Remapping BT Keyboard? - Acer Iconia A500

So, I recently purchased a new Motorola bluetooth keyboard for my tablet, and I'm going a little mad with the fact that I can't figure out how to use other keyboard layouts from QWERTY. In particular, I'd like to use Dvorak, but the closest solution that I can come up with is to try to remap the keys. I've seen a few other posts on remapping keys on other devices, but I can't seem to find anything that relates to the usual letter keys. Everything out there seems to be for launching apps or something else.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I'm sure that I'll have to edit some root files, and I'm ok with doing that, but I'd like to have a decent idea of what I'm doing before I go messing around with things that I don't fully understand.
Thanks in advance,
-Sam

Try adding a vendor/product id file for your keyboard in /system/usr/keylayout/ with the desired mapping of the keys. Should work for usb keyboards (haven't tried it yet), probably will work for bt ones too.

I'd be happy to put the time into doing that, but I have no experience in how to do that. Can you point me in the right direction so I can learn/ figure out how to do that?

Well I haven't done that myself but it might help looking at the generic file. From what I understand you have to map the whole keyboard with the key functions you'd like. For example when you press 'q' you might want to have 'a' coming on the screen. The hard part is guessing the key numbers (it's easy for the letters - they are in the generic file, but special keys like ctrl, alt, win, etc. are harder to find) and finding your product/vendor id. As I said that should work with usb keyboards, but I'm not sure at all if that's the right approach for bt ones. Try google before wasting your time on something that might not work at all - someone must have bumped at the same case as you.

Anybody else able to lend some help on this one?

I have the same problem : I bought an usb keyboard with an AZERTY layout but when I press A I got an Q.
Any idea to change this?

So, I've tried to follow the directions from that tutorial as closely as I can and I keep having problems. It seems like every time I try to edit the .kl file for my keyboard it doesn't work at all. It's definitely pretty frustrating spending a bunch of time editing the key and command codes for every button to find out that it didn't even do anything.
Anybody figure this out yet? I'm really struggling.
If it helps, I can try to break down what I've done so far in another post, but I'm at like 3.5 hours on this project alone tonight and don't feel like I've really gotten anywhere with this.

Gah, now I feel like an idiot. I was doing it right the whole time, the one crucial step that I messed up in the process was deleting the old .kl before pasting the new one in.
Finally got it working. I may post a tutorial on this later since others are having difficulty with this as well.
Thanks to tkolev and Judgemental for the posts and help.

My tutorial can be found here if you've happened to stumble upon this thread before finding it.

Would you like to use CTRL/ALT on your Universal? :D

Hello all,
I would like to introduce a software which using CTRL/ALT key on your Universal.
Here is a link to download.
http://1942.rocketspace.net/PQz/PQz20051119_0015.zip
Espcially, It has been designed for Japanese.(IME Atok)
(I'm not sure it works or not in other languages.)
Thanks.
OK, I'm not brave enough...

</JasJar Brick Warning>
Tom's other 2 posts are innocuous enough, and started over a month ago, so it doesn't look like someone who registered just to post a trojan.
Tom, can you tell us if you've tried this, how it works, and where we can find a URL that lends it some cred?
Here's what I could find that might help (Jap translated page). Looks like a competition to write such a proggie:
http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?h...=50&hl=en&hs=vfu&lr=&client=opera&rls=en&sa=G
Woohoo! I found a few more Jap/Chinese pages, and developed a level of comfort that this was a competition, and that the app exists and does what Tom suggests. It's AWESOME! U get a little icon on the title bar (would like to get rid of this some time), and it changes to show ctrl and alt mode. You can set different keyboard keys to be ctrl and alt, and when u press them u can now move backwards and forwards 1-word at a time and all the other things u would expect.
Nice going Tom - sorry to have been so circumspect. We would love for you to tell us more about what those darned clever Japanese dudes are doing for the Universal.
PS: For n00bies, put this exe file in your \windows\startup folder. Right-click icon for settings. Set ctrl to be your WIN key, and Alt to be your SYM key and you're a-for-away! Uuh, on second thoughts, I've no idea what the alt key does for me, so until I figure that out I'll keep my sym key as is
PPS: Sorry VJ - you were beaten to it! No worries tho, you can focus on some of the other stuff we're all dying to see...
Woohoo! Ctrl-Q,Del,A,C,X,V I expected - but Ctrl-Z is just a big fat bonus!
Most excellent! Any chance for an "ESC" key?
Wow, that's nice!
V
Hi all,
and thank you for your interest.
Last few weeks, I've been developing this app and not finished yet.
I will write a user's guide as soon as possible.
PS.heidy
I think it not hard to implement 'ESC'.
cheers

Hi francorg,
>In the setup page:
>what do the 2 IME list do?
You might be using single byte charactor like English if you don't use IME.
We japanese have to convert from single byte charactor(alphabet) to Japanese. (Chinese/Koria are same)
Alphabet <----(IME OFF/ON)---->Japanese
The settings are used for Japanese Input.
If you don't use IME. You can choose IME [none][N O].
that the best way to you.
thank you.
brilliant - thanks!
is tough choosing which key to lose though for Ctrl.... think i'll start with CAP LOCK - i've kinda got used to using Fn, Windows, Sym etc.
but finally - i can use command-line stuff like putty properly!

Great software, great guide. Thanks!
Working while keeping the ctrl-key pressed?
Great software! Thank you for that.
To make it perfect in my eyes, it would be great, if it would work as well, as long as you keep the key pressed. I would need it to jump word by word keeping the ctrl-key pressed and moving by hitting the arrow-keys. Would that be possible?

Jogi

I agree - this is how I would want it to work.
I haven't tried this software yet but I want to. Can anybody answer this question please? The user guide didn't seem to give me the answer:
Can I program the software to give me <FN> + <SHIFT> = <CTRL> ?
I.e. can I hold down FN and SHIFT to get the Ctrl function? Is that a combination of keys that's supported in the dropdown selectors? I don't want to lose an existing key to get the Ctrl function if I can avoid it.
And yes, I want everything!
Superb. Makes my Exec a whole lot more useful.
Has anyone figured out how to copy some text as any highlighted text gets wiped out when you enter 'C'
Mike
ctrl+c it just works. Doesn't clear the text at all.
is there a way to use the button mapped to Ctrl solely for Ctrl?
I use "CAP LOCK" as Ctrl, and although it works fine as Ctrl, when I start typing again, my writing is all in caps :-(

Is there way to add a sound to the opening of the keyboard?

Well the topic says it all.
I want to add a sound to the opening and/or closing of the keyboard.
Is this possible?
Thanks
Any hacks for this? I suppose that the opening of the keyboard calls some kind of an event (since sliding it open changes the screen orientation) So can this same event call be used to assign a sound as well?
I also want to kno this and was going to ask right before I came 2 see this link...so please answer!
There are some really talented people here. I would have thought someone would have done this by now. But I assume, from lack of info, that this hasn't been considered before?
Would someone, who has the skill set to do this, consider looking into it and seeing if it is possible?
Thanks a million!!
Have a good one
Try this thread.....
Cheers!
That thread refers to the Herald, or Tmobile Wing. I found this thread and thats all I've been able to find for the Wizard or Tmobile MDA.
There may be a registry key that needs to be modified/added after installing the HTC Sliding Sounds application to make it 'active' for the Wizard.
Any ideas?
Im trying to figure it out too.. I dunno how to get it to initiate...
Need someone with the Herald (T-Mobile Wing) to help
Under HKEY\LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SlidingSound there are 2 keys 'ActiveSlidingSound' and 'SlidingSoundEffect', these are for setting which sound of the 3 available to use, I'm assuming.
Anyone out there know someone with a Herald or T-Mobile Wing that is willing to share what they have in this folder in their registry?? Maybe there's and EnableSound key or something to that effect that us Wizard users can add and we'll have a happy day!

I just checked mine and under SlidingSound, there are 3 folders... 0, 1, and 2. Each folder has 3 keys... Default, in, and out. "Default" is the name for the sounds (ex: Wind Chimes, Piano, and Xylophone), "in" is the location of the file used for when the keyboard slides in (ex: Slider0_in.wav), and the same applies to "out" for when the keyboard slides out (ex: Slider0_out.wav).
Also inside the SlidingSound folder are 2 more keys... ActiveSlidingSound and SlidingSoundEffect. ActiveSlidingSound refers to which sliding sound you want to use... so in this case it would be one of the 3 folders mentioned above (0,1, or 2). SlidingSoundEffect refers to whether or not you want the sliding sound on. (0 = off, 1 = on).
Hope this helps!
I installed the software that was made by JUVS....it does not work on my MDA.
Any other ideas? I had tried searching before I made this thread initially, and i had not seen the 2 that are discussed here. I apologize for having made a 3rd one.
Back on topic, I certainly hope this can be made to work. Any other ideas?
Thanks for all the info so far.
Later
this is a really cool idea, i would also like to know how to do it...

Thanks so much! This does help!
Unfortunately, I have the same keys on my MDA after installing the application for the SlidingSounds and it doesn't make sounds when I open the keyboard physically. I'm suspecting that the MDA is missing something, possibly a hardware switch (don't think so, though, cause it has to detect when the keyboard opens for landscape mode).
My guess is that this will not work on the MDA
Umfortunately I'm not a programmer, but I was thinking that the easiest way to get somethig like this to work would be to link the sound to play with the screen rotation instead of trying to get it to work when the keyboard is slid out which obviously isn't working anyway. It would play the sound if you rotated your screen manually, but I can't see why that would be a big deal. Maybe someone with a little programming knowledge could get this to work though.
I wanna keep this thread alive. SlidingSounds is something i wanna see work for wizards. It'll be cool if someone could craft a workaround or a new prog altogether.
Opening the keyboard is an event, shouldn't be hard to craft something to have it make a sound.
Any updates on this? I downloaded the app and it hasn't done anything, especially when messing with the registry. Thanks.
I've been working on tis as well but it seems that there is no way to adjust the registry to get it to work. I believe a app is gonna have to get the wizard to have this feature.
This would be so cool.. Alot of people have 'flip' style phones, and when they open them, they have some funny sounds. Would be great to have on the Wizard!
Anybody figured this out yet? I'm really sure it can be done.
im all about hacks for the wizard, but...
im assuming that you saw a wing and are trying to duplicate it...
WHY would you want it to do this?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!
same question for the menu pop sound?
those are the most annoying things i've seen on phone... well except for the default startup and shutdown sounds on all retail phones... when you turn off your phone, isnt because you're somewhere that you should be sure it wont be ringing/vibrating?
but on the other hand i still can't understand why people like to have the keys beep on their regular cell phones when they are txting...
sorry for the rant... i just don't get it

Maybe because we love the bells and whistles a gadget can make, it's all about your custom love that you want to have, not just everyone's universal preference. Some of us love to customize our phones to suit our personality, not just YOURS. Maybe these sounds grab attention of chicks, maybe this wallpaper makes us look cool in the sight of geeks. It's all personal prereference.
That's why I want keyboard Sliding Sounds to work. It's just one more thing that will grab the attention of people to see that, yes, I don't need a new phone every six months or so. I can make a new one using an old one by utilizing hacks.

Swype erratic and unpredictable?

Hey guys/gals,
I've been using swype for going on three weeks now but it's being a right pain more and more often now.
It just seems to pick words that have nothing like the letters being selected -due to the swype the trail jumping in different directions sometimes I suspect-
I also can't select the second function (punctuation, brackets etc) without a right fuss. when I hold a letter to get the number sitting above it I'll get something like "bbb b" or "xxx" even though my finger's perfectly still. and when I try and hold delete to delete whole words I might get something like "mmm l m lmm"
It just goes mental some times.
Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix the nutty behaviour before Swype and I have a showdown at dawn?
Sounds like your phone and not swype.
I had huge problems with the light grey colored swype (don't know what versions there are, the one extracted from the tmo rom I think) just wouldn't let me get 2nd function, and really jittery.
I went back to the original one I found weeks ago (again, sorry no idea if version, kinda dark grey and grey/blue, ) and that one, along with the screen sensitivity tweak in bsb tweaks makes it a joy to use (admittedly after a few weeks practice/annoyances)
I'll attach the cab of the one I user to this thread when I get home in an hour or so.
Not the phone it seems as I've tried the same one on two different HD2s.
Screen sensitivity might play a part in this but it's definitely an issue with swype. If I use swype, it's very troublesome and very erratic but if I use the standard keyboard, doing something like second function is spot-on 100% of the time.
Also, in notes and drawing apps, although lines that I draw aren't perfectly to my traced line, they aren't anything like swype's crazy lightning like bolts, however, I understand this might be like comparing apples to oranges
Samsamuel, that would be perfect mate, hopefully it can get myself and anyone with similar issues back on track with swype. It is a blue version I use too, but could hopefully be a different release you have.

i have the same issue. i'm not able to type in a number by second function and holding down the button. that's why i guess it's a touchscreen fault.
like you, swype draws more bolds than straight lines. but i have the same problem when playing games like flight commander, where the drawn lines are shown all time. this "zick-zack" lines happen only every few seconds. most time i can draw lines perfectly. this is the part which i cannot understand...
if the screen is faulty, why does it work most time correct?

It's interesting that it happens in games too but I still believe it's Swype at fault in this case and not the touchscreen.
Open up notes and start a drawing, draw really slowly or really quickly, press light and press heavy and the outcome is a far straighter trail (nearly perfect). This could be down to programming but I don't think Swype is programmed to be over sensitive or everyone would have the same problem, there must be another reason.
I have been having the same problem, wasn't all the time but it was like it was spiking a lot when swyping across the keyboard. Installed Keyboard tweak 3.3 with reduced sensitivity and working better than it ever did before but have only been testing for a couple of hours.

Ok, heres the swype i've used successfully on a few different roms. I don't remember where i got it(i got it from xda dev), and i cant find how to see a version number. The lighter coloured, slightly chunkier version is the one i had trouble with.
Version is important because if you read about, it seems there's a bug in one of the swype versions where it can affect passwords if you have a lock on your phone, and i think you have to hard reset to get back in, so i'd hate for that to happen! (I dont use a lock, so i wouldn't know if this is the affected version or not) so please back up your stuff.

That one you're using (and posted) is version 2 (from Omnia), the nasty one is Swype 3.9. I also had nightmares with 3.9, don't recommend installing if you find it. Or you could just register for Beta release on the Swype website.

[Q] Missing fifth row with numbers on keyboard

Hi,
I am a user of DesireZ for three months, after 2 years with G1, and so far I found it...even depressing (sic!), that the keyboard has no numbers row but only the combination of Fn + key.
How do you find it ? Any extra method of typing IP numbers for example ? or numbers with spaces e.g. +48 123 456 789 ? Please tell I me I get used to use it
Solution for me would be, and this is a question, there is a way to map two programmable keys to "space" and "comma". Possible ?
Cheers,
Whatlogin
I was a migrant from the g1 as well and found it hard to get used to at first. It isn't all that bad though considering you can press the fn key twice in succession and then the top row will work as a numbers row rather than letters. Apart from that, I don't have a solution sorry
I think I remember someone posting an apk in here that would show numbers row at the bottom of a screen as soon as you'd pulled out the keyboard in 'txt writing mode'. Mind you, it was way back in dec or jan... Try search?
I used to have it but it didn't work for me as I seem to remember it required root (I don't have that yet)
See if you find it, good luck
edit: I did find the file in my fone (!)
I take no credit for it nor responsibility whatsoever!!!
Sadly, I do not know who made that either (to credit them) but here it is...
good luck
Wow! TA for replies.
@HAK Devil: I know, but permanent Fn switch the "space" to XT9 and "." to ":"
@wolek76: this is exactly something that could sort out my needs. I should have been looking for G2 rather than DesireZ
Anyway - here is the thread regarding to whole idea and developer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813742
I haven't have a chance to have it working yet - but good to know I am not alone
Regards,
Whatlogin
You should keep your G1 as a backup phone incase the DZ goes wrong and you end up having to send it back for repairs. After 7 months the touchscreen on my old DZ kept sticking in one particular place and HTCs idea of "fixing it" was to kill 1/3 o fthe touchscreen, which was really annoying so after a month of heavy duty legal pressure (thanks to my partner), they coughed up a replacement.
Short version: I wouldn't ditch the rock solid G1 if I were you, it'll one day come in handy.
Hey I tried installing this and it wouldn't show up at all. Enabled it in keyboard settings, fixed permissions; nothing worked.
Has anybody gotten this to work? And have there been any updates on it?
One of the biggest probs I've had with this phone was the 5th number row. You do eventually get used to it, for the most part lol.
What keys did you have in mind for the swap?
Also, I think you may need root for this method to work. Are you rooted?

Even my old Nokia E70 had better keyboard than Vision/Desire Z has. That is so sad :-(

It did not work with me as well, thought when it got updated to 2.3.3 it actually started working no problem. Still there is a problem with Fn and 'shift' keys. I have no root and I haven't change anything to my phone apart from allowing installations from other sources.

Hi,
I am not rooted and as I mentioned - this does not work yet well. Check out also the thread I listed above. It is still being under development.
The two keys I was thinking about was the programmable keys that can be used for apps and so on.
I know I will get used to it. The easiest is type everything and come back to paste special symbols I guess like "ftp19216811://..." ha ha Maybe HTC want to make people stop writing like U2, sk8 is gr8, 4me and use proper language
Cheers!

[Q] USB mouse right click

Sorry if this has been posted or answered somewhere else already. I wanted to know how to change the right click function of the mouse. Currently it operates the same as left click ( enter/long press). I would like it to work as a back button. I'm running CM9 ROM. When I run any Flexreaper ROM it works the way I want it to. If someone can point me a direction it would be great. I have tried several different things with unpacking and repacking different files from both ROM's to see if I could get something to change but no luck. Thanks for reading my concern and hope to hear some good feedback.
