I just updated to mango. Any one knows how to turn on the wifi tethering option. The usb works but I have heard you can turn it into a hotspot. Help.
If you're not unlocked (developer or Chevron) you won't be able to do it.
If you are, read here.
You can also install this xap file. It has wifi tethering xml execution which will apply all the registry settings for you. I did the method linked by EnderPsp.

Can you elaborate how it works for you over USB? Thanks.

I don't understand your request, can you explain your ask? What USB?
Tethering enables you to share your cellular's data plan (3G/GPRS/etc) via WiFi.
No you can tether via USB using a focus I found it on Google, you have to be interop unlocked to make it a WiFi " hotspot "
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Well, I am interop unlocked and I just tried. Data connection off.
In Diagnisis, enter *#7284# to access tethering menu.
With "Zune Sync" I get this message:
Connection not shared
There's no cellular data connection to share right now. Check your cellular settings and signal, and try again.
With "Modem, Tethered call" and " Modem, USB Diag." you don't get Zune to start/sync thus no internet on the phone.
Is there another way?

Guys I have a Mogul and the $15 unlimited plan i called sprint customer care and inquired about tethering...They informed me however that I cannot. I attempted to do it anyway and got a user name and pw error. What can I do and is tethering possible?
Download and install the attached cab. Then open internet sharing on your phone, click conncet, then plug in yer usb cable to your computer. You will tether for free.

I tried this and get a invalid user name/password when trying to connect and it won't connect unless the USB is plugged in. Am I doing something wrong? Just updated to WM 6.1
And ideas?
When you open Internet Sharing program what options u get ? If you only get option using Phone As A Modem u need to edit registry HKLM\comm\internetsharing\settings
edit key 'ForceCellConnection' so it says 'Sprint PCS '
How would this work for Telus? (Canada)
Make sure you dont use PAM...phone as modem...they can tell when you are using this VERSUS using Internet sharing where the data connection is used. It appears that the phone is accessing the net for browsing on their end.
I have a verizon 6800 with DCD 3.1.5 and Internet sharing. I installed the WMModem as posted earlier. When I open Internet Sharing I press the connect, then plug in the usb cable. The computer sees the phone, but I get a message "Limited or No connectivity".
Under network connection Details this is what I get"
Physical Address 80-00-60-0f-E8-00
IP Address 169.254.66.5
Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
My internet sharing works if I use WIFIRouter, but don't always want to use this. Any ideas why this does not work? I'm able to follow instructions, but not too smart with the lingo, so please be gentle?
Kevin
how about alltel
will this work on alltel?

Not to sure about that DCD ROM version but you usually don't have to install that CAB as he includes that in his ROMs. That IP address is bad and that is why you can't connect. I have DCD 3.2.6 and all I do is run Internet Sharing and click on connect and then connect via USB and it works. At least for my XP machine. My Vista machine doesn't like my phone at all. I have even tried bluetooth and Vista is still having problems. Going to reload Vista again some day.
ruff_ryder, what ROM are you on? Did you try the CAB above to see if that works?
Other Setting
Don't you have to enable "Enable advanced networkfuntionality" under Start-Settings-Connections- USb to PC also when tethering?

Mine is checked so I would assume so as my internet sharing works.
Jambrose, thanks. I guess I'll just live with this, until I upgrade to DCD's new rom.

Will this also work got BT tethering? USB is not an option for mac users as no drivers are available
EDIT: Confirmed it works with BT as well. However, the connection doesn't seem to be stable enough for online gaming. It works for a while, then randomly the game will stop receiving data. This might be Sprint trying to curb people from playing WoW on their network.
I think it may be in that case that it may be bluetooth, not sprint that's giving you trouble.
I'm kinda lost....all this started after I updated the ROM now to 6.1 or whatever but when I open internet sharing the only option I have is PC Connection:bluetooth or USB.. b4 I had that plus sprint pcs data package or PAM. What or how do I fix that?
i can't download the cab files
any body getting this page or msg?

Getting ready to take the OTA froyo update. Can somebody confirm usb tethering still works without the additional $30/month? I know I'll need something like easy tether.
Thanks
P.S. I tried to search before posting but didn't see anybody confirm after taking the update.
It works for me!!
Thanks!
Here I go.
The option for USB tethering is still in the menu but it's marked out in grey, you can't select it.

I second that observation. Why would Sprint intentionally leave it visible but unselectable?
Over 3G, i am able to select and enable USB tethering. But " Data Call Failure- Error code 67". Though i have not tried over 4G yet, i'll see..
Its greyed out when you aren't connected to a computer. Mine always lights up when connected. Can't connect over 3G unless I have hotspot on my account. Then it works great!
It lets you enable it, but when you tap it after a few seconds it gives you Sprint PCS error code 67. Looks like they won't let you use the built in tethering without a plan add-on...
YOu cant touch the USB Tether option unless you have the $30 a month package. Otherwise you will just get errors.
You have to use something like EasyTether. When using easythether, your phone needs to be set on Charge only with USB debugging on.
PDANet! Don't you need software to run any connection off a phone?
usb tethering ONLY , i repeat ONLY works over WIFI unless you pay the $30 extra for the hotspot package.
usb tethering is grayed out but you have to be smart enough to figure out the 2 easy steps to not make it grayed out.
if you read the description for the $30 hotspot features one of them is the ability to use the Phone as a Modem on the EVO 4G
so... to recap
USB tethering only works over WIFI unless you paid for the $30/mth hotspot feature.
Has anyone tried or used Tetherbot on the EVO. It's my tethering app of choice because it does NOT create a network connection on the host computer, it simply an ADB command to enabled a socks5 proxy thru the phone. It's easy to stealth because no drivers are required.
It works for me with out the hotspot charge and over 3g
Gives me a SPRINT PCS Vision error.

Well I'm sorry to say, if tethering was very important to you, you probably should have gotten a different phone. There is no way to do wifi "internet sharing." There is a way to do wired tethering, but it involves installing a special modded HTC driver for USB connection and setting up a dialer connection on each machine you use it on.
I have the 64bit driver and a few instructional notes in a zip file on my skydrive:
http://sdrv.ms/OYxLMP
This was my source for most of the info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=929468
You may be able to get the 32bit driver there if you need it.
I believe all HTC & Samsung WP7.5+ handsets have wifi internet sharing. Most Nokia handsets have it too, if they've received all their updates.
DVP has no hardware support for wireless hotspot, sorry
Now that I test it, I don't think the wired tethering hack works after the Tango update. I always needed to turn off "data connection" but leave "3g data" active in order to get it to work, but after the tango update, those two settings are no longer separate. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I couldn't get it to work.
Hello, so i have a spare phone at my home but i don't have a wifi router.
I wanted to ask is it possible to turn my phone into a wifi router using my pc internet. I know that it is possible to use it as a wifi hotspot by sharing your data plan or reverse tether pc internet but that's not what i'm looking for.
As i mentioned earlier i wish it to work as a wifi router so it should be able to work as a wifi hotspot but not sharing my data plan but the reverse tethered internet from my pc.
I have an idea what you need:
1. Your Computer has to have drivers to host an USB tethering connection. So far, it only has the drivers to receive one.
2. Your mobile has to have a driver to receive an USB tethering connection. So far, it only has the drivers to host one.
Edit: This alredy exists and is called Reverse Tethering, you find it in this forum. First search, then talk...
Routing to the wifi tethering should work, if not, have a look in the Routing tables.

Lol you don't have to be such a jerk.
I had tried it some time ago. Otherwise i wouldn't have asked this question.
And to be sure 100% i just tried it again. Tethering part works but sharing it via wifi hotspot doesn't.(The guy who made it confirmed it doesn't work in that way, that's why i'm looking for a solution)
I tried using this method then and now too. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345
i finally rooted my moto X pure. hotspot does not work on its own and i dont know how to edit the settings for it. So i tried looking for apps but some of them that i once had does not work.
Barnacle doesnt work
Wifi tether router gives a giant mcafee warning stating its a threat with Android/Bokbe.A!Gen or Malware for basic
FoxFi i have to pay 8 dollars for it when i didnt need to before
clockworkmod works but its usb tether
any other options?
Is your carrier restricting you from using your data plan to host a WiFi hotspot? Mine works just fine with no additional apps required. When I first turned it on, it made sure my data plan supported the feature then worked as expected.

Usually tethering is only blocked if you have an unlimited data plan

* [Bug] Fix some multisim related bugs
_New World Order (NWO)_
yeah i tried that, doesnt work. thanks.
ill either unroot entirely or switch to another OS
use clockworkmod on a pc and make that pc a gateway for a wireless router (set pc ip address manually to something static) configure the router properly, then just connect all your other devices to that wireless router
UPDATE:
Wifi tether creator replied to my email saying mcafee has a false positive on it because its root, mcafee never tested it.
but what i did discover is this. when i played with the wifi tether app, they have the ability to allow tether completely wifi. in it contained was a LTE patch to allow tethering and it worked. if anyone is able to get the patch out, then jackpot we have tether ability

Right, the above build.prop edit eliminates this phone home verification. I've tested it successfully also on a cricket unlimited plan.
