Notification Bar Advertisements - Droid Incredible General

Just started noticing recently that i am getting ads on my notification bar..
Unacceptable!
After doing research I found an app called AirPush Detector that will find out which app is causing the Airpush notifications. Here is a screenshot of my culprit which is a shame because I really like Newegg..
Thought this might be useful info for some people.. post what apps caused your notification advertisements here so we can avoid them. I actually did a search for notification advertisements on here and came up with nothing. If there is already a thread for this I apologize.

Shazam... It'll add pictures to your photo gallery. I had to throw that one out unfortunately.
I think that if you have an app that you use often, and there is an ad-free version available, throw down for it. They're getting pretty relentless.

shazam isn't the same as what's being described here

He was talking about another app that pushes ads I think..

Good info. I've seen this before on a joke app but can't remember which one.
This just goes to show, stay with the good trusted well made apps.

Google removed 2 apps from phones.

These 2 test apps came from TippingPoint to show how easy it is to deliver an unsecure app to a phone. These apps are not dangerous.
Did they give you a refund?

I think the apps were for free. TippingPoint removed the apps already from the market but a lot of people installed these apps manually.

Interesting.. This, plus http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20008518-245.html
Both close on the heels of the ipony Fo Gee release. Coincidence?
Haha, that cnet article has been changed now. They found out it was fear-mongering by iPhone fans. For example, a contacts application needs access to your contacts. Sound the alarm, they are stealing my data!

Android Ads

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that adverts (as in advert supported games/apps) have become more agressive and intrusive recently?
very much so. the bars in ad supported apps are larger/brighter/flash faster they totally distract you from the app its self.
if the app's a good one I'll buy it and support the dev that way.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
That's fine, so do I but not all apps can be bought.
Yeh it is annoying, been using AdFree app, which helps to block a good few of them, but the advert bar is still present sometimes just blank on certain programs.
+1 on AdFree
I also use adfree so it "saves" bandwidth, if you're not on an unlimited plan it does help keep those KB's down. and you don't see those pesky adverts, blocks 100% of my adverts so far.

Ummm does this worry anyone else?

I've been up late tonight, and just so happened to stumble across this article over at AndroidPolice. Figured it might interest some people here since it includes our phone.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...e-numbers-gps-sms-emails-addresses-much-more/
Here's the thing, though. They recommend uninstalling the offending apk immediately, which I tried.....Unfortunately that gives me repeated force closes over and over and over while the system tries to run it, to the point where I had to restore to a backup. So what do we do about this?
UPDATE: You can remove HTCloggers.apk...all you have to do is restart afterwards.

Yes and no.
Yes because so many users run Sense.
No because I run AOSP.
Frankly, I wonder how many other serious flaws there are.
I can name several apps that want their hands on permissions they have no business in [Facebook for one]
Its like 1984 for sure. There's an article in the new section here at xda that talks about some of the other vulnerabilities as well.

Many devs remove these programs and such to remove ciq. I can't find the thread right now, but it reads just about everything. It's so deeply imbedded into the framework.
It reads every button you press on your keyboard.
Every text you send and receive.
Every app you use and download.
The pages you browse on using the internet browser.
It even goes as far to read any spot on your screen that you touch.
This is spyware to the extreme. Sprint and HTC will say its not "spyware" and say its used only for marketing to determine how phones are being used to further develop for the current trends in smartphones. It's very possible they could steal personal info with this. Is it currently happening? Uhh...probably not, but there will still be a lot of paranoia about it.

Sounds like a really good reason to stay with AOSP to me...

Some of us haven't forgotten the XCP rootkit that was on some Sony BMG titles in 2005... hope HTC doesnt suffer a similar demise like Sony eventually has of late.
This has been removed from MikG.
This is exactly why I'm AOSP. (that and sub-100MB ROM files)
I read the article too- (I have an Androidpolice/Android Central) feed in my Pulse reader....
I already knew CIQ and such were slimy embedded spyware...but the Treve app- spotted stuff I hadnt deleted already... Sprint sent me a "letter" about bandwidth usage and We-KNOW-what-Your-Doing" ----
I'm not amused by HTC/Sprint's collusion... leaving our bottoms out there in the cold for anyone to do whatever with.....
I bet even money my phones been cloned... sometimes I can't use it for calls .. recently -and I'd not had a single missed call or problem in a year.
I'm not a happy camper.. worried about my credit card #'s and really really am annoyed by HTC sliming us this way...
to the tune- that it'll be an icey cold day in hell before I'd consider buying another HTC phone for anyone in my family- (my family has 3 Evo 4g)...
We are not amused.....

AMEN
it appears to me that this file has already been removed from MikFroyo. At least, I can't find it...
BTW, you can just remove it using TIbackup, but you'll have to restart to get rid of the repeated force closes. Simple fix, and I've done the same for CarrierIQ as well.
It was removed from sprint lovers rom as well... I couldnt find it at least
I removed HtcLoggers.apk from mine and after rebooting (force close loop) it seems to be working fine. However, is there an old log file still on the phone that can be read by some Spyware app that needs to be removed or does all this data need to come from the logger app itself? If there still is a log, I'm sure it has enough info to still steal my ESN and other stuff.
Wow! Glad I run custom ROMS

Official Facebook App

I know a lot of people complain about the official Facebook app, slowing down their phone. I just wanted to inform people that that is not the case for me. Simply because I don't have an account or the app.
Onto more relevant stuff: Under the Hood: Dalvik patch for Facebook for Android and Koush does a quick explanation. For those that have the time and curiosity, read the comments on Koush's post. Very enlightening.
Quite an interesting read. Thanks for the links pons.
The slowness is also a reason I switched to the app tinfoil.

I tried atrium, it was supposedly the top alternative in an article I read but was an immediate failure because it couldn't find a friend.
I would certainly like to know exactly what purpose the face book app has taking up 17mb on my precious dinc fresh off the market. I've seen it swell in excess of 40 mb with heavy use. Get outta here! It seems completely absurd and a bit arrogant of the Facebook corporation to clog up everyone's devices and hide god knows what kind of unpublished ill will in the code.
I wish someone would reverse engineer or whatever so we know why it is so big.

Exactly, I uninstalled it and now I use greenify to free up ram. I'm still looking for a viable upgrade to the DInc. :/
DNA is locked, s4 doesnt have much development going on, s3 is old hardware, htc one has no menu button, removable battery, OR sdcard...I wish verizon would have gotten the nexus 4. :crying:

Built in system app advertisements

Samsung say they do not put advertisements in their pre installed apps.
However, example the weather app does infact have advertisements.
This was on my S10 Plus and Now On S20U-Exynos
Its also present on both family members S20Plus and A50
So they are lying when they say they don't include advertisements on pr installed apps
Their response you posted is BS.
I watched a Korean tech channel and they complained about it and noted it's a recent thing.
Koreans also get adds in the built in text app too.
Funny thing now is that they said this is the third party weather channel app.
But infact their app just gets info as its source from the weather channel.
I sent back this and told them that the app package is
Com.sec.android.deamonapp
Unbelievable.
Oh yes, it's definitely Samsung doing this.
Could be worse, but 100% could be better.

Funny thing is All my personalisation and Google ads are off anyway. Yet still the ads keep coming up. Ive had them switched off for at least a year.
Samsung reckon this stops ads but no it makes no difference.
The Moment I see an ad from Samsung on my Smart Devices, I will stop buying and advocating Samsung Devices.
Just to make this clear to Samsung, I will give them back and have them refund me for every device I have from them which is starting to show ads. I am willing to go the legal route for that.
Then, I can go ahead and buy Chinese crap phones (regarding privacy policies, I mean) like one plus, xiaomi, realme, oppo etc.. Or switch to the boring side (appl).
They seem to keep coming back with a ridiculous load waffle not pertaining to the complaints or even looked at the screenshots sent.
But there is definitely advertisements on the weather app on 3 current devices in my family plus was also on S10 Plus i recently sold.
I wonder if an XDA Member could pull apart the coding on the weather app and see where the advertisements are coming from? Maybe as the source for weather is the weather channel it is part of a deal to include advertisements from weather channel websites.
This morning it appears in the middle of the weather app and at the bottom.
But who knows if this is just the first of many apps that are starting to push advertisements.

Hmmm... I looked and saw no ads. I do remember points in time that I have seen ads in the weather app but only to disappear at a later time. I almost want to say my Note 9? But yeah, I have seen this before. I think what I saw may have been a test. I don't have them on my S20U (at this time).

When i checked the weather app this morning for around 20 seconds it wasn't there, i almost got excited and then it just materialised above the radar image, then i scrolled to the bottom and boom that appeared too.
The best bit is they aren't even targeted ads, one was ribs and burgers. That restaurant just doesn't exist within 1000kms of my location. Im not sure if its even Australian.
You recently flashed the PHN update to your phone right? And I'm on BTU.
I wonder if that's part on the problem?
I can tell you that Samsung Korea has told customers that the ads now showing in the weather app there is from the company providing the weather service for Korea (not the same company as we get).

If it was just my phone & previously S10 Plus i would be agreeing with you that flashing could be the problem.
But my partner and my daughter A50 & S20 plus both have the same issues and they are on stock unflashed updates from Optus and the weather app has ads in both phone's.
I guess it probably comes from the weather channel but, you can never be sure what samsung are upto.
They must have some dealings with Facebook to have this as a pre installed app along with the other Facebook apps which I removed and makes no issues with the actual app. So what they were needed for is another question.

Here is an idea... Check to see if the weather app was recently updated. Maybe you can revert to an older version on the system partition.
Otherwise there is another simple fix for this... You can change your DNS settings. Honestly, if you have not done that its a great way to block all adds, system wide, without root or any special app or VPN. Change dns to dns.adguard.com The DNS settings are in connections settings menu then I think advanced. I would also clear data on weather app. This will force it download new ads but it wont be able to.
So yeah, it sucks Samsung did this but you can get around it quite easily.

I have actually been running disconnect pro for samsung for about 3 weeks, which must ne working as it blocks advertisements in apkmirror and 9news app.
I was using dns.adguard.com on my S10 Plus for a while but what i found was happening with this, any inbedded videos from YouTube or news article videos it would also block them or ask me to login then do nothing. Which was a little annoying.
The weather app did infact update in the last week or so. But thats not the issue because they were still advertisements previously to the update and on other devices.
Unless theres something sneaky in my isp modem pushing advertisements over wifi, I'll have to switch to 4G see if ads persist.
Ok and heres the odd thing
I just
cleared weather app data and cache
Added dns adbock
Disconnect for Samsung Pro
And restart weather app, boom new advertisements
How is that possible? 2 ad block running?
The 9news app advertisements are greyed out.
Yep, still getting ads on the weather app.
That's okay, bye bye samsung weather app, hello Google weather widget.
Gutted that Shifty Jelly stopped working on their awesome weather app.

Yep going to remove with adb and i have two apps i tried once weather mate (M8) and Clyma weather. I might use one of them and check its performance / Battery & Data Consumption.
Just pray they don't start adding advertisements to anything else. Premium Phones shouldn't be bombarded with bloatware and crap.
Wow, I just purchased my S20U for $2000AUD yesterday. I just checked my weather app, and low and behold. Not happy considering it cost me 2k.
