Samsung Galaxy II update to increase the size of icons

Even if Samsung were stupid enough to actually do this (and they aren't), you could just use an alternative boot loader (which most of us do anyway).

If you're on this forum, and still using a stock Samsung firmware, then what's wrong with you?

Number of rows on the homescreen is not hard to change, i am sure there will be a mod out within days to change it.
There will also be alternative launchers, tw4.5 etc.

I like it. Shrug. Big icons is some of the reasons people use MIUI in the first place.

OMG! They are giving us the option to have larger icons!! How crazy is that? People with bad eyes shouldn't be using smartphones!!!!!!!!

The first article says the large icon size is optional. Nothing to see here people

I myself dont use Kies as to me its a big load of crap although sometimes I do like to try officially released firmwares just to see what they bring and then after a week flash back to XDA firmwares. What hacks me off is that things can get to this stage with the bull between companies.People that dont flash for what ever reason, and thats fine as no-one is forced to flash their phone, are gonna be screwed.Im pissed for them, not so much for myself but for the people that will be affected.I myself will be sticking to XDA as always but come on...

Take it from me, the change is going to be an option.

use custom firmware and launcher from market. Problem solved.

Rather, a default, right?

Maybe its a good thing cos my grandad needs a new phone anyway and the bigger icons will be just what he needs. Now i know what Im gonna get him for xmas

Optional or not. If disliked there are multiple launchers on the market to replace the factory one..beauty of Android.

LCD Density Changer and ADW Launcher is all you need.

Just change the DPI of your screen. 240 is WAYY too high for such a big beautiful screen. It's like running 800x600 on a 24" 1080P monitor. 190 is a lot nicer and more crisp. You can use Rom Toolbox from the market to achieve this. Root required.

Loving My 2.2 Streak

I am really loving this upgrade and for the first time I am considering putting away my iphone and using ONLY the Streak. Being I have 2 phone numbers and everyone knows the number on my iphone, I will forward those calls to the Streak and when I want to go lite, I will UN-forward and carry the iphone ..
I have the Mugen extended and got several days out of the battery. Something in 2.2 is sucking the battery life, I will have to go 'vampire hunting' but in the meanwhile .. I would call it a blessing to get 24 hours out of the Mugen. Nothing worse that having carry charging accessories everywhere you. I usually end up forgetting my charger somewhere ..
I also like the new mail program. It checks gmail and hotmail besides checking pop accounts.
RAMBLE-RAMBLE .. I don't know if I like the "launcher." I forget what it is called. Will probably use ADW unless I can get used to Dells. I can't figure out how to get it back now that I made ADW default .. Anyone know how ??
Is everyone happy like I am? Mostly it was a big relief because I always wondered if the Betas would get updates, after all .. we are Dell's Redheaded Step Children .. No support .. No warranty ..
To get the launcher go to settings > applications > manae applications. Go to adw launcher and click clear defaults. Also do the same for dell launcher. Now when you press home it will ask you what launcher to use.

GREAT and THANK YOU ..
Having a hard time trying to edit those pages ... For example the contacts page/menu .. How do I remove one? Or how do I stop it from checking the weather. I see how to add things, but removing ?? Can't do it ..
I found in "accessibility" you can set your power button to hang up the phone. LOVE THAT !!! For me, nothing is more frustrating than not being able to hang up the phone IMMEDIATELY .. You know .. talking to your boyfriend when your husband sneaks up on you .. Just kidding !!!

I prefer to just look out the window or step outside. I am in Florida and hot or cold it is ALWAYS humid with a chance of rain !!
I love my Streak with 2.2! Not sure about the Stage yet. I think I will mostly use the LauncherPro (I like the way it looks/runs better than ADW.Launcher). Also, I recommend installing the Home Switcher to easily go back and forth between different launchers.
I can't remember if I ever tried LauncherPro and don't think I ever knew about Launcher Switcher . Thanks.
Anyone having problems with their Streak shutting off since the upgrade? I am and I don't think it is a battery door thing. I will check again though.
Did you by chance do a factory reset right after the upgrade? I did and I haven't had any shutdown issues so far.
Sorry to ask, just a few steps above android newbie, how do I do a reset ?? Is it in Settings? I forget ..

Screenshots please
Hi fellow Streakers. I haven't been able to update, but would like to see a ton of screenshots. Just so I can see how good everything is. Has text message word size changed any?
I really should have just reset on my own because I noticed lots of apps running all the time and battery usage was A LOT .. I just hate adding things again like email accounts blah blah blah .. But a clean system is a happy system.

Sounds like Fishing for an OMG to me (The Club)
can you guys show side by side screen shots of the launchers? I don't mind the stage. All I did was delete the widgets that come up on default, like Dell's mouthpiece Amy-B suggested. For those that don't know, I took the link to 0100, manually entered it into my streak, it did the download, and started the install. Once it did, had a hard time with some of the previous settings putting me into a boot loop/force close with the google calendar so I did a factory reset and all was good. The dell backup tool helped a lot with my previous apps, but I have noticed a lot of force closes, but I believe that's due to versions of apps that were specific to 1.6.
oh and here's a bit of funny. On Dell's community forum, I made a suggestion that I should talk to all the streakers I know and see if there is a class action suit to be had here, and they deleted my post and sent me a "we removed your post for yada yada yada language and violation of terms". I got my morning laugh over that one!

[Q]Worth rooting?

Hi, have had much fun with my rooted HTC Sensation, and I've this great Samasung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but is worth it to root my tab? Waiting for ICS to come for 7.7...
Yes it is because you can install titanium backup to back up all your apps and CWM to install different mods and more importantly back up your entire tab. Since you already have the experience you already know the benefits of it.

On top of the normal reasons to root your Android device, root apps and what Adinis78 mentioned, the number one reason to do it on the 7.7 is the mod to keep your launcher in memory instead of always having to load icons/widgets when returning home. I almost returned the thing before finding Jade Eyed Wolf's instructions.

Until Samsung releases an update with a fix, or app devs change the way that apps address the external SD card on the 7.7, rooting and editing the platform file is the only way that any installed apps can write to your external SD card. It's annoying to have to hack the device to get it to work correctly, but there we are.
one to choose?

I wouldn't worry about roms right now unless you are a power user since ICS is probably going to come out soon. but here some general reasons for rooting that I know of:
-Keep launcher in memory (so homescreen icons and widgets don't lag upon reload)
-To apply a theme to the notification bar at the bottom
-HoneyBar/HideBar to get true full-screen (my main reason)...This is arguably the most important reason to root since AMOLED screens have a tendency to burn-in. with your clock and controls there ALL the time, it's very possible that prolonged use at high brightness will burn it in. it happened to my first Samsung Vibrant within a couple of months
-Chainfire to get access to tegra games
-Ad Free to get rid of all in-app ads
-Back-up/restore for apps
if you care about any of these, rooting is super easy....if not, then dont worry about it

I don't think so, usually the browser has a built-in ad block algorithm. The ad block generally only blocks Google ads.
As long as you make a note of your official firmware, screen shoot perhaps, you can flash it back using Odin to get rid of root. Download it all now just in case the links stop working and to make sure it's actually available.

If that's the only reason you need the lock screen password then yes I can confirm once again that it works. Just follow the thread.
Another option is to use WidgetLocker. Then you would have the lockscreen Dashclock and a customizable unlock slider, and then a password/pattern lock screen afterwards. This is what my wife uses, and it works well.

Yea really and I did read what I wrote. We're talking about how to fix a $600 phone to make it work BETTER. Of course its notbon the same level as curing cancer or world hunger. From what I've read in your post your always right. Bud just because someone else wants to mess with their phone when they have to Odin to fix it, or they are looking for a solution to a problem you feel is unimportant does not mean they are less then you. Some of us want to make our phones as good as they can be FOR US. This is what this whole site is about. DEVELOPING ways to IMPROVE our phones. Improvement for ke may mean nothing for you but still it deserves a place here. This site is not KryptosXLayer2-development.com.

Everyone has their issues in life. Mine are fairly minor. I'm just not big on stopping progress just because I feel the immediate effects are useless. To me the end result could be something amazing. This might end up inspiring someone to get AOSP lockscreen working, or even someone to learn to code etc. Basically I see it as an opportunity. I took your comment the same way I take people who dont want to research basic science or ways to save certain animals from extinction etc because they dont see the immediate point. Of course this is much less important but the thought process seemed the same "I wont benifit in the next few days, who cares". I try to allow my mind to stay open, and to see opportunities were ever they appear. I dont honestly think 5 threads about bootloaders aee needed or the AdamOutler's thread is needed yet (I personally would have waited until Dan released his hack to expect the theead to stay on topic since so many people laced so much hope on Dan that theybare foing to talk about it every were they can.) But I dont go around telling these people they are wrong and their issues unimportant. I let the threads be and check in from time to time to see if anything meaningful has occured. Maybe it's just the American in me be I perfer to let people have their important issues and help those I can and those I agree with while not bothering those whom I can't help or those whom I don't agree with.

few mods for stock rom

So yes, i,ve stated it in the title.
I'm using Frosty Jelly bean from past 2 weeks.
and trust me by far the BEST STOCK ROM ever you can even think of.
it is way toooooo quick and smooth.
After the first update, i,ve requested the dev to add few tweaks for the the update but Unfortunately, the dev thinks that no one, else than me and him using his rom.
And he has kinda abandoned the work.
So the reason why i am writing this post is to ask you guys that is there any way that i can add these few mods to that rom without an update from the dev's side.
1- enter instead of smiley face in keyboard
2- navigation bar customization
P.s i,ve already searched the forum :$ but couldn't find any thing similar to what i'm asking for here :$
Else trust me guys the ROM is way more quicker than the STOCK it self.

OK here's what you do buy swift key that will fix the keyboard to what you want
Search play store for nav bar customization it's for root phones and only cost. 99 cents but allows you to change size and things like that. No reason for the developer to add these things if you can with out any coding

I know installing applications will keep it stock but you know things implemented by default play safe role in the smoothness of the rom :/

1 - If I'm not mistaken the enter key is a .png inside /system/app/systemui.apk or /system/framework/framework-res.apk. Replace the png with whatever you want.
2 - Get frosty's source code, compile it and make sure it runs first. Next, get AOKP's github and cherry pick their navigation bar changes. Rebuilt, and see if it runs
Also, it's NOT A STOCK ROM anymore. It's still considered a custom rom. It DID NOT SHIP with the phone.
Well in this case it may be your only option as many of us just use the apps so we can have the option on all rom but at least the more you and I hat back and forth the longer this topic will be at the top I have stock non rooted but rooting it probably next week so I can flash an older base band and will be changing my nav bar with that app.

p.s ... this baby will cost a solid 1000$ in my country for LTE model .
It's definitely more responsive after freezing a bunch of unnecessary (for me anyway) applications.
For me my primary reason for purchasing was for s-pen in a large form factor. Based on that I expected to just de-bloat and use stock s-pen applications. I have no interest in any other Android tablet at this time.
Question is sort of odd though; I wouldn't expect a lot of people to have gone through the hard decision of rooting such an expensive device and then say they felt it wasn't worth it.

well its not that odd bc its not just about the money etc its about the whole experience etc and what could you get out of the tablet with the more real estate and i have seen some people regretting buying it etc. am a junior architect and i was waiting for something that big to use it with the s-pen too .. in my place you wouldn't be able to resell the tablet if you didn't like it or didn't get what you expect from it etc even i watched many reviews about it and sounds pretty interesting the limitations around me makes me have some concerns thats it
Right, my point is the "is it worth it" evaluation for a person who has rooted their device will have already occurred before rooting so of course you'll get more responses in the affirmative. I suppose it's not impossible that some will chime in to say that even after rooting it's unacceptable. ...perhaps odd is the wrong thing to say...just don't expect a majority of people who have rooted to tell you that they wish they hadn't.

the lag is the same! i remove some of the bloat and not freezing. and im using nova prime launcher.
i guess we need to wait for the dev to release some ROM
and by the way, why are you guys freezing your stuff when your knox is already tripped?

It's sometimes good to freeze (at least as a test-bed) because some apps no matter how innocuous they may seem could be an integrated part of the system. Removing them might break functionality within other apps or even the system itself. For example, on some systems if you remove the pre-installed file manager because you prefer another (Solid Explorer RULES!), it might break the Gallery app which could interfere with setting wallpapers even from other apps. That example - from my phone.
I want root to address the following things...
1. Remove multiwindow application restrictions
2. Use LMT or similar launcher for home, back, menu, etc.
3. Change the DPI (smaller icons, more real estate).
4. Backup/restore with Titanium Backup
5. freeze/remove system apps/bloat.
6. Install AOSP browser w/Flash
Rooting I noticed nothing different. I installed xposed and wanam to get the things I like. The main thing that changed was I lost the symbols on my keyboard. I can still get them by hitting the sym key, but can't long press the letter keys to get the symbol. It doesn't matter what language it's set to, they are not there.
Also, my video player developed an issue when it set to fullscreen. Lines through it and very choppy.
So I have un installed wanam and exposed, and video is normal, but still no symbols. Had them out of the box.
Thinking about Un rooting to see if it fixes the issue on the keyboard.

4.4 will not support flash I've experienced. Let us know if you get that working.

I did try that with same results, I should have said that. I thought that would solve that too. With wanam and exposed uninstalled, I still can't get it back.

That's strange. I have Wanam installed and my keyboard is unchanged.

Right.....I think it happened upon root. Didn't notice it right away. Root is the only thing left to try with out having to odin Stock and start again. I have removed wanam and still unable to get it back. Thanks for letting me know that it's possible with wanam though!

Tried that as well. It should be enabled without wanam as well. As in Stock rooted. Not sure why I don't have it anymore

Update: I reinstalled xposed before I Un rooted, which I will not be doing. Installed the alternate keyboard symbols module, and they are back. I'll try wanam again, but leave the current module running.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Back to the rooted fun.

Got flash working using a modded flash.apk and Dolphin browser with jetpack. Works great!

For me, personally, no device is "worth it" without root access. So, I guess you can put me down for a "worth it." An unrooted device just... feels... it just plain feels wrong, man. *shivers*
