I heard on SprintUsers that there is going to be a change in upgrade eligibility effective April. How 100% certain it is I don't know, but Duffman an Advanced Sprint Tech posted about it yesterday. Another user inquired on it and received an emailed response. So it's looking kinda legit. Linkage: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216413
It appears you have to meet a certain plan price point to qualify for "Gold" status to be eligible to a 12 month upgrade. Silver and everyone else is only eligible to the full upgrade every 22 months. These price points are before the cost of Add a lines, Insurance, taxes, Premium Data etc. So the Base plan price is what counts, from what I understand.
The question at hand is if it will reset your upgrade date come 04/01/11. So if you were due a 12mo upgrade on 04/01/11 has it now been pushed out to 04/01/2012? Or will they be like Verizon and make it effective upon your next upgrade?
Anyone else heard anything or have any "insider" information. I can see this being true with the pending Feb 7 announcement they have planned. Verizon changed their policy and then announced the iphone almost immediately after that. Sprint might be following suit.
From the email that dbldwn02 received:
Dear John,
Thank you for contacting Sprint. I understand your concern regarding the Sprint Premier Program policy change.
Effective April 01, 2011, Sprint Premier Program is being updated to offer two levels of benefits, Sprint Premier Gold and Sprint Premier Silver, based on customer's MRC and tenure.
Sprint Premier Gold :
Sprint Premier Gold customers receive all the current benefits of Premier, including annual upgrades on 1 line per qualifying plan (or 10+ years service). All other lines on a Premier account currently are upgrade eligible every 22 months under Sprint's New for You Program.
To be Sprint Premier Gold, customers must have at least 6 months tenure and meet the following qualifications:
• Individual plans with a 3 month average MRC of at least $89.99 or
• Shared plans with a 3 month average MRC of at least $169.99 or
• Tenure of 10+ years with Sprint Wireless
• Good standing.
Sprint Premier Silver :
Sprint Premier Silver customers receive all the current benefits of Premier, except the annual upgrade. These customers will qualify for a
$75 upgrade every 12 months or $150 upgrade at 22 months under the standard New for You upgrade program.
To be Sprint Premier Silver, customers must have at least 6 months tenure and meet the following qualifications:
• Individual plans with a 3 month average MRC $69.99-$89.98 or
• Shared plans with a 3 month average MRC $99.99 -$169.98
• Good standing.
After April 01, 2011, your account will become the Sprint Premier Silver account and the handset upgrade eligibilty of your account will be reset as per the new Sprint Premier Program policy. I apologize for the inconvenience you have faced due to this.
Thank you again for contacting Sprint.
Sincerely,
Sprint

i hope this is not true wont hurt me to much i have all that for the gold upgrade package but for others this will suck
Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it looks like they're about to screw over just about every person who picked up an Evo last year. Many of us picked up the phone as a premier member knowing that we'd be eligible for Sprint's next June release (this year). Most people aren't going to have an individual recurring charge of 89.99 because the 79.99 pretty much gives you unlimited everything. Looks like you have to be on a family plan to be a gold member.

Word is they are going to roll out a new unlimited plan for $89.99 too. Unlimited minutes/data etc and I *think* 4G is included in there, if not it too is a $10 charge. Lot's of changes seem to be coming this year.
Wow. That sucks, it was a major competitive advantage. It sounds from the thread on SU that it will reset your eligibility date...meaning everyone who has bought the Evo expecting to do a premier upgrade in a year is probably stuck with no discount until 2012. What really sucks is that I don't think there's jack you can do about it. It was a perk program, and not part of your contract at all. I doubt this will give anyone an ETF free termination option.
I wasn't premier eligible myself anyway, because I'm on SERO premium (which more than compensates for it). But for anyone not on SERO or thinking about coming over to Sprint, the annual upgrade was a major reason to consider staying with/switching to Sprint. They still are ahead of the other carriers in value, but they appear to be steadily chipping away at that. I'm not so sure I'd stay with Sprint if VZW was the same price.
Here's the thread on SU:
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=216413
i still don't get the 10 year thing
Sprint used to be unstoppable back in my SERO days. Now it's a good value but not so far ahead with the addition of premium data, etc. This change pretty much kills my next upgrade and might just push me and a lot of the other more techy heads out to other carriers.
Living the cheap off contract HSPA+ life with T-Mo is looking more and more attractive.

You either need to have a plan with the above listed price point or be a Sprint customer for 10 years. So if you have an individual plan with a $59 base price and have been a customer since 2000, you still qualify as Premier Gold. You don't meet the price guidelines, but being a 10 year customer automatically entitles you to the Gold benefits.
This is how it has always been. Either a 10 year customer, on a $69.99 plan or higher for individual lines or $99.99 plan for family plans. Must be on the plans for at least three months an additional lines qualify every 22 months. Has never been different. I haven't heard anything about it changing anytime soon. This is a bad rumor to make Verizon look good.

This is a bad rumor. $169.99 is the highest family plan available and $89.99 is $10 less than their unlimited plan. Would be stupid for Sprint to charge it's customers it's highest prices available. Again, nothing has been said about this at Sprint, not even a leak. Someone is posting this to not make Vzw look horrible.

I'm with you. Sprint's "Just Because" fee for fake 4G is crazy already but now for 3G?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
the thing that upsets me is they aren't changing the prices of plans, so they can still advertise the 69.99 rate for "unlimited" data. they need to just call it a 4g fee or raise the overall price of plans. I don't like the idea of charging an additional fee for a feature that's supposed to be "unlimited" in their plan rate.
That's so messed up that's what turned me away from the evo and epic was the extra fee when I wouldn't have 4g in my area anyway thank God I'm locked in for two years now I'm really going to tether as much as possible just to piss them off lmao
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Sprint actually improved their company image over the past year thanks to Android, but I think this will destroy most of, if not everything, they worked for. What a shame. In the future I will definitely consider T-Mobile as they are almost the same price and I think their HSPA+ is a much better concept than 4G.
I look at this as another excuse to get that HTC Evo upgrade
glad i went to virgin mobile. lol JK.. even with the new fee its still cheaper.. I just wish sprint would have just came out and said.. hey listen we gotta raise X fee to help improve our network or this or that. etc.. with that said I would be mad if I was still on sprint.lol
but 25 bucks a month is too hard to pass up. sure i have a crappy phone ( intercept ) but im sure virgin will get something better down the road.. etc..
But this will impact sprint in a negative light again. unless they do something. lol oh well enjoy your 80 dollar plan without 4g. lol ( for those who dont get it that is )

All of y'all stop acting like cheap bastards.. Even with the extra $10 were still paying WAY less then Verizon.. For 2 lines I'm paying $132 unlimited everything... The homie who has a blackberry on Verizon is paying that exact same thing... by itself lol...

Your not seeing the bigger picture those who have family plans will have to pay for each line so if u have 5ppl that's an extra 50$ a month for something u already had for free witch is pretty rediculous

Extra $240, since it's a monthly fee over a 2 year contract. People never think of total cost of ownership when it comes to cell phones.
Yes, still cheaper than Verizon and AT&T.
This is the aftermath from the lawsuit in which the people filed against the fake 4g charge. Sprint said the $10 wasn't for the 4g, but for the more capable phones. Now to retaliate they are charging the fee across the board...

This.
Basically, the way I look at it, their requiring an "Everything data" plan for a smartphone should have covered this, and they should have increased the base price of the plan (for new customers only) instead of instituting this bull**** addon fee.
Second, I have no desire to move to a 4G phone - my Hero does everything I need it to. If I lose or otherwise need to replace my phone, now my bill goes up $10, even though I will be using the EXACT same phone in the EXACT same config? Since I have a family plan with 5 lines, that's a potential for $50/month.
Lastly, doing away with the 1 year upgrades for Premium members is the final straw. In the last two days, without me gaining a single iota of value, I am looking at an additional $50/month for the next 17 months (contract is up in May 2012) in addition to missing out on the $150 upgrade credit for 5 phones. This is on top of the changes they made for corporate discounts in August (which is costing me $15 more a month).
I'll be shopping for a new carrier in short order, even if it does cost me more. I'm tired of Sprint changing the rules and making up bull**** explanations, just so Hesse can have a bigger yacht.
Man sprint is on a roll this week..lol
oh well come 2012 its not gonna matter, lol
is it just me or are people missing the point?
"Sprint will increase its postpaid rates by applying a $10 per month Premium Data add-on charge to activations of smartphones beginning Jan. 30....."
For example my Hero is already activated
Ok.. So it looks like on 4/1 Sprint is changing the Premier upgrade program so that most will only qualify for a $75.00 discount after 12 months and $150.00 discount after 22 months (same as before Premier existed).
To keep the current yearly $150.00 discounts on handsets you are required to have a plan with a monthly rate of at least $89.99.
It doesn't look like they are gonna let people keep the 1 yr $150.00 upgrades due to happen after 4/1 if your plan is not at least $89.99.
Here is the rundown:
Silver - $75 upgrade per year or $150 at 22 months.
Requirement:
$69.99 individual plan, or
$99.99 shared plan
Gold - $150 upgrade every year
$89.99 individual plan, or
169.99 shared plan, or
10 years with Sprint.
Credit for this info goes to Duffman at Sprintusers.
I guess the April Fool's joke is on us!
Messed up huh?
Sprint is starting to get ridiculous. $10/month data charge starting this month, and then this crap??
UGH!
Yep...
They are making the price difference between them and Verizon not much more. The only real big difference to me right now is that with Sprint you can tether to death and they won't care.
Verizon is much more tight about data.
Well, now that Sprint is turning into bull**** and the price is starting to even out with T-Mo, I might as well just switch to T-Mo.
To each his own. I hated T-Mobile, had pitiful service. I live about 30 mins north of Pittsburgh.

I have been seriously thinking about doing just that.
Also, Verizon is implementing the Any Mobile Any Time in certain markets as a trial...
You never know, they might implement that nationally too...
If they do, well, it would make it REALLY tough on Sprint.
April 1 huh? Well, not sure how to take this information because of the reference to that date.
But, the difference between $69.99 and $89.99 per month over 12 months would be an increase of $240 compared to just paying an extra $75 to upgrade after 12 months. That's easy, I'll chose the $75. My last premier upgrade was from Instinct June 08 to Hero Oct 09 (16 months) and been on Hero now for 15 months.
Anyway, if this is true, then I have one last 'premier' upgrade to perform before it kicks in. Since Sprint already revealed they are changing the $10 premium data fee on all smartphones effective February 1st, I guess I'll wait until after their February 7th press announcement to make my decision.

Prepaid customers get treated like second class citizens because prepaid plans aren't where the revenue is generated. If prepaid guys aren't ready to commit to the company, the company can't be committed to them. You know they have new plan that just came out. 2 linen completely unlimited for $100. I use to be on the old grandfathered in plan but now I'm saving 20 bucks.

Be wary of any new plans that come out, on any carrier. Newer doesn't always mean better. In fact, most of the time, it means quiet the opposite.

700 mhz wideband has kicked in all over. Here in Fort Lauderdale too.
I'm assuming tether data doesn't "stash" ... That sucks for unlimited users.

you know what, send a tweet to john legere, and let him know how you feel about that...these guys are changing so many of the BS things in the wireless industry, that they might consider that too..
and, BTW, I just confirmed that most post paid plans, including the 4 lines for 100 bucks DO qualify for the "data stash"/10 gigs per line, per month plan!

This is great to hear. Your saying even though I've never bought extra data like the fine print says, I'm still going to get the stash and 10gb of data?
And how exactly did you confirm this?

I called them 2 different times and both reps said the same thing..
Color me skeptical. The TMO website clearly states that you must have postpaid for at least 3 Gb of data to be eligible.
Here's how I upgraded over 3 months early...
I went on AT&T's website and opened a chat window and said, "I'd like to upgrade to the Nexus 6 today and pay the 2-year contract price ($250). If you can't do this for me then I will be cancelling my contract today." I was told that I could not upgrade early and that I'd have to call 800-331-0500 (or 611 from my phone) and select the options for contract cancellation.
I called and told the woman "I'd like to cancel my contract so that I can switch to T-Mobile." And of course she replied, "I'm sorry to hear that. May I ask why you're switching?" I said, "...because AT&T is too expensive and I want to upgrade to the Nexus 6 and don't want to use AT&T Next." Then without any hassle, she offered to let me upgrade for the 2-year contract price. I went in fully prepared to pay the ETF since I thought for sure they would deny my request so they could stop my grandfathered unlimited data plan. She waived the upgrade fee, applied a $10 discount that I didn't know about, and even sent it overnight FedEx.
I'm sure you XDA experts have had better upgrade experiences, or maybe thought I got a bad deal, but I'm happy, and now hopefully now more people out there can upgrade early, too.
You got a 32gb N6 or a 64gb?

Well, you didn't really trick AT&T, they tricked you... After your 2 year agreement with them is over, they will make over $1000 from you, that's what you will end up paying for the $650 32 GB Nexus 6....

I would've had to pay for monthly service regardless what company I went with. Anyway I'm OK with sticking with AT&T since their service is pretty good where I live and I keep my unlimited data.

If he has an grandfathered unlimited plan, that's pretty irrelevant

Tell me where else I can get an unlimited text/data phone plan from one of the big three (ATT Tmobile Verizon) for ~$70.

You pay the same every month regardless if you buy a phone or not if you plan on staying with your carrier for the two years of the contract.

So you are paying full price $70 x 24 months + the full price for the phone $650 = $2330.
While I pay $71 (after tax) x 24 months + discounted price for the phone $300 = $2004.
Looks like signing a 2 year contract with ATT looks better.

I routinely use 10+ GB of LTE/HSPA+ data monthly (Sometimes over 15. One month I used nearly 35GB.) and I've never been throttled.

I got the 32 GB from AT&T, as well. I don't think AT&T are offering the 64 GB.

tmobile throttles the limited data plasns, but it doesnt cut them out or charge you more. but their unlimited plans are actually unlimited, unlike other carriers. last month i used 39gb of data.

Thanks for letting me know guys
Meh never mind.
I'm happy that you got what you wanted, but with such a steep subsidize price I oppted for the 24 month financing and paid 0 down and only raise my bill by $22 per month. I think it's a win win either way, but my rule of thumb is if you've got to pay more than $150-200 then you're better off going the payment route if you have the 10 GB data plan or higher which I do.
