[Q] Dual Booting - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hi,
Just want to ask if there is possibility for dual-booting as following:
Android - From NAND
Windows 7.5 - From SD.
Because i still want to use droid as my main OS/ROM, so im asking is there any possibility to run Win 7.5 from SD and Droid from NAND ?
Thanks in advance.

+1 i have exactly the same question... please help!!!!!!
advises?suggestions?maybe...links???

No, my understanding is, WP7 cannot be booted off SD, so you are stuck with WP7 off NAND and Android off SD. I have it set up that way and am very happy with the way it works.

and android from sd card goes slow?¿??¿?boots slow????? any con?

Yeah. Same Here.
Im using NAND rom now, and im impressed with the speed on my HTC HD2. I Really love to use WP 7.5 too, because it looks just awesome but i dont know if the Android from SD can match the speed of NAND - i dont actually care abou speed of boot, but about speed of room itself i use lot of 3D games and apps that needs lot of procesing power..so can you tell us about cons and comparison between NAND and SD..thanks in advance man

It is somewhat laggier compared to the same Android version run off NAND, but not to the point of being a nuisance. I talk about NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V3.0 (Android-2.3.5) only, because it's the only one I experienced in both NAND and SD options. Lets just say off NAND it runs natively, as if it was always supposed to be there from get go, off SD it runs without problems or glitches for me, but not as fast. HOWEVER, given the advantages of having both WP7.5 Mango and Android, I think it's a negligible trade-off.

As far as running apps on Android SD - I didn't notice any major changes. A big advantage for me with having Android is watching videos, as through Zune and WP7.5 it's a whole lot of headache, compared to simplicity and omnivorousness of Android - files can be just dropped onto your SD card and you are away. No lag of any kind to report when watching videos.
My advice would be to try it. If you don't like it - just remove the Android and the partition and stick with WP7.5 or unlock and format the card and go with whatever you would like to go. But chances are you will barely notice the difference in speed and performance.
Until WP7.5 Mango I was with Android off NAND, simply because I wasn't terribly impressed with previous attempts at WP7. I gave some versions a try and invariably returned to Android. Once proper Mango was out, I was torn and couldn't decide which one I would want to stick with. With dual boot I got the best of both.

Oh, almost forgot - e-BOOKS! I read a lot of e-books and WP7 is useless, I mean USELESS when it comes to document handling. Android off SD handles books gloriously - complete with book shelf, pages turning, fonts and backlight options.
Don't have a lot of 3D games, so can't really comment on graphics for those.
I can use Android for days before switching to WP7.5, you just use it as if it was your main OS - the two exist on your phone as very separate entities without crossing over. So text messages received in one will not be showing in another and you will have to remember which one it was. Files, music and photos will also belong in separate OSs, so you will have to add the same things twice for each if you want to use them on both.

Hi enigma! Can you please help with the process of installing Android in SD card while running nand mango? Thanks!

I found this solution for Audio Books on WP7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147373
It creates a fake podcast that you import via Zune and sync to your device. It remembers playback position and works very well.
EDIT - sorry, I sooo misread your comment. HA! Yeah, ebooks are a bit cumbersome. There's a free reader though. Begins with an "F", but don't remember the name off the top of my head. It will read directly from your dropbox account. So you can put epubs and stuff in there, and this app will allow you to open and read them.

There are a few tutorials and a video tutorial, just search for it. The process is fairly straightforward. Make sure you install storage unlock on your WP7 beforehand, otherwise you will not be able to use Android on SD or SD for any other purpose. You will need to unlock your SD before rebooting into Android every time, as WP7 will lock the card on startup.

The problem is with loading anything other than pictures, music and videos through Zune. You either read it online through the dropbox or e-mail it to yourself. Crappy idea all around. No problems finding readers, problem getting your books onto a device. The reader is called Freda. Had to laugh at Acrobat PDF reader available on the market - to read what?
With Android you just have your readers (depending on the format you want to read, not all support every format out there), get your books onto your card and away you go. Couldn't be simpler. Hopefully WP7.5+ versions will correct the injustice done to docs and books.

I, too, am looking forward to when WP7 is more comprehensive.
Yeah, having Adobe Reader seems useless if you can't get the files to the device. Skydrive is helpful with that though. Can navigate to the skydrive files in Office and they open right up in Reader. Cumbersome in comparison to Android. Luckily, I'm an audiobook person.
Working on figuring out whether I want WP7 for audio or Android. Will need to test the battery drain to know for sure.

[Q] New rom for HD2

Hey guys (and maybe girls?),
After about 8-9 of fighting with my phone, I've managed to install android on my HTC HD2. Now, I got this rom/version (I'm newb so.. I'll be more than glad for some explainations) I've found *HERE*.
So, the ptoblems are: SD Card is mounted to read-only mode, I can't take a picture, can't listen to music, run apps and so on.. after about 10min since booting android its becoming unmounted. What eles, thephone is super laggy, I can't run apps and games, and it's driving me crazy because I bought the phone for android and the only good OP worked on it is WM..
So, do I need the regular DESIRE build? or stick with DESIRE HD ones?
If there's a better build that what I've brought there, can I have the thread or download?
Another question, if I'm getting new SD Card (I got only 8GB for now, I need atleast 16GB for all my music, movies and stuff), I just need to copy all the things on the old one and everything will work properly? (after I'll switch a build ofcourse).
(Btw, sorry about grammer mistakes, it's morning over here ;])
THANKS!!
Up. Need it fast =\
Come on guys, I need it badly, I got school tomorrow and I got phone that's bearly works..
i have the same MDJ version and working quite good for me propably you need to format again your sd card
What class is your SD Card?
Not sure what the issue with the build is... you should try looking through the build thread. But if you bought this phone for android, you might as well install android to your nand (internal memory) with magldr... it will be much more like a real android phone that way. Just out of curiousity, why didn't you just buy a real android phone if you just wanted android? This phone take a decent amount of work and learning to get it to run as well as a native android phone... but for the price you can get the HD2 for sometimes, it can run android pretty well... but you have to be willing to put the hours in to read the forums and learn what you're doing.
Also, this section is for sd build development, not for question threads. Threads like this should be posted in thread you got the build from, or the Q&A/General section.

All good quality class2 sd cards also work with this build without problem!! But you could also try the others with class4 or class6. I think important thing is to test the cards with which cluster size they work best with this build. I have tested formatting different SD cards with 64kb, 32kb and 16kb cluster size. For me till now this build worked best with the 16kb cluster size. With 32kb and 64kb I had Lagg and freezes.
If you want to know how it worked best for me check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859817&page=502 post number #5016

ptoblems with your SD Card is mounted to read-only mode.
You can do follow this to fix error:
1) Plug your SD Card to your computer by card reader
2) Open 'My Computer'
3) Right Click on the drive you want to run scandisk on and click on Properties
4) In the Properties window select the 'Tools' tab.
5) In the Error-checking section click on 'Check now' button.
6) Select from the options to customize your scan and click on 'Start' to run the scandisk.
7) Insert your SD card to your phone and run android

Future WP7 Build Ideas

I hope Microsoft reads this, but I hope the developers can accomplish this, here are some ideas:
Have WP7 use internal memory for its main functions/rom, make the SD card available for programs, games, music, photos, videos etc...
This whole "making the sd as part of the phone" or striping data accros is way too sensitive. As I already experienced, this striping is very sensitive and the chain can easily be broken [as with a raid0(striping) storage system on a PC].
Also a ledgable partition to the os would be a plus (fat32, ntfs or even ext).
With this method the data on the sd card does not get lost each time the phone malfunctions/the storrage system gets disconected.
This is one of the major negative points with wp7, otherwise I really like it a lot, even for my business it just seems easier and better to navigat than wm 6.5.x.
What are other peoples thoughts??
Can the developer (if Microsoft refuses) accomlplish that???
P.s. Let me know ifmy threads are in the wrong Forum, but I thought both threads are valid ponts in regards to development and WP7 nand/rom issues.
OK, sorry for that, but I think maybe this one should be in the Q&A section??
If we get a future build that is
Usefull features
I do agree WP7 works great on HD2. There are some issues I would like to raise though:
1. I was unable to add custom TTF Fonts, like in WM6.5 to be able to read in Georgian.
2. Interactive USSD Feature does not work. That is, you can enable certain features that operator provides through *xxx# combination. I do not know if that works in original WP&, but in DFT release when the interactice menu comes up, the keyboard is locked, so there is no way to choose the desired option.
If anyone know answer to either issue please reply.
I dont think its a really big deal and it works the way they want it to, its almost like a hard drive that is built for the phone only. Microsoft will be releasing an updated WP7 that even includes the copy paste fuction. Maybe they can include the ability to send contacts, but since WP7 isnt open source I do not see any customization if much at all happening.
Except all the known issues, i'd like to have 2 improvement on the keyboard;
-Make the keyboard larger, there is some unused space on the right and left side of the keyboard.
-I'd like the keyboard to vibrate when buttons are pushed
i dont really think MS will see this
if you do want to give feedback find Windows phone on facebook or twitter where they have posted a short questionnaire and feedback box thats the place to do it
i dont really care about the SD card. Its one thing less to buy after you buy it. And this way you wont have any issues with damaging the card.
Windows Phone 7 wasnt designed for removable SD cards. It was intended for real internal storage though manufacturers went cheap for the first gen which is quite disappointing as if they used normal flash storage i think the performance would have been far better and the whole over blown deal with the SD card thing wouldn't have existed in the first place

I agree. 16gb of internal nand storage would be awesome and more reliable. An extra sd card would be cool also just so one can quickly copy/read pics and docs etc wihout having to install zune software.
ive been having quite a few major issues with WP7. its a shame because i do like it.
The main one being that every now and again it will restart by itself but sometimes it will do kind of a "hard reset" where everything goes back to factory settings, however if you restart it, it will go back to normal. i dont know if thats something to do with the SD card or something else??

This happened to me until I changed my SD card...
Well, I changed sd card and tried without. A full factory reset did the trick though. Seems like something weired is going on with the internal storage (I did a factory reset flashing from sd card).
My biggest concerns about wp7
1- No Copy and Paste
2- No fast multitask (like alt+tab)
3- No T9 dialpad
But the biggest is:
4- NO GOOGLE CONTACTS GOOD SYNC. Many of my contacts have multiple cellphones, and WP7 (also wm6.x) doesn't recognize them... Does anyone have an workaround?
5- Few medical apps (no Skyscape, Epocrates, or offline Uptodate...)
6- No apps folder...
Hope MS is watching this post!

[Q] AmeriCanDroid

Ok... I have been a member for awhile, reading this and that...
I have been using WM based phones ever since i could remember (minus a small sidekick phase). So, when I found out that WM7 wasnt avail for my HD2... I was quite upset.
I decided to take the plunge and try Android for my SD card. W O W!!!!
Very fast, & functionable. I have stayed away for installing roms and such because of their instability. But this is absolutely beautiful.
Now i haven't updated to the new release that came out this morning, and was wondering if i should because i have been having some small issues.
1. When running WM6.5 since the install, i have had a problem with messages updating on main screen, don't know if it is related or not.
2. This was a fresh install of WM6.5 along with an SD card format. I am not allowed to store any info on card anymore. It's a 16g card, and I don't like to waste space. I no longer have a place for my tunes..... not cool. Not to mention can't store pics, and all the movies I burned via DVDFab.
3. Now I have read that there is a way to 'partition' my SD card, but there are so many ways to do this. I would like to do this with the best way/program so i dont fry my card. Link to the most stable way of doing this would be appreciated.
4. Now as impressed with AmeriCanAndriod as I am.. I have a question about the lockscreen... It is NOT about it's size/fullscreen as i have read on here... But when i walk away and it appearantly locks itself, it goes BLACK. the buttons on the device still light up, but screen will not activate and i have to end up pulling the battery. I have read that this is not advisable since shutting down is where the OS saves it's data to the SD card itself.
Yes, I am as green as it comes to this, but I am not a complete fool. I do try and look up issues pertaining to my problems. I can strip a PC down and rebuild it again in minutes, but phones are new to my tinkering. I love my HD2, and love all the things I have read I can do with it.
I understand that the forced close issue has been rectified in the build released this morning. Can this be confirmed????
Also will I be able to save the data.img and restore my apps and settings i have installed if I want to update to the new release?
Partitioning the SD... Will it cause me to reformat card and have to re-install Andoid on phone?
LASTLY..... Thank You to the AmeriCanAndroid Tean for making a beautiful OS that can easily be installed. Having a dual boot system is perfect for me. All the power and funtionabilty of WM & all the fun of Android. You couldn't ask for more. All the talent in this OS truly shows in this streamless, beautiful, user friendly system.

First off, this is not the place where to post. You should post in the builds own thread located here. Second i know that black screen happens to me as well but what i do is leave it for about 3 min on standby and its cleared up by then. Make sure to have the latest build from the thread mentioned above. And yes you will be able to keep the same data.img from the previous release unless specified. Partition yes you will format but simply drag and your Android folder to your desktop and once you're done drag it back in simple.
Thank You for the reply. I was going to post in the AmeriCanAndroid thread, but since this is my first post. I had a popup tell me I had to post HERE, instead of that thread until I reach 10 posts.
If a Moderator wishes to move this, I have no problems with that. I wanted to post where it was most relevant in the first place. I just want to be able to reply without the 'newbe' restrictions.
Relieved that I can save my things, by saving the data.img file.
Partitioning, would love a link to the best/safest method.
Blackscreen.. So I just hit a button and leave it for awhile? That's not very practical if I had a buisness call to make, or an emergency. Is there a workaround? Can I shut off the Auto Lock?
What folder do I add music, ringtones, movies and other goodies to? Can WM 7 Android share these same files? (as long as they're not OS specific obviously)
Ah, i see your reasoning, no problem. A good guide on partitioning that i used as well can be found here. And well there inst really a fix to the black screen problem and i haven't searched for one since it only happens on boot of Android. What seems to make it come back faster for me is locking and unlocking the phone quickly. And you can just place a folder and name it anything you want on the root of the SD card. Heck you can put all your mp3,photos,documents on the root of the SD card and Android will still pick them up, it doesn't matter. And when you say "Share" do you mean Bluetooth sending? Then yes, you can.
Nope... SD card will not let me install anything while i was hook to puter. I was running WM at the time, not android. That shouldn't have been a problem. I am about to hook SD card directly to copmuter itself and copy files that way.
I have had all music located on card before this install, nicely organized by artist or genre, along with my movies, pics, etc. But wont allow me to do this now. I am little confused about that, unless android locked SD/root to android application only. Since most programs that lock things usually prompt you for user allowances, which i did not see, i am ruling that out as an option. Phones and computers are very similar as i am finding out.
The blackscreen doesn't occur on Droid boot... It happens when it sleeps, hibernates, or whatever you call it. Can not wake it from this state.
The Data.img.... Do i put that in after i update and run android, or do i put it in the very begining when i copy droid folder to SD card?
Thanx
~Bdwlf2~
Yup, android put a 'write protect' on SD card. Trying some format tools now. Had to put a re-partiton on it to get rid of protection, which made it a Bad Disk. So trying a recovery on it now. I refuse to be beatin by an object smaller than my thumbnail. Arrrgh!
Android does not lock the SD card to application only, that's very odd that you cant copy files to the SD card. Maybe its a setting on your computer that wont allow you? And about the black screen problem, there seems to be no one reporting about that on the thread as far i can see. Are you running SetCPU or a Task Killer by any chance? Those make Android behave very odd. If not i would suggest downloading the latest build again and formatting your SD Card and putting Android on it again. You can also move your stuff your desktop and put it back again. About the Data.img, you don't really need to move it anywhere. When there is a new update to the build, i simply extract the contents of the new build to the Android folder on my SD card and over write. Simplest method I've seen yet.

That seems very odd. I've been using this build since February 24th and it has never locked up like that. But nonetheless you found a fix, good work.
No, not running any of those programs. I have extensively swapped data with this card numerous times.
I checked all setting in android prior to putting into puter. In therory, android should NOT write protect the disk, but something did. I have read this happening to others just in XDA forums alone.
Just got disk back to the "good" state using MiniTool Power Data Recovery... Let's take a peek as to see if it works correctly now.
Hmmmm... I think I should have used, repair damage partiton after recovery... still not working.
***scratches head***
I may need another cup of coffee for this.
How about a simple reformat?

Nope. Tried that.
Windows formatter - no
SD formatter - no
Mini tool -nada
MyDefrag - not
Test disk - running now... pending
Try to reformat the SD from Windows Mobile?
Yup, first option....
Would go partially thru it, then stop. Worked fine yesterday. This starting to become un-nerving.
I will find a way. There is always a way. Unless something shorts/melts/breaks/ or fry's... there is always a way. Just a matter of correct knowedge and tool combination.

Trying HDD Regenerator v2011
Seems to be doing something, using limited Demo mode. At least it is identifying the bad sectors.
This one is gonna take awhile. If it works, or i find something that does, I will post. I've read other's have had this problem, and I can save the person buying/tossing out cards.... Then the work is worth it.
57min into it and only scanned 11mb????? This may be a month to scan 16g. If my math is correct. That's 1gig (1000mb) / 11per hour = 90.90hrs to complete 1g of scanning, multiplied by 15 (usable gigs) = 1363.6363hrs or 51.81 days? 51 days to complete scan?!?!?!?! Gonna look for another program. Wow.
Good thing I have a small 2g card. Unfortunately it won't hold 1/2 of my music. Argh, and I just put a 2 HD movies on there.
If you want to partition or format your SD you HAVE to be in Windows Mobile.
Also, if you are repartitioning your SD, I recommend you recreate your data.img or else it will have issues.
I tried to format in WM... Fail. All the files reappeared.
I did notice .android_secure file. That wasn't there before.
I have unmounted, seems like it is remounting itself. I even unmounted and yanked battery immediately. No success.
Yes, Android still boots.... Something in there is locking card. If card was bad, Android would obviously not be booting.
I cant add or remove data from that card. I have tried several programs.
**** Edit****
Please Do Not ask if switch on adapted is locked, I have two adapters, both UNLOCKED... For some reason, my "Spidey Senses" are telling me that I am about to be asked that question. Being asked this will only cause me to "sigh" loudly before i bang my head on desk. Which will still leave me with locked card and now a fresh migrane.

WP7 vs Android

Just for opinions really ...
So Which is best WP7 or Android on hd2,
Would say WM6.5 but I hate it!

i would prefer the android ROM, especially GB. smooth and fast for daily use.
coz i have got experience with W7..there's so much lock app or sometimes app/gall is locked too..
but, it's depend on what you need of course..
I was jumping between Nodo and Gingerbread for over a month, as soon as I installed one I missed the other. Then Mango came out and I could no longer decide, so had them both. Now I have Mango and Ice Cream Sandwich. I am still not sure what I would keep if given a choice of only one.
My biggest bug with WP7.5 was inability to transfer .pdf files to be used with Acrobat reader. You could get the reader, but when it came to files it was a whole different scenario, as Zune transfers only media and photos, so there were suggestions of drop box, e-mailing yourself (yeah, the entire library), etc. Now there is a program that gets your files (I believe any files) loaded through USB and my WP7.5 is a lot more useful.
Android is a lot more democratic when playing videos. Full stop. Zune is too finicky with what it wants to play and the whole connect and synchronise routine can't win against the simplicity of plug and drop. So I have 65 movies on my Android and none on my Mango. Mango, however, has my entire collection of family photos from 2002 - all sorted by dates and readily available, my Facebook albums, my friends' albums and whatever else I might need to keep up with anyone I care about.
Mango takes better HD videos and I enjoy just sharing photos on Facebook, including tags and updates. Android allows you to use any tune as a ringtone, the procedure for WP7 is hellish nightmare for uninitiated.
I liked Mango's Zune player, so got it installed on Android, I liked WP7 keyboard with its uncanny word accuracy and prediction - same thing (in fact, after trying a whole lot of keyboards, I think none beats the one that came with WP7, not even in the same league). Even Metro messaging UI was ported over.
Social networking integration, however, places Mango way ahead of Android. The whole concept of People Hub, Pictures, Calendar, Me etc - perfect. And is the biggest reason I like Mango so much.
As far as games and apps - I like Sam, the Personal Assistant. It's similar to Iphone's Siri and I wish WP7 could get one just like it. Navigation, Google Goggles, Places etc - Android, games - Mango. Otherwise apps are more or less evenly spread, depending on your needs, of course. Other e-book format and readers - definitely Android, music - Mango. Zune got all my albums properly arranged, the album art was readily available and all the information was added perfectly well.
I never experienced any problems with Mango, but I did have occasional freezes and mishaps with Android. But then again, I am running Android off SD, the ICS is still in development, so it would be unfair to say Android is to blame.
I guess I got you even more confused now than when you started What I am trying to say is both are great, Android is perhaps a bit more versatile at the moment, but WP7 is catching up fast. Can't wait to see the next incarnation.
I would agree that Mango seems more stable as I was just out and about this evening trying the ICS-4.0.3-CM9-build15 I installed on my HD2 recently but I must admit it did hang and freeze on numerous occasions. I was taking loads of pics of Plymouth harbour and the gallery froze and had to be shutdown then Google maps blacked the screen which was annoying cos I was using it to find my way back to the bus! What was more annoying was that I didn't have the other sd card that I use when booting WP7.5!!
On that subject, any of you guys running HD2O_WP7_1.26_LEO71_8107_ WP7.5 off NAND with ICS-4.0.3-CM9-build15 using the same SD card? I have tried everything to get this to work but everytime I have gone through the procedure, easeus partition etc etc everything boots fine BUT Android says 'please install an SD card' it can't somehow read the SD card which it has just booted off!! The only way I can get the ICS to work is if I use a separate SD which I have formatted using sdformatter.
Pity cos I would love to have both on the phone at the same time without having to change the SD.

My guess would be your card is to blame. Although I am running BTTF + Tytung's latest ICS 1.4. Went through 3 cards with 2 just dying within 2 weeks of operation and constant problems with either WP7.5 or Android not booting, restarting etc. Finally I went with San Disk and the problems magically disappeared.
I never go through Easeus partitioning because BTTF provides storage unlock and partitioning .cab, I just unlocked, partitioned to have 10Gb for Mango and 20Gb for ICS, never looked back.
Windows phone 7 is smoother, but of course has less going on in the background, and also has better social network integration, while Android has the overwhelming edge when it comes to apps, but that users would likely be happy with either on their HTC HD2.
But I think Android is the best phone OS going right now.....
just android
I would move to WP7, if only the battery drain problem would be properly fixed.
Since that's not happening, I have a nice and smooth GB rom on my HD2 as a daily driver.

What are u using in place of Easeus? I thought the WP7 had to be larger according the video on Pdaimatejam ROM. Are you partitioning before you install the ROM? Maybe you can send a link to the forum your reading
maybe this
I think what she's does is she installs WP7 first then unlocks the sd card (this there's a tut here somewhere) then she partitions the unlocked sd card for android
lets have enigma1nz confirm this

Adoptable Storage guide

For those that are interested:
https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3z1bfi/enable_adoptable_storage_on_your_lg_g4_stock_no/
This does work on our phone. Keep in mind that it will FORMAT your sd card so back it up first. This isn't my info and its mentioned in another thread in the international S7 forum (on my phone so I'll update with a link since its buried in a thread). So thank those that did the actual work.
PSA: if you have a slow sd card I don't recommend this. Class 10 should be fine but UHS*x* is best.
Edit: Here's the thread in the International S7 forum
Also there's a post in there saying we should replace "private" with "mixed". This is the post in that thread regarding it.

I don't know. I have no need to expand my internal storage right now so I haven't tried it. I just posted it up for everyone here in case anyone needed it. Maybe it will calm a few people down out there who are upset that adoptable storage wasn't "included" even though it was originally going to be.
Thanks a lot for this great work. FYI, when I did this, I couldn't get Google Music to download to the SD card. I guess it downloads to internal storage first, and when the SD card is not adopted storage, Google Music sees that it's there. But when it is adopted storage, it doesn't - which I imagine is as expected. So it pushed the music to primary storage. I imagine the workaround is to use a 50/50 split or something, and then the SD card will still show up.
One last thing needed
Go into sd card and select migrate
works great! did this w/ my new 128 GB sandisk. i was a little confused as to why my storage was already full, but that was b/c I never did the migrate step. The system doesn't see storage correctly, but a small price to pay for adoptable storage...now I just wish it didn't take a day and a half to transfer to/from the damn thing

At what stage do you do this migrate step? Is it after the whole process is done?
Thanks!
Yes at the end

Keep in mind I haven't done this to the s7 as right now I intend on swapping for the HTC 10 but I did do it to the HTC m8
