Hi all.
I recently got the a500!
I was reading the guide on how to root.
I watched the video on how to root.
I have downloaded the apk.
I have installed the apk on my phone.
I have checked unknown sources. (which clearly was done prior to installing apk)
I have enabled USB debugging.
I have gone into portrait mode.
I have locked the gyroscopic lock.
I have clicked on the apk.
I have clicked ok.
I have clicked "Root Device."
I have sat and waited for upto 20 minutes for a reboot.
I am on 3.2 firmware.
I am using app version 1.20
If you bought your device with Stock 3.2, you cant root it that way. You have to downgrade from Stock 3.2, then go from there. I suggest you read this thread very carefully before you dive in it.

Another method but i have no idea how easy or successful this is.

Thanks!
I'm going to work my way through these methods!

update!

Thanks!
I wasn't able to figure out how to get my uid.... So I moved on to the second method from the first post.
Everything went exactly as expected and I am now running a custom rom!
Thanks again!
hi I've had mine couple days and used iconiaroot as mine came with HC 3.1 then flashed cwm recovery and have since tried 3 roms!!! The root method u tried does not work after HC 3.01 so u will need iconiaroot from here
u could just install cwm with the acer recovery installer from the market nd then just install a rooted rom, or am I missing something??
if it's like other devices i've used you can't just flash a recovery like that... but maybe i'm mistaken.
and yeah fo the second method i had to dl a couple other apps, but that was fine it went well, and easy... pretty quick too.
now i'm trying to push my tablet as far as it can go!
this thread can be closed now.

I read a couple of threads before trying my first backup (Solved - 3.1 Update & OTA Full Package) Seemed simple enough. My tab is a July build with Acer_A500_4.010.07_Com_Gen2 purchased in the US. I checked the OTA full package thread and that ROM wasn't available, so I thought I'd back up the stock ROM and see if it was useful to anyone.
I Downloaded and installed:
Iconiaroot 1.3
Root Checker
Acer Recovery
File Manager HD
Did the backup according to the thread.
Rebooted. At that time I decided address the update the system was prompting me was available. I tried to unroot as was advised in some posts and got the message: "Something went wrong you are still rooted.
Tried to root again and the program hung on "Extracting"
Shut down, removed the SD card and restarted.
Checked with root checker and it said I was not rooted.
Tried update several times and it failed about 1/4 through the process each time, so I just reset the tab.
The update still fails.
Do I have a problem or is this just typical of the update service?
Thanks

Thanks a lot. That worked perfectly. I don't know how I failed to pick that up, I read so many threads my head was about to explode.
Any ideas on threads you might have read that explain where the recovery files are stored, how to identify stock, what they actually contain and the recovery process in general?
Thanks again.
Hello All,
I finally made the jump from a gTAB to an Acer Iconia, got it on craigs**** for 250.00 brand new.
Anyway, I went through the steps to do the Gingerbreak root method and all it does is sit there. It isnt doing anything but say Rooting.
It is updated to the latest stock ROM. Is there a new version I should use to root for a newer stock Rom,?
PS, I have a mem card in slot, usb debbuging and Unkonwn sources checked, usb cable plugged in.
Please help.
Thanks, SoNK

Download Iconiaroot from here.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228 its for honeycomb 3.1.
Awesome, It worked.
Thanks, Brotha, SoNK
what is gingerbreak for? And why is it posted as the way to root an a500? It doesnt work. Iconia root adk does great though.
gingerbreak was the first way to root an iconia.
iconiaroot appeared long after.
Sweet
Thanks for the help. Its nice not to have to put clockwork on like the old fashioned way on a Gtab. This Acer stuff is automated and easy.
Thanks, For the help,
SonK
If I was any good at Wiki editing, this should be mentioned that Iconiaroot should be the method to go for stock 3.1 Iconias.
not news
Its all over the forums on how to root each version of the os running on Iconia.ginger break was the first root APk to be recoded to work with this tab.
Please read very carefully before applying any mod or running any apk on your tab.there are lots of things that will easly damage your device
Good Luck.
Going to sell my Acer Iconia a500 so now i need to get everything back as it comes from factory. Right now i'm rooted with the custom rom Lightspeed 1.0.7. I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155664 and thought i could follow those easy instructions. I'm probably stupid but i can't get it to work.
First i tried with the cwm method, but i can't find a way to unroot (using Iconia root 1.3 did not work, not sure what other ways there are?) therefore flashing the Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.016.01_COM_GEN1 does not work.
Tried instead with Restoring to factory defaults via Terminal #2. installed the things needed but it wouldn't let me run itsmagic (/data/data/com.interphaze.AcerRecoveryInstaller/files/itsmagic)
Could anyone guide me as to how i get everything back to stock?
All help is much appreciated!
edit: i installed one of the full packages from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 (Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1) everything should be stock now right? and it should be possible for otas?
Even with rooted stock you can receive updates, its just the custom ROMs that won't receive it (like Lightspeed). If you go into settings, about tablet it should tell you what you are running. If it is one of the versions listed in that thread you should be good to go. Also make sure you aren't rooted and that CWM is no longer there.

Usually, you can do this by installing Acer recovery, and run one of the full roms from;

Really doesn't matter which package, but I would run a 3.2, Com Gen 1
Hi there!
I own an Acer Iconia A500. Originally came with HC3x, updated it all the way to ICS. Rooted it at ICS with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
Worked fine. The only issue is accessing Recovery at boot. (Just in case I plan on restoring the Stock version of Android, for warranty).
I first used the Acer Recovery Tool app at the Play Store. I tried one of the Recovery options listed. CWM for start. Backed up as asked, then rebooted into recovery. I was told "recovery verified failed". Did a restore, tried another method, same crap, with a time the bot with the (!) appears. Did some research on the issue, and came up to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
I did option 1 (Afterota v1.09). And flashed Recovery Twp 2.1.3/Bootloader.
I reseted back to bootloader, it didn't show "Recovery verified failed", but instead I got the bot with the (!) again. Went back to Acer Recovery tool. Bottom shows that its unable to identify the installed recovery. So I tried TWRP 2.1.3, didn't work.
My question is, how can I get this to fix? This is my first time trying to install a bootloader. Please help me step by step to get this situation fixed. I appreciate the help by any!!
i am having the same issue and have tried several different fixes without success... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
(the only one I haven't tried yet is 'manual flashing' outline here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425... will give this a shot when I get a chance and report back... from all the 'automated' or gui methods it always seems to get stuck at the flashing/copying stage...)
thanks!
Same issue...
Glad I'm not the only one with this issue... Used the exact methods you did, same results. Amazing!
i think part of the problem may be that the bootloader was not unlocked when the initial recovery was flashed? when i rooted i thought I had properly unlocked the bootloader as well, but perhaps not....? (... i thought i read somewhere that if the bootloader has not been unlocked when you flash recovery these are the results.. so i am assuming that this might have something to do with the issue?)
the question is, is there a fix?
i have been playing and experimenting more on the tf101 side... all the stuff i'm doing with this is for my wife's a500 because she liked some of the features on my tablet... i'm not all that familiar with the A500 (didn't have to deal with bootloaders separately on the tf101) so any help is greatly appreciated!
thanks!
Alright. I seem to have got it all fixed. What I did was, went back to this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425
Went to the "Automated flashing tool" / "USING blackthund3r ATX flash tool , It makes it all a little easier !" Method (below Option 2, in the middle). Downloaded V8-TWRP_2.1.3_ICS_recovery.a500apx and APX-FLASH-Tool & Manager, and followed the instructions.
It didn't work with Windows 8 RTM, (driver issue with APX), but Windows 7, worked perfectly, after downloading the Acer driver from a link in the app when prompted. All worked well.
hope u guys got sorted....
for others reading this
to install recovery from ICS you must first flash the unlocked boot loader, after that u can use Acer recovery installer, although once unlocked most of us use fast boot or the auto tools to do it
So i have a Acer a501 I got a few months back and I wanted to get Jellybean on it (or at least ICS) so I started looking around and found out that I would need to root it and install a custom rom as Acer decided not to release the ICS update for the a501. So I set out on the journey to root my tablet. Seemed easy enough following a guide I found here on the forums. And it worked! or so I thought. Turns out the rooting process installed a a500 rom on my tablet thereby disabling 3g and gps capabilities. I ignored this cause I figured I could just upgrade to a ICS rom for the a501 and I would get that functionality back. Well to do that I needed to install an ICS bootloader, another guide, this time asking for the SKB which wasn't mentioned in the previous tutorial. So I wanted to go back to stock HC and start over, another guide, the last guide telling me to how to get back to stock involved downloading a rom, decrypting it, wiping the device, and formatting the /system directory (RED FLAG) but being trusting I tried it anyway. Now I am left with a a501 tablet that stays on the "android" screen when booting normally and can get into the CWM recovery menu that was installed during the original root guide.
I have searched the forum all day and cannot find anything that can get me back to stock or even just onto a custom rom. So can someone please point me in the direction of a "noob-proof" guide or something that will step by step tell me what my options are and how to accomplish this? Alot of guides seem like they will work out but then all of the links to "REQUIRED" programs are dead. I need something current that can get this tablet working again be it on Honeycomb like before or on ICS (preferred).
Recovery I have is "ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.3(thor2002ro rev1.5"
Have a try afterota on a500 development section, try to flash the skrylax v8 bootloader first and reflash the ics rom
