[Q] Error writing to sd card - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
I am running CM7.1 off a 4gig sd card on an otherwise stock NC. Most things are working as intended. I can install apps from the market and they install and run fine.
The problem comes up when I try and sideload anything to the sd card. If I connect the NC to a pc with the usb cable and enable usb storage mode and try to copy a file to the sd card I get the error "Cannot copy [filename]: The parameter is incorrect." but I can write the file to internal memory without an issue.
If I try and write a file to the sd card using the 'File Expert' app by copying form a network share to sd it appears to copy the file and the file shows in the directory but it is corrupt. File Expert cannot generate an MD5 sum to compare with the original and the file can not be loaded into an app (ebook reader for ebubs, etc.) it just returns an error that the file is invalid. I can copy files to the internal memory using the same method and everything works fine.
Downloads from a browser also abort and nothing is written to the sd card but apps downloaded from the market install fine.
Could this be a permission issue? A problem with the sd cards partition? Is there something else I should be looking at to help diagnose this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cant copy to SD with Clockwork

This seems to much of a coincidence to not be linked.
I am running my my first build (MIUI) using clockwork recovery and now I cant copy files to the SD card. When in the build I mount the SD card, copy the files accross from PC (a variety of mp3 files and swype). It copies accross fine and shows on my SD card (when looking at from the pc) but when I'm in the device they are not shown (via file explorer) and music player doesnt detect them.
Swype shows as 0MB and says parsing error.
Never had this with then old roms or NAND build.
Is this something to do with partitioning? I have an 8GB card and chose 250mb partition.
Thanks.

Cant save to sd card / ext sd files copying to computer before opening

Is there a way to prevent this? If I try to open any office documents from the external SD card on the S3, it will open it as a separate file in a temporary folder in windows. I am not able to save as back to the SD folder. It will say Read Only. I can not even write to the SD card if I have the file that is in the SD card open. I believe this is the way MTB works, but on my DroidX, I did not have this problem. Is there a solution to this?

Internal SD card disappeared!

I was having a weird bug. I could create folders on the internal SD card.
I was reinstalling an emulator (Drastic) when it started throwing a strange error about not being able to create a saves folder. After some investigation I found out I could not create *any* folder at all in the internal SD. More specifically, I cannot create a folder on the root of the internal SD; the external SD and all the other folders of the internal SD work as normal. In other words, I can not create a folder on /storage/sdcard0
Now, however, my internal SD cards has simply vanished! I am unable to find it on Settings > Storage or on my card. After rebooting back and forth it is back up, however it doesn't appear on my PC (neither in Linux nor in Windows) when I connect using mass storage, nor can I still create folders. The external SD appears on Windows Explorer as normal (and I can run chkdsk on it).
Running chkdsk on the internal SD yields the following error message: "Cannot open volume for direct access." even though it is listed on the drive list.
I think I have provided all the info I can. I would be grateful for any help.
PS: Nobody on my device forum seems to have this issue, so it's not a ROM or device problem.
You tried reflashing with other ROM mate?

The problem was not the ROM. Yesterday I ran fsck on it and it fixed all issues.

Are you sure that the microsd card is ok with no damage ? I kindly advise that you can test the condition of the microsd card directly on other PCs or make use of this microsd card after inserted into a gadget like the following : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GLL40SA . If it works, you may try to format the card and process the same operation like creating folders. Remember to back up the important data anyway.

[Q] Problem writing to SD card

Has anyone else experienced problems writing files to external SD card just lately? All I know is that the SD card works fine If I use it on the computer with a card reader.
For instance if I copy 300mb of titaniumbackup files it will randomly stop in the process and tell me there is a problem writing the files. This also happens with other files. I can't seem to find anything in the logs either, but then I'm not exactly sure what to look for.
I've tried ES file explorer, the CM11 file explorer and FX file exporer. I've reformatted the SD card using CWM, put it in my card reader on my computer and was able to copy over 40gb of data flawlessly so the card doesn't seem to be corrupt.
I'm not really sure where to start with the troubleshooting, as I said before I'm not sure what I'm looking for in the log files regarding failed file transfers.

If the sdcard is not already formatted with fat32 your best bet is to format it
fat32 and there is an excellent chance that you will be able to use it in your
phone and computer without any further issues.
Here is a direct download link for the windows fat32 formatter:

Good luck!

I switched to slimkat rom to try it out. It's also based on 4.4 and the same kernel as what I had before. I re-formatted the sd card to fat32 at the same time but everything seems to work now. I wonder what it was. Maybe just a kitkat bug with exfat that still needs to be sorted out

Error when trying to copy files between phone and SD card

I am unable to transfer files from my phone memory to my sd card.
I am also unable to transfer files from my pc to sd card in the phone. I have no issue transferring files from pc to phone memory.
I can view and open files on the sd card and the phone is able to play music and movies stored on the sd card.
Can anyone help me fix this issue?
Thanks!
I don't have such problem at all.
Try different file browsers like ES File Explorer and Astro.
If those do not work, try and factory reset your phone and ask for a replacement if the problem still persists after that.

Does the phone read the sd card? Do you have anything on it to access? If not I would suggest formatting the sd card.

The phone reads all the files on the sd card. I get an error that says Access denied when i copy a file from the phone memory to any folder on the SD card...however I get no error when I copy the files to the root SD card. It's weird...not sure whats going on.
You need to use the stock file manager to copy to the sd card or from the sd to internal as this is a "security feature" since Android lollipop. If you wish to use any other file explorer you MUST be rooted...

I use ES File Explorer and it works - and I won't root until ZTE posts full factory roms for the US version.
I still think there is some issue with the sd card that can be solved by formatting it - if the phone won't move files to it and the pc recognizes the phone but not the sd card how did you get files on it in the first place?

Not true. I just used Solid Explorer to copy files from internal memory to the SD card. There was an extra procedure of selecting the sd card in what looks like the stock storage selection menu thing (that also has Drive, Downloads etc) which was apparently necessary for Solid Explorer to get the necessary permission. Maybe it doesn't work with old file explorer apps that haven't implemented this solution, but it definitely works with Solid Explorer without root.
