[Q] Return to Stock Without Odin - Epic 4G General

I am having a problem with my USB connection, it's gotten a bit warped...probably from all my rooting and Odining! I can charge with it, but my computer will not recognize it. I have the Total Equipment Protection, so I should be able to get this fixed, but I want to return to stock before bringing it in. I would Odin the phone, but at the moment, because of the USB issues, Odin is not recognizing the phone. I looked for links to flashing Stock without Odin in this forum, but they seem to be pretty old. Is there I flashable zip file I can use in CWM that will return my phone to the current unrooted stock rom?

I don't think. So. Even if you could get full stock your boot recovery will not be stock. But I could be wrong. Which end is bad the phone side or the usb side. You can always try a different port on your computer and see if that will work. Worst comes to worse. You can brick it and get one tell them that you was having charger issues and. And you went to plug your phone into the pc and you droped it and it wouldn't turn on.

I have the same problem you do. I have one usb cable that will work, the rest will only charge.

The best you can do is flash the ReRFS ROM. It looks like stock but you will still have root, custom recovery and superuser. Plus you are stuck with whatever modem baseband you are on.

What happens when you plug in the phone without odin open? Does it ask what option, I.e., mass storage, charging...?

Doesn't the stock kernel remove root from ReRFS? I think I remember it doing so. Try it, there isn't much to lose. If that works you can just use the stock recovery .zip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904
Another thought: When my PC wouldn't recognize my Epic, I had to reinstall the Galaxy S drivers and then it worked with Odin. You can try that too.

Your best bet is that the cable is busted. That happened to me but I fixed it byyyyy going to sprint and paying 20 bucks for a cable with two ends. One for data, one for charging. Yes, charges 2 devices at one time.

I wish it was the cable, but I am pretty sure it is the phone. I know when it happened, the connection does not feel right, it is a little loose. But thanks.

It charges fine, but does not recognize the phone. There is clearly something wrong with the USB connection on the phone, I can feel it, it is a bit loose, wobbly.

Oh ok. Well, it definitely has power! Actually, I had a friend who had a similar problem. His phone was a vibrant, but they are pretty much the same phone. All-in-all, it was trial and error to get it detected. I would get it like maybe 1 out of 40 attempts? We finally returned him to stock via odin, but he ended up getting a replacement. Surely a hardware issue. The weird is though, the computer would only find the phone if it was in download mode? Anyways, keep your phone in download mode, and have odin open. First try to take the battery out, have the cable plugged into your pc, odin is still open, and put your battery in while holding the "1" button. It should boot in download mode, and MAYBE see the phone? Try that. Also, make sure the port you're connecting to (on your pc) is directly attached to the motherboard. Mess with different ports. Let me know if there's any luck.

Oh, it's a hardware issue. I used this cable, and this USB port on my computer, many times without issue until the other day. Even if I do get the phone to appear in Odin, I am not sure I want to flash it that way, as I am afraid I will lose the connection midway, and then where will I be? If I can run a zip file in CWM as mentioned in a post above that seems like a safer way to go, and it's easy enough to copy that to the SD card when it's out of the phone. I would like my phone to look normal before I bring it in. It will probably be a couple of more days before I do this, though. I am not ready to yet.

Yeah. You can flash a zip and return it to stock, but cwm will still be on there. The only way to return (officially) to stock would be to use odin. This would replace the custom recovery with the stock recovery. Depending on which modem you're on, you can flash a "stock" rom, and put tw launcher on it? As long as you have an updated backup, you can odin. Even if odin fails in the process, this will only soft-brick the device. And that is an easy fix. Just go into download mode and try again. Lol. My buddy with the vibrant had odin fail many times. We actually recovered from the "pc-phone" error screen. If you're getting a replacement, you must put it back to stock. Depending on which insurance/warranty service you're using, it is wise to play it safe. I highly recommend you get a replacement though. Just tell them you have a usb hardware issue.

[Q] Stuck on DK28? Want EB13 real bad...need help

Hey All,
Currently, my epic is running DK28. I think something is physically messed up with the USB connection (this is my guess), since it never is recognized on any computer (tried multiple). Also, the options for USB hard drive or charge only never appear when plugged into computer.
SO, I am wondering if there is anyway to get back to DI18 via an update.zip mechanism. I am able to use SwiftFTP to get files back and forth from the SD slot. But since the USB drive is not recognized by the comp., Odin or the Samsung update tool are not options.
Wondering if there is any other suggestions out there for me,
Thanks
Also, since I'm running DK28, sprint stores will not operate or give me a new phone since its not the "official" version... already tried.
the only way you are going to be able to update is to get usb working (un/reinstall drivers, use a diff cable, use diff usb ports, etc) and either odin or use the eb13 update .exe on your pc
the only other option you have right now is to wait on a cwm flashable system dump but that will not give you the modem or other things that you will probably need...
so i say fix the usb issue...that is really your only option
I've tried multiple different USB cables, reinstalled drivers (on numerous pc's), and used different ports on those pc's. I think i'm probably SOL on this one.
here is a cwm flashable zip to take you back to di18. [Linky]
You will still need to put the stock recovery back after that if you are trying to go totally stock. I know the files for it are around here somewhere, and iirc they may be in the di18 odin tar.

Ok. Thanks,
I will try to flash the zip provided. If it works and i get back to DI18, then would I be able to flash the EB13 update zip floating around? Sorry, I am a little confused.

I tried the update.zip and I get the E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted message. Oh well, thanks though.
Looks like I'm stuck with this one for a while.
Does USB work in download mode? If so you can use ODIN, if not the ROM is not your problem.
USB does not work in download mode either... get some error messages from windows, USB not recognized and such.
reinstall your samsung drivers if that doesn't work you have a big problem.
edit. Try another computer as well
Your usb port may have gone bad. My first epic usb wouldnt do anything after having it for like 30 days so the sprint store just replaced it.

Ya. I tried that. But since i'm stuck on DK28, they won't look at it. The considered it "rooted" even though it isn't. And wouldn't take a look at it. They just gave it back to me.

What are you selecting to flash the zip? If you are doing it right, there should be no signature verification.
Also, after flashing the zip, you might download the ota, but it won't install until you put the stock recovery back, too.
edit: Don't you have clockworkmod?

Most likely, the USB cord is the problem. If the computer tells you, the driver was successfully installed, then that's the least of ur problems. I had problems similar to what ur having (USB not recognized, doesn't recognize in Download mode, etc etc.) All I had to do was find a USB cord that worked correctly (the one that came with the phone is not reliable 100%) and all ur problems should be solved!

HELP phone, yeild, computer sing! (BRICKED?)

PLEASEEE!!! help me out i tried upgrading from kies mini to froyo. I did this with success earlier in the past on my old vibrant but had it replaced to a referbished one and i tried upgrading it now.. but my vibrant was stuck at downloading the uprade on kies mini at 1% for half an hour... and the vibrant had the android shoveling yellow sign saying do not turn off target... for half an hour as well.. I knew something was wrong there because it didnt take even close to that long last time..
NOW I tried unplugging the usb wire restarting the phone in emergency mode still nothing... now all i have is a cellphone...yeild sign... computer icon showing..
PLEASE HELP!!!
Dont worry you totally didnt brick your phone. Its pretty common, can you get your phone into download mode? If you can then just odin to stock.
1.Take your battery, sim card and SD card out
2. Plug in USB Cable
3. Hold volume up/down and plug in battery (There are a few ways of doing download mode and I believe its phone specific, or if you have bootloaders installed its different as well, google around a bit...
4. Start odin and presto, your phone works again!
hey thanx... I just did that.. I never used odin but i installed odin with all the files... I believe my vibrant is hardware locked because i was trying to get into download mode for 2 hours with different techniques.. such as just volume keys and power button... taking out the battery holding volume keys then putting it back in.. but nothing put me into a downlaod mode... somehow odin still found my phone while i was still stuck under that picture...
I loaded the .pit file without the jfd image.... becuase i didnt know what window i was suppose to load the jfd image from... like pda.. or etc???
anyway so i just loaded the .pit file and clicked start it reset the phone and the phone went into restart mode and it turned on fine i checked it works fully... lol.
It makes no sense... was i suppose to load the jfd file somewhere?????
i still want to upgrade my vibrant to 2.2... but now whenever i turn on the keis mini it promps me to emergency recovery upgrade... so i tried doing that and went into download mode since now i can.. and plugged in my phone but the progress bar on my computer for upgrading never moved from 0%... its odd... am i doing something wrong?
so again i disconnected and "bricked" my vibrant again lol... went into odin followed the same steps just loading the .pit file and it reset the vibrant back to normal again lol...
Im so confused yet happy that i have my phone working but i still want my froyo... i love the fact that i can use yahoo video messaging on it with froyo and have flash and other benefits..
any advice?
Thanx again
try this...........
power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
put pit in pit and tar in pda on odin
Connect it to the PC and see if ODIN recognizes it.
If it does, you are safe, flash stock.
EDIT: nvm, didn't notice the third post was yours.
Anyways, if ODIN can STILL recognize it, get the first from the link on the post above, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and enjoy your again-useful phone.
I had that same issue once.
Try a JIG. And do a search, I see like 50 posts a week like this.

Thank you all for taking your time to help. I have one last question... since I used Odin but it just reset my phone and I didn't flash the old firware on it..... ever since that now I tried to update my phone with kies mini and it says phone unregistered... in that place before it used to say new firmware available and showed old forward numbers/letters.
So if I use odin all the way will this resolve "unregistered device" problem?
Thanx again

Bricked
I have a similar issue, was soft bricked, Odin to stock then, while using Mini Kies to upgrade back to Froyo the phone turned off and never came back on. I cannot get any response from the phone as far as light's or sounds. Checked a few batteries and still no use. I'm curious if anybody else has had a similar experience?
so if it should solve the unregisted problem... where I put in the pda file... is it possible to put in the last froyo there so odin could flash froyo on my phone so basically i wont have to go through kies process?
odin back to 2.1 then root and then flash a 2.2 rom way better then a stock 2.2 rom

Make sure you have the right odin files, once you have gotten back to normal just do a factory reset on your phone if that is possible. Then root, flash, and do whatever you want to do. Without your proper files for odin you'll get bricked or get something different.
How screwed am I? Odin doesn't recognize phone, vibrant aio toolkit can't adb phone into recovery or download mode. Flashing different rom screwed up during kernal phase and I stupidly rebooted phone. I CAN use a jig I bought to get into download mode but computer Odin doesn't 'see' it.

ok guys i know i aksed for a lot of help.. but i have a newly discovered problem.. when i connect my vibrant thru the original usb port to transfer files back and forth it never lets me transfer even the smallest picture image... on both internal 16gb or sd... the phone computer just constantly shows transferring animation.... i tried many times.. i even scanned the phones hard drive and sd card for errors... nothing... could it be i messed something up with kies? or thats why kies in general never went with the upgrade past 1%?
its a refurbished phone.. when i got it.. i uploaded my old pics without a problem with the same usb cable..... its weird.... i dont know what to do? what is it likely the phone itself or i messed it up with kies upgrade????
please help.. its frustrating me

After Flashing my SGS2 100's of times, it's now a paperweight

ok, maybe not 100's of times but my bootloader showed 52 last time i flashed. Not sure what happened, but something went wrong. My phone only shows a picture of a phone, with a yellow triangle, and a picture of a computer. Under that it says firmware failed, and under that it says try recovery mode. Download mode, and recovery mode shows the the same screen described as above, and odin does not see phone. I left the battery out over night, and this morning, the same screen, and odin still don't see the phone. I know all the key combos to get into recovery or download mode, and neither works.
You have a bricked phone now. Use JIG USB to save it!
I had similar problem and resolved mine by removing the battery, reinserting it and holding down volume down and home keys while powering on (download mode). Then I connected phone to pc via usb and used odin to flash kernel. Hope that works for you.
Or you could try this
One-Click UnBrick
it seems this is the job for a USB jig (I think)

Bah, just take out battery and put it back in and go to download mode and flash the firmware with Odin.
Thanks God i've got my Jig..
is it related with the limitation write of the NAND flash? quite worry about it..any idea?
You only need a jig if you can't get into download mode. Though from what I've read on here might be good to have to reset the flash counter.

Does the number of times flashed has anything to do with the failure? Is there a limit after which the hardware gets weaker?
Believe me. Most rom chefs or developers in here flash at least 500+ times (if they tested their product) and I don't think they have issue. (I flash my X1 at least a 1000+ times when I was a rom chef and it's still working great now)
Flash memory does have a life span on number or Read/write. But I doubt anyone here can reach that limit with 3+ yrs (by that time, you will probably get another phone).
Agreed its unlikely that 50 odd our even a few hundred rom flashes should damage your nand memory. Unless it was faulty in the first place

This problem..
..Was notorious on the Captivate. We lovingly referred to it "Phone ! Computer" screen.
The good news.. If you see this screen the level 1 boot loader is fine and you are only soft bricked.
If you ever plug in the phone to a power source with it turned off and you see nothing then you're screwed.
Same scenario as when you plug in a JiG and nothing happens.

Hold and do not release the key combo for DLM, your phone will reboot about 3 times it should then enter DLM.
I did try this before your reply and no go, I tried again today, got the same screen, however Odin and kies, both saw the phone, went back to stock then back to cognition 1.31. My captivate, inspire, and infuse ive flashed over and over and over and never bricked a phone until my S2. It's back up and going strong now. Now im afraid to flash it again. This is best phone ever and im keeping it until the S3 comes out, so im trying to not render my S2 useless yet lol

**** happens. Flashes go right 99.9% of the time when you do everything right. You just hit that 0.1% where something went wrong during the flash.

USB Charging works, PC won't detect tablet at all.

My tablet has been working fine for as long as I can remember. It's unlocked and was running a rooted stock rom. All good so far.
I can charge the tablet fine. Thought I would try flashing Paranoid Android. Here's where my problems started.
Plugged the tablet into my PC to backup the contents of the storage, wasn't detected at all. No flicker of anything in device manager. Have hooked it up to a linux machine and watched the output of syslog to see if it was spotted there, but nothing.
Decided to not worry about backing up and did a full wipe, apart from system, to take it back to factory.
No difference.
Downloaded Paranoid Android via the browser and flashed it from CWM. Flashed fine, but still no USB.
Now I want to take it back to stock so I can send it back under warranty, but HOW?
Any bright ideas??
Is there any sort of USB drivers in your device manager relating to your tablet.
You need to remove those drivers, restart and re-plug.
If not, I'd try to download a flash zip, and flash it from the device itself, as you won't be able to flash it from PC if it doesn't recognise it.

The device is completely unrecognised via USB. Drivers don't even come into it.
Suggestions for where I can get a flash zip of the stock rom? As far as I can tell, it doesn't exist.
what about "fastboot devices" in fastboot mode?

Nope. Nothing. The USB port is completely useless for anything but charging now.
A friend has just flashed a stock image for me and sent me a nandroid backup of his tablet, going to try and get that onto it now.
And now I'm back with a stock rom, but custom recovery. Need to work out how to flash the stock recovery back from the recovery.img file.
All sorted. Used Flash Image GUI to flash the stock recovery.img back. Only thing I haven't been able to do is relock the bootloader, but I can't see that affecting my RMA.
They're picking it up in the next couple of days then should be no more than 10 days to get it back to me.
Link to Flash Image GUI in case it helps anyone else!

An unlocked bootloader is a voided warranty. In all likelyhood, they will reject the warranty validity and make you pay for repairs.

This is a situation I'm prepared for. It needs fixing one way or the other. At least I've given myself the best chance of a warranty repair. If it ends up costing, so be it!
Could be your usb cable. Happened to my nexus s!

Hi, so did you fix the problem and you PC is recognizing the tablet now ? I still have the same problem, the PC doesn't see the tablet, even as a unknown device or something else. Is the same as i do not plug it, the only difference is that is charging.
If you fixed this problem .. how did you do it ?
Hi,
Yeah I RMA'd it with Asus and they repaired it under warranty. It's still going strong now running CM.

Hi, do you know what they fixed ? What was the problem ?
To be perfectly honest, I think they just swapped it out.

I'm asking you because I have the same problem as you .. I changed the micro USB module but is still not working. I'm just asking what something else it could be.

If you have changed the USB port check the connection at both ends of the ribbon cable if they are both OK then the motherboard is at fault. The nexus7 has the worst protective circuitry I've ever seen on a device so its easy to inadvertently damage the motherboard.

Mine is on its way back for 3rd for this very same issue. So we'll see what they repaired this time or if they just replaced it. Hopefully the latter because my warranty is now up. Do they have a warranty period on their repairs?
1st Mainboard
2nd USB Assembly

That is correct. I received it back yesterday & the replaced the mainboard again. This time they put in a 8G board instead of a 32G so it had to go right back. I am not sure if it ever be fixed, there is something going on. I should not have had to send it in 3 times for the some issue.

[Q] Help - GS4 - Even Best Buy could not Flash

Hello All,
I am quite new to the world of Android, but have searched and read up for multiple days on this site before finally posting my issue.
I have a GS4 that had been running stock with the MF3 OTA update. I finally decided to root and install safestrap to mess with a few custom roms. Everything went well. I was able to create a Rom Slot and load a custom rom for testing whilst keeping my stock in original form. NO issues what so ever. I used the Wicked Rom.... Eventually I decided that I would delete Rom Slot 1 and go back to stock. I followed directions to the T, deleted the slot and selected to boot from Stock. NO GO. This is where the horror begins:
Now, the phone boots up but I see the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo and it stays there...does not go back. I no longer see the SafeStrap recovery screen when booting up. --- I cannot even get into recovery on the phone any longer: it says recovery booting in blue and stays there.
I am able to get into Download mode to re-flash - but naturally none of the stock firmware files are loadable via Odin due to an error I keep getting NAND Flash! (Fail).
I finally decided to drive to Best Buy and asked the guy to flash my phone to stock there. He put the phone in download mode and used their multiflash tool which did not detect the phone and thus he could not move forward. The laptop did detect the phone at best buy, but their software did not and thus flashing did not occur.
I am looking for any and all advice to get this phone running without having to return it to Samsung....please and thanks in advance.
My apologies if my search did not yield a positive result and there is something out there....
Well There is no way to flash with Odin while on MF3, so that effort is completely fruitless at this time. Did the guy try a different USB port, cord or even restarting the computer he was using?
Can you get into your recovery to do a factory reset?

Best buy should be able to do it. I remember reading somewhere that someone had to go to 3 different stores before they found someone smart enough to do it.. Lol

I cannot get into recovery at all, it just says recovery booting and sits there....recovery booting is displayed at the top left of the screen in blue.
The guy did not try a different port or reboot. When he plugged the phone in, in download mode, the computer did recognize the phone but his Samsung software did not.

Well he is an idiot for not troubleshooting his system. I have had the same exact thing happen with multiple different computers and phones. The computer detects the device correctly, but the program I needed to use would not. More often than anything a quick changing of ports or a reboot of the computer fixed it. I have had to completely wipe out the drivers a few times and reinstall them to get it to work. 9 times out of ten, it is not the phone that is the culprit, it is something else before the phone.

FIXED
Well it seems the guy at my best buy was a TOOL! I took the phone in again today, had the battery pulled before I arrived - put it in download mode for him. Told him that Samsung tech support said he should reboot his pc. He did. Voila, reflashed to stock. Thank goodness....thank you guys for the advice.
Apply cold water directly to burned area.
Who's awesome?
ME!
Anyways, glad you are back up.
