[Q] Bought a used dexter modded Elocity A7 and having issues - A7 General

I am pretty tech savy with Windows but this is my first Android device. My device states:
Model number: A7-040
Firmware version: 2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected]#1
Serial number: 2638016300029
Build number: Dexter's ElocityA7 Mod v1.42
EC version: 0.14
1st issue: Cannot read my 8Gb Centon Pro USB thumb drive (could be because it's formatted using exFat instead of FAT32) Status of thumb drive remains "checking for errors" underneath "Preparing external storage"
2nd issue: Superuser app has been installed and every once in a while pops up and states that some unknown app is asking for some kind of permission
3rd issue: Factory restore (settings>privacy>Factory data reset) does not seem to reset anything (downloaded apps, wifi keys and ssids, desktop shortcuts all remain afterward)
4th issue: System update does not seem to work (states that "update.zip" is missing).
And why does the kernal version have what seems to be someone's email address on it?
I need to know if the info in "About device" seems right or if I need patches or additional mods or updates. Or maybe I need to know how to reset this thing to complete factory settings (factory ROM).

1. To read exFAT kernel must have library supporting exFAT. Have to advice - format your USB thumb drive to FAT
4. System updates do not work at custom ROM, may be Dexter turned it off to prevent erasing all custom modifications.

2. kinda scary if an app you can't identify is getting su permissions.
3. Maybe related to 5[Strogino]'s answer for #4
The random su access woul scare the crap out of me, I'd download a new rom and start from scratch.
For the factory reset and updates, I have always taken care of those tasks in recovery, never from inside the rom.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I appreciate your time. So I guess exFat is not supported. I'll try and figure out the rest for myself.

1. android has no exFAT support, even if i included it with the custom kernel.
2. alway just re-install a clean 1.42 mod and do a factory reset in recovery menu, then you are 100% its safe.
3. custom rom issue, never gonna work.
4. same as 3.
and with a customer kernel the compiled date + hostname + user will always be embedded according to custom kernel and linux revision standard in the linux code. you cannot get around that, except if you remove it the code.
factory reset (press POWER ON for 1sec and release, again press and HOLD POWER until screen says loading recovery, you will see info on screen saying hold 5 seconds to boot recovery)
press "HOME" to see menu in recovery otherwise you just see "!" sign.

[Q] Updating help

Hello all.
I have an issue that I can't find on the forums...I'm totally confused.
My brand new (3 day old from Target) Iconia Tab 500 keeps saying there is a system update ready. A dialog box pops up saying it's ready & do I want to download now or wait.
If I click "now" it looks like it's downloading. There is a little status bar on the bottom right of the screen that says it's downloading & the yellow bar moves along at a decent pace.
I think it finishes downloading....because that status bar disappears.
Then nothing happens. I expected a "run update" type of window to appear, but it never does.
So if I click through to the "about" area & click "check for system updates"....and for about 1/2 of a second I see the spinning wheel icon that looks like it's contacting the Acer servers to check for any updates...but that disappears & it says "no updates currently available".
So I go on about my business.
Then seemingly at some random interval I get another "system update ready - do you want to download now or later". Of course if I click "now" the same thing happens....nothing.
I thought maybe i had downloaded it & now i have to install manually, but I can't see any file named "update" anywhere...particularly not in the "downloads" folder.
This has happened maybe 5 or 6 times over the past 3 days.
I'm totally confused. Can somebody help me please?
In the About Info it says:
Android: 3.01
Kernal Version: 2.6.36.3-00001-G9B3CE2B
Build: Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1
FYI - I have not rooted this because #1 I have never done that before & am hesitant to screw it up & #2 I have 87 days left on my 90 day Target return policy & I don't want to do anything that's gonna screw that up in case I decide this tablet isn't really for me.
Thanks all !!
GMP
Same thing for me
I'm also having the same problem.
I've tried downloading the OTA update. The progress bar fills all the way up, gets to the end... then nothing. No button for "install now".
I've tried downloading 4 times, both with and without the sd card installed. I've even let it sit in this state for 15-20 minutes. It just hangs...and hangs....and hangs.
Android Version: 3.0.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3
Build #: Acer_A500_1.141.07_COM_GEN1
Also, unrooted.
more info
Hmmmm - ok...additional info for me. I do NOT have any SD card inserted. I just decided to not buy one with the unit because I thought i had a few extra at home, but I didn't - & I haven't been back to the store to get one yet.
I wonder if that makes a difference for my situation?
I will get a card & try again asap & post a reply.
Thanks,
GMP

I can't imagine having an SD card installed would be a requirement for the update. The card is a piece of optional equipment.
The only reason I tried with and without was that I saw some people were having some install issues that were solve by removing the card. But I think this was more an issue with rooted devices.
Trying anything at this point.
thanks
Makes sense.
Hopefully somebody will help us.
Thanks.

I've got a few days left of "returnability" on this tablet. If I can't get this solved in a reasonable amount of time...buh-bye. May ditch in favor of the Toshiba.
Working! (i think)
I think I've got it working. I reset my device first (paperclip, pinhole...reboot).
Re-downloaded the update. Hurray - got a "install now" message. It's unzipping and installing right now.
Stand by for an update....
Success!!!
That worked. So, try resetting your tab with a paperclip.

yay / boo
Yay for you!!
Boo for me....please don't tell me I have to factory reset just to do an update?
There must be another way??

I didn't do a factory reset. It's just a "regular" reset. Not sure what the difference is between with sort of reset and simply running a power-cycle (except that the reset worked and power cycling didn't).
When I paper-clipped my Iconia (from power on), it simply shut down. When it booted back up, it was stil my machine with all my data and software.
ok - thanks!
Oh...ok - that makes sense - I'll try that.
Thanks!

Cool. In retrospect, I think there may have been something waiting in the install queue that I couldn't see. The reset may have cleared it out.
Cheers.
in fatc what might have happend to you is that the paperclip thing looked if there is an update.zip in the cache, and if it finds one, it does the update.
you can also check in doing volume- power.
if you don't have cwm or any kernel installed.

Introduction... and a soft key issue

Hello, I will be the first to admit I'm pretty much a noob at android, and have recently performed the ultimate noob mistake, trying to customize the phone and root it. I've had to perform some odin flashes, etc. but may have done more damage there.
My current situation is as follows:
1) Phone boots and gets to android, I'm on the "EC07-Clean rom+rooted+bebinged+deodex+minor debloat" Right now, with, (hopefully) the Red CWM still functional.
2) I do not actually have phone service for this phone. People sometimes get rid of tech stuff for newer models, and give the old ones to me (In exchange for tech advice relating to computers). So I am really trying to use this like a palm pilot replacement.
My issue is this:
After restoring everything seems to be working perfectly, I can get on my wifi, download stuff. from the market and amazon. And all 4 soft keys work fine.
However after rebooting the phone once, shortly after startup, (like 2 seconds in ) the home and menu keys stop working.
Things I have tried:
In CWM, I have test all the buttons and they show up as giving a return number.
If I reflash another image they work fine again, until I power off the phone and turn it on again.
Possible causes:
I was panicking at one point while using Odin, something I do not recommend doing ever. And I didn't un-check the no re-partition option, I probably started a flash using phone and not PDA, then closed the program. Again, panic bad.
Is there a version of Odin I can use that will use all in one packages? (the 1.3 version I get linked to from this forum doesn't have an 'all in one' option like release 4 versions, which do not seem to support this phone by name.
Here are my phone stats:
Hardware: I400.0.6
Model Number: SCH-I400
Firmware 2.2.2
Baseband: S:i400.0.6V.EC06
Kernal: 2.6.43.9
Build number: SCH-I400.EC07

If the only issue you are running into is corrupted softkeys, i would 1. Count your blessings.
2. Download trailblazer softkeys theme, and run your framework red through it. Under extras choose softkeys mapping, and select original mappings. Then create the package and flash it in cwm. The themer is pretty self explanatory.
I am not a fly, i am levitation. I represent an entire generation. - Niki Minaj
If that doesn't work, i would suggest reflashing the kernel.
I've been lurking in the forums for a few months now loading the ROM's that several peeps have been working on. The only ODIN I've seen mentioned is vs. 1.3 or 1.85. Everyone's directions are very explicit and if you follow them it's pretty simple to do.
When loading a new image you need to do it using the PDA button, NOT phone, also as you've experienced, leave the re-partition button unchecked. You probably need to redo the partitions which requires a .pit file.
Check out Trailblazer's post in this forum for fixing, it's pretty detailed. And from what I've been reading, Trailblazer, ciscogee, Joshkoss, and pattielip seem to be the starts around here. Check out all their posts. You'll learn a TON in a short amount of time.
I have been learning a lot, thats how I got out of bricked, TX hooked me up with another flash, and things have been going better definately. If I have issues again I'll probably look for the repartition instructions with a PIT file. Once I got past the panic I did a lot of reading.
I'm having the exact same issue as OP. I also am using the phone as wifi only and I also panicked during my initial ODIN and may have let partition get flashed, though I'm not convinced that it is related at this point.
My CWM 2.5 red reports the keys work, and I notice that as soon as Verizion prompts me to select a language and then activate the phone, that is when the softkey home menu search stop working.
I'm trying a few different roms, to see if one may have the activation disabled. Hopefully that will resolve the issue.
--Update with solution--
I finally found the item that was killing the softkeys. I used Rom Toolbox's Auto Start Manager to disable "Setup Wizard" and now I can use any rom. This phone is really awesome!
I was going to say that all I had to do was Odin flash again the deodexed EC07 and everything was good to go. Just always make sure your Odin settings are right before you click that button, otherwise, bad juju. I am sorry it took so long to get back to you.

[Q] Can't connect to the internet (3g symbol doesn't show up either)

Hi I've searched for many hours for a solution so I've finally decided to post a query on XDA.
As you all know, the Samsung Galaxy Y has a small internal memory - in a bid to expand it I did the following:
1. Rooted my phone using an update.zip file - this created superuser on my phone.
2. Using CWM Recovery I made a partition with 512MB
3. I installed the Link2SD app.
4. Upon opening the app I chose "ext3" to link the internal memory with. This caused my phone to reboot.
5. Upon reboot, I found that the SD card memory (supposedly 2GB) had reduced to 1.35GB which was lower than expected.
6. Wanting to un-partition, I used CWM Recovery to format all parts i.e. /cache, /data, /system etc.
7. The phone did not boot up despite waiting hours...
8. I used Odin mode to flash a stock rom which did not finish correctly despite trying several times, however when I detached my phone from the USB, I was able to boot it up and start it normally.
9. After booting it up, no apps would install despite many different methods trying to install them.
10. I launched into the standard recovery mode and did factory reset.
11. Now the phone functions normally except for two things that I've noticed:
- I can't perform a software update for my phone, the 0.38mb file downloads and as it is installing (before booting up), it reaches 22% and then the phone starts and gives the message "failed to update firmware" or something of the sorts. Also in Samsung Kies, I get the message "GT S5360 does not support initialising" when trying to update.
- Even with the packet data on, I don't get a 3G symbol at the top of my phone and I can't connect to the internet. This is the major issue in this post.
Apologies for the long post, but I've done a heck of things so I wanted to include all information. If there's any god amongst you guys who can help me then I will be very grateful.
P.S. I live in the UK and I am on TalkMobile!
I am idiot - ignore this.

[Q] i9506 Post-Flashing Screen Deaths

Hi all, I own an i9506 and I recently flashed a 4.4.2 rom to it (currently using a 4.3 stock from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597058). The procedure of this flashing went roughly as follows:
1) Entered into Philz recovery, did the wipe required to flash a new rom (the option which specifically stated this). Cleared all the cache partitions, dalvik cache etc.
2) flashed the new rom, flashed gapps. Of all the KitKat roms available on the i9506 dev board, I've tried Buda's SPL Gaming Rom and solk2's CM11 Rom.
3) Reboot.
Upon startup, I completed the usual logging into Google accounts, cyanogen accounts, time/date settings, before the play store automatically began downloading all of my apps. After all the apps were downloaded smoothly, I turned the screen off. But it never turned back on again, though the two bottom buttons beside the home button light up when the home button was pressed. Having no other choice, I pulled the battery and turned the phone back on. This time, the moment the bootloader animation finished, I got a systemui crash error, which kept reappearing every time I clicked OK to dismiss it, rendering the phone totally useless. I've also tried going straight into a reboot after loading my apps (so no turning off the screen and battery pulling), but it still boots into that systemui crash loop.
Here's what my phone is running on now:
Baseband Version: I9506XXUAMHD
Kernel Version: 3.4.0 [email protected] #1 Sat July 5 16:42:37 CEST 2014
Build Number: JSS15J.I9506XXUBNE1
SE for Android Status: Permissive
In summary;
- after flashing a new rom, everything works fine before rebooting/turning off the screen
- Titanium Backup doesn't come into play here
- Dirty Flashing only makes the new rom hang at the bootloader animation
- no, I can't post on the original thread where I got the ROMs, cuz apparently I'm too noob, and the creators don't answer to PMs.
So my questions are:
1) is this FIXABLE?
2) has this happened to anyone else who's running a similar setup?
3) am I doomed to never enjoy Android 4.4??

Hi mate ,
I do not own a I9506 but what i would do is:
1 did you try a factory reset from recovery
2 Factory reset clear dalvick and cache , flash rom full wipe again
3 If everything fail , flash stock rom with Odin and start again......
Only restore data app with TB , do not restore system data only do it if is the same rom , if is a different rom from a different dev it may give you problems

Seicane S305690G, boots twice, how to change bootanimation

Hello,
I recently installed my headunit from seicane (seicane S305690G) , but I noticed that sometimes the unit has to boot up twice.
First time it boots, it goes asfar as "android is starting up .." and immediatly after that the system reboots, again, second boot has always worked so far.
Any idea if doing a master reset to factory settings could fix this? and what exactly happens when i do a factory reset, my headunit currently works on oreo 8.1 wich i'm not really fond of, will a factory reset or undo all things seicane has installed? i have the feeling the OS isnt all that stable, the headunit also takes an entire minute to boot, idk but that seems a bit long no?
Another thing I would want to do is change the bootanimation, there was already a standard app on the unit called bootanimation that i can't remove/uninstall, after some digging i found the bootanimations app where you can download other bootanimations, but for this to work i need to be able to write to system/media folder wich i have no acces for , any idea's on how to overcome this, preferably without rooting, if i need to root it i'd preferably install a diffrent Firmware like android 7.X if that's possible and compatible with my unit offcourse...
tablet specs:

Question 1: The unit checks on startup whther new programs have been installed and does an optimization step building the dalvik cache for that new application. One of those applications is corrupt, broken, whatever. It crashes the process and your unit restarts. The second boot either skips the apk or now it is going correct. so check what you have installed as 3rd party apps and install/deinstall one by one to find the culprit. And on reinstall it might work correctly as something might have gone wrong during first install or later upgrade.
Question 2: You can only do this via adb, either adb over usb, or adb over tcpip. Please do some googling otherwise this will be a very lengthy explanation which others probably already did better.

Thank you for your response surfer63, very interesting indeed seems to be the case here, i'll try to take it into account, i havent seen this happening yet but i havent installed any new apps yet aswell.
I will certainly look into it, but will the adb over usb method work without rooting the device?
Maybe you know how i can enter recovery mode on my headunit, havent tried the reset button yet, but i figure it is needed, i tried all other key combo's but nothing worked so far (capacitive buttons). If i press the reset mini button on my unit what exactly will happen, will it do a factory reset or does that need some extra actions?
I have searched youtube and google but can't seem to find my headunit and there are lots of diffrent methods to get into it with no physical buttons, maybe you know the most used method for these kind of things? Haven't tried anything yet with the reset button though, but i wanna know what it does exactly before i start fidling around with that button.
