I looked around for a few answers but sadly most postings with a similar question did not have replies...
I bought my dad an Optimus 7 a few months ago and on his current phone plan he doesn't pay for data so he relies a lot on wi-fi at home and his second home- Starbucks.
He claims after I forced the Mango update to his phone 2 weeks ago that he can no longer connect to free wi-fi at Starbucks yet when he goes home the phone has no issues connecting to wi-fi there instantly. He says it was fine before I updated. Mind you, he is the least tech saavy person I know. Perhaps he is missing a step. He says he goes to connect to Starbucks but no web brower page will open.
Does anyone know if this is an issue? I'm trying to avoid a trip to see him just to try to fix this.

Normally, the wifi at starbucks forces a browser login before internet access is allowed. Are you sure he is actually trying to pull up a page in IE before trying anything else, and not just trying to check email or using an app that pulls data?
Maybe Starbucks WiFi is only available to iThings users.
Starbucks in the UK works for me. In fact they're now offering it free without a Starbucks card.
As an earlier post says, you need to login first. If he's going to a https page, for some reason that doesn't work to redirect to the Starbucks login page. Best thing to do is have him go to Google or something. If you can go with him one time, pin / bookmark the login page.
Well I tried doing it myself on his phone. I can see the wi-fi connection listed. I hit connect. It begins to connect.. slowly then says it's connected. Moments later a webpage opens automatically which is the Starbucks page (where normally you would agreed to it's terms and conditions first).
Except it doesnt give you the option to accept and check the box. Instead its the Starbucks page with an error message on the bottom saying that it cannot connect basically and you can all a specific phone # to help. We called it and it takes you to Bell Canada tech support. We spoke to them about the problem and they said they provide the wi-fi service to Starbucks here I guess in Toronto.
They checked their connections apparently on their end, said they were fine and claim the issue to be our end with the phone.
Now here's the funny thing. We walked over to 2 other places nearby with free wi-fi and I could connect on his phone to both without an issue. We also connected to my wi-fi at my place. So it ONLY will not connect to Starbucks but appears to connect to other wi-fi spots.
This one stumps me for sure. But I know for a fact before Mango he could connect to Starbucks fine.

I've had this issue pretty much since I started using WM devices.
I'm on the AT&T network (HSDPA), but barely can connect to either my work, or home VPN servers. Usually, after setting up the phone and VPN connection for the first time, it will work. But after that, it'll take roughly 10 tries to get it to connect again. Even when it's connected, the connection will drop (w/o notification) within a few minutes.
VPN is important to me, since I often have to remote into home or work PCs to fix problems. I can usually get a RDP window up and running when I finally do get the VPN connection to establish, but I never have enough time to actually do anything... it dies so quickly.
I've been on the phone with AT&T numerous times on the issue. They've given me ISP.CINGULAR access, as well as a static IP for an extra $3 a month. It doesn't help, though.
Any suggestions?
**EDIT**
I did try searching for this, but didn't find anything helpful. I was limited to searching on each page, as "VPN" is too short a term to search for using the search function....
I had some issues with my internet connection, after the WM 6 update. When I updated my Radio Version the problem went away. You may need to update your ROM/Radio. Depending on which device you have, there may be many choices for you to do this.

I've tried more radios than I can shake a stick at. My IP is also not static, though AT&T is charging me $3 a month for that. Punks.
Which radio are you using now?
I'm bringing this thread back up, because I absolutely cannot figure out why VPN is so darn spotty.
On my current ROM (RomeOS 3.1), I can't even get VPN to connect at all. On the ROM I was using prior (Q-Mobile 1.2), it would show connected, but I couldn't get a RDP connection to an internal IP address. Within a minute or so, the VPN connection would just disappear.
This problem goes from ROM to ROM, so I'm wondering if something is wrong with my account at AT&T. Can anyone here use VPN reliably?? If so, what did you do to get there? It certainly does not work out of the box... I really need this for work.
so going to alaska to work for 3 months with my dad and brother. Brother says he cannot use his HTC HD2 up there with T-mobiles network so they will allow us to get unlock codes for them and then we will use AT&T's Unlimited talk and text but we would like to see if there is a way to use the Wifi on our phones to surf the web on either browsers. We would be doing small things like checking our email and bank accounts.
Any help would be appricatied

Absolutely, as long as you're within range of a wifi network that you have access to (i.e. one at your home/office or a public access point like starbucks, stc). You don't have to have a data plan to use the wifi, if that's what you're wondering
Another thing to remember if you have a nationwide plan with TMO using other towers is usually not a problem.
At home I use an AT&T tower about 30% of the time, I live in the boonies , so a nationwide plan has no roaming charges no matter who's tower you are using ...

haha I wish that it would even get a bit of service. Brother is already there and he says he can't even make a call without losing service. T-Mobile said they will suspend service for 3 months or how ever long it takes and will add it to our 2 year contract.
And so he trys using Wifi which the building he stays in has and when he goes into opera or internet explorer he gets an error, trying to find the error from him and will post. Does anybody know if their is settings that need to be changed. He is checking this by turning off the phone radio and only connecting to wifi. He does not want to be charged extra by AT&T, thanks for your help.
we do have custom roms on our HD2's. FYI
EDIT:Error for Opera Could not locate remote server

Sounds like the phone is not getting everything it needs from the access point, some type of misconfiguration, needs to make sure he is getting and IP address , gateway and DNS servers .... should browse over wifi without using the phone radio with no problem, do it all the time at home ...
But if you are just going to be web browsing, turning off the phone radio does save some battery ...

So I basically found out that the network adapters were set to manual config and I should set them to automatic. Which I did and was able to connect to recieve my mail and go on the web via wifi with radio turned off but this is at my home which is my belkin.
I then tried calling him and having him set it up (he's not so tech savy) and he was connected to linksys and it still gave him the errors, He is going to the office of the company he works for to see if he can get the password for the other wifi network that is on the list. He sees people on their laptops browsing internet. So maybe i'll just buy a little Netbook for going up there.
Thanks for all your help you guys.
so i've already posted a topic on my wifi not working at coffee shops or restaurants and i received some replies saying that i should do power cycle/flight mode, etc...
none of the options work for me.. and i've realized that it's not only the restaurants ,but it's everywhere...
my x10 works well with my home wifi router..but it doesn't work at
1) restaurant/coffee shop free internet
2) when my computer is made into hotspot using connectify
AND
3) my university wifi which doesn't need any wep password etc..
4) work wifi even though i had ssid, wep etc.etc.
the problem with my phone is that when connected it's supposed to take me to a page where i'm supposed to agree to some terms or sign in using my id/password (for univ)
but it just hangs and like 2 mins later says the page cannot be displayed..
now it's really really pissing me off because i thought this was supposed to be a smartphone and i cancelled my data plan because I was supposed to get internet 24/7 through school wifi!
but instead, i can't use my phone for anything other than just calling and texting.. it's no better than a regular phone.. just eats up more battery... etc..
i can't get any apps from the market, can't update any i've got already.. can't do anything with internet (cuz i'm not going back home for like another 4 mths)
i have a regular browser that came with x10... and i have 020 UK generic firmware installed on x10a
i really hope someone can help me out with my problem...
i was researching and.. it's different from eduroam stuff..
cuz my university network, coffee shop/restaurant networks.. they are ALL open network..
i read on sgs forum that fennec allows loading those pages (login/click terms of conditions.etc) but fennec can only be installed on 2.0 or more.. and x10's still at 1.6
so how do you all get your wifi??? i'm so mad with this phone
Every day I go to my local coffee shop. When I want to connect to the net, my Nexus shows wifi points available and I choose the appropriate one for the cafe. It doesn't need a password, but it does show a webpage where you have to agree to the terms by click the Ok button.
Is there anyway to automate this, or get around this? Its such a pain in the ass! I have Tasker if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
Jon
That is called a captive portal and no.
Or called a splash page. I worked for a hotel wifi company and we used devices called "nomadix." When you connect, the device gives you an IP, then sticks you in a pending stage until you click OK or Accept on the portal page. Until then, it won't let any IP based traffic through. Usually there's a timeout that they can modify. But being in a cafe, I highly doubt it. They're probably using a walmart bought wifi router with ddwrt firmware. I know starbucks has a splash page for their wifi.
Well, there is *sort* of a way around it, but not very convenient for cafes/etc. I am currently staying at a hotel that has said portal to access the WiFi network. What I have done is connected to said WiFi network with my laptop, then utilized "connectify" to re-transmit that authorized WiFi to me and my wife's devices. Basically turning my laptop into a wireless router. Another plus is that I can set my own WEP/WPA/etc protection to the retransmitted signal. So while this may not be a solution for cafes, etc - it certainly is a fantastic one for hotels!

I believe there are a few apps in the market which can automate this for some portals, but it's basically just scraping the page and trying to guess some information to put in, etc, so it won't work 100% of the time.
I haven't used any, so no specific suggestions, but here's a few from search:

i have this exact problem with the wifi in the pub i chef in. our broadband is provided by HEINEKEN beer. we also must connect then load browser window to accept terms.
the pub owner would also like it removed to allow people to auto-connect in the normal way because obviously when a customer steps outside for a ciggerette as it is illegal to smoke inside a public place in the uk now,. they would then need to keep re-connecting theyre phones/tablets...
ive managed to switch a total of 8 staff and about 25 customers to ditching ios for android there normaly at least 3 nexus 7's at any one time in my pub now :victory::victory: and our bar now also has nfc tags.
The app Wi-fi web login seems to be working for me.
I know some people only use Hotspot here and there or not at all, but I use HotSpot every day for my Android Car Tablet, so I noticed right away after taking the update that HotSpot stopped working. HotSpot is initiated and shows a WiFi HotSpot. Devices can connect to the WiFi Hotspot connection, but no data is transferred to/from the devices. Eventually my tablet will say "This Wifi has poor internet connection. Please connect to a different Wifi."
I've done research online and spoken to Verizon's Top Tier tech folk. There's not a fix, but a horrible workaround - You start hotspot, open it's settings, change the Name of your hotspot and the password, save it, then stop hotspot. Some say then power off/on your phone. Others say you can skip that step. At any rate after that the hotspot will work but likely only once or twice or maybe a few times, but eventually it'll stop working again.
The Verizon Tech gurus said the issue is on the hot list to get fixed because they have received numerous complaints, but it could be several weeks before an update that fixes the issue. Anyway, until there is a fix, if you use hotspot and haven't taken the update, you might want to wait.

Mine worked fine yesterday without any issue.
That is with VoLTE enabled.
Edit: Maybe not. I must have turned it off prior and forgotten about it.
Edit Edit: Interesting, now it doesn't work at all.
Dude, you jinxed me
Haha - nope, it was bound to happen. It's just sporadic as far as how long it takes before it stops working.
I was going to get around posting a thread about it.. but, I tried my hotspot the other day and it didn't work. Windows told me "limited connection".. which is usually DNS related, but even setting manual DNS servers, it didn't work.
Anyone try any 3rd party hotspot apps? I used to use OpenGarden, but haven't given it a shot yet.

Verizon can likely fix it on their end. Pretty sure its network related.
I am probably wrong though.
I have VoLTE on, and I used hotspot last night when Comcast crapped out on me, and again today at work without any problems.

mine also works fine with VOLTE on. I used it for hours over the weekend
