so lets say that google were to release the source code to ICS on the 19th (wednesday) at there special ICS event in Hong Kong. how long do you think it would take till we had some alpha builds going for the evo. not looking for an exact date. just wondering what you guys are thinking.
they would get something working the same day. When I mean working *boots up then reboots*
now i give it a month before anything even close to stable comes out.
If the ICS OS is just being released, don't hold your breathe on source code for too long. It took them, what, almost 3 months to release GB?

i thought aosp source was released same day as when it drops on the nexus phones... i think the 3 month wait your thinking of is the source for the GB htc kernels.
im not really sure how long it took for aosp to be released so dont take my word on it because by the time i rooted in like march cm7 was already well underway in development...

I think the SDK was released before source last year, & a couple devs were able to make a booter just off the SDK itself.

i don't know what they will add to it but i really hope they don't throw adw on it like they do cm7 that is mainly the only reason i don't use cm7 because i like the strait up android 2.3 launcher vs. adw. the new ics launcher looks very nice so thats all im really looking forward to haha

well figuring that the nexus s is pretty closely spec'ed to the evo, id say itll be ok. it wont run as well as it will on the newer phones, but if the nexus S can handle it, (as the leak vid showed a few weeks ago) id say were good.

Phone will be announced today but not available, that could be a few weeks or a month. Then you get AOSP source, then devs start porting it. So we're looking at well into 2012 before you'll see any ICS based rom's on the Evo.
According to the live stream, the SDK was just released. Should be on here in a little while:

If the SDK is out, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see something that at least boots by the end of the week. Maybe not for the Evo but at least for one phone out there.
SDK emulator fun to mess with, but still slow as a G1!
Bring on CM9!!!!!
I'm hoping CM9 comes with the stock interface of ICS. Please stop bundling the ADW launcher into the builds.. Although I use ADW EX, I'd really like to hold the ability to just "turn off" ADW and go to the stock Android interface.

I would have to agree; the new launcher is really very slick.
I think there will be one more build on cm7 to finalize it. I think that cyanogen is working ICS but don't quote me on that. It still might take some time before cm9 nighlys.

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.
From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

Several months after the Nexus.
Which is why I will probably end up going back to the Nexus after its updated.
The G2 was touted as being vanilla Android but its not really.
So it will be however long TMO takes to port Gingerbread for the G2.
It wont be Google we are waiting on.

Have to wait on the OTA update.
I agree on that by the time they release it OTA I will have the Nexus S by then maybe even another toy. But the only reason why I love Android is the modding it's the greatest part of all I have all the custom rom's on both the Nexus One and G2 and flash sometimes multiple times a day waiting for the OTA weres the fun in that?
Meh, nothing that amazing in Gingerbread anyway.
Only thing amazing is that on / off animation...
It may not be crazy amazing stuff but I'm always down for some performance tweaks and fixes. And that on off animation is totally worth it.

Our beloved N1 losed the biggest devs:
-Paulobrien left several months ago
-Evil shows up very rarely
-Micromod sold his N1 so no more updates
-Rodriguez ''disapeared'' since january
Only a few devs are still here but the ''big heads'' left
No more Desire or Desire HD to N1 ports?
Oh the sweet times when we used to have incredible roms every 2 days and we didn't know what to choose...
It is a sad and inevitable decline. But at least we have Cyanogenmod. If the N1 lost support for that, i'd probably get a new phone. We look pretty safe for a good while now though.
Makes me sad cause I still don't wanna leave the nexus one:-(. What else is worth it? The nexus s ROM support hasn't really exploded yet, so I dunno where else I'd go.
I don't know about you.. but I've never had the need to try anything else than CyanogenMod, so I can't really say I'll miss or worry about the other devs being gone.
Paulobrien,Evil and Micromod were the ones who ported Desire roms into N1, without them we are stuck to ''plain'' roms
Desire HD port need some works and I doubt someone will port Desire gingerbread to N1
Desire ROMs are in decline - because nobody is interested enough to finesse them, but GB ROMs are crawling from under every corner - because it's new and fun. Even though they're mostly beta-quality - because everyone is waiting for the official GB update.
When GB will be on Desire, and only then, you'll see if there is any development. Right now there's nothing to develop.
You have lot people waiting for a faster and more stable Desire HD rom
But as I said the only one to really work on it is Evil, other devs are just cooking MIUI and CM7 instead of porting something new
You forget one of the best dev's in the list, Enomther.
Enomther has always been rare

Took the words out of my mouth. Did a new worthwhile phone come out this past month or something? I suspect (as someone else mentioned), most are just waiting for Google to finally release GB. I myself have been bouncing around MIUI, and GB ROMs. Now I'm back to stock with a blackbar theme and I'm pretty peachy. Long live the Nexus One!

Your post reminds me of that old saying "the calm before the storm" lol. And yes this is true, the mytouch 3G I switched from went pretty dead after being stuck on 1.6 forever and once an "official" release of 2.1 let out, devs trickled back in and it heated up again, I think once 2.3 officially drops for the N1 that it is gonna start a firey oven of optimized tastey roms.. Personally I think the devs are just bored of 2.2 and want to play with something new and 2.3 just isn't in a good enough standing right now for them to attempt to "optimize" it..

Also agree. Let TSM get their hands on it first
After running stock for a few days (during that whole ZOMG my 3G is gone fiasco) I was about ready to throw it out the window.
After a whole days worth of prepubescent tantrums. I don't want to touch this. I think I'd rather rock Adryn's froyo SC than a P3 GB leak. Haha.
If owners were going to release anyways then i'm sure its all about where the credit goes. That's why P3 released IMO. I am glad, however, that he chose the side of advancing the android os rather than holding grudges.
I don't flash any ROM anymore that isn't deodexed (theme-able), debloated (though I do like the TW video player and Media Hub), and de-Binged (though I still find Bing to be useful, that doesn't mean I want it built into my ROM). Therefore, like some of you have already said, I will wait until it's released as a custom ROM by Nitro, TSM, or one of the other devs who have worked on the Fascinate for more than a week or two.
[EDIT]: Oh, yeah, forgot to mention - I am also going to wait for a voodoo kernel (actually I forgot that this would install a new kernel). That looks to be a much longer wait than for someone to de-B it (deodex, debloat, de-Bing) it, since, as I understand, no kernel source has been leaked. It took a couple of months, as I recall, after the DL30 leak, for a Froyo voodoo kernel to be released. That was because no kernel source had been leaked, only the functional ROM build. The voodoo kernel was based on the official ED01 release after Samsung posted the kernel source.
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
Save yourselves the trouble and do not flash until there is a less buggy and de binged version. At the very least we know that there is a Fully Functional GB rom on Verizon for the Fascinate.
I am very surprised. I didn't think samsung would develop gingerbread this fast. They took almost a year to put out froyo then 2 months later we have gb.

Actually, this is an old engineering build. I heard about it a while back, just never got to see it.
I wonder how long till we get an OTA of Gingerbread?
I would imagine it will be a little while. Verizon is notorious for continually pushing things back, and I don't see why this OTA would be any different.

Lol we're going to get CM9 buddy. We'll be officially supported by Cyanogenmod since now we have MTD like other Galaxy S variants.
I understand why you aren't in any way optimistic, however CM6 was discontinued due to it not being popular enough, CM7 is nearly finished, and it only took a long time since we weren't supported by Cyanogenmod and we didn't even have Gingerbread source until 2 months ago.
Now, I'm 95% sure our phone is picked up by Cyanogenmod and we will get official CM 7.2 as well as CM9.
When will that happen? Who knows? But we will get it, and I guarantee we will have at least an early build of CM9 in the coming months.
Don't lose faith
And OP: Did you actually expect our phone to get ICS? It took over a year to get Gingerbread after it's initial release, and I don't think Samsung will spend another year updating a phone that no one's going to have next year. We will get ports though, I'm sure of that. (WORKING Ports, that is. Not the one based off of the SDK)
You guys know the epic sucks major donkey balls on updates, why get yourself all worked up about something that will never happen? Just setting yourself up for disappointment. If you don't like it you have one of two options, use your phone as its built for (calls, texts, web) or buy a new phone just for an update.

Not all. I'm milking this pup as long as possible since I'm relatively rural and LTE will most likely be a late rollout.
Sent from my hoe. Forgive the typoes; it's an Epic.

[...] a Samsung spokesperson has said that the company will not offer the update due to the hardware specifications of the older Galaxy devices, in that they are limited to and fully optimised for the Gingerbread experience.[...]
Ha, ha ha, ha. They really claimed "fully optimised"? It took a lot of work to bring Gingerbread anywhere near stable, let alone "optimised". Also, isn't it optimized? Oh well, we never expected it in the first place, and even Gingerbread (broken as it was) was a surprise. If ICS is really wanted on the Epic, someone brighter than I will find a way to port it, I'm sure. At the same time, I'm quite happy with my phone.
Even if ICS came to the i9000 GSM Galaxy S, it would never ever come to the Epic 4G.
Why? We only have 512 MB of flash storage. ICS is big, and this would give us very little space for /data.
Fortunately, it is possible for us to work around this by putting /data on a SD card, but making the modifications for it would take time.
This is one of those things where MTD support is useful, since /system can now be resized.
