Xoom or Ipad 2

Kinda curious since I'm gonna be getting one of the above next month what do you guys think about the iPad 2 vs the Xoom?

I have a Xoom right now and love it...just needs some apps. I wasnt terribly impressed with the ipad update - the hardware is nice but no updates to IOS, that was severly lame. Honeycomb is far more useful on a tab...but without apps it will suffer. They should have released the SDK sooner.

I definitely agree with you on the apps for the Xoom, I dunno though I think the Xoom is probably a bit more useful but I don't really like the UI that much.
Also I think the iPad has better multimedia support so I might go with that I'm not sure yet.

I am taking the ipod 2. Not enough tablet apps is a big issue (100 odd vs 65,000 is easy too big a gap). I want android to win but my wallet also won't go for a more expensive tablet either. And I want a wifi only version of the xoom since I wanted to tether it. I'm not going to pay for a data plan twice.

I agree with him too. I'm not getting one till the end of April but still at the moment for me personally apps, multimedia support, and I don't really like the UI of honeycomb as much as I like the iPad's at the moment.

Agreed. I'll probably end up buying an iPad 2, but might sell it if the Android Tablet App Market really starts to take off. What's the point of the tablet if I can't use it like I want to use it? I want Honeycomb to succeed though, but I am not going to be an early adopter in this particular segment.

I have a 64GB WiFi iPad and the apps make or break a device. You can have better specs, and even a better OS. But without quality apps, the device will suffer.
Some of the apps I use on a daily basis on my iPad are Pages (Wonderful full blown word processing app), Penultimate (Notes), Evernote (Notes again), and of course some games, like Infinity Blade (Amazing graphics!)
I won't be upgrading to an iPad 2, possibly the third generation if it has the rumored "retina" display. It would take some powerful hardware to pump out graphics at that resolution. And an amazing battery for that matter. Speaking of battery, it was the #1 reason I went with the iPad. I can easily make it through an entire school day and come home with 80% left My Incredible, not so much. It usually ends up at 30%.

I was going to get a xoom, I want to get a xoom. But as everyone else has stated, without apps, what good is it? If the Android Tablet Market takes off within the next couple of months, I may go with it, if not, I believe I will be getting an iPad 2. I am against everything Apple, but when they come out with a quality piece of electronics, and it is supported correctly... well you can't argue with that.

I have a NookColor (rooted).
Buying an iPad2. Full HDMI mirroring for everything. iTunes DRM so I can play my digital copy movies. I don't want to pay for a 3G radio when I'll tether to my DroidX. This made a lot of the decision for men.

lol I forgot about DRM I have a significant number of songs with DRM.
On a side note white or black iPad.

the white one reminds me of old macbooks... which look kinda gross after about a year of use.

Also, I am going to wait until HTC makes me the tablet of my dreams before I jump on the honeycomb train. HTC Flyer 2, anyone?

I thought about the white getting dirty too but I might still try it if the screen protector covers the white portion as well.

I am personally going with the ipad 2 wifi (tether, not paying data twice) because of support in general, especially apps. Plus that way I can experience both iOS and android apps. And finally a relative has the xoom so anytime I need to I can use it

i have the option to get the iphone with verizon and have no desire to play with that OS. it is outdated and less functional.. for the same reason, i have no desire to get a larger version of it... just doesnt do it for me.. then again... i am not so sure i like this whole tablet craze anyway... id rather a nice laptop.. touch screens are nice, but type this current post on a tablet and tell me you still want one... just doesnt interest me.

To me Android will always be better for me than anything apple. Its more about what i can do with the product I buy. I want to root/reflash and customize and with an android device thats an ez task. Apple locks everything down so a geek like me cant "play" enough. Ill take an ipad2 running android to piss off apple lovers anyday XD

I'm an iPhone 4 user who was going to buy an iPad but came across the Xoom. I want to buy it but have never used Android and am concerned about updates to the UK where I live. I would be interested in hearing from fellow UK or European users of the Xoom regarding whether its worth buying it against the benefits of an iPad 2. Cheers.

In my personal opinion, I advisebyou to buy an ipad2.
I consider myself an advanced user and had numerous smartphones with all three main OSs, I had the Xoom since launched in the UK, honestly, put aside all issues with Xoom and all 'promised' advantagrs, the screen display remains the main gactor in prefering the ipad2 over all honeycomb tablets, until you compare them head to head and if you only read/watch reviews, you might be still convinced that there is no big difference, but in reality, there is a huge difference, the ipad2 display is 10x better than the Xoom. Another najor factor is the weight and size, Xoom is much heavier and thicker. At the end of the day I believe at least in the UK, you can do with your ipad2 all what you can do with Xoom as sd and usb functionalities are not working yet and by the time they are enabled, the next generation of android tablets will be out and the next major update for ipad2 is out as well.

Thanks, thats really helpful. I've seen a few head to head reviews and now looked at the Android apps on the market many of which seem the same as what I've already purchased for the iphone. To be honest, I do want something different as I'm not keen on a large iphone, however, I agree, that from what I've read, the Xoom may not be worth my while in the UK. I should wait for the next generation of tablets but want something now!!

I know a guy who sent the xoom back and got an ipad2 in the UK.
i think if you have an iphone and are happy with that already you probably should get an ipad instead of an android tablet.
it's also a little sad with updates for anyone outside the US for the xoom - transformer has better update-policy it seems
to get around that you can flash the US image on (for wifi) - 3g ones take a bit more effort from what I read

Yeah I've read on the forums about flashing or rooting, which I'm assuming is another method of jailbreaking but to be honest I just want to take it out of the box and be able to receive the same as USA customers. I like the thought of being able to attach an external hard drive as I assume, this would make it easier to transfer video over as aside from comics, I want to take it on holiday in case the hotel room tv is rubbish! I'm not keen on having to convert or watch films in apples preferred format as all of my stuff is in avi.
Ive seen the Xoom online for just under £400 for 32gb and I assume the future option of a 32gb SD capability so really tempting but think I will order an ipad today or tomorrow and guess when its time to change in a few years the market will have matured a little. Thanks for your help all.

I have a nexus s so went for a xoom tablet, since you have an iPhone I would suggest you stick with an apple tablet.

Essentially the Xoom is a nice device which takes a bit of dicking about to make work the way it should. Once you've completed that process, it's probably more capable than the iPad 2, but for consumers who want something that works out the box the iPad is the better product. Android for tablets is currently where Android for phones was back in the 2.0 days.

I do love my xoom but my two biggest bug bears are 1 the screen, not so much the overall quality but the reflection from light and it just attracts finger smudges.
The second is the lack of MS Exchange support. There is nothing that comes close to the apple and microsoft usability for email and calendars. Ive tried almost every app and nothing works in the way exchange is designed to work.
Yes i love my xoom, the apps are being developed and improved daily, android is very customisable over IOS even without rooting, the tablet is great and works well with rdp apps, few good games and great fr browsing the net. The fact that someone somewhere has probably created an app for what you need (with the exception of exchange, although some of the apps may work for you). If you are looking at replicating iphone apps then you may be disappointed with some, even well known apps may have slight variations, logmein is one that has greater functionality on IOS, the ipad version is far better than the android versions.
The ipad works much better for video, like steve jobs said, why would you want to waste time re-encode video, click click and your done with ipad.
Standby battery is far better with ipad as well but constant use is on par with ipad. Find myself charging xoom every two or three days, when u was using an ipad 1 i got a week of use with breif browsing and receipt of 60 to 80 emails per day via exchange.
Need to work out what you want from the tablet. Post your uses and we can advise.

Thanks. I think my mind is sort of made up now. I originally wanted an ipad 2 for comic reading and possibly the odd video to watch as my iphone covers off lots of stuff for apps. My brother suggested looking at alternatives as the ipad is an expensive bit of kit for what I want. To be honest, I know that whatev er I buy, I want restrict it just to comics etc and will end up using it for all and sundry.
After some research, I feel that the Xoom is the best alternative at the moment but I mistakenly thought 'other' tablets are like mini laptops but some of the base principles such as apps are the same as the ipad format although appreciate I'm being simplistic.
It feels after lots of reading what others think, that the Android market is very exciting and certainly something that I want to get into but I think the next releases will have less challenges. One thing that has interested me after reading over the last few days is the apparent 'animosity' between some Android and Apple users. I dont get it?? As someone in his early 40's I think all of this technology is exciting and I think most of what is on sale is just a matter of preference without many major differences. I think the iphone is the best phone ever, however, I'm sure if I had picked up an Android first, I would have thought otherwise!

hi. i finished school with good grades so my dad told me he will buy me what i want (but not ANYTHING like 1000$ or something)
anyway, i told him i wanted a galaxy tab 10.1
i waited until it arrived then i was going to go and buy it then my bro told me "Do you really need it?"
so i head to the store and before buying it i remembered what he said and i headed home without buying it.
it have been days and i am over my head thinking and especially that i can buy anything else" i need" (but idk what i really need) and that my dad offered me to deposit in my bank account the same price of the tab in case i did not buy it.
here is why i want it: games, web browing , chatting.
do i really need it ?

If you don't have smartphone it will be a whole new world for you and you will love it. Now if you are a techie with a lot of gadgets its simply going to be an accessory, a very convenient one still. then comes all the in depth customizing. It could most likely eliminate the use of others if you can find its use. At the same price you can get a good laptop or even a better super phone. Its all up to your standards of living, if you can use such a product productivly and willing to put the time into getting to understand the product, standard ergonomics.

i had samsung 7, and now 10.1. For myself i would buy it again. But it wont answer your question.
Read following feature list. If you will use following features regularry, its for you.
- reader : comfortable way to read books ( write anot.) you can keep thpusands of books with variouse format
- light weight : important, if you travel often
-good access to internet, mail, exchange
- remote access over vpn to remote desktop etc
For me, it is useless to have netbook. I have also laptop, but heavy i7 proc, 16Gssd. Its hardly portable, but i run on it network simulation.
Personaly if i would be fresh graduate, i would wait. This market is really new.

I love my Tab but if you don't have a computer or a laptop I would get as lightweight of a laptop that you can afford. A 14 inch screen around one inch thick would be a great portable sized one, I have an HP that size and it is great.
But if you do have a computer/laptop already then the Tab would an awesome addition, but it is really a toy IMO.

I love my Tab. I never bought into the smartphone craze, mostly due to the price of data plans, the Tab allows me into the world of smartphones, just on wifi instead. Between Netflix,games, browsing on the net, reading Game of Thrones on the kindle app, RSS readers I have not used my computer nor my PlayStation all summer long. With all the customization I am very happy with my decision, save for no love from an actual Netflix app or HBO GO.

I say yes and here is way. Tablets are changing the consumption of media, and they do everything from web browsing, email, IM chat, video calls, movies, tv shows, games, media storage, news, books, and on and on. My gtab is playing second fiddle to my iPad right now but it is a really nice convenient way to be connected.

You say you don't really know what you need...so it sounds like there's really nothing you need. I suggest you do buy it! It's pretty sweet! You could use it for many things on a daily basis. You said you finished school, I don't know if you're going back or not, but you can also use it to take notes in class instead of wasting paper.
If you buy it you have 14 days to return it without a problem. If you buy it at a Best Buy they won't even charge you for a restocking fee so give it a try!

I was always an apple person and was super excited about the ipad until I discovered it was basically a big phone. So I waited for something more approaching a computer to come along and finally decided on the tab.
Pros
1. Super light weight: makes my netbook seem like a brick. This is majorly useful for heading out of the house and for holding while lounging around or whatever.
2. Fast for email and web browsing.
3. Emulators - plays snes and genesis games... what more do you want.
4. Touchscreen - with keyboards designed for honeycomb e.g. thumbkeyboard it is surprisingly easy to type. Browsing etc feels great.
5. Always on and ready to go (though mac laptops / chrome are simillar)
Cons
1.for writing it is still not quite able to give a good experience (though that should be obvious) it struggles with large documents and Google docs is badly implemented. For instance I was reading a manuscript on here marking places that needed editting using polaris office (included free). It worked nice as a reader but did not inform me that it failed to save the last 20 of my 60+ bookmarks.
2. More bugs and lag than on a fully fledged computer, but not too bad.
3. Not post-pc enough to justify purchase over desktop or laptop depending on what you already have - in terms of what you can do, the tablet is no replacement for either. But if you have them already you will find you use them far less.

My suggestion (as a GTab 10.1 Owner) is... don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1
Get a Nook Color... root it, overclock it... etc... you'll learn much more this way and you'll save several hundred dollars
... or get the original galaxy tab 7, which you can find for less than 200 dollars on craigslist.
and maybe get an ipod touch with your extra cash and have the best of both worlds. I dunno, up to you.
Either way, at this point 500 is too much to pay.
I'm disappointed there is no official netflix app, no official google voice support... lack of quality tablet apps, and I'm worried about Samsung supporting the device once the next version comes out.

Consumption v. Production
Nice contrast between pros and cons. About the question, really depends on what you plan on using it for. I think the tab is more often used for information consumption versus production. I use it for work as a sales rep to view email and work files quickly and easily. I tether it through my HTC Inspire and almost always have it connected. Again, more for information consumption versus production. However, I know there is a docking keyboard I may get down the road, and not carry my laptop anymore! And, its cool to pull up videos/pics/industry news on the spot to show clients without the hassle of booting up a laptop...

No. You NEED a computer if youre attending another type of schooling. I'd get a tablet later because having a computer has more uses especially for school, where a tab(especially a HoneyComb one) is for play and mobility(or as I call lazyness).
When I had my iPad, I used it for internet because I was lazy to get my laptop out. Went back and returned it (I'm 16, so I have to be allowed to return regardless, within the return period, this case being 3 months ), thought I wanted an iPad 2, bought a laptop, and don't regret it.
Laptops last much longer if you buy the ones $600-$900(they are mainly above average these days).
In short, GET A LAPTOP, THEN A TAP YOU REALLY WANT LATER, like a quad core one hahah.

I have all 3. This is order of how much I use each device.
Laptop > Netbook > Tab 10.1
Laptop is still the best for overall productivity.
I like my tablet, but there is no way it could be my only device.

For games, get an iPad.
Big MMORPGS, got a Laptop.
Web browsing, a 15-17 inch laptop.
If you want it to be portable, iPad/XOOM, Tab 10.1 is too thin and easy to snap, also doesn't take a memory card, XOOM does.
Chatting, all will work.
If you don't have a dual core phone, get a laptop, but get a good one, my Toshiba Satallite for $600, dual core at 2.3 ghz I believe, 4 Gb of ram, 640(really 500)gb hard drive, etc. I don't regret picking my laptop over the iPad 2. Yes, I've had iphone 3g since launch, the 3gs, then 4 until February, had android since(like 5 android phones, all getting better).
I have a strong feeling you will be happy with a computer over a tablet. If not, you got 15-30 days to return But you will want a tablet. go play with a tab at bestbuy, not a game, just see what it can do, the speeds it does. My dads employee lent him a 10.1, I played with it for about 10 minutes, then got bored. Go try it out, tabs are limited, not computers.
If none of that made sense, I explained why to get a laptop.
To answer your Original Post(no, I'm not lazy, I wont us OP), GET A LAPTOP FIRST, THEN A TABLET LATER.
But seriously, he might be right. Do you really want a tab? Go play with one first then tell me what you think.

This is the best advice in your case. Unless you already have a nice laptop, get yourself a MacBook Pro, because you'll need it for any school related and/or creative projects you will embark on in the future. Throw Parallels, then Windows, and any games you can think of on it, and you'll be set for a while. MBP may be approaching your dads budget, and I feel for him, but a 13" at Macmall/Microcenter with $50 8GB ram upgrade from NewEgg is the route I'd want my smart, savvy son to take.
If your laptop shreds already, tell dad to find you a $99 HP Touchpad, and spend the rest on an educational father/son trip to Vegas. ;D

WTF? That's a reason for NOT buying a Tab? Because it'll be more likely to break by putting massive force on either side?
I'd also like to see a survey of how many Xoom or Transformer or Iconia users actually, you know, swap SD cards on a regular basis.

A tab 10.1
and an HTC evo...
I use my laptop quite a bit 4-10 hrs a day
phone about 2-5hrs a day
tab 10.1 >2 hrs a day
so in the end was it worth the 499.99 no, am i glad i bought it yes.
im the kind of person who always has to get something when i see it that looks cool...
I do love how fast and easy it is to surf web and stream music. once i get the logitech Zagg bt keyboard case will i use it for school, yes. I would much rather carry that around than a 17" laptop...
The tab is very convenient when in bed and doing some last minute XDA reading (lol i love this site) or when playing a game on my laptop, to be able to look up something w/o having to ALT+TAB is wonderful... idk about some people but i think its pretty snappy when it comes to browsing the web (w/ dolphin browser)...
start with a laptop or a MBP (they are nice but im still a M$ person) if you go with a Windows machine check out HP's website they always have great GREAT deals on high performance laptops (HP makes very nice laptops and you would be wrong to think any less IMO)
(tons of free upgrades and i think they still have the deal going on where you buy a laptop and get a free 4Gb Xbox)
I love my Tab... only downfall for me is the homescreen/launcher (TW) is pretty laggy... esp when moving apps or creating shortcuts

Here's what I'll tell you,
Tablets are a great internet viewing device and fun to pay games on, but they are more of a filler between a phone and a laptop. If you do not have a laptop or your own computer I would suggest the computer.
At this point in time, if I were you, I would get an HP TouchPad for $99 (if you can find one) and play around with it. If you like it then good, if you don't you can sell it on ebay for most likely more than you paid or keep it because it is only $99. Then you have the rest of your money to get a laptop or Galaxy Tab if you find the need for them.

Should I trade my iPad?

First off, I have an android phone, motorola atria.
I have a 32gb wifi iPad, and a chance to trade it for either an acer a500 or samsung galaxy tab 10.1 4g. It would be a straight trade. Would you do it?
I like the apps for the iPad, and there are great games for it. This is my only major road block right now. Hardware wise, I would trade for either one easily, but it's the software side that's keeping me from the simple trade.
Are there apps for android that are specifically made for tablets like iOS and their "hd" version of apps?
It seems the quality of apps and especially games are better right now for iPad?
Ps. In general I do prefer android, I would never trade my atrix for an iPhone. I'm speaking just tablet wise right now.

Go to bestbuy and try the tablets out. The ipad is an awesome tool but it's not for everyone, just like the android tablets. Ultimately you will have to decide what you like best. They are different and you should never buy an ipad and expect it to be an android tab and vice versa. They approach the same problem in very different ways and you should decide which way you like best.
Most apps scale very well with the tablet. I have had it for a couple months now and have not seen an app yet that doesnt properly work with the tab.
As far as gaming goes, most games you could find for ipad you would also find for android. There are some threads about games in the "themes and apps" section of the tab forums that you could check out and youtube to see what they are like.
One thing that I really like about the tab, as far as games go, that i'm not sure the ipad can do is connect to your playstation controller, or a plethora of other gamepads that are out on the market. I hooked my tab up to my 55" tv the other day with hdmi and played shadowgun with my ps3 controller on the big screen.

Both are awesome and it boils down to what you want / like..
I sold my iPad2 for the Tab 10.1 and am very happy that I did...

You came to the Gt10.1 forum on XDA to ask us to compare the ipad to our tablet? For your sake I'll assume you're not trolling or trying to start an android vs ipad fight, but really, you're not asking unbiased people here. Did you really think anyone here would tell you to get an ipad? I'd say try them both out and make your own decisions (and for gods sake please don't post your preference here).

I bought the iPad2 and while it was the most liberating experience I've had in mobile computing, ever, it was within a week that the limitations and annoyances of iOS and Apple's whole mindset drive me crazy. I no longer needed to carry a big 17" or 15" laptop, but I wasn't allowed a even a basic file system, and anything I transferred had to be done through the most buggy app ever - iTunes. Yes, you could use DropBox, but only for apps that supported Dropbox. And everyday, as I tried to work on it, it drove me crazy and infuriated me that the device was so close yet failed so hard.
I had the 16G Wifi. I decided that I would sell the iPad2 and buy a used 16G Wifi GalTab 10.1 - an even trade was perfectly acceptable. I ended up selling the iPad2 for $400 and bought a two week old 10.1 for $300.
I only have two annoyances, and unfortunately, both of those can only be solved by rooting (which is only a problem if a person doesnt WANT to root) and that is that Styluses dont work properly on 10.1 w/o specific tuning (through root), and the NavBar at the bottom drives me bananas - again, removed through root.
BUT, beside those two things, the 10.1 is everything I loved about the iPad with 20,000 less annoyances. Perfect? No. But unless you are completely engrained in the Apple/Mac/iOS culture and you love that sort of enforced limitation, then the GalTabs can do FAR MORE than the iPads, just as well, and for less money.
As for apps, almost all the big games for iOS are now being made for Android, so the divide doesn't really exist there anymore. There may be a couple - maybe the ones YOU want - but for the most part, Android has most of them. The only difference are some industry specific apps. I went with iPad in the first place as I work in film, and the devs for film apps only dev for iOS. (screenwriting, slate (clapboard), storyboarding, etc) Film is mostly populated by people that think Apple/Macs are the only devices that can so anything. There are seriously TONS out there that are completely unaware that you can edit or mix sound on PC. Seriously - they think Final Cut Pro is the only program that can do it. That will change as Android grows.
One thing I liked more about the iPad that I thought that I would like more about the 10.1 - the screen ratio. I dont use the device for video playback as much as I thought I would, so the 4:3 ratio of the iPad is actually better to get work done and to read - the 16:9, while better for movie playback is awkward for web browsing, doc editing/creation, and reading.
I am 1000% thrilled I switched from iPad2 to 10.1, and the Samsung is every bit as physically beautiful as the Apple device - even w/o the real metal body.

One thing that I really like about the tab, as far as games go, that i'm not sure the ipad can do is connect to your playstation controller, or a plethora of other gamepads that are out on the market. I hooked my tab up to my 55" tv the other day with hdmi and played shadowgun with my ps3 controller on the big screen.[/QUOTE]

there is an app called sixaxis that lets you connect your playstation 3 controller through bluetooth and then you can map the buttons to have it do whatever you like. It's kinda nice.

motorola xoom vs sony tablet s

Hi,
I am new to the world of tablet & I am going to buy my first tablet & got stuck with two choices - xoom & sony tablet S (ruled out tab 10.1 due to lack of expandable storage option). can you guys please suggest on this? (p.s. - android OS is not new to me)
Also, I would be grateful if you guys can inform me about the 3G frequency band being used in xoom. Also, please let me know what type of SIM being used in 3g xoom for ex - normal SIM card or U-SIM.

Of the two, its hard to choose. The sony tablet looks very nice.
As the owner of the xooms, the display is dull and poorly calibrated, unbearably ugly heavy and fat. Shadowgun isn't completely smooth. Playable, but not smooth.
Live wallpapers does not work, UI still lag. Sony tablet also didn't get such rave reviews
You sure you need so much space? Please consider the samsung 10.1, due to the ****ty screen of the xoom I didn't even bother putting videos on the tablet.
32GB sounds enough I seldom use my sd card too.

Mine has a good screen, the weight is fine, live wallpapers work fine and ICS is on par with iOS.

The Xoom's panel is really bad.
I wouldn't think like that if I also didn't own a Galaxy S2. Comparing the 2 panels is like comparing a V12 Ferrari to a V8 Mustang on a racetrack. Obviously the Mustang is pretty and powerful, but once you have them side by side competing against each other, you come to think that the once mighty Mustang might be just a cheap POS when compared to the almighty Ferrari V12.
The other downside of the Xoom is the lack of 1080p output on the micro-HDMI port. I can connect if to my big LED TV, but all I get is 720p.
It has many obvious advantages over the Galaxy Tab 10.1, but if image output (either on its display or on TV) is important to you and a deciding factor, rule the Xoom out.

I would return the Xoom if you are not happy with it. I love my Xoom and wasnt expecting the best of the best when I purchased it. The build quality of the Xoom is far superior over any other Android Tablet out there right now. Maybe the screen isnt the best or some other asepects but that doesnt bother my. It does what I want it to do. Enjoy. Thanks

For us to better help you, I would suggest listing things that are important to you.
Then instead of people complaining about things only they care about, you can actually get some usable opinions.
Also,the Xoom uses a standard SIM. Not sure about the bands it uses.

I completely disagree with you, regarding the performance of the Xoom.
My experience is the opposite. On EOS ICS, especially, my Xoom is super smooth, fast and responsive. I have a good screen. I can do everything I want with my Xoom. I don't have all the troubles reported by owners of other tablets, including the Transformer Prime. I don't know the Sony tab but, the Xoom is a terrific device...even better than when it was first released, because of the software development.

Also have to disagree with ccain1,
the xoom is a nice product, performance wise even on stock ICS the performance is great, no lag, very smooth. apps are snappy.
as for the screen, majority say its dull, but thats because its not as contrasty as the samoleds that people regard as the holy grail of screens, the screen does the job, looks fine with movies, youtube and games. its just a heavy duty LCD screen.
they arent many niggling issues that other tabs suffer from that many complain about. (transformers dock/battery issues, 10.1s screen "oil mark" defects/all other tabs lack of updates)
Plus the Xoom, is considered a nexus device, which is why its the only tab released last year that officially running ICS. and likely will continues to receive updates.
You also gotta realize that is this complaint/fix heavy forum. Most things you read hear unfortunately will be negative, people don't come to brag about how things are great too much, only to complain and look for fixes.

it is kinda heavy tho buts a 1st Generation tab, @ 1.7lbs, same weight as the first gen ipad

Only have the wifi version of the Xoom so can't tell you anything about its 3g. Have never tried the Sony model so can't give you an opinion on it. However, what I can tell you is that the Xoom has taken me completely by surprise. I was lucky enough to pick up a cheap xoom at the airport and within one day I had rooted it and put a custom rom on it. It was really easy even for a non-techie like me. And when the ICS custom roms started appearing it was not a problem putting that on it. It's a whole new experience from Honeycomb.
All in all I can only recommend the Xoom. Unless you can get the Sony model a whole lot cheaper I can't see the reason for you not getting a Xoom

Don't get the Sony. Made of plastic, even the screen is plastic, not Gorilla Glass like the Xoom. There's no development on the Sony and is not very popular. ICS on the Xoom is very very good.

I was also considering between these two and I finally chose xoom. It is cheaper and the screen is gorilla glass.

I don't what you are looking for in the Xoom so like others I will give you my opinion based on my needs. I am middle aged business man not interested in rooting and playing games on the Xoom. I use it for travel and work when I don't need my laptop. I have the 4G version so still on Honeycomb. All the griping about lag, delays and fingerprints is just that gripes. If someone thinks a tablet should be the end all to all of the computer needs well they are not very realistic. Got a problem with fingerprints then get a screen protector or a stylus pen. Need to access your laptop from afar, download an app and there you go. Wanna watch a movie on the plane no problem works great. Do you want to read in bed it works great. Good battery life and one last thing I would rather have a little bit heavier device that is built better then save a few grams for a plastic device.

Minus that im a younger geeky dude that like to expirement with rooting and getting my hands dirty unlocking the true potential out of our devices, The only thing I hate about the Xoom is motorolas lack of not being able to give there customers the support we deserve and for releasing other newer products before perfecting the ones that have been released!!!

I agree.... I purchased my Xoom on day one and haven't looked back. With the HC upgrades and now ICS it's like I have a brand new top of the line device.
Even with all the new tablets being released I have yet to see one that is as well made as the Xoom.
