Like the title says... woke up to the HTC boot screen and it wont boot past it. I bought it on Nov. 18th so it has been 34 days and ATT will not replace it in store because it is 4 days past the return date. Warranty will cover it, but this is frustrating right before the holidays. BAck to the old Tilt2 I guess.

Woke up this morning, once again with a dead Surround. This was my replacement device that warranty covered from December. Another one is on the way from ATT, but I was wondering if there is some lemon law where I can get my money back or something? If my phone is going to keep dying every few months I don't want it.

in texas theres a lemon law but i dont know if you have one
The rep on the warranty line said after 2 or more FRU's they will negotiate a replacement device. Which is fine, as I may be negotiating for a different phone if this one dies.

The first one died unplugged, moments after I woke up and shut my alarm off and unplugged it. The second one was plugged in and the bright white screen woke me up in the middle of the night. Both of them acted funny before they self-bricked, like forgetting my IE favorites and deleting some apps randomly.
I had this same problem. Replaced under warranty and so far I haven't had that same issue. I did have a different issue though, where it didn't read the whole memory properly as referenced in this thread:

I'm worried this device is prone to failures, as I've now had two devices acting up. I'm trying to get AT&T to give me a different device, but they said I can only do same device exchanges under warranty.

They do in fact have a policy for device replacement for multiple FRU's. Meaning, if you are like me, and have already replaced two under warranty (meaning you are using your third device) if you have problems with the third they can negotiate an alternative device if it is still under warranty. Call the warranty exchange number over and over until you get someone who is knowledgeable and is willing to work with you. And keep calling with every complaint so they have it on file!
Good to know. I guess I'll just go and exchange it now and hope the next one either lasts forever or calls it quits ASAP. Warranty is running short these days :\
The warranty is one year from original purchase date or 90 days from activating the replacement device, whichever is longer.
My Surround also wouldnt boot up. happened last week. It was on my desk and not in use. I watched as it said goodbye and shut off. Battery drained and turned off, no big deal as I tend to let that happen before plugging it in for the night.. Only this time it wouldnt get past the white HTC screen. I did the whole volume button reset thing and still nothing. Ended up talking with HTC and getting it shipped to Texas to get it looked at. next day it was in the mail back home. Should be here in the next day or so.
Im curious to see if the paperwork will let me in on what happened. Although I sort of doubt it.

Well, mine likes too.
1. I used my phone as a alarm clock. Every night I connect it to the wall charger and leave it turned on resting on the night table. The next day guess what, I woke up late. The phone never sounded the alarm, in fact it won't make any sound at all. Have to reset it to return it to normal.
2. There have been a couple of times where I have not received calls in hours. When I press the power button to check the status, the phones goes throughout the complete power up sequence. But the phone was already powered on the last time I checked a couple hours ago and the battery is full. Its like it powered off by itself at anytime without warning!
3. Try to use the phone while charging and you'll notice touch screen response gets a a little jittery. But I found a "cure" for that. Hold your phone in away that your fingers make physical contact with the metal frame around the display. This will minimize the jittering effect on the touch screen.
4. Camera autofocus needs prescription lens. My HTC Surround digital camera have a hard time trying to focus on objects more than 15 feet away. It gives focus confirmation but the pictures always look blurry.
Those are some of the bugs I found in my HTC Surround purchased from AT&T last November. I'm sure they are not the only ones!
Those are known bugs, but seemingly have no correlation between devices randomly dying or not. My first surround had all those bugs and died, my second one showed little signs of any of those bugs and died anyways. Hoping my third one dies within warranty so I can get a new phone :/
Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster here...
Two days ago, the touch screen and home row buttons intermittently stopped working. I am not sure what triggers it, but the frequency has increased to where the phone is no longer usable from a practical standpoint . Usually turning off the screen and unlocking the phone remedies the problems for a few minutes.
I saw several posts that this may be related to rooting and dropping the phone. I am running stock ROM (never rooted), and I haven't dropped my phone in over a month. I was wondering if anybody has found a fix for this yet other than buying a new phone. I bought my phone used off of eBay over a year ago, so I do not think that it is under warranty.
I should also mention that I did a factory reset which has not helped.
It probably has ssomething to do with the screen getting grounded or not grounded. Like a loose connection or a short circuit. For a while I was having similar problem and found that messing with the little copper connectors on the back of the top half that are exposed when the keyboard is out fixed it. Unfortunatly it was short lived, one day my touchscreen went out completly and I had to take it to Sprint who replaced the whole top half of the Shift. Of course, I had TEP so it was no charge.
Hmm, assumming its just a error with calibration, in mikshifted-G and SS, there is a option to calibrate your screen, this may fix it. You'll need to be rooted for this though.
If its a hardware issue, then, your pretty screwed without a warrenty.

If you have TEP, it doesn't matter how long ago you bought it. Just take it in, they'll repair it no charge.

Thanks for the ideas, but unfortunately tinkering with the copper and screen calibration did not help. I think I am just SOL.
Update: Sprint replaced the phone for $35
So I took the phone to Sprint to see what they could do. They opened the phone and tinkered around with something inside (which actually fixed the touchscreen problem but left the casing jacked up). When I asked what was actually wrong with the phone, they said that they did not know. However, they said that they needed to order a part for $35 to fix the screen. When I came back a couple days later, instead of installing a new part, they gave me a refurbished phone with a 30 day warranty.
Although it only carries a 30 day warranty, a refurbished replacement phone for $35 is a pretty solid deal (especially since I'm on contract without insurance or warranty). I hope this helps anyone with similar screen problems.

I've been runnin the unity rom for a couple of months now( i was) with no issues at all, when yesterday morning my phone turned off itself and i haven't been able to bring it back to life. i dont know if i have the bad chip, never cared to check but i regret it now lol... any sugestions would help.... also i have tried turning on w/o sim card with a different battery, also tried to get it to bootloader but it just wont turn on at all.. thanks in advance

Does the computer recognize it?

If you're talking about no power at all, it doesn't sound like a software issue. It sounds like an electrical issue.
If the screen backlight comes on when you hit the power button, then it could be software or electronic (borked chip, broken circuit board, etc)
Plugging it in, even if it's a dead phone, should still charge the battery if the electrical circuits are good. The LED will come on at orange or green and that should tell you if there is physically electricity running through the circuits.
If you get nothing, something in the phone died. I'm starting to realize the MT4G has a pretty poor build quality.
If the battery is charging and the backlight comes out, maybe a quick vibrate to indicate charging, then you could have some kind of an electrical short in the circuitry somewhere.
Or you just have a bad power button. That's a possibly. But that's odd that it turned itself off. That's what makes me think the power button itself isn't what's wrong.
In all cases it sounds dead. If you can't get to the recovery screen there's not much you can do.

no led lights it just died lol... it wont do a thing. im starting to think that it has some kind of short between the battery and the circuit that distributes power through out the phone.. thats my best guess.thanks
You can also check to make sure the battery isn't the problem by removing it and plugging the phone in. Again, the best you'll get is a brief flash of the backlight. But if you don't get that, you can be sure the battery itself isn't the problem.
Or just put a new battery in and see if that works.
This is highly unlikely to be the cause. But it's all about narrowing the possibilities. I've been fiddling with electronics for 20 years now. One thing I'm sure of is that you should never discount the really unlikely source of a problem. It won't usually be the answer, but every once in a while something you'd just never suspect ends up being the culprit.
I had the exact same issue, earlier this year. Your emmc chip gave you the bird. Go into Tmobile store, tell then your phone won't turn on, you tried the normal tricks, but nothing works. Act a little dumb with them,I did that an got a new one under warranty for $5, came in the mail the days later. DO NOT MENTION ANYTHING BOUT YOUR PHONE BEING ROOTED. If you do, your gonna have to pay full price for a new one or though the issuance company a $130(or whatever your deductible is).
Trust me on this, it works. I'm still using the phone they sent to me back in June.

I charge my tablet once or twice a week, however, since a week ago my tablet did not turn on after leaving it for a week without charging.
The tablet does not charge, does not turn on and I have tried:
- Different cables.
- Different chargers (official too)
- Direct charging from a computer.
- All possible button combinations.
- Leave it charging all night.
After all the above, still not working. But if I leaving it charging for more than an hour, the back feels a little warm, but does not give any signs of life, it has totally stock rom, never rooted.
Samsung refuse to repair because I loose my proof of purchase, fortunately I still kept my old tab s2
Now, I´m selling it for parts on ebay.

I just had this same issue, Samsung did fix mine though.. it was the LCD waiting on them to return it back to me.

Wow, it sound like LCD issues, very simillar to LG G4 with his screen of death, I'm stay with my S2 for some time and see if it is a extended issue or my tab was the lucky one (ironic mode).

Two reports after it has been on the market for nine months doesn't mean the sky is falling.
Two reports on XDA... probably I´m paranoid. I just wait, the tab s3 its a beautifull tab, thanks for your reply.
I had same experience for a moment. Then I realised that I had set my tab for minimum brightness while being in a bright room. One may laugh, but it is very difficult to distinguish if you have black wallpaper.
Mine would not boot, the screen did work though, I could go into download mode and everything.
Sent it in for replacement and they replaced the motherboard and the screen.
Either they were lazy to see that the screen worked, or there is a screen problem that can cause many problems.

Add me to the list of issues. Tablet wouldn't turn on after being dead for a few days. Let it charge overnight with no luck. I can feel it's on after hitting the power button because touching the screen causes it to vibrate as if I'm entering a wrong passcode on the lock screen. Has to be something wrong with the OLED panel.
Edit: Sent the device to Samsung. They are replacing the screen assembly and motherboard just as they did with the other poster in this thread. I hope this doesn't become a widespread issue.
I was taking my tablet out from a very tight case. After doing so, my screen went black, no video. Sent it in to be repaired. Due to being an intern9model, they refused to touch it. When I got it back, I prayed and slightly bend it in the center of the tablet. Voila, screen came back on!

Galaxy Tab S3 will not switch on!
They say the same thing but say to use just Power and Volume Down for 7 seconds.
Even better, I found a confirming post on ifixit site. I trust ifixit a little more myself...

This solution says to use Power and both Vol + and - at the same time.
I don't have this tablet but am thinking about getting it (less so now that I found this thread (Black Screen of Death? Yikes!)). Posting this info here on the hope that it helps someone else with this issue. If you try this solution, *PLEASE* post a reply and indicate whether it worked or not so others know if this solution is worth anything or not.
I've had my Tab S3 since August of 2017 and no issues. It is a work horse especially on the road (business travel).
Thanks for posting solutions. As to concern of a chronic issue, I'm unconcerned enough that I'm waiting for mine to arrive Mon. This thread was started back in Nov. I'd be surprised if Samsung didn't get a handle on it by now (if it's repeatedly been a problem), especially given that it was released as their flagship tab. I've read of issues with the S3 here and there, but for the most part, people seem to have a great experience with it.
Same issue. Had this since it's release - 3 yrs now. Worked great up to this. Now completely dead. For $600 not acceptable.

Still having a problem with black screen of death. I had made a post about it earlier in the week but no response. I have kept everything basically the same, except I use Magisk 21.4-23 (newest), and TWRP 3.5.2 upgraded from 3.5.0 like maybe a couple months ago. Ever since last month have had the problem. I have brand new batteries installed as I thought maybe that was what was causing it (previous experience). Screen goes black, phone vibrates a couple times, then I have to battery pull to try to power on. Sometimes it works, other times it doesnt. In other instances have had screen freeze and get all static and soft reboot itself. I can see the white captive touch buttons working and sound but screen does not wake. Battery pulls for X amount of time does not solve the screen issue. I have flashed correct firmware several times in ODIN. I had this black screen issue and phone died while at the store earlier today. I need a phone thats dependable! This has been happening on any custom roms I use 14.1-18.1. I'm so frustrated I nearly broke my phone in half last night!
Any ideas what's causing the screen issue?
I had a very similar problem on my Galaxy S7. It used to suddenly shutdown, sometimes reboots by itself. Sometimes it won't just turn on at all except after some time.
Sometimes, it vibrates, shows the bootsplash for a few milliseconds, then shutdown.
What a coincidence that when I upgraded to TWRP 3.5, it was when the problem started to hit.
I was using crDroid based on R, It wasn't stable, so I thought the problem was the ROM/Kernel/Recovery. I tried an already known stable ROM.
The same thing happened, then I was semi sure that it is on hardware problem. I teared the device apart. The problem was .. Water Damage.
I thought the phone was water proof/resistant. What a disappointment. Anyway I've cleaned every molecules of water from the phone. It worked fine afterwards.
But I lost the battery percentage diode or something, so the phone can't read battery percentage/voltage.
It took me 3 months to know all these things. I hope it be of help to you.

So I did some more testing tonight. I first downgraded TWRP to 3.5.0 from 3.5.2 had same issues. Now i'm on 3.4.0, and I pounded on the display upside down while in recovery. It did the reboot thing and screen went black. Phone would not power up, even after removing and re-installing batteries. It has taken several tries with and without plugging it in. Finally it has booted up and I went into recovery to re-flash yet another rom. The phone would do the black screen thing at random and have issues if placed down too hard.
Obviously it's not software related it's hardware.
So my question is the display bad or the motherboard?
Should I just look into getting a 5G brand new phone or try to get it repaired somewhere?
I've been considering switching to T-mobile once I get a 5G device.

That's obviously water damage. I used to get all that on my old S7. It is fixable, you need to untie your motherboard, heat it till it literally dries up. Then it won't repeat that BSOD thing.
However, if you tried to boot the device while there's still some water, it will cause more damage to the components, diodes.
Galaxy S5 is for about 40$ in my country. You should consider buying another, more recent phone. Midrange 5G phones are for about 250$ - 400$ here. Though I still miss 2014 phones.

I have no idea how to untie a motherboard or take apart my phone. I'm sure I'd end up doing more damage to it knowing my luck. I have no such tools either to take my phone apart. I've seen S5 for sale here in US for $50 or less and motherboards for a little less. Right now it's hard to afford a brand new 5G phone.
I'm not sure how my phone got water damage? I've always been careful with it over the years never submerged or anything.

Water Damage usually shows a few days up to a few weeks after it's interaction with water. I thought S7 was water resistant.
A tiny drop of water can cause this issue.
Don't know why people rush towards 5G phones, knowing it ain't stable just yet. I've heard USA is shutting down 2G/3G, so the least you should own is a Dual-VoLTE device. I got A70 for ~162$.

Yes 3G has been getting shutdown. 5G is still building out the network. If I were to stay with 4G I might as well stick with S5 since I know it and all my data is saved with titanium backup.
I have read to soak my phone in isopropyl alcohol for up to a couple hours. https://www.orduh.com/water-damaged-samsung-galaxy-s5/
It might be cheaper for me to just find another S5 right now. Can I restore backed up titanium data to a different phone?

And screen takes forever to wake when receiving phone calls sometimes I miss them. It's very delayed.

So I looked at the water damage indicator sensor. My phone's patch is still white with a reddish x pattern, there is no water damage. If there was damage it would be all red.
There's no other explanation for BSOD the way you described except for damaged components, unless the phone was water damaged, it must have received a very hard hit.
That hit will definitely affect the screen, if the phone was refurbished, you won't notice it, cause the motherboard is connected to a good working device.
If you think it is software, there's bootloader, baseband, kernel, and system that you can change to confirm your thoughts.
It's very easy to untie S5, only needs one tool.

I know it's not software the bootloader, kernels, baseband have all been same and worked fine up until this month or so. I smacked the front of it while in recovery to see if it would have the issue. Sure enough it is hardware related! I just messaged a local repair shop on how much a fix would cost. I dont feel comfortable taking apart my phone and I dont have tools or anything.
