[Q] No service problem - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

UPDATE: I have noticed that I have only no 2G service. What am I doing wrong? From *#*#*4696#*#* under phone info I have enabled "WCDMA preferred". Can this be a hardware thing if I have 3G connectivity but cant connect to 2G network??
Hi everyone!
I've been having a strange problem lately - at random times and random places I suddenly have no service so i can make no calls. Then after about 10 minutes I have service again and everything seems to be just fine until the next time that happens.
This can happen at random places but also after I return from somewhere where there's not supposed to be any service (from the basement for example) it also takes very long (10-20 min) until I have service again. Also i have noticed that sometimes when I have no bars and can make no calls, I can still go online on mobile internet (not wifi).
It started after I updated Hyperdroid 2.01 to Hyperdroid 3.0. I have since then tried several times to completely wipe everything (have reinstalled WM6.5 (the problem persisted in WM6.5 also) and have wiped everything with task29.
After wiping I have reinstalled radio v 2.15.xx, MAGLDR 1.13, CWR 150MB partition and then reinstalled Hyperdroid 2.01 but i still keep getting the random service drops.
Can this be hardware-related? What else can I try?

"What else can I try?"
Your sim in another phone. Not just for 5 minutes, for a few hours.
Have you looked into your providers network status? Could be doing system upgrades.
Have you inadvertently set to use 3g only?

I didn't know that there was an option to only use 3G. But as soon as I switched to "only 2G" I lost the connection again so it might have something to do with that. How could I disable this "only 3G" (I can't find it near the "only 2G" option).
Also will try a different sim.
Thanks

sorry, not sure offhand, i used to know how to do it in winmo.

So now I have tried dialing *#*#*4696#*#* to enter "phone information" and there ir reads "WCDMA preferred" so that means 2G should be enabled as well. But when I select GSM only i dont have any service and under DATA it reads "fail because Radio Not Available". I have 2.15.xx radio rom installed, also tried 2.12.

Did your tryed to flash a other kernel?

I did. But the same kernel worked for me about a week before so this cant be it right?

Can this be a hardware thing if I have 3G connectivity but cant connect to 2G network??

thats not a hardware issue, sounds like a Rom problem. Test out the radios, and see which one gives you the best signal

I have tried different radios (2.08, 2.10, 2.15) different android roms (Hyperdroid 1.04, 2.01, 3.0, 5.30, MIUI gingerbread) and different WM6,5 roms. I have tried switching SIM cards. I have tried switching off ond on data connection. Have tried switching 2G/3G to 3G only and to 2G only. Nothing helps. I still get no service when I am in a 2G only service area.
Please help. Anybody?

finally, somebody with a same problem as me... i have tried to fix it for 6 month, and still can't get any 3g signal, i have tried task 29, wm 6.5, different android nand and sd rom.
but the 3g signal showed in wp7 rom, have you tried wp7?

I have not. Maybe I will. But my problem is that I don't have 2G signal - I do have good 3G signal though.

Tried to install Windows phone 7. No luck. Still no 2G signal. What does anybody think of this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1190180?

I'm the opposite, but did you able to browse mobile internet with the no signal?? If you can, and get 2g speed then it's not the hardware, as your phone still able to get 2g signal
Sometimes my phone can browse the net in 3g speed even with no signal, so i guess its a software problem??

Two or three times I have had G or E instead of H or 3G in the notification bar but although it shows me that it has service it wont connect to the internet neither can i take calls during that time. All the time that I have 3G or H connection i can take calls and I havent noticed that internet would be slow.
So I have almost given up hope. I have quite good 3G service where I live but still 3G is not that strong indoors and I have too much downtime so my next desperate step would be to open up my phone and see if I can find something wrong with the connectors.. I really dont want to do that..

[FIX]Signal Drops / Bad Reception / Battery Drain Issues with Nand Android

Well after many searches and a lot of trial and error, I think ive finally solved my problem of dropped/no phone signal for NAND builds, which in turn has also made my battery life way better since the phone is no longer constantly searching for signal Basically its 4 steps, ive tried each individually with no changes but for some reason when applied all together it works wonders. They are as follows:
1: dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information and choose 'gsm auto PRL'
2: go to settings>mobile networks and check 'use only 2g networks'
3: go to settings>wireless networks>wifi>advanced and change wifi sleep policy to 'never'
4: go to app store and download "wifi keep alive" (free). choose wifi behavior 'always on' and advanced options 'enable workaround 2'
using these 4 steps i reduced my time without signal from 74% to 12% in 16 hours, and im getting 4-5 green bars all the time, at home and work hope this helps
I'm not an expert, but doesn't that mean you are stuck in 2G-Mode for Data Transfer? I believe 3G if available would be faster..... or am i wrong?

yeah, it stays in 2g for data but for me its an acceptable trade off to actually be able to recieve calls. plus you can always switch 3g back on if you plan on doing something that uses a lot of data and switch it back off when youre done
damm i was excited until i saw that you have to disable 3G
Is this a common problem?
or... you could just go to settings/wireless&networks/mobile networks and change the network mode to gsm only (which is 2g) so, same thing.. and you know what? i still have signal issues, just not as bad..

yea i think that option is only on Desire or froyo builds, on all of the GB's ive used it says 2G. i suppose its not gonna work for everyone, it probably still depends on your coverage area, but it definately helped me A LOT. ive been using these settings for the past 3 days and my time without signal has dropped down to 0-5% from the 55-75% it was before, and im no longer missing calls
very useful tips
I ticked the "Use 2G only" checkbox in my wireless settings and all connection problems seem to be gone! (for now)... My data connection used to be terrible... voice connection shaky.
Thanks a lot!

[q] htc hd2 signal problems

I have the following problem, when I power on my HTC HD2 sometimes does not detect a signal with two different SIM with two different providers. At other times it detect the signals with both SIM. If signal is detected after a time it loses signal (voice and data) and sometimes the signal return after a few minutes, in other cases it is necessary to reset the device. When I reset the device is no guarantee it will function, is a very random problem, both SIM work on another old device (no hd2) without problems. Normally, when it detect signal I can make calls, and after a few minutes the device can not make calls, falls silent and after a while you hear a busy tone, nor are incoming calls.
What could be damaged?
Hello,
Does this happen anywhere or always in teh same area?
From my side, I have a lot of problem to have some signal but I realized it was because my area was far from an antenna (even if being in a big town).
If you problem happens anywhere then, I would recommend to flash your radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
Hello.
I have a similar problem - sometimes i also lose my signal. At first i thought that it was random but then i discovered that i have good 3G signal but when i go somewhere where there is only 2G i have no service. this also happens every time it try to switch to "2G only".
I started noticing it after flashing Hyperdroid 3.0 NAND android on my phone in the place of Hyperdroid 1.04 (although i'm not sure it has anything to do with the NAND rom). I have tried flashing many different radios (2.08, 2.12, 2.15) and also different roms - both android and also the original WM6,5 rom.
If anybody could suggest something i would be very grateful.
task29, wipe all cashes & use more stable ROM
Dial *#*#4636#*#* phone information Set prefered network to GSM only, (or CDMA only)
Also press menu and select your band, rather than using automatic

Wow, this is ridiculous and why is this happening?

Please help:
I'm on CM9 19 6 nightly. Using Semaphore kernel without any modifications to the scripts.
The problem: My signal keeps on going out at regular intervals.
I've used XXJVU, DDJV5, XXJVT, KF1(Nexus modem for ICS) and various more. I stay on the modems for a week and then change to another one. The latest one is DDJV5 which I have been using since the past 2 weeks.
Tried all of the modems I could lay my hands on. Nothing works.
But the moment I come to work, the signal keeps fluctuating over the day. Sometimes it would be out for 10-15 minutes. When it's back, it would get back to giving -65 .. -71 dBm. It would stay like that for a few minutes and then it would be gone again for another 10-15 minutes or so.
It has turned into an OCD where I keep checking my signal.
This does not happen when I'm back home and then I'm back to getting good signal.
Yes, this looks to you like a locational issue. I thought so too. BUT, how did I get so good signal till a week back at work?
Question: What could have made this mess to my signal reception? How can I solve this?
No, all my syncs are OFF. I keep my 3G turned off and only use it once an hour or so for a few minutes. I don't use any signal consuming apps.
Also, sometimes the 3G would work even without the signal.
Another thing, sometimes there's a (x) sign at the signal bar thing and sometimes there is no (x) without bars.
As a cure for the OCD, I've taken an off from work today just to get some rest from checking my signal every now and then. And maybe find a solution.
I'm on Vodafone India.
Indians, I am on Vodafone India in Pune, Hinjewadi Information Technology park. Maybe Pune guys can help me out too?
maybe the phone changes the network mode.. 2g 3g or i dont know , try to put in in 2g only mode , or gsm only mode.
When the signal bar shows with a "x" it means the network is not available...go to settings and change the Network mode to "GSM Only". It will solve the fluctuating issue but network speed will be limited to 2G only.

Thanks, let me try it out.
Where is the network changing option to GSM only in ICS?
Okay, I guess it's the 2G mode.

Is going to 2G mode my ONLY option?
How can I fix this and get back to using 3G?
Update:
Changing to 2G mode fixed the problem. BUT...
I have a few questions now:
I want to use 3G but at the same time I don't want the signal to fluctuate between 2G and 3G—want to get constant 3G connectivity without signal fluctuations. Is there any way I can fix that?
I remember reading somewhere that going to recovery and changing permission helps this.
Anyone knows how to change the permissions so the signal fluctuations stop?
I have done a lot of reading on XDA but I haven't noticed an issue like this.
CM9 guys, anything please...

I have the same issue mate...using 2G is the only option to get signal without any problem.
The problem doesnot lies on your phone but the problem is with the operator. The area where you live hardly 3G signal reaches there (same problem with me).
You got two options to fix this issue:
1. Change your Network Operator
Or
2. Settle to another location where 3G signal is fully available
Sent from my GT-i9100 equipped with Grenade Launcher and Remote Explosives
Both the options look impossible for me at the moment.
I will start living with the hope that the operator brings us some decent 3G signal here.
Thanks a lot anyways. It was helpful. Hope others facing the issue can learn from this thread. :good:

Complain to your provider, very loud!
:gooditto the same problem occured to me on Vodafone (Chennai) tried all modems listed above nothing worked ...Used to lose signals all the time with 2g data on especially at my workplace intermittently for 3-4 months ever since I upgraded to ICS..Sometimes used to lose signal even if data was off..multiple reboots/restarts gave no solution ..issue persisted across all the 15+ roms i might have flashed over the past 6 months..
Finally fed up I ported the number to AIrtel..everything works like a charm on JV9 I must say now..can vouch it's a network issue at the location
I am getting constant 5 bars on the 2G network. 3G gives me 2 bars at max.
Asked Vodafone about the future of 3G in my location and they said "We are spreading, sir. We will keep you informed".
I've had this problem too when the phone was constantly switching between 2G and 3G/3.5G. Try adding "Toggle 2G/3G" to notification drawer, set the "Network modes" for it to 2G/3G Only or 2G/3G Only/3G+2G. Switching between modes can take 10-20 seconds, but you should be able to test if you can get good enough 3G only connectivity (in case it is just a network switching problem like for me).
If you want 3G only, Dial *#*#4636#*#* - Phone information - WCDMA only.

Bad Reception with this phone?

Hi,
Was wondering if anyone got bad reception with their phone. I tried 3 different carriers since I had my ideos, in neither of them I ever had very reliable reception and lately the problem is getting worse. I'm running aurora 4.1a and I loose reception all the time, and the battery drains so quick because it's always looking and looking. My sister, my mum and my dad all have good reception (2 of them with my old carrier and 1 with my current carrier).. I can put my dad's phone (same carrier) next to mine.. he will have full bars with 3g and I'll have no reception at all!!!!!! Then it connects and disconnects again, and so it goes... Anyone having such issues?
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem, I'm running Aurora ICS. I use to always have good reception everywhere, Then suddenly I've just been unable to. Any help would be great! If I do find out any fixes to the issue myself I will sure let you know.
Good to know that I'm not the only one! Thanks. Hope we find a fix soon.
I've fixed mine now, What I've done is I've gone into Settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Networks, and scrolled all the way to the bottom, and simply re-registered on the network and selected Use only 2G Data. Mines now working fine with full connection everywhere. However I don't know if our problems are exactly the same, however this is what fixed mine. Sorry if this doesn't help.
I have the same issue. Mine connects to 3G and has good connection, but then it simply disconnects and moves to 2G or reconnects to 3G some time later. That happens pretty frequently and I thought it was an issue with the carrier, but now I am not sure anymore.
Blefish, that is EXACTLY what happens to me, and I tried 3 major carriers in Australia (the only 3 that have their own actual towers). Just after I posted this thread, I happened to do the same thing as IwAsBlack recommended and... so far it seems to work. I have generally better connection and I haven't seen that ugly no reception icon since! Of course, internet browsing will be generally a bit slower but then again, it's better than staring at the phone for 3 minutes until it reconnects just to open Google.
You haven't stated which model you have. I got rid of a Motorola Bravo for at U8800-51 and I have excellent performance over AT&T (US). Crystal clear even with only one bar and I have never had a dropped call.
Have the same issue on any ROM with any mobile network in Belarus. Can't use 2G as recommended above 'cos of a huge use of mobile internet for some net-radio.
Sorry for bad Eng.
Its a U8800 Q&A forum, I didn't think that I had to state the version since I have a U8800.
Yesterday I tested and kept an eye on for the whole day! The reception since changing to 2G only has been AWESOME! Only had a drop out when I was in the subway (of course!) but aisde from that, I had amazing reception not to mention.. that my phone lasted the whole day with still 15% left!! (3G on, it would have to charge it twice while I'm at work) So, it fixed my reception AND my battery problems.

FYI, Ideos X5 U8800 describes four different models.
I know it does. What I meant is that I have the Normal U8800 model, so I didn't feel like it was necessary for me to point any variant model number like PRO or 51 or H, because it's STANDARD U8800
So we can make a conclusion that U8800 does not operate well on 3G. I can't switch it myself because I want to use internet too. And I am pretty sure we can't do anything about it, no matter if the problem is in hardware or software.

Mate, if you switch to 2G you will still be able to browse the internet! It will only be a LITTLE bit slower, better than having constant disconnection!!! I constantly use the internet to sync my gmail, send free texts, browse the net and a bunch of other stuff.. works even better on 2G with constant reception, not to mention the benefit of the phone battery lasting a whole day (AND still have internet).. so switch to 2G and you will like it... still good internet only with better reception
Same issue
Having same issue when using GSM/WCDMA auto or preferred modes. works normal on GSM network only.
Even when I have no signal of 3g, gsm is working in the background.
problem arises when I have a call, 3g signal drops to minmimun, after the call phone tries to reconnect with the 3g signal but drops the GSM signal in the process.
Try this , as soon as you disconnect the call, try to call yourself from other at that instant only. Your phone will be shown unreachable because phone drops the GSM signals.

Big problem with 2G

Hi everyone !
Lately I went to a place were 3G/4G was not reachable and it is there that i noticed that my brand new Moto X play couldn't get any connection in 2G (GSM) mode even if the place was fully covered with 2G/EDGE (GSM)...
In 3G/4G there is no problem only on 2G (GSM).
I tried in the settings to put 2G (GSM) only and I can not get any signal even now that i'm back home ....
I tried a factory reset from the recovery it did not work :crying: Do you have an idea on how to solve that problem ?
I also tried to use the sim card with another phone in 2G (GSM) and there it works fine with maximal signal ....
Thanks !
Hallo,
I did a test and I got the same "problem".
Turned 4G into 3G...no problem.Still connected..
Turned 3G into 2G....no signal.
Turned 4G into 2G..no signal.
You can try to switch networktype in *#*#4636#*#*
No time for me now....I will try it later on the day.

I just tried it and turned the networktype to "GSM only" then i got no signal just like before. If i try to use another type like CDMA/GSM it connects to 3G and works but still the problem with the GSM/2G....
Hi guys. I'm not experiencing this problem on my XT1562. switching between bands is fine and working on my device. What kernels are you guys using?
I'm using the stock kernel, I just flashed the OTA (6.0.1) from the stock recovery
Same Problem, more information
For my Moto Play X I have a very similar problem:
4G works, but 3G and 2G do not. If I'm connected to a 4G network, I see that there is reception and can use all data transfer functions. But when I want to do a call, I get a timeout. When I'm in a place where there is no 4G network available, I see that I don't have signal - but the network is shown in the list of available networks for manual selection.
As I have a dual SIM variant (stock ROM, not a custom modification or "upgrade") my second SIM does work like a charm. I tried now and swapped the SIMs - and it seems that just the SIM1 slot is having those problems. The same SIM also works perfectly in the second SIM slot.
I also tries to reset just the network settings (an option provided by the stock ROM) but this didn't change anything.
Next step I'm currently working on is doing a factory reset - will take a while until backup and restore will enable me to see the real result. I'll keep you up to date....
UPDATE: factory reset didn't change anything - will send phone to repair now. :,-(
