Hi All,
I just bought Samsung galaxy tab 10.1
The battery is low and when I connect it to the laptop I found a red X on the battery icon that is indicating it is not charging.
Any idea why is that?
Thanks,
Wael

If your willing to learn and root your device, the usb charging that you desire can be had by installing pershoot's custom kernel. I don't know if you have experience with other android devices but I suggest that you spend a few days or more reading and learning about rooting, custom ROM's and kernels, and your device. Much of what you need to know can be found in the sticky thread in the Development section of this forum. Good luck!

He is probably referring to this item, and yes it does work. It won't charge your device like a wall charger, but it will charge your device at a reasonable pace.

Voodoo already in Pershoot kernel
adb shell echo 1 > /sys/class/power_supply/battery/force_usb_charging
I had usb debugging mode turned on, and it charges
I don't use pershoot kernel, just whatever is comes with the overcome rom

I have My Tab plugged in to my PC all day while debugging on it as I develop, unfortunately the fact that the tab somehow and for some reason disables charging while debugging is causing a huge problem for my workflow.
Can anybody suggest a possible solution that will allow me to charge and debug at the same time. My boss may consider allowing me to root the device (I know it's easy, I could do it right now, but it's political) if I know it's the only option.
The power outlet of the USB port isn't enough to charge it, which is driving me nuts too.
If you root it you can use ADB wireless (free app on market) to use adb over the wifi, and have the tab plugged into the wall. Otherwise I don't know. Maybe a hub with it's own power supply **might** do it, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, I assumed it was a software check that it's connected in debug and simply disabled.
My boss has agreed to allow me to root it on the basis that I can restore it to factory if required.
Cool beans. Glad I could be of assistance.

I'm still surprised it's that much of a beast that it needs more power than the USB port can supply, I mean, is it all because of the screen?
The wall charger does 2A
But the specs aren't any higher than my HTC Desire except for the screen and that only needs 1A from the charger and can charge by USB too.
I genuinely have no idea. I'm given to understand that the Tab does charge from USB, albeit slowly. As for why it needs 2A, who knows. Maybe Samsung don't like us using other chargers.

Well my Tab doesn't charge from USB unless it's switched off. If it's on, the Battery symbol has a line throgh it, as in "charging disabled".
Yeah, mine does that too. I just use wireless ADB now, so much easier

I think you will find that even in those circumstances it is still actually charging, albeit very slowly.
I had my Tab hooked up to my PC last week and when I connected it up it was showing that it wasn't fully charged, and didn't appear to be charging. However, when I disconnected it some time later it appeared to be fully charged.
Perhaps it would be worthwhile downloading JuicePlotter to see what affect, it any, connecting the Tab to your USB port has.

Dave
It's not the specs of the device, it's the size and resistance of the battery. It charges slowly over USB, and it charges a much smaller percentage of the battery's capacity than it would with a smartphone.
Easy math, it's over 3x the capacity of your Desire battery, and as you well know, even your Desire battery charges slowly over USB compared to mains.
The larger backlight should consume about twice the voltage of a 3.7" display (rough estimate), so you're barely pushing any charge at all via USB when the display is on, a trickle of a trickle.

You're right, I probably should have looked into the rating of the Battery in this thing. As an Engineer, the math is trivial.
Still, It appears to me that it's not charging at all, not even trickle, from full charge when I left for work this morning to empty before the end of an 8 hour working day with it plugged in to usb the entire time, slightly disappointing result.
Just as a matter of interest, I installed JuicePlotter and attached my Tab to my laptop and adb'd into the Tab and left it for a while. JuicePlotter definitely shows the battery charge rising, but probably only in the region of 5-10% per hour.

Dave

This power thing is annoying. I bought a 1 amp car charger USB adapter when I got my HTC Desire as running my satnav software on it otherwise depleted the battery quickly. The 1 amp charger was enough to charge the phone while running the software.
However, if I use it with my Tab, rhe battery is still running down while using the satnav software, although slowly.
If I got a 2 amp car charger adapter, would that solve the problem? Can one buy 2 amp adapters for the car? I don't reallly want to buy the way overpriced Samsung car charger, which isn't even available yet.
EDIT: OK I've found 2 amp USB car chargers are available. Will 2 amp be enough to charge the Tab while running the satnav software?

I have never seen a 2A car charger but yes, that would do the trick if you found one. I assume Samsung's will be 2A, how much is it to be "overpriced"? A 2A Samsung official car charger is probably worth about £25 I'd say.
Hello all,
I just purchased an I.sound portable battery and was having trouble charging the galaxy tab 10.1.
The portable battery has the juice and amps to charge the tab but it always sees it as a usb device and a data connection.
Anybody got this combo to work or maybe have a pinout so I can play around with it a bit.
Thanks...

Yup. The Tab is looking for D+ and D- to be between 0.9 and 1.3 volts as its method of detecting an AC charger. The above adapter uses a bunch of resistors to generate this voltage regardless of which charging source the USB cable is connected to.
The other option is the "universal charging" adapter from the "make your own cableS" thread.
Thanks!
You two guys freakin rock. I just ordered me some. I'm back on track!

I went this route to charge from my battery pack and it works great.
I have a UK I9505 S4 rooted, but on stock kernel and rom.
I use the device in the car with a Pioneer AppRadio2 & ARLiberator that connects my phone via the Samsung MHL2.0 adapter.
The problem is that as the USB charge (2amp charge for AC simulation) goes through the MHL adapter the phone only ever sees it as USB charging and I cant charge the device faster than I drain it.
Does anyone know if any of the current kernels in development for the S4 have the Chad Froebel Fast Charging patch applied?
I would ask in the dev channel but forum restrictions say I cant as the right question in the right location because I am a new user *dumb*
not yet it's a new phone wait a month or 2 and this place would be full of wonderful choices
I have the same on my pc, the battery level even goes down if i play a game while connected to my pc. Not really related to this thread but just saying

that's because the phone is not charging fast enough on my s3 the charger is 1000mah while the usb charge is 475mah so fast charging made it go up to 900mah and ur problem is quite the same as him
Any news on this, sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but I am desperate for fast charge to be enabled when at work and I charge my phone whilst connected to my pc!

Thanks for letting me know I am running KT kernel now, my usb charge has increased from 450mah to 1000mah and charges quite quickly just via USB2.
The only down side of that is you have to disable fast charge in order to use file transfer or it as a modem
It works though, thank you again. Link here to anyone wanting it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379
I have finally switched the kernel on my UK Vodafone S4 to one that supports Fast Charge, the same one as above (Ktoonez).
I also switched to the wanamlite 1.4 rom for better all round performance!
In terms of charge rates I used a charge measure app to see what was going on and a standard USB delivered 450-470mA. When I plugged in my Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter to get HDMI out, that dropped to 300mA from the same source!
With fast charge enabled I can now get a full 1000mA with the MHL adapter plugged in, which was my main issue, so I am happy!
I just wish the Adam Kernel that comes with Wanam's roms supported fast charge switching as its an awesome kernel!
Hi All
I noticed that my charge time is very long even when i am on airplane mode ,, is there any way to enable fast charge or quick charge provided by qualc devices my device is (i9515 blackedition) rotted with stock firm ware and i know their is option called fast charge on note 4 so is their any option like that on s4 or even to enable quick charge 1.0 by qualc by using secret dialing code ... thanks in advance
I use two method to charge my phone
1 - Wireless Charging (Qi Charger not the original N4 charger)
2- via USB
On 1st when its fully charged the then the crazy battery drain starts. What is the point Wireless charging if I have to keep guard and disconnect while its fully charged ?
On2nd method I go to sleep shutting down PC while phone still connected. Same fate !
Im really helpless there. Anyone know what the heck is happening there ? It will be a huge help !
I found this app called safe charge as a work around
But seriously ? app for charging :/

plug it into a wall charger. you dont get as much/fast as a charge via usb nor wireless. an app running could be using as much or more voltage than is coming in. ive seen live wallpapers use more charge than being brought in via usb.

So, I have a macbook air with 2 usb 3.0 ports. But, when I plug in my normal 3.0 cable that I got with the note 3.. it most certainly does not charge as fast as it should.
It's charging very slow.. am I doing something wrong here? Anyone else?
I see that it says use as a media device (3.0 device) but it's greyed out and won't let me select it.

Hey. I have the exact same problem as you do. I just got my note 3 and plugged it into my 2013 macbook air. It wouldnt chsrge at all even though it says charging. So I just plugged it to thr wall and it took just a little over an hour to charge from 25 to 51%. Is this normal?
Sounds like it has something to do with the Darwin Kernel guys. Apple will probably have to do a patch to fix it.

Hm, well I noticed that if you go to Battery under Settings, it shows as Charging (USB) when plugged to the macbook. However, if you plug it using the wall outlet, it shows as Charging (AC).
Its either in the Kernel of the Macbook, or the Kernel of the GN3. If its the Macbook, well it will probably never happen. If its the GN3 kernel, you just have to be paitient and wait for custom recoveries so we can flash kernels and roms that support FastCharge on USB. USB 3.0 can supply the juice, it just has to be told to.

Think in milliamps yall... Your wall charger that came with the note is 2000mA... The usb3 port on your mac is 900mA... that won't even charge when the screen is on... just enough to keep it from draining... it will charge very slowly (less than half speed) if you power down the Note3.

That's correct, but newer Macbook Pro's have a neat feature. They can provide up to 1600 mA additional current (apple devices e.g. iPad), wich adds up to 2.1A. If there was just a way to disguise a Note as an iPad.

Yeah, but knowing apple its only for apple devices. Pretty sure it drops well below that for non-apple devices.
