Using "fastboot oem unlock" only lets you unlock the boot loader, not root it. That's separate and that's what we need.
None of the one click rooters are going to work. If I remember correctly, one of the few changes in 2.2.1 was to block the exploit that allowed them to work. So surely 3.0 has these same changes.
Apparently Google is telling us that they don't really care that much if those of us who are knowledgable are rooting our phones and hacking them, but they don't want the general public being able to do so in one click from an app in the market.
I know the one click root apps don't work, but none are showing in the Market for me. Were they removed or are they being censored in some way?

I need your help to build Bell GB.

So since there isnt any canadian sbf. i need someone who is on the latest Bell software, to please unlock, and then root, and make me back ups of their current boot.img, system.img, and webtop.img. so i can use the available update and create a safe Bell GB 2.3.4 Fruit Cake.
If you are on Bell latest firmware.
Are unlocked with IHOP.
And are rooted. please post here or contact me in irc webchat.freenode.net #moto-irc
I`m rooted, on the bell 2.2.2 ota update rom... I have cwm4 installed and bootloader unlocked.. If you give me a quick rundown on how to get the images you need, i can do that for ya.

you can use either or, you just need adb
inside terminal/comand prompt
type adb shell
then you type su
and a pop up should apear in your phone, grant it access
then you type
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p11 of=/sdcard/boot.img

I have all those files backed up previously if you still need.
I am curious and this may be not completely appropriate but I wanted to clarify something.
My question or questions are:
If you unlock using the IHOP_Bell while on 2.2.2 and then SBF to 2.2.1 FR does this relock your phone?
Since users who OTA'd ATT 2.3.4 using pudding and then sbf'd to 1.8.3 or earlier had hard bricks because of the 2.3.4 ap20 bl does that mean Bell's 2.3.4 with an unlocked bl will not be able to flash back to earlier international versions aswell?

Mac one-click unlock and root guide?

There seem to be several one-click methods (though of course there's no real ONE-click method), but none of them work with a mac. I mean, Paul O'Brien's superboot method does (I think), but you need to unlock first and even just figuring out how to do that with a mac is a bit confusing. I'm not a developer but I'm pretty good at following directions when they're clear. So, if anyone has done the whole process using only a mac, I'd appreciate some info! Thanks in advance...

Which method? Using ADB? I'm still hoping for a mac-compatible one-click unlock/root method. I used ADB to unlock/root my G1 and G2 phones back in the day, but for some reason I'm hesitant with this Nexus - also because there are a few different methods out there and all seem slightly different and pointing to different files, etc., so I'm not sure which is up to date, etc.

Bought new Nexus7 should i update OTA?

I just bought a Nexus 7 today and as soon as I setup the wifi it's prompting me to update to Android 4.11, it has 4.1 on it at the moment. I want to root the tablet but having use the Android Gingerbread in the past it is a PITA to wait for new root after we updated OTA on our smartphone. Should i avoid any OTA update for the N7?

There's never a new way, it's always the same way. No update will "break" this.
fastboot oem unlock to unlock (this only have to be done once, it will remain unlocked unless you manually re-lock it)
fastboot flash recovery your.recovery.image (to flash a custom recovery)
Boot into recovery and apply the su zip of your choice if you merely want to root or if you want to flash a rom the rom of your choice (assuming these already reside on internal storage).

If you don't mind, I'd rather actually root my nexus s instead of my brand new bought nexus 7... I'm assuming it's almost the same guide to root both; just a different file; do you know of a guideline to root the nexus s on 4.1.1?

It is okay to use. BUT...it is always best to learn how to use adb. You know, just in case something ever goes wrong.
It is not like Apple's device, you will always be able to root and all, you dont have to be scared

[GUIDE][VIDEO][06th Jan 2012][4Noobs]Unlock The Xperia Play Bootloader Video

This is a video tutorial for my guide that can be found here, i felt it was best to make a new thread to keep the thread clean.
Text Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662199
OK so i was looking around for a easy to use guide i could refer someone to and couldn't find one so i decided to create 1.
With this method you wont need to download the android SDK and instead can download a small package of files that i will upload. this saves around 1-2GB of bandwidth.
Firstly we should confirm your phone can be unlocked. To check if your phone can be rooted (most likely if it is not branded to 3, Vodafone etc then it can be)
Go to the phone dialer
Tap*#*#7378423#*#* then a service menu should pop up,
Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. if it says boot loader unlock allowed then you are good to go.
if it says not allowed or no then you will need to pay to have the boot loader unlocked.
Now we need to get your IMEI to do this type in the dialer *#06# another window will appear with your IMEI number write this down somewhere as you will need it later.
OK so now that you know your phone BL can be unlocked we will need to download and extract these files

You have to install fastboot then: just download the ADT and install platform and platform-tools.
It will create a folder under C:\Programs\Android\AndroidSDK\platform-tools (don't remember id it's correct lol, it's been a while since I used fastboot lol).
There you'll find adb and fastboot (make sure you follow the instruction under Sony's development site to install drivers and unlock your bootloader).
