Amazon will sell a bazillion of these device simply because most end users have no interest in knowing what or why something works....just that it does (and the cheap price). They are dis-motivated to explore how good their tab experience could be. Besides comparing the ipad2 to the AF is (pardon the pun) apples to oranges. Two totally different devices with different uses.
We who frequent forums like this have that curiosity therefore will probably be somewhat frustrated with devices like this in their locked down profile. While I have interest in the 7-inch form factor, for now, my NC does all I need and more.
Don't discount that we, as a culture, like "new flashy things"....many bought rocks as pets in the 80's so......we'll buy most anything....some of us will, that is.
problem is ipads are sold in almost all countries; while this seems to be biased towards the US only. Apple has stores in every mall. I dont see an amazon store in the mall. Kindle.is a name for book readers. Ipad is a name for touch tablet computers.
Amazon.needs to get this right on.first try.

$200 vs $500-900 is the reason Amazon will sell a lot. These are mobile Amazon storefronts and it means potentially millions of new customers to Amazon. Whether it sell more or less than iPads is inconsequential to adding new customers.
this and all other kindles with the nook are popular only in the US. Once you go outside a few shops sell this at a large markup because they either it does not sell or very few competing shops

True. It points to the fire being targeted at the us market. It will do very well here and lead to a lot of additional higher margin sales, which is what it is designed to do.
Free shipping and no taxes are primary reasons many people in the US use Amazon to buy things they could buy at the local stores, like coffee and tea.

You wrong on the tetheting on your phone statement. It will not work with adhoc. But true tether is a.p.All devices will tether a.p(tabs, phones, laptops, xboxes, blurry you name it it will work)
simply ginger
We'll never know.
Amazon won't release the actual numbers, just like they never did with the kindle. But this is not a direct competitor to the ipad, it's a mobile amazon storefront. I think of it as amazon version of the sears and Roebuck catalog.
More to the point..... No, it won't outsell the ipad, especially if you count global sales. It is possible though in the us market only. The backend is what is going to sell it. Content is King, not the device.

Seriously, i'm very confident of Kindle fire, and i think it's only a matter of time with Fire beating ipad2 if Amazon can keep its developing on Kindle Fire apps.
Stuff on Amazon is far more that you can imagine on itunes, since Android run on Fire is individualized by Amazon, i'm pretty sure many apps especailly for Kindle Fire users will be published on its website. BTW, there are far more movies and music on Amazon
Its low price is really attractive too, anyway, not anyone wants to spend 3 times more money on a ipad2 for some samiliar usage.
This is the first time i keep asking myself my i'm not living in America for they don't deliver Kindle Fire to China.

The iPad is successful because it is simple, does what 99% of home consumers want to use it for, at a reasonable price.
I cringed watching android tablet makers try to "one up" the ipad in terms of features or specs... It's as though they completely didn't get why the ipad was successful to begin with.
Finally someone realizes who buys ipads, and what they are looking for. And to compete against "...but, 5 people I know have ipads", you have to undercut on price.
And yes, this level of undercutting is tempting to way more people.
AND, might finally open the door to Android tablets that compete in the ways ipads became successful to begin with.
Lord knows Microsoft doesn't understand why ipads took off... their train is headed on a 1 year journey to a ghost town, even if they kick marketing into high gear, sadly.
Amazon is one of the first companies who does get it, and is larger enough to back it with consumer confidence, like Apple did.

$700 for the 32GB model? Hmm...
The price is way to high. $400 tops.
That isn't cheap by any means but keep in mind that the wifi model should be quite a bit cheaper than this, wouldn't be holding my breath for $400 though.

WTF is Moto thinking here?
These price leaks have FAIL written all over them. No eff'in way will you see me shell out more than $500 for a glorified internet browser/PSP. Make a port of a useful program like Eclipse and a way to write and run code... and we'll talk.
The use cases for tablets are out there, but none of them are compelling enough to price in the laptop range. I mean, this thing is a beast spec wise, but offers less than 1/3rd of the functionality. Can I write code, model 3d... etc? Damn it, $200 more and I could buy an eff'ing macbook (w/ student discount).
I'm not sure I understand who their target market its. I am in the market for a tablet, but that flat out prices me OUT of that tablet. It's a 1st generation, no history, no followers that want an upgrade...nothing like that. Everyone I know that has an iPad is happy with it and I don't think they are going to pull many from that market (especially the apple-holics). While I'm glad to see the price drop from $800 to $700.....that is a $hit ton of coin for a gadget. I know tablets are more than "just" gadgets but I'm willing to guess most of us have laptop, smartphones, and PCs....so in that sense, it is sorta like a new gadget cuz we clearly don't "need" it.
I really don't understand how they justify this price with virtually no track record.
I'd like to point the finger at Apple for this one. They've effectively set the bar for price point with the iPad and now all other manufacturers are following suit.
What these other companies (Moto, Samsung, etc.) need to understand is that Apple charges as much as they do because they can, people will pay for the image.
Android tablets, in my mind, should be priced significantly lower in order to move units and undercut Apple. Why would they ever charge more, or even the same, when Apple already has such a strangle hold on the market? I can almost guarantee that these Android tablets will be dead on arrival (as far as general public/mass market appeal) if they charge iPad prices or above. With the iPad 2 just around the corner these Android tablets really need all the help they can get, especially if they want to win over Apple customers. Even if Android has more functionality than iOS general consumers will still see the iPad as being the best option, and the result will be Android being eclipsed by the iPad 2 launch (at least for initial release).
I'm all for the potential of tablet computing but as someone stated before, and this is bang on in my mind, laptop prices with 1/3 of the functionality. So why would I pay that and why do I need one?
I really hope Moto can win me over with functionality and pricing because the closer we get to a release date the less I think I want one of these tablets.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Up until now I was 100% sure I wanted a XOOM. It's the standard that Google is using to base Honeycomb on, all of their developers have one. It's the flagship tablet for Honeycomb and they're killing it by trying to match Apple's price on the iPad. Very big mistake, and I have serious doubts on how well this thing is going to sale. Compare it to the Asus EEEPad Transformer who's prices are much lower and if Engadget is right, it even comes with the keyboard dock. I just don't understand.

Totally agree. If they price it at laptop level, it has to be able to REPLACE the laptop, so yeah, Eclipse would be cool for us devs (with a bluetooth keyboard, obviously). Although for the average user, most usual apps are available (most people have a computer for internet browsing and the Office apps).
As for the Xoom price vs iPad, in my mind it absolutely HAS to be lower than the pad. Significantly. No one in the real world is going "oh, I wish I could buy this Android Xoom tablet, but it's too expensive, I'll just go with the iPad instead...". It's the other way around, which is why it has to be significantly cheaper to steal some tablets customers. Many of my friends don't even know what's Android!
Sadly like many of you its not looking good for me getting one of these. Looks like I'll be waiting on an iPad 2. Moto really looks like they'll be screwing the pooch on this one.
You guys are mostly wrong, did you even look at ipad prices? This thing is priced competitively and is ****ting on the ipad in terms of specs, so you expect something with massive spec bump to be cheaper, I'm confused. And high end laptops don't cost anywhere around $700. You're comparing a cheap laptop to the highest spec tablet out there, nor do I believe you guys are looking at the full potential of tabs, by the end of the year your tab will be like another screen in your home with Comcast for 1 example, $700 and I'm getting one on day 1. To the Guy who said this should cost less then the ipad, that's a ****ing joke right?
Actually I don't know why I'm wasting my time, I'm in a room with a bunch of people under 10 posts lol
I thought more about this last night and this morning. I had all sorts of justifcations in mind for why I would need (want ) the Xoom and I was willing to hold out for it. But the price is rediculous and simply NOT justifiable for some.
This price has really turned me off. I'm seriously thinking about just getting a Nook Color, rooting it, and calling that good. Honeycomb was my hope, Gingerbread will be fine for $250 thannkyouverymuch.
Although I may wait about February 15th so I can utilize the 14 day return policy just in case.....the Xoom price drops

As I said, most people don't know what's Android, everybody knows what's an iPhone/iPad. They want that thing with the Apple, so yeah, it has to be cheaper than the iPad (well, than the iPad 2, obviously, the iPad 1 will drop in price when the new one comes out). I know the specs of the Xoom are crazy (but please don't compare that to a high end laptop) but just look at the reactions out there, no one's excited about the current price leaks.

Not much to add... As for where I live, hint: look at the flag... Yep, some people in the great North don't know about Android. Crazy, eh?

It is very possible to buy an extremely capable laptop now-a-days for between $500-$800. Yes the XOOM is impressive spec wise (for tablets) at the moment but a month after its release the iPad 2 will be here and suddenly Moto's offering won't exactly be "****ting" on anything anymore.
Also, I just want to be clear that I'm not saying the iPad is better than the XOOM or any other Android offering, I'm just trying to look at this from a general consumer's point of view.

This was completely unnecessary, no one is attacking you personally here. Also, a quick look through this thread would prove you wrong. Not to mention that most of the posts here bring up good points and are well written. We may have less posts than you but that doesn't mean much if you pride yourself on posting 'quality' comments such as this.
Who are we kidding? We're all buying this tablet. lol
I just hope we get it here in Canada for $700 and not some bull**** price of $749.99+ or whatever. Our dollar is par now.
I'd sure like the WiFi only version, since by then I'll have the Atrix (coming to Bell), no need for 2 3G devices.
Does anyone know if it will? If it doesn't i will be pretty annoyed.

Here's some interesting reading:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/44943?start=15&tstart=0
I particularly loved this post:
If you've been following any of the numerous blogs and news stories about the XOOM and its pricing around the internet, you'll noticed that there are a lot more 'neutral' buyers out there than there are pure fanboys. In that I'm saying that there are those people who will only buy Apple products and loathe anything Android, and on the other side there are Android fans who want to see Apple eat dust in the wake of Android's tablet dominance (which is looking less likely now.) But, in between these two groups is a much larger group of people who couldn't care less about the OS or the company and will buy according to two things.
1. The value (Price):
Let's face it. We're in an economic slump, and price will win out over features and OS. This means people are going to be more willing to buy a $499-$599 tablet with WiFi only over an $800 tablet that requres a $20 data plan and a $35 activation fee. The iPad proved this by itself before any other tablets were even dreamt of. The WiFi only iPad is by far the most popular version.
2. Reputation:
The neutral buyers in the market for a tablet know what an iPad is, what it does, and how much it costs. It's been out for a year, and it's been a huge success. They also know that the iPad 2 is on its way and that it will probably have the same price points. On the other hand, the XOOM is a new tablet by a manufacturer who has only proven itself in the smartphone market. Tablets are a new venture for them, and they haven't proven themselves like Apple has. The OS might be slick, but it's also unproven. iOS was successful because people had already been using it on their iPhones for a long time. Honeycomb is essentially Android, and it's slick, but it's still unproven.
That being said, everyone was excited about the XOOM at CES and those neutral buyers were drooling over it and ready to give it a chance over the iPad. Now, Motorola has struck out.
Strike 1: Price
$800 is a lot for a tablet, and most people (obviously) aren't willing to pay that much. I won't argue that it's not comparable to the iPad. It is...To the 32GB 3G version, which leads me to...
Strike 2: Veriety (I'm not talking colors like red...)
Releasing the most expensive version of the tablet first is a boneheaded move. Apple got it right with their teired pricing, but Motorola is trying to shove an $800 tablet down consumers throats when the majority of the market was expecting a more affordable option. It's fine to have a 3G version at $800, but it's not fine to piss on those that make up the largest portion of your potential buyers by not offering a WiFi only version for under $600. This gives way to...
Strike 3: Data Carriers
This is a big turn off for even those willing to pay $800. There's not many people who want to pay a data plan every month. It's nice to have that option, and I'm glad Verizon is doing it on a month to month basis instead of a 2 year contract, but to force people to pay $20 for a month of data plus a $35 activation fee on top of $800 plus tax is ridiculous. Going back to Strike 2, many people want a WiF only version because they are casual users who just want something to use around the house or over at Panera Bread on a lunch break, and there are others who just don't want to be tied to another carrier fee or don't want to give Verizon any of their business.

Recently got a TF101. Total surprise. My mom [52] called me a few week ago and asked me to start researching tablets. She kept insisting that they were for her, but being I'm 29, and in the XYZ generation she wanted me to do the research for her.
So last Friday my wife and i went to meet her at our local best buy, and i said "we'll lets go get your transformer" and she said is that the one you recommend and i said yes it is. So we went picked it out, paid for it, and she handed me the bag and said "merry Christmas, my Acer Iconia is at home. Still in the shrink wrap".
So Christmas magic comes though.
I'm not new to XDA or Androids, but i just wanted to drop a line and say hi, and if you see me lurking around, you'll know why.
Welcome and congrats on the new Transformer
Haha, that is really cool.
Welcome XD
Damn it, I want mine now! lol
I think I've been able to persuade the wife to let me have it Christmas eve with the reason of, it needs 8 hours charge before use
I was playing with the displays at best buy when a woman asked a worker there which tablet he'd recommend. He told her the ipad 2. She said her husband doesn't like it because there's no memory expansion. I interrupted and told her about the transformer and the upcoming prime. Turned out the sales guy had no clue about the prime or even the 1st tf. Probably an iFan. She went ahead and asked me about each one of the tablets on display. I'm actually one of the few people who have been through several tablets and know what's in what. After our conversation, she told me she'd definitely get the transformer for her husband. She said she'd talk to him to see if he wanted the 101 or the prime.
I just think its unacceptable to have a sales guy standing there who knows nothing about tablets other than the ipad.

Do you honestly think Best Buy salesmen are interested in selling products? They only want one thing, to sell you warranties and installations so that they can keep their job. Best Buy doesn't hire technically competent employees because if they did, they wouldn't sell as many $80 HDMI cables and rip off warranties.

It's really funny you mention that. I went to my local BB to buy a HDMI cable and they tried to sell me a Monster branded cable and i told them no. I wanted the cheapest thing they had. Since all HDMIs are the same. And it was forty dollars. Still a rip off so i told him I was going to buy them from Monoprice. He insisted that i wouldn't find one cheaper than that. Needless to say he was surprised when i showed him an invoice for 4 x 10 foot HDMI cables with a total price less than 20.00.
And i know for a fact that if the don't get x amount of people to sign up for the best buy buyers card per month they get wrote up.
That's a cool way to get a transforming Christmas tablet!
I know what y'all mean about the HDMI cables, every time I've looked at something like that in a Best Buy, it's always "WHAT THE ****!? I'd rather wait on the USPS."

If it makes you feel any better, there's a near-certainty that the sales guy knows absolutely nothing about the iPad either -- he just pushes that one because experience has taught him that being the most popular, it's the easiest to sell.
The salesman at big-box stores who knows even the vaguest facts about the products he's selling is a very rare beast indeed, and Best Buy in particular like to boil their products down to about 3-4 key specs at the most. As far as Best Buy corporate is concerned, anything that's not printed on their shelf card for the product is simply an opportunity to confuse customers and lose the sale -- if it's not printed on the card, they'd rather you didn't know it.
During a recent Technology purchase at a big box store, I asked about I/O ports. I was referred to their technical expert. His solution to answering my problem was to log into the store computer and give me access to the web to look it up myself. Although doing it this way assured me I got the right answer, I had to question the title technical expert.
Aich is why I make sure of data signal on store and keep a barcode scanner handy, but what does this havea to do with the OP?

Occurred to me yesterday that this could be the case: If someone owns a Kindle Fire they are probably at least a little less likely to go to the local Best Buy and purchase games, music, movies and even more expensive items like large TVs. I know in my own case my last vaccum came from...Amazon tax free & shipping free.
The Best Buys in Texas that I've been to are choc full of Kindle Fires and I can't help but think every time they sell one they're hurting themselves.
Thoughts?

The same could be said for about any type of product in any retail store.

Not at all. If you buy a Blu-Ray player are you more or less likely to buy movies?
Kindle, beyond a few accessories, what is the device going to cause you to go back to the store for? They're selling a device that functions as a catalog for the competition. Granted you could say the same about any computer but the computer brings you back for more than a Kindle will.
If the Kindle were made by Fry's would Best Buy sell it?

Speaking as a Fry s employee, the last time we had a Frys branded desktop, it was absolute junk and if anything helped propel HP sales in my store.

Just sold my Kindle Fire HDX due to the Actions of Amazon.
It is ridiculous to rip off Android software and lock it down like it's an Apple - WHO ACTUALLY DEVELOPS THEIR OWN SOFTWARE.
Jeff Bezos is the scum of the earth.
I will never buy another product from Amazon and I spent nearly $20,000 last year with them between and my business. My Prime is about to run out....and a long term loyal customer would chew out the greedy executives.
THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE A SATELLITE MAP THAT WORKS ON IT!! RIDICULOUS!!
I ADVISE ALL TO DO THE SAME.
Android was all about open source....been in it since the beginning.....To rip off an older version of Android and lock it down due to greed is the American way.
Amazon is the scum of the earth.......NEVER AGAIN
Go ahead and rip into me......YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT.

Each to their own I guess.
I for one like Amazon products and their customer service is second to none.
I also think the HDX is superb, but I did my research and knew exactly what I was buying and was under no illusions of what I could and couldn't do with it. For what I use it for, it's perfect.
You disagree, and that's perfectly fine, if we were all the same it'd be a boring place here
I just bought a 256 gig ssd for 50 bucks because I'd this thing. I'll buy the nexus 8 when it cokes out and use both
