As we explained yesterday, now that the Ice Cream Sandwich SDK has been released, we're about to see a deluge of SDK-based ROM ports. We're not going to cover them all here, but will will cover the first to come out of the Android Central Forums. Beezy's been hard at work, and you'll soon be able to enjoy the fruits of his SDK labor on the Nexus S 4G. Things are very much still a work in progress, but you'll soon be able to be the first on your block to say you have some form of ICS on your phone.

I'm so excited! This is why I sold my evo shift (which I'm typing on till I get my NS4G sat)

Nice. Can't wait for a legit port. Screw waiting for an OTA 2 months after the galaxy nexus launch.

are SDK ports 100% legit/functional tho?
or u have to wait for source for that
Can't wait for this, just ditch the 4G in Nexus S

They're no where near fully functional. Wait for source for that.

So glad I switched to the Nexus S 4g on launch day. We'll have ICS before years end and my old phone (Epic 4g) still sadly sits on Froyo officially. With endless hallow promises from Samsung about an official Gingerbread build. Never ever again will I buy a carrier/manufacture supported phone. The devs with this phone have been incredible and so has the phone. Same goes for the other Nexus S (non 4g) devs.

Why did that not have froyo on the phone when it was released? Froyo was out for a while before the phone was released, so does anybody have any idea why they didn't start out with froyo? Did they like ecairs better than ice cream? Who knows?

Because they didn't.

The development cycles on these phones is 6 or 7 months if not longer. When they started on the phone, FroYo probably wasn't to manufacturers yet. It is not easy at all to change course with software projects. And incredibly expensive to chunk everything that you have and start over. So they build it on eclair, and work on FroYo when its released, also you have all of the politics involved about which phones in your lineup gets updated, how many developers to put on each piece of hardware. I don't think most people realize the amount of planning that goes into any software written for profit. You'd probably **** your self if you saw some of my Gantt Charts, time lines, flow charts and other various wastes of paper that are done before a single line of code is typed (with the exception of prototyping) You can't just take a leap and start coding, switch gears 11 times, then hope to ever hit a deadline or budget. There isn't a lot of cost in the actual product of software, but the minds that power it are not cheap labor.

You have ruined my day posting Barry pic.
just saw this new on phonearena... two more months for a new version of android and we dont even have a beta ROM of gingerbread xD
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Honeycomb-now-due-for-February-launch-as-Android-2.4_id15400
Maybe Honeycomb was design specifically with tablets/higher res devices in mind?
I agree. Honeycomb was mentioned as being tablet centric. I don't think there will be much that will affect the phone side. I think that's the big reason they're making it a 2.4 release instead of 3.0. That and I think it is also to get more android tablets out before the iPad 2 is released. That's my theory.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I hope thats the reason... otherwise i will start hating my slide real bad xD
Well look at it this way. T-Mo/HTC can Skip over Gingerbread and go to Honeycomb since the time difference between 2.3 and 2.4 are so short.

If honeycomb is being designed with Tablets in mind, there'd be no reason to put it on a phone. Screen sizes won't match at all.

True but it all depends on what features Google adds in addition to tablet support.
I see Honeycomb as adding Major Support for Tablets. If it was just an update only for Tablets they probably wouldn't given it a codename. Just left it Gingerbread but 2.4. Again just my theory.
i hope 2.4 does end up tablet centric, otherwise it 2.3 would be a waste if time.
MMMM... Honeycomb !

Actually, this may very well be relevant. Perhaps it's a sign that they are readying the release. Who knows for sure.... It updates us on the status of the overall roll out. Whether or not it applies to Samsung as they seem to march to the beat of a different, unknown drummer is another story.
Thanks for the update.

LOL, yes just a generalized update concerning GB as an OTA from Sprint.
I am sure given my signature and number of posts; that you'd unserdtand I know where I am posting
Thank you for not disappointing me; I knew for sure I'd catch a flame or two... hehehe
Thank you Rob for coming to my defense
Maybe now that both of Sprint's favorite sons, the EVO brothers, got the GB update they can finally release it to the red headed stepchild.

Let's face it once google announced the ics as the next version of android why do some people still want gb when ics can be leaked and used on our phones. Google needs to be the one doing the updates not the carriers and phone makers. Google should open a beta and prebeta builds to all who want them.

this thread should be stickied as a perfect example of a douche.

could you people please stop answering him like anything he says is serious?
For someone who's been around since the 70's you seem to not understand the development life cycle of a product to be expecting such an asinine thing to happen.
Using win7 (retail) to win8 (alpha) argument proves your failure to grasp that.
BTW, i love how decad3nce pwned your last post. LOL

Because to us Gingerbread is the most important release ever! Gingerbread was made with Hummingbird in mind..ICS is a huge improvement for dual core phones..while we definitely get some new features, you would not notice such huge performance increases as you do with Gingerbread.
Locked. OP, check your pm's.
Samsung Galaxy S2 to get Official ICS in March – OTA Update
Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 operating system are the now more than 70 days old and still there is no major mobile phone out with Android 4.0 by default or there is no phone with Android 4.0 upgrade readily available. Yesterday, it was HTC who announced at their Facebook page that they will be updating HTC Sensation line of phone with Ice Cream Sandwich in March end. Today it turned out to be Samsung’s turn as they have announced that their best selling Galaxy S II will receive Ice Cream Sandwich update on March 1, 2012 which is the concluding day of Mobile World Congress. The Android 4.0 update of Galaxy S II has no connection with MWC either.
