Flash a custom kernel or use Juice defender for better battery life, I know someone is going to disagree, but for puree functionality MIUI is the best AOSP ROM, the only thing it is missing is 4g!

Try decks rom its really stable and everything works even 4g. Pair it with godmode kernel from kernel manager and your set.

CM7 is amazing. Hands down the best. For my EVO though, I run Decks. He basically takes CM7, and removed everything the EVO doesnt need. So therefore, you have a faster, slimmer version of CM7 thats specific for the EVO

Can someone send me the deck Rom I will try that one.

not to be the **** here, but it's aosp, just for future reference. android open source project. it's an acronym.

Asop wrote fables. AOSP is an open source rom
But, in all seriousness, every AOSP rom is going to give you GPS troubles until you fix it yourself. It's just a problem with the Evo, but a fixable one. Flash the drivers in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412
The first one should do you right, the Qualcomm vision 1.1 driver. If that doesn't work, do a search for "sense GPS fix" and try that as well. The sense fix would *sorta* work for me, but the qualcomm vision drivers worked like gangbusters.
For the record, I run Salvage Mod, as it's one of the lightest and most stable roms out there. CM7, however, is also wonderful. As is MIUI. Try all three of those, see which you like, don't commit to one until you love it.

I went back to a stock ROM but when I was running AOSP CM7 was the only choice for me. Yes, you need to flash GPS drivers and I chose a custom kernel (SavagedZen-2.2.1-BFS-HAVS) to extend battery life.

I've been running Decks 1.3d (Shootme doesn't work with the Stable release), Tiamat 3.3.7 (Bruce Lee), Vipermod -100, 128/499 Smartass. GPS driver fixes as noted above. I'm getting 18hrs out of normal use. Everything works.

this question is purely subjective, as to which is the best. Every ROM has its pros and cons. You should read up on them and see what fits your needs and wants.
As for the GPS thing, from my reading, the above post is correct. Just flash the fix when you flash the rom.
I use CM7 nightlies (currently on 10/16/11, #225) with Tiamat 4.10. I don't get the longest lasting battery, but I use the performance governor. I find I get better media streaming performance and slightly better data speeds.

ROM Reviews and Discussion

Hi guys,
Still on stock ROM, but looking to flash a new one really soon - looked through both Original and Development threads and haven't been very confident so far. Why?
The most popular ones seem to be Lightening and VillainROM, but I haven't found any comprehensive reviews of their battery life and performance - VillainROM doesn't have screenshots either. Mostly the posts on their threads are questions or debugging or pointing out bugs, so its hard to get a proper gauge.
So what are your thoughts on the ROMs so far? Looking for the usual - good battery, stability, performance. I don't care much for the blue of Lightening but as long as it works, it works. What makes it different from Villain?
Also appreciate any other ROMs that may be good to install!
Thanks!
One of the best and smoothest ROMs I've tried has been CyanogenMod 7. Its stable (even in the 7.1 RC), fast, good battery life and reliable. Check it out, its a definite favorite in my book
Sent from my Droid 1 CM7.1.0 RC1
So far I've only tested VillainROM. I'm waiting for a more stable CM7 to try it out, but until then VR seems to be okay. To be honest there's nothing special about it. Battery life is acceptable, it's close to a stock rom, it doesn't have bugs, it has Nimpo kernel, vrtweaks which let you install some mods more easily, and the devs are skilled and helpful. That's enough for me

I've now used villain, darkys, adam's aosp, CM7 and MIUI.
All great roms. Villain and darky are both quite close too stock TW. AdamG AOSP is as about as close to androidstock as you can get-which is clean and simple. CM7 is the ultimate ROM for the tweaker and hacker and its also v fast.
MIUI is the most visually different rom. It looks completely different and has some great visual cues. Battery life its also v good on the latest build (.29 beta 32). Its the one I'm using at the moment, but I switch between it and CM7 on occasion.
you won't go wrong with any and although they aren't fully stable (the non TW ones). I've never had any stability issues with them. Just be prepared to not have an fm radio or full bluetooth audio...
My 2 cents, hope it helps!

P.s. Not sure about lightening but one of the earlier builds of villain gave me the best battery life ever on this phone. I think it was 1.4, but this was about a month ago..

There are quite a few, VillainROM is included. You can also flash a BLN compatible kernel to make BLN work.
Thanks, I may want to stick close to TW-based ROMs for the time being until CM7 is stable and GS2-friendly then I've done MIUI before, its a fantastic ROM for older phones, but of course there's problems with translations sometimes and the UI gets old/too iphone after a while.
currently on lightening 2.2 with nimphetamine 2.04 kernal. More than happy with my battery. I get more than a days use out of it quite easily, battery loss is about 1% an hour in standby and the rom itself is very stable. Ive never had a force close, reboot or anything. Im using the steel blue theme too as i like the look of the icons more.
Ive no plans to try any other roms until a fully released cynagen rom is available which i will try, just to see what the fuss is about more than anything.
any ideas how close we are to a stable cm7 release?

I would also like to know.
A VillainROM user here along with ninphetamine kernel I find this the best combination, battery life is awesome and the devs are useful. It's smooth fast and just well top notch.
I've tried many roms but always come back to VR. The best thing to do is try them and find one for your own liking there are dozens to choose from now. In the future I'll try CM7 as I used to run that on my DHD but as of now I'm happy with the TW roms.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Batista70 ROM w/ Ninpo's 2.0.5 kernel here, so far so good. Runs smooth and quite battery-friendly.
I've used Lite'ning also but somehow the I've run into some battery drain issues with it before. Eye'ing CM7 once it gets a stable release.
The latest CM7 nightly, 13, is running really well, it all seems just as it was on my Desire so far, no crashes, just a lockscreen hang every now and again.
Don't know about the Bluetooth audio as I prefer a wired headset.

Aosp battle!

Now, I know that cyanogenmod is probably the most popular of all the aosp roms however, that's irrelevant because this is about the evo, not other phones. So, in your own words, which rom is the best aosp rom for the evo? Excluding miui, because that's a different sort of aosp.
Thanks.

Decks Rom to me is the best due to being so much cleaner and faster. The way it runs on my phone is amazing. Battery life. Performance. Just flawless for an aosp

I tried SalvageMod, didn't care for it since I got FC's and there doesn't seem to be much updates.
I have gone between CM7 and Decks a lot. So much lately that I am driving myself nuts. I want to stick with one.
I like Decks because it is a slimmer version and runs better. It also doesn't have as much misc. stuff/apps with it.
I like CM7 because of the nightlies, which also gives me headaches because I am always flashing, then if something sucks I go back to a previous version, sometimes having to wipe, etc.
I am most likely going to end up sticking with Decks since it runs better for me, and so I don't get the urge to try out a new nightly. LOL
I am not aware of any other AOSP ROM.
Lets face it, if it werent for CM7 we wouldnt have most of the AOSP roms for this phone that we do. DECKS is the best IMO. Its CM7 but tailored specifically for the EVO. Its VERY NOTICEABLY faster. More clean. Cant go wrong with it.
My phone has never run better than with SalvageMod! Even Decks which held that place previously. There are some features that I miss but haven't looked back for a second.
Lithid is an incredible Dev, and has produced a unique build of AOSP that will stand out from the rest. He also supports it directly, meaning you will hear from HIM if you ask a question.
I have tried cm7, decks, savaged zen and OMGB. None have quite the edge of SalvageMod. However, OMGB would be my second choice but I like something a bit more custom.

I tried cm7 a while back and it was just OK for me( no disrespect, just my opinion). After playing around with a whole lot of sense roms I'm now looking for something a little different for a while...so I'm also interested in the slickest aosp rom.

I see what you did there.
I tried Salvage Mod briefly, but there were some little details that bugged me; the notification pulldown located at the bottom of the screen, lack of Theme Chooser, and a couple other minor settings not available.
It's the small details that makes or breaks a rom for me. Deck passes all the tests, and runs much better on my particular phone than the full CM 7.1
Homage and gratitude are definitely due to cyanogen.. Without his team, we wouldn't have many of the improvements available to us.

I agree, cm7 is a very fast rom. GPS is weird at times. But can't argue with speed. I still use salvagemod tho simply for the simple things that are different.

Its a toss up, using Decks rom atm but with any AOSP rom I get bad wifi reception unless I am right next to my modem. That's the only thing I can say for Sense roms is that the wifi connection is better, at least in my case.
I'll admit, I was a huge CM Fanboy and deservedly so it's probably one of the most developed and feature laden ROMs available. MIUI never appealed to me. But, there was always something wonky happening then once most of the bugs were ironed out and I actually used it often enough I got tired of ADW.
I started flashing frank707's .zip that removed some of the extra apps and especially ADW and replaced it with launcher2. Then Deck came along and did it for me with an even more optimized ROM. Somewhere along the way I flirted with SalvageMod 1.2.1 but had some stability issues that were caused by the SavagedZen kernel that I stupidly blamed the ROM for. Flash forward to last week, I finally tried out SalvageMod 1.4 and gave it an honest chance and I think it's probably one of the most well developed and stable/fast ROMs that I've tried so far. It's different from CM based ROMs if that's what you're used to but it's simplicity is actually refreshing. There's some features that I'd like to have added but it's nothing that makes the ROM unusable.
I say give SM 1.4 a real chance, I don't think that it (or the devs for that matter) get the recognition deserved.

Rom recommendations..

I visit about one every two months or so and don't keep up with what roms are available.

I could and have looked in the the development section but I would rather get some suggestions from the XDA community.
I personally prefer mik's ROMs.
Some are posted here (mikg) but I get them from themikmik.com
I also enjoyed miui, it's a different flavor of ROM. Miui gets updated every Friday, but I found a stable version and stuck with it for weeks.
Of course there are your stock builds and ports, and the classic aosp ROMs.
I'm sure everyone has their favorites.
I've been running mik3d for months. Its sense 3.0. Its pretty awesome.
Good luck in your search.

MIUI. has scrollable Widgets now, best battery life of any rom I have tried and is awesome with V6, 3G and kickasskernelizer tweaks.
Currently using FEARMEde Bliss Hybrid sense3.5... it still has its quirks but love the look and feel. MIUI is great too... if you like the iPhone usability and feel MIUI is the way to go. My son loves it!
Depends what you want...
I love Deck for AOSP. built on CM7 with all the extras removed. Very minimalist and with savage zen's BFS kernel sickly battery life. I personally got my Evo to about 36 hours on medium use.
For sense there's a few ways to go. I personally have found that the sense 3.x ROMs are very sluggish irrelevant of the setup (God mode and whatnot). If you want a semi-sense 3.x feel though you could try Salvage-mod-sense RC1 which is built on Barnacles speedy port of sense 2.1. The dev added in the 3.0 lock screen, and camera app but for the most part its stock 2.1. It's stable and just as fast as the ROMs built off of the OTA Gingerbread updates for the Evo.
There's also the last mentioned ROMs based of the OTA update. I personally loved Swagged out stock, and Smooth and sexy Gingerbread.
A lot of people will say stay away from sense for the battery life alone, but I've noticed with the Freedom agressive kernel or Chop Suey 9.1 SBC I get battery life that's on par with CM7. Not as good as Savage zen, but a good 12-20 hours depending on usage.
Hope this helps.
I've had the best luck with MikG for sense roms, and I've tried them all lately. It also gets updated frequently.
MIUI is great, but I have found it to be annoyingly buggy. I would go with the previous commenters route and stick with one version that works instead of going for the weekly updates (unless they add 4G!).
Another ASOP option is the Nocturnal Xplod rom thats in the earlier stages of development, but still runs really well with some nice animations. If it's been a couple months and you want something different I would try this.
Try this one!

Best way to turn Evo 4G into media player?

So I have an Evo which I don't use for anything. It has not number on it and I don't need it as a back up. I use it only for listening to music (speaker only) and taking and watching videos. Sometime I may connect it to wifi to download a certain app or to watch something on YouTube. So this thread could be called a survey I guess? But what's the best ROM out here for me to put on the phone in my case? I basically want battery life + performance + louder speaker (the Evo speaker sucks compared to my other phones sadly). I flashed the 4 kornerz (sorry if I misspelled) ROM and flashed the beats audio and the underworld kernel, but noticed a lag after flashing that kernel so I re-flashed the stock kernel.
I have not had time to actually use it and test out how it goes with my usage but I think it'll be alright?
I have also used Energy ROM (kills my batttery too quick) and CM7 (phone speaker isn't loud enough) so what other ROMs would you recommend for me? Or what mods or kernels would work with 4kornerz ROM that would ensure better battery life?

That's exactly the kind of answer I'm looking for thanks =). I thought about trying an ICS build but wasn't too sure if I wanted to because I thought it might have some bugs or be laggy or have not so great battery life or sound quality decreased. But I'm going to test out 4 kornerz for a bit then will try your settings next. Thanks for the reply =).
Wait.. what's the ROM your using lol? When I first read it I thought you were talking about one of the ICS builds but I'm starting to have second thoughts. I'm not very familiar with every ROM out here because I barely use the Evo but can you post the link to the ROM? Or at least tell me what's the title of its thread lol? Decks 1.3d is his famous Gingerbread build. Search for it and you can't miss it. The thread title has decks, and. 1.3d in it I believe. Well I did find it and I will try flashing it as soon as I can. Is the stock kernel that comes with it the one that was recommended to me? Or where can I find the other kernel?
And I'm just kinda starting to get confused. Some people are saying 1.3 and some are saying 1.3d. Which one is better..? Logically thinking I would say 1.3d would be better since it probably just contains little fixes and nothing major updated but those little fixes may be a big problem to me without them so I think ill try out 1.3d unless I am told not to.

if you were having issues with cm7 you may experience the same with Deck's as his is just a custom version of cm7, yet designed to operate on Sprint more effectively.
You say the speaker wasn't loud enough with cm7? Did you adjust the settings in DSP manager?
I have 3 EVO's, 2 operational and on is my 3 year old's "phone," he is an angry bird addict! I have the phone on constant airplane mode and simply turn on wifi when I would like to connect. We are constantly asking him to turn it down so no sound problems here.
I would recommend the cm 7.2 rc1 from the cyanogenmod website, and don't forget gapps.
Again Deck's is based on cm7 though he hasn't updated in a long time and there have been many many improvements to the cm source since he stopped building. Cm7 is also still a work in progress, they are not dropping support for it, though they may bring cm9 to the EVO eventually 7 is the current supported version.
Honestly, I think the advice above is sound, but I still recommended deck 1.3 with Mason v14 kernal without hwa. Or if you want more battery, flash the slightly less stable v15rc G version. G for nonhwa. And then I would clock down to about 850mhz as your Max (don't know the exact value but the performance settings in deck shouldn't be too hard for you to figure out) and then use the wheatley kernel if you're on v15rc or intellidemandx if you're on 14. Smartassv2 would be my recommended governor, but it doesn't play well with media when the screen is off so you take your choice.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
Well sound was only a problem to me because I have an Epic 4G which, stock v.s stock, is louder. And I've tried CM7 on my epic and loved it but the sound was a problem the same as on the Evo. But I guess I would give up sound for better battery life lol. I'm going to flash deck's 1.3 right now. But I still can't seem to find the kernels you guys are talking about can someone please post the link to the thread?

I'm having one tiny problem.
I didn't install gapps (don't really need it) so I tried to bluetooth a file explorer.
I've noticed with bluetooth on the phone reboots? (It happened twice so far)
Ill keep trying the ROM out and see if I have more reboots. If its just bluetooth related then its not a problem

One more thing. Not sure if its the ROM or my phone but the power button seems to not work so well. It turns off the screen normally but turning the screen back on is the problem. It doesn't turn on by just pressing it I have to hold it down and then the power menu pops up and the screen turns on.

What ROM and kernel did you flash? Sleepiness is due to kernel undervolting issues... or kernel related at least. Bluetooth would be the same I would gather... sounds like stock kernel for you!
My original EVO loved underclocking, and I could squeeze a few precious hours out of the battery with the right kernel, governor and voltages. My replacement however will not undervolt at all... not even 25 mA... so each evo is different. I am of the opinion that stock is going to give you the best overall performance.

Wipe:

dalvik cache

Then flash the ROM, no gapps for you if you don't want.
Mason says it apparently works on GB or ICS, but I don't see how that could actually be possible... though I am not a kernel dev... but your issues do seem to stem from a kernel issue...
I'd imagine using a sense kernel based rom like swagged out stock N would get you the best musical results, since it has a kernel that was specifically built for the EVO, and not something AOSP generic. Maybe throw the zip file in for beat audio, or use poweramp instead.
Swagged out stock N 2.0.9 with universal aggressive lionfish 1.8 is doing REALLY well for me. It uses the go launcher, instead of sense.
haha luckily ICS is based off of a GB Kernel, Tiamat. Mason has two flavors of his popular kernel, the "G" version which CAN be used for Gingerbread AND NON-HWA ICS Roms, and the "I" version which is strictly used for HWA enabled ICS roms.
also jamieg71 has aosp gb build that is being updated more recently if you wanna check that out havent run it personally but if its anything like his ics build it will be great

[Q] recommend a ROM for speed and performance

I'm going through all the ROM's and its overwhelming so I'm asking for help. I'm looking for speed, performance, visual updated that also doesn't make me lose 4g, wifi, blue tooth or anything else major.
Please recommend any ROM's that might fit for me. I am rooted with clockwork mod recovery v5.0.2.2 with flashed supersonic_nolimit06-v101_020112 ROM.
thanks!
In my experience, I think that the stock setup works best. Maybe bump up the transition speed in Spare Parts.

My battery died so quickly with the stock setup, not to mention visually its not appealing. I've also have experienced less drag time with this recent rom. thanks though
I am having a good time with jamieg71 kwiq rom. Also decks 1.3d is good. If you can wait a bit longer we should be seeing a reloaded decks rom by jamieg71. Can't wait!!! Haha
SOS is great since its Sense 1.0 and based off the 4.67 update from Sprint. (Latest I think) so everything works and its definitely a visually appealing ROM. swagstr does great work, I'm running SOS X with ca1nes underworld kernel with SBC for a more complete charge. And with very heavy use I get roughly 8 hours. (I use my phone, for the phone lol.) Lots of good choices. Best thing to do is flash one and keep it for a couple of days and if it doesn't seem to fit your needs, try another. I tried many, but I keep going back to Swagged Out Stock.

Ok guys i have the perfect rom for you, just like Hockeytown1970 said 4 kornerz is the rom 4 u.It has speed, smoothness, working 4G,3G,bluetooth,wifi hotspot and tethering mod and very customizable and it has beats audio mod, anthrax kernel and volume+ to kick that sound up. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612933
Plenty of AOSP ROMs have a great combination of speed and performance, especially if you use a custom kernel.
I noticed you didn't say "features". There are a lot of decent Sense ROMs that are a lot more generous with their features than the tweaky DIY world of AOSP, many of them plenty fast...

Swagged out stock N (the one with the go launcher) with lionfish kernel (I use aggressive), with smartassv2 as your governor, is likely to be the fastest out there. It has a lot of performance optimizations that AOSP roms typically don't match.
