Request - Complete N00b's Guide to flashing HTC Touch Viva to Win Mo 6.5

People,
Problem: I want to upgrade my HTC Touch Viva to Win Mo 6.5.
Riders: I want to ensure that if required, I can flash the HTC original ROM that the company gave on phone. I have already downloaded original ROM from amarkangda 's thread.
My Status: I had an Asus P320 which I had upgraded to Win Mo 6.5. It involved copying the flash.bin (or whatever it was) to mem card, boot it with some keys pressed (service mode or somethin like that) and it took on from there.
Requirements: I am too confused with SPL and what not since this is my first HTC phone. Can anyone please provide a complete step by step (Bullet Point wise) guide as to what I have to do to upgrade the phone to Windows Mobile 6.5.
I tried the search function but was not able to find anything. If there is something and you know a link to it, please provide it. I will be highly obliged.
do hard reset fast
see the link for flashing ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446446)
I Agree
I think that "The N00b's Guide to Flashing Opal" really is needed...
i mean, yes, there are a couple of guides with some information on "how to" but nothing complete and simple enough for noobs... there are a lot of new HTC users that have never flashed a phone before and have no idea how to do it, and even some experienced users on flashing other brands (mi personal experience, i used to flash motorola V3, Z6 and L7i) but get really lost when it comes to flashing HTC.
And after i learned i tried to help other new users but without success (see post 4 and 5 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=638911).
A complete guide should be made with all the terminology explained, the most common methods to flash, where to find stock roms, what kind of custom roms are there (ej. Light rom, cooked rom, what winmo ver is it using and pros and cons on all of them, etc.) all the software needed and a step by step guide with FAQ included. it should be community maintained to keep it always up-to-date.
I'll offer my help for anything needed and for Spanish translation.

i'm sorry that this is just a copy and paste (and a bit of editing) from another post that i wrote, but i'll be easier for you:
I had the exact same problem when i first started to flash htc opal... didn't know how to do it, and didn't know what rom to use... maybe someone should create a complete, step by step guide (flashing opal for dummies) and post it as sticky...
ok, here it goes...
Flashing:
0.- if you'll be using a cooked rom (a modified Rom), you'll need to do a hardSPL. check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446446 (HardSPL is basically the way to remove the drm lock on the phone)
1.- Make sure that you have activesync if you are using windows xp or windows device manager if you are using windows vista and the latest version of .net framework installed on your pc.
2.- unzip the new rom files on a folder somewhere accesible (desktop for example)
3.- connect the device as an activesync conection, make sure the battery is charged 50% or more
4.- just run the RUU installer (Rom Update Utility), sometimes named CustomRUU.
5.- Follow the onscreen instructions.
YOU ARE DONE.
that's it... no complications, no special drivers, no weird commands or files to copy and paste. so simple. Just one thing: make sure you don't disconect usb during rom update.
so, resumed: Download Rom, Connect activesync, run RUU, done.
About what's the best 6.5 rom: PhamQuang. check for the latest on the rom development section. but different users will recommend different roms, so i'll recommend to try several before sticking to a particular one.
great...

if he isn't going to use a cooked rom (modified rom) what should he be doing flashing???
neways...good of you to help noobies out.
@mohitkumar
there is an alternate way to do the same: which one is harder or easier is up to you
RUU (Rom Update Utility) via SDCard (your memory card) search for it in the forum.
Thanks Guyz.
So HardSPL has to be done, there is no escaping doing that?
Do I absolutely need to have DotNet on my PC? (I do not particularly like it, it slows down my PC)
Since I have already upgraded the Asus P320 from SD card, that will always be an option for me. Any ideas or links to rom which i can just put in sdcard, boot in service mode(or whatever with that volume down key pressed thingy) and it takes on from there, no hardspl etc? Just like i did for the Asus P320..
Especially if it saves me from going through installing .net on PC.
Yes
as far as i know: Yes and Yes... there's no scaping hardSLP because that's the one that'll let you install a modified rom... And .Net is needed because all update utilities will use it (HardSPL and RUU)...
But as Freelancer81 said, there's an alternate way to install a custom RUU through the SD card for the Opal too, i'll let you find that out on your own because i have never used that method nor have any previous experience on similar methods.... maybe you wont need HardSPL and .NET this way.
I'm searching for Volunteers to create the noobs guide to flashing opal... anyone willing to help PM me.
Hmm, so i will search for a ROM that can be installed from the card. May be, just may be, it can be done without the HardSPL thing.
If that fails, I will stick it up and go with process given here.

As far as i know you cant install any cooked rom via SD card with out hardspl only official roms can be flashed via SD without hardspl. Bro if you are so afraid about ur warranty then i would suggest u to use default os for more time, or install hardspl u can retain ur warranty by flashing stock spl when needed.

[Q] Please help, I want to install ROM

I have an HTC Touch/Elf, with 47.93MB of memory, and a 201mhz Processor. I am completely new to flashing ROMs, so I ask here.
I know the stickies probably have what I need, but I read through all of them, and couldn't find a sufficient guide.
I need to flash Windows Mobile 6.5 onto my phone, which I have tried doing, but get error 270 on RUU, telling my to check my updater utility.
Can someone make a step-by-step guide, telling me exactly what to do to install the ROM, and could someone point out the best WinMo 6.5 ROM on these forums?
Thanks!
Hi,
did you read the first Thread in this section (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406721) ? There ist all you need step by step.
Necessarily you need to do 7.) to 11.) but becaus you are new i would advise you to read 1.) to 6.) too.
//EDIT: Im using the Onyx Rom, its very stable. But i got back to WM6.1 (onyx 4) because 6.5 was a bit to slow for me.
Make sure you CID unlock etc first. You must read all the guides through, even a few times.
PLease read the sticky.

[Q][Solved] Dual boot WinMo6.5 and Android

Hello everybody !
First off, I apologize for my bad english !
I only have a little question : is it possible to install both WinMob6.5 and Android in NAND, or is it required to install Android on SD card ?
I searched all around the board, but I didn't find any satisfying answer (maybe I didn't search very well)
Thanks for reading!
If you want to keep Windows Mobile, and have Android, you'll need to run Android from SD. You can only have one OS on NAND at a time.
Sent from phone
You can not run 2 OS from NAND, so its not possible.
Tanks for your anserws, I will run Android from my SD !
Hi all, I have a smiliar issue regarding WM 6.5 and Android.
I haven't got a clue about flashing the ROM or rooting the phone but my SPL version when I bought the HD2 was already 3.03. I installed Gingerbread 2.3 on the SD Card and it was all running fine but if I power off or reboot my phone it switches back to WM 6.5 which I don't want to happen.
Is there a way to prevent it or have I done something wrong/missed a step?
Thanks for any help.
You can use a WinMo bootloader, like this one. If you are not interested in flashing Windows Phone 7 or NAND Android, it's the best option.
You can prevent switches almost completely (no winmo, but 3 seconds of magldr) by installing magldr, but I don't think that you want it. It doesn't have any sense when you just want to have SD Android.

There are two ways to run android:
- SD card
- flashing android in NAND
if you choose the first option, you have to start android from your SD card.
when you reboot your phone, WM will start. i believe you chose this option.
the second one replaces WM completely! (there are ways to change it back if you dont wanna have this anymore)
if you start your phone, android will boot instead of WM.
there are different ROMs for the 2 options you have. just have a look in the forums:
SD ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=735
NAND ROMs: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=928
just follow this tutorial if you wanna replace WM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948
there is a big FAQ thread for this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905841
Good luck, its not that hard.
prexx
Thanks for your help guys. I've watched the video and it seems fairly straight forward to install the NAND Android as I want WM gone completely.
Very much appreciated to a newbie at this sort of thing!

OK,I ve made a thread before but none seems to be interested...I have a T-mobile htc hd2 tha runs on custom winmo6.5 rom...i want to install wp7 but as soon as i install em touchscreen does not respond at all...then i get back to winmo6.5 and everything works great...i ve tried hundreds of tutorials and performed every step very carefully...PLEASE HELP ME!
yeah I think I remember, did you try android?
did you try downloading the latest Original HTC ROM un-modded directly from them and SD card install it?
Its possible that the digitiser is just slightly different for one reason or another than other peoples devices which might not play well with the driver?
have you tried out the ultrafruit ROM, that uses a different drive to Pdamatejam so try them both?
it could well be hardware mate, even corrupt RAM can give off some odd behaviour if you didn't get the answer you were looking for before then its likely that we didn't have an answer to help you.
oh PS
im not one for picking up on spelling and grammar etc (mine sucks!) but see the use of ! you don't really need more than 3, like this!!!
more often than not 1 will suffice!

be careful of ultrafruit...i've read it's buggy...you probably want to try yuki/xbmod back to the future rom. just make sure you install the devstoragelock.cab so you can unlock your sd card before flashing another wp7 flavor.
i believe i responded to your original thread and asked which rom you were using and also if you performed the required magdlr prep steps? i don't think you ever answered. the prep steps being 10-services, 5-clear mbr, and 4-uselast24nand...then flash.
perform task29, install magdlr, perform prep, flash.

yuki/xbmod's bttf rom is the only rom that locks the sd card. if you haven't used bttf then you have nothing to worry about. also, if your sd was locked the card would be useless period. the card would not be recognized by any pc nor phone until unlocked again.
like i said try bttf rom and see if it makes the screen work. i believe hd2o, ansar, and pdajim's, and others use the ultrafruit as their core. bttf is pure original microsoft wp7 base...and was working long before ultrafruit even came out.

if your screen is working with wm6.5 and perhaps android, then for some reason wp7 has interface issues with your phone. i guess the question is does your entire screen work without issues in wm6.5 and/or android. if so, it's a wp7 interface issue...if the screen isn't 100% in wm6.5 then it's probably a digitizer issue.
actually, if you've replaced the digitizer before, it could be the replacement hardware causing
the wp7 interface issue. i guess it depends on the quality of the replacement screen's firmware.

you need read how to install cabs for wp7. it's very diffeerent than wm6.5. you have to use the cab sender tool. get the base flash exe from my signature...the v2.1 flasher. then go here for info.
#1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236027
#2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250869
then download ftp is is here just for the devstoragelock cab..

if you decide to progress further than the initial base the rest of the needed downloads are here.

the devstoragelock cab adds an app to your list of apps and follow screen. be sure to unlock the sd card if this rom doesn't fix the screen issue before trying flash back to wm6.5.

it's probably the replacement screen used by the previous owner. you should install android on sd...no flashing required. just reformat your sd to fat32. or you can install in nand.
either case i would recommend this..

I'm late to this thread.
OP - have you successfully installed the Yuki BTTF ROM for WP7? That ROM is super stable an no one has complained of the touch screen not working.
All of your posts don't give a conclusive answer that you've successfully installed that ROM. If you had installed it, then your SD card would be locked to that OS. If it were installed and the touchscreen weren't working, then you wouldn't be able to unlock the SD card, as you'd need to use the screen in order to select the storage lock app that you would have installed via cab sender.
Please clean this conversation up by listing exactly what steps you've done and provide links to the ROM's that you've tried.

you have to use hd2toolkit found in the android for hd2 forum to install nand android. it's an extensive set of instructions on how to install nand android for the hd2. you cannot use magdlr to install nand android.
in order to install sd android, you have follow and setup certain things in magdlr to boot the sd android installation. for sd android you DO NOT flash anything.
go to the android for hd2 forum and read...read...read....ESPECIALLY if you want to flash nand android!
