official release on a device with the same chipset.

It probably helps that we already have some fairly successful ICS builds on our devices. I've been running Andromadus v13 for a little while and it works really well. There are just a few things that need to be worked on (like the camera and gps lock). But for normal tasks, it runs really smoothly.
Yep, if no official CM9 ever comes Andromadus should be able to last me until my next phone.

Does this mean the Razr has a 75% chance of getting CM9. Am I understanding this right?
From Motorola's official blog
Code:
You’re not alone. Good thing we’ve got a page for that. You can get the latest software upgrade news on our refreshed page.
You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.
Happy upgrading!

If any other company said that, it would be valid. But lets ignore Motorola's track record for a second. Why the hell arent the Droid 3 and Droid X2 on that list? They're both effectively the same phone as the Atrix but with 512mb of ram. Even the cut ram should be enough to run considering the Nexus S and One V run it pretty well.

Probably the same reason the the Bravo is only 2.2.1 and the Defy is 2.2.2 and Defy+ is 2.3.6. Oh and they both have 512mb of ram, same processor, and the biggest difference between the three is the camera module. Should I mention that the Droid2, DroidX, Cliq2, Milestone2, Bravo, Defy, and Defy+ are all almost the same phones with different camera modules, different radios, minor differences, and some happen to have a hw keyboard? They can all boot each others custom roms with some tweaking.
Its so we'll buy newer, better phones with updated systems.
And it is enough ram. My Bravo runs CM9 pretty damn smooth with almost no issues other than some flash problems. Damn locked bootloaders.
I'm putting the blame on MotoBlur. If the Nexus S can handle ICS, then the Atrix most certainly can...

Unless google sees potential in this blur thing, and since they have their own social network they probably don't. But isn't the whole point of blur social integration? What's googles solution to that or do they feel its a non issue?

Blur will go away now Microsoft has reamed Motorola in court over it. Might take some time, but I don't see Google/Moto paying Microsoft anything in the long term to keep using it in the US.
Aww, but I liked the social parts of Blur! I also hated everything else about it. Don't suggest any third-party widgets, though.
this is a joke, even my htc tattoo is running on ics which has only 256 mb ram and 512 mb rom
