Best ROM/Kernel combination. - Galaxy S II General

hi guys, I'd like to hear your opinion about what's the best setup for this device.
Main point: your battery life.
Thanks

Stock rom for you as you are not capable of using the search button nor reading the custom roms posts .
Question in Q&A
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299593
Plus ten thousand identical posts .
jje

I also suggest stock rom. It's the best. Don't even think about anything else, otherwise you'll just be back crying about stuff that don't work... trust me. Go play outside instead.

Lite'ning Rom 6.1 and Speedmod t40 kernal!
Did mine last night and it's doubled my battery life!
Lite'ning ROM is a Stock ROM with added extras and a cool blue effect running on 2.3.4.
Gtalk video works and not found one bug yet!
Will keep this for a while!

No offence to the OP but this, along with other questions has been asked countless times on here, a simple search of the forum will bring up many threads relating to this.

agghghhh!!!!
not ANOTHER one of these threads....(head proceeds to explode)
seriously, how many times are people gonna post this complete waste of time thread?
Are you telling me you had a look at the 1000 threads like this, couldnt make your mind up based oj the asnwers given and decided to start a new one?
Or will you admit you didnt look to see if your question has already been asked a million times and just went ahead and posted this 'thread'?

Lightning rom is also not updated and is old news

In my opinion, Batista70 Foxhound Edition 2.1 and kernel Siyah v1.8 would be the best choice right now.
It's smooth and save battery life than ever.

Best ROM threads are subjective since many variables over battery life... Same with Radio since will depend on so many variables...
Best thing to do is take your time to read ROM threads and make a backup of ROM using then flash away find what ROM/Radio suits you best.
On that note thread closed.

whats is the best (cooked or uncooked) rom?

please help me to find the best rom. i tried many roms but most of the consumes battery so quickly that i have to unflash them quick.
wishlist:
1- Longest possible battery *Important*
2- must be stable... no bugs
3- Limited amount of softwares installed. i love to install my own favorite ones.
4- prefer rom built using leo 2.10 (for HTC E-Reader)
5- desirable WM 6.5.5
6- desirable HTC E-Reader (tab is optional. App will do)
all you experience guys please help... its really difficult for me to choose one and i have already nearly bricked my mobile so a little bit scared to keep flashing every rom...
Thanks in advance
you're gonna get a lot of people annoyed that you started a thread like this
it's a personal choice
i don't see why instead of going into the correct section and reading the first three lines of the available ROM's you started your own thread specifying what it is that you want
ROM DEVELOPMENT
ITS ALL THERE!
Before the thread gets locked, I'll tell you that you need to wait 2-3 days before passing judgment on battery life. It takes about 2-3 full charge/discharge cycles before the ROM 'calibrates.' The first use after ROM flash will almost always give you terrible battery life.
its a general question about choosing the best ROM. it has nothing to do with rom development. i think this is the best area to ask question... i thankfully appreciate that many people are spending enormous time on developing roms but i think i have right to choose the one that suits my needs...

true but they are all dated now
mate, in the rom development section, click on a rom, and on the first post it will say what it does
for example laurentius has good battery life
artemis is windows5.5 and very stable
cleanex and leolite have been stripped to make it faster
duttys has been tweaked for speed
they all say what they do

Why are all the threads about what is the best rom dated????
because the mods lock them. every single one of them.
why? because there is no best rom.
every rom suits someones needs. so every rom is for someone the best rom.
read all the threads and in every single rom thread you will find people saying that that rom is the best rom.
as said before a rom is personal. read the fisrt few posts and try a few. you will find yours then.
seems like leolite is going to be my rom i am downloading and hoping that it will be stable and less hungry on the battery...
thansk for quick tips guys

Best rom for my epic 4g?

Hey guys, hoping you guys can give some insight to a noob on this. I am looking to install a good rom on my phone. I'm leaning how to do this, but what I am looking for is speed and functionality. Themes are not that important, but would be cool. I do have the DK28 and is rooted, so I might need a good video to show me how to rom this phone properly. But as far as rom's go, I'm looking for one that is a really good rom.
Thanks in advance
Mike
Welcome to Rooting your phone. As far as the best ROM? There is no one best ROM, everyone has a different preference and outlook on speed. Any of the latest EXT4 ROMs will probably suit you though. Here is a link that will help you pretty much with everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
They have guides on how to ROOT, ROM, THEME and other things. It has the links to kernels, roms, themes all there. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Quantum
Viper
Im going to the new Nebula (twin Jets) now with EXT4
Have fun and good luck

Cool thanks. Are there any video's that show how these are installed? I saw some on youtube, but they were not that great of quality, and was unable to really get a good view of how to do it.
Thanks again
Videos
These videos don't show how they are installed but give a nice overview of some of the most popular current roms. I found them really useful.

Thanks viper. I'm looking though them now. Just trying to find a video on how to install a rom. I have picked one out and looking for instruction on how t install. I don't want to brick the phone since it's my company phone.
I did it. Viper rom installed. Was not too hard. Found a good video for it. Thanks for the help everyone.

The fun part is thanks to nandroid backups you can try out a ton of roms (I flash a new one every couple of days, now I'm back at dl18 playing the waiting game)
From what i've seen most roms share all of the major fixes and use similar tweaks and optimizations that they borrow from other devs... and the only notable difference i've seen between them is theme and how much they include in the rom extras wise (apps, live wallpapers, etc).
Viper rom has a lot of updates but I wasnt too much of a fan of the overall look of it
Mammons bonsai rom is lovely and I <3 it
Midnight Rom is excellent too and one of the best themes in my opinion, though if i remember correctly he does away with Twiz launcher and uses launcher pro(could be mistaken though i'm really tired and have used too many roms)
Epic Experience was the first rom that I flashed and works great, but I was mainly playing with the others lately since they have more frequent updates
Quantum Rom - daemon is brilliant and am looking forward to his next release
Supernova - I did try it out but I honestly don't remember what features it had
Nebula - Tried this out too, supposed to be more stable/straight forward rom for stable professional people who dont want inflated quadrant scores or flashy live wallpapers (I might be quoting a different rom, if so i apologize)
Syndicate Rom - Awesome as well but its not for dk28 xD
Overall all the roms are amazing the only differences REALLY notable to me is that some use AOSP lockscreen by default, some use TWiz lock/launcher, some use ADW... launcher pro... but all of that is changeable with a flashable zip/apk...I tend to prefer mammon and quantum rom nowadays since iirc mammon made the call log fix and gps fix and daemon is doing all this ext4/cwm work and they seem to be leading up the race with innovation and knowledge (not saying others arent knowledgeable... i know nothing of developing i'm just guessing here)
EDIT: forgot to mention, only reason im not on dk28 right now is that personally I have minor bugs with it such as the one where you call somebody and it doesnt ring or make any sound but it actually calls them, and some other minor issues. I figured i'd wait for official froyo to drop and continue testing out roms when I get bored
Oh and theres also cyanogen mod which is sexy and amazing but is prebeta and buggy (signal bars not working, MMS is broken, etc)
Although I agree that he could have been nicer about it, these posts absolutely do not belong in the development forum. Questions about "which rom is best for me?" Definitely belong in general. The reason some people (myself included) aren't often very nice about it is becase it is increasingly becoming a problem. The op really should take the time to read the stickies before cluttering up the dev forum. Everyone should.
Also, calling someone a jackass- even if they are being one- almost never shows them the error of their ways.

P.S If I do change rom's do I have to flash everytime and lose my apps and info? I save contacts on the SD card, but will stick with viper rom if I have to flash the phone for other roms. It get's kind of time consuming.

It is best to get titanium backup (from the market) that way u can back up your apps and you can use Backup to Gmail (also from the market) to backup contacts, call log, and messages. That makes flashing different roms a lot easier. (In my opinion)

Aside from titanium (which i never really used much, guess I should try it out as it can make backups every night while you sleep if you set it to)
You can also make a NANDroid backup via rom manager//clockwork mod which when you restore will restore everything down to cache to be the same. same texts in your inbox even xD.
EDIT: Also if you have your phone linked to a google account when you go through the setup wizard (on some roms) it auto downloads the apps you had installed before from the market as well as contacts, etc. But if you want an instant restore to the same settings/wifi/etc then I prefer nandroid (idk if titanium does all that I think it just backups apps)
also note that along with most roms you can customize them to your liking. you can change the boot animations (given they use a kernel that allows it... if the rom has a custom boot animation already it'd work by flashign one in CWM), theme, battery look, keyboard, launch options, lockscreen. You could always just get a not-flashy basic rom that incorporates the basic fixes that people want (faster gps lock/5mb mms/call log fix) and theme it all yourself in the themes and apps subforum. The gingerbread theme is nice and nova has a list of boot animations and battery mods in his supernova rom page :3. If you're interested in that I'd say go for epic experience as I'm partial to it and he includes an "extras" page with downloads to all that hes removed such as the live wallpapers, samsung widgets, etc.

tried the customs, but Stock seems to be working best.

Guess what. After trying about 10 custom roms (2.2 and 2.3) the past several months and experiencing various issues with each one of them, I tried stock rooted 2.2 and removed some annoying apps, and it is great. Everything works (4g, 3g...) Gmail works as promised (no mails stuck in outbox like I get with the most recent Fresh) signal is strong, the camera focuses properly, and the battery actually lasts LONGER than it does with CM7, SavageMod, Sprint Lovers, etc. I know the customs are all tweaked up, but the stock rooted is 0% slower in terms of everyday use. (I do not use test bench scores because they have little bearing on what the phone actually feels like to use.)
Stock is better in many ways than any of the customs I have tried. No joke.(Once some of the Sprint junk has been removed of course.)
Try it for yourself.
Just sayin'.

I personally am not a fan of Sense anymore after Salvage. It's basically pure Gingerbread 2.3 with no extra added junk EXCEPT 4G WiMax. Runs smooth as butter, and couldn't ask for anything else. Bugless too, not counting HDMI which no one uses...
Have you tried Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo? In my experience it is the most stable Sense rom, while also being extremely fast and great on battery life. I get anywhere from 30-16 hours depending on how much I use it and what I'm doing/how my reception is. Lots of eye candy too. Not sure what errors you have been encountering..but everything works as it should with Myn's. Have you tried custom kernels? Netarchy's kernel has given me the best battery life and performance, I have been using setcpu with the smartass governor. On a side note I have been using Salvage Mod since wimax was added and it's freaking awesome!

That alone tells me you have no idea what you are doing so why the heck would I take advice from you.
Stock evo really isn't all that bad. I would get a better optimized kernel instead of the stock kernel, but that's about it. I run EchoHD on mine for now, since I haven't had any issues with it with Revol, but I mess around with gingerbread and CM7 with it from time to time. CM7 I easily have nice battery life in, but I can't use it with my network sadly. =\
I was in the same situation ..... I think the problem is when You flash a new ROM you should give it some time to settle down. I use to install all the available MODS and themes plus 50 different apps right away ending up messing the whole system. Now I don't flash new fonts, tweaks, mods right away with a fresh ROM but then again it's just me, a novice user with very limited knowledge. I have been using FROST ROM for a month and it has been very stable ... although there are few new awesome looking ROMS just came out ( King's Ultra R2, Warm Z, Salvage MOD 1.0 etc ...) that are very tempting. I am to the verge of flashing a new one, it's just hard to pick one. After seeing all these insane ROMS who would go back to stock ... ! NOT ME.

^^Exactly This^^
My experience with Myns was ok - used it for about a month. But it had battery issues, and more importantly it would randomly lose 3g connectivity for maybe 30-60 seconds at a time. Same problem with Fresh. This is terribly annoying if you are browsing web pages. You end up clicking on a link 20 times trying to get it to load properly.
I was most recently using CM7 and it works well except the battery drain is just silly. And I know I am not the only one with battery drain on CM7.
The thing is, it seems there are always drawbacks with the customs. Some of the drawbacks are deal breakers like losing 3g, or botching the gmail app.
So while the developers are doing some awesome work (much appreciated!) when I step back a few paces, I realize that I have not gained much in real world usability, and I have often sacrificed stability or functionality for some minor gains which are often not noticeable without the use if benchmark tests.
I tend to agree with OP
I too have flashed many ROMS, and have also found best overall performance with a basically stock ROM. I say "basically stock," because I run RicSims 3.70 Turbo, which is supposedly mostly stock but with minor performance tweaks.
I run the stock HTC #15 Kernel included in ROM and, along with Seido 3500 Ext Batt, experience phenomenal battery life (see some of my other posts for results/screenshots).
I just recently tried a CM7 2.3 GB ROM w/ working WIMAX, and while everything worked perfectly (along with awesome Linpack and Quadrant scores), the battery life just wasn't there, so I went back to trusty Ricsims ROM (although I still have CM7 w/ WIMAX backed up via Nandroid, and can switch back and forth within 15 or 20 minutes, should I get the itch).

Honestly, "Mr. Yellow" has done what everyone else in this thread should have done, by kindly pointing out that the thread is okay, its great to share his experience, but he posted it in the wrong forum. So "Mr. Yellow" shouldn't be flamed. And if you flame the OP, you're honestly just as bad as to committing to this thread with nonsense.
Great statement OP regarding your set up, just please, next time, post threads of this manner in the general/q&a, as the development section is for developing roms, kernels and things of the such.
There has been talk of general about not allowing the creation of a thread in development if the person has less than 20 posts.
I believe this topic is proof that that will not work. I see what Mr. Yellow is saying. He makes a point. This should not have gone here. The OP mentioned no question was asked. But there was also no development. That's what General is for.
These topics piss people like me and Mr. Yellow off. This section gets cluttered with all this and it doesn't stop. It's getting old.

Most stable everyday ROM?

I don't know if this has been made before though i have seen "what is the best ROM".
Basically what i need is a nice and snappy rom for everyday use that won't kill the battery and won't kill all my ram like stock. Don't want this thread to turn into a war and be closed I just want useful answers Some roms i was looking at but haven't used are Paranoid and CyanogenMod 10

[Q] best rom for g2

So i just got the g2 about a week ago, coming from an iphone and getting back into android. I was curious what the most stable rom was for the g2 and which ones were good in your opinions. Also i have looked a little into rooting it but there seems to be more steps than i temember with my droid x2. Could someone post the steps or link me to a thread that thoroughly describes it, all help is appreciated, thanks friends

For what it's worth, I'm using Paranoid Android on the VS980 and its pretty great. Very vanilla right now, but I like it that way.
Also, put your armor on because that's just XDA's schtick. You'll usually get ridiculed before you are given a kind hand and pointed the right direction. It's a great place to find resources, but it can also be a nightmare to locate the people who aren't riding around the forum with their noses up.

Also, put your armor on because that's just XDA's schtick. You'll usually get ridiculed before you are given a kind hand and pointed the right direction. It's a great place to find resources, but it can also be a nightmare to locate the people who aren't riding around the forum with their noses up.

For the best stability a stock or LG Flex based rom is recommended
Also, by far the best kernel for this phone is Dorimanx' kernel (for stock and flex roms)
Recently, the developer of the most popular rom quit developing his rom further, but it's still the best in my book. If you want stability, simplicity and lightweight I'd definitely look at either Cloudyfa's Flex rom or just keeping it stock, rooting it, debloating it yourself and using some of the great Xposed modules that are available for the G2.
Thanks for the recent suggestions guys they've great. I have the g2 from Verizon so its the vs 980. Are the flex roms the ones that can be used on any of the models? I have just rooted my device so I'm looking into how to debloat. Ive usually preferred a rom over the stock. And as far as the different kernels go, im completely in the dark about them, I've never experimented with loading new ones on my phone. My game consist of just flashing the roms. With my droid x2 it had the removable sd card but with the g2 I'm a little confused on the route to take when flashing the rom itself
Just one advice.
use any stock ROM and avoid kitkat for now because they don't include native applications like quickremote.
I've tried many roms including kitkat roms and finally came back to a ROM based on stock firmware.
good luck.
We do not allow best ROM/Kernel threads on XDA. Depending on your use and your liking what is best for you may not be best for someone else and vice-versa. Head over to the development section try some out and see which "best" suits your needs.
