Anyone recommend premium navigation for the trusty hd

You do realize that you could write the complete title, as in, Premium Navigation.
There are people using the SEARCH of the forum, and with titles such as that, it defeats the entire purpose.
Anyhow, you're refering to programs like Navigon/nDrive/Sygic ?
Yep

I wouldn't really reccomend it. The DHD Can't really get a reliable GPS Signal without having mobile data on (Or at least in Sydney, Australia), and with mobile data, HTC Locations + Google Navigation is good enough, and free.
I actually prefer google navigation to the premium navigation feature on the Desire HD.
Google navigation is the bees knees i tell ya! Works perfectly for me. Why would anyone need an upgrade to it?

To be honest I would check your gps antenna.
If I go to France I do not have any data because of the roaming charges.
Yes it takes longer to get a fix, up to a minute, but the precision always stays below 15m in the car which is excellent.
In GPS test you can see the SNR (signal to noise ratio). Can you tell me which figures you get?

I accidentally invoked the trial period at a time when I had no trips planned. As such I could only test it locally for places I knew how to get to. Seemed ok though.
I paid for the lifetime license, based mainly on:
- The way it handles incoming calls.
- The maps being offline.
- Integration with Sense.
However, I do now regret rushing into buying this. It has not been great, and often I find myself having to revert to Google Maps Navigation instead. Problems I have experienced with the premium HTC Navigation include...
- Slow GPS fix (could do with something similar to Quick GPS on the HTC WinMo devices).
- Incorrectly identifying destination (hotel wasn't at indicated destination, and had to drive around unaided trying to find it).
- Destinations often not found (often put full postal address in contacts or calendar entries, but are not found by HTC Navigation. Google Maps usually doesn't have the same problem.)
- No option to choose an alternative route or add waypoints to force a new route.
I recently paid for the license. My DHD picks up GPS within secods.
I was worried because using google maps it took forever, but I did a soft refresh and after that gps works fine. Not sure if it was that or the fact I started using premium Nav.
I use it mainly for novelty value. All the voices are free so I like to try different languages.
I also find that the arrival time at destination is not as accurate as TomTom.
I like it better than googlemaps because of the natural voice and integration to HTC.

My biggest uses:
Find restaurants/activities near me to try new things (or in a new location)
Geo-caching - fun way to hike
Navigation - maps are dangerous and slow to use in a car, annoying to carry, and out of date depending on your source. Phones aren't the best for this but Android's Navigation is basically the cream of the crop.
Um if you dont know what good a gps is you really need to get into the tech. age.
I use it for EVERYTHING.
The real key is that I use google maps to look up anyone or anything around me. My friends all use latitude on weekend nights so we can find each other. If my gps doesn't show where I am how are friends supposed to find me?
I use it for pizza on a random night... or out on the boat when I'm going to a restaurant on the water.....or on a Friday afternoon when traffic is horrible and I want an alternate route.
There's plenty of reasons why the GPS NEEDS TO ACTUALLY WORK on this phone.
Well I'm not making an excuse for the gps problems I just have never needed gps is all
barely any of my friends have an android phone
Still stuck on blackberry and feature phones

I use GPS to navigate around unfamiliar locations. I cannot memorize the entirety of the planet's geography so I must rely on tools to bridge this particular shortcoming and I cannot safely read a map while driving.

Gosh. Where to start: Geocaching; geotagging photos ("the accident|family snapshot|scenery is right here"); tracking athletic runs (Cardio Trainer, etc); self-geocoding of addresses to avoid intellectual property issues with online geocoding sources; geocoding any physical object surveyed for a multitude of GIS applications and databases; "I am here" apps for emergency use; wardriving; geo-based social networking; geo-based shopping (Barcoder, Shop Savvy, etc.); calibrating speedometer and odometer; orienteering; mapping trails; tracking hikes and bike rides; of course, real-time vehicular navigation; recording and analyzing delivery routes ...
The list is really open-ended, and is expanding as democratized GIS, mapping, and GPS functionalities expand.
The integration of GPS with other technologies on the "phone" -- really a pocket computer that happens to make phone calls and is enhanced by cell-based GPS hybrid location and thus orders of magnitude more useful than a dedicated GPS receiver-- is what provides the power. I can be driving down the highway at lunch, speak "Taco Bell" into my phone, and it will find the closest choices with directions on a dynamic map.
This is why an accurate and functioning GPS is integral to Android smartphones. It enables things you didn't even conceive of, and services still being invented.
Geographically-based "to do" items, so the phone alerts you when you're getting off the freeway and reminds you to stop at the grocery store to buy toilet paper and cat food on the way home from work.
Location-aware ringer preferences. At the office, it turns down the ringer volume so half the floor doesn't hear the theme from The Great Giana Sisters (starting at 2:18) performed by Machinae Supremacy whenever somebody calls

Well then you need to expand your horizions Sometimes it's fun to go get lost and then of course have a nice gps to bring you home.
I use sprint nav when me and my friends get lost on a random night in the car or when we're driving with no where to go, I'll use sprint nav to get us to some random restaurant in another state or something.
I also use google maps to find trainstations nearby when I'm in some random part of the city. And when I went to my friends college 7 hours away, thebus had to make a random stop and I used it to figure out where I was.
Its also entertaining to ride a train and see a little blue arrow scrolling across the screen following your path with a Speedometer.
If you have intimateknowledge ofplaces bfore hand, then you have no reason for a gps considering you clearly don't care about the tecnology. This gps bug effects quite a few people adversely. I for one didn't realize how much I used gps until I upgraded from my hero

it maybe flakey, but the almost instant load is a cracking feature
Try clearing data, and redownloading the update again.
On another note, do try the latest version of Google Maps, with some of the labs addons (map downloads etc). Traffic updates work amazingly well with it, it's the best sat-nav I've ever had (apart from the fact that it doesn't know many one-way roads too well!)
It is not a good deal use HTC Location
It is not a good deal use HTC Location. If you plan to change you cell phone to a new one, don't buy any htc location license. The htc location license uses the cell phone IMEI. So, if you change your phone, you lose your licenses.
I talked with HTC about that... and they answered:
"If you changed to another phone, you need to buy the license again.. We are so sorry for your inconvenience. Actually there are some 3rd party GPS software on Android Market. You can have a look at them first."
Try using HTC Sync to update Locations to the latest map versions. Worked fine for me

For which country?
For example, in Russia or Ukraine there is Yandex.maps application with possibility to store maps locally on SD. But in Europe it is not so useful, very poor details.
Navfree or was it freenav. It uses openstreetmap and its free. Works okay, bot perfect but hey, its free
Motonav + most recent iGo maps.
I use it only for Western, central and eastern Europe.
waze
I live in Israel (where waze was first conceived & started few years ago
over the course of time it became the most popular nav app around here (for good reasons)
Only problem is - you need an install base in your area for some of its features to become effective - the more drivers using waze - the more traffic (and other) information the system has to provide you with.
In Israel its not a problem, its a small country as it is and as mentioned - everyone use waze already (there is literally no smartphone around here without it)
try it out in your area and see how it goes.

You could enable map caching on google maps then wait for it to load at home then leave Offline maps I used to use Copilot. Definitely one of the best. Otherwise Google Nav is the best navigation there is. Not many good free ones otherwise.
Hello guys,
I use navigon cracked version and it is a bomb, exellent graphics.
I'm using "Waze"
It's a free navigation app with a community who send informations for everyone (traffic, radar, accident, ...)

hello i use sygic , navigon ,earth and gps test+!
I trust more than any other the Navigon. it takes better routes than sygic or copilot.
Why dont you try iGO 8.4. I'm using it,its very very good, with mostly all maps (file with maps is 2.2 GB),if you want download link, send me pvt .
Igo 8.4 is very outdated although it is very good for moving from one point to another and I think it's the best for non Android system because they stopped supporting it.

What's the best offline GPS for your nexus 7 or what do you recommend?
I can't comment on the N7 specifically, although no reason it should be any different to any other android tablet, but i love maps with me pro. Works great, very detailed, and i like that you download entire countries, not just specific areas like some apps do.
I use Sygic and have been using it for the past 3 years since my HD2 days. It's very good.

I have both CoPilot Live Premium and Navigon (now owned by Garmin).I like and can recommend both.
I like the UI on CoPiolt better myself, but have had an occasion out two where it did not recognize the address but navigon did.
CoPilot does seem to be able to get louder with directions. I wish I could make Navigona little louder art times. TTS is good on both, with Navigon being a little more natural sounding to me.
I think CoPilot is the best bang for the buck. $9 vs $32 for Sygic or $40 for Navigon.

CoUplet live Premium is a great solution and has a nice interface, but like I said I've had it tell me I could not find an address on one occasion (maybe two), that Navigon found without issue. I don't normally use GPS navigation to know if this is a common issue. I hope it was a fluke, but it doesn't inspire confidence. Aside from that out has worked great for me, the four the piece it's really good.
If you just need it form time to time CoPilot is an affordable full-featured option. If your going to use it a lot and must have it work all the time Navigon might be worth it. That's just my general experience.
Google Maps Navigation is very good and fee. You can download Maps of areas you're going to be in to use offline.
Good luck...
UPDATE:
just after writing this I used Navigon to take me to a place a bit out in the "boon docks", and it took me to the street but not the house. Switched to CoPilot and out found the address. So, I guess neither is 100% perfect.

I agree. If I needed a full-time, offline navigation app, I'd probably spring a little more money for Navigon and Sygic. I use Google Maps and Waze most of the time so CoPilot suffices when I'm in areas with no signal.
I found Polaris Navigation works and has a lot of features.

Don't know about using an OTG for external storage. Each state will very in size, for obvious reasons, but the total size would be between 1.3 and 1.6 GB.

Sygic allows storage of maps on external SD cards on devices that use external SD cards. I have not tried USB otg to microsd card on the Nexus 7 specifically.
Map size depends on the State, ranging from 9-13 MB each for small States like Delaware, Maine, Washington D.C. to 104MB for Michigan, 117MB for Ohio, 161MB for New York, and 470MB for Canada. The good thing with Sygic, however, is that you can download the maps you need when you need them - no need to download all kinds of maps and carry them around in your device. So, with the Nexus 7 you don't need to use the USB otg - just download the maps you need when you need them and delete those you don't need. With my homenetwork, I can download Canada in less than 4 minutes (I live inCanada). I go toMichigan fairly frequently so I keep the Michigan map in my Nexus all the time. If I was going to another State I would download the map of the State and those of the in-between States (Sygic comes with a map downloader app) and get rid of them when I am done.
