[Q] Attaching a flash drive to Kin Onem - KIN One and Two General

I am wondering if it would be possible to attach a flash drive to a kin onem using a microUSB to standard female USB adapter. I was thinking of buying one but thought i would ask here before blowing the 3 bucks because i doubt it will work. Would the software somehow support the mass storage device?

DOubtful
I highly doubt this will actually work. The most practical way would just to be to take the files off the phone via computer and and transfer from there. But you can go ahead and try this if you want; it's only three dollars anyway. It could come in handy in some other place, too.

usb on-the-go

hey,
my old mp3-player (iriver h340) had a function called "usb otg".
with that i could plug usb-sticks, -harddrives or even my friends
mp3-player to my device and copy files from one device to the
other. without the need of a pc.
now i wonder if this would be possible with a htc (i´m writing in
here, cause blkstn is my favored choice) and wm.
do you know anything about it?
thx
kws
it's a hardware protocol, I think we would have heard if it was built in. I've been wanting htc to put this in their phones since I first got my typhoon. but fortunately the transflash chips are getting dirt cheap, so it's no biggie these days.
You are refering to USB Host mode, where a device can host another USB one. Touch HD does not have this mode, but on the Diamond there was talk about a USB trigger mode. Maybe you want to give it a test drive:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=USB_Trigger_Mode
yeah, usb-host. thats what i ment.
thx for the link...
flash-cards are really cheap. but still i cant put all my media on it. well, thats
not always necessary but it would be handy to have to carry just your 2.5"
250gb drive and have all your stuff with you... and accecible without a laptop.
however. was just curious...

Modded USB Flash Drive

O.K. this one is for all you hardware junkies out there!
I've searched a bit online but couldn't find anything helpful. I'm looking to mod my USB drive so that it plugs directly into the bottom of the phone.
"Why not use your SD card?" you may ask. To which I reply "why take the back cover off?"
If anyone has any idea how to accomplish this or if anyone can direct me to a wiring diagram, it'd be much appreciated.
*side note - would WM identify it?
Found this link, but still dont know the woring diagram of the HTC adapter. http://interface.centraltreasure.com/pc-interface-knowledge/usbwiringdiagram/
The phone does not work that way. To be able to access a flash drive it would need to support usb mass storage from the usb port (which it doesn't) and have drivers for the flash drive (which it does not have either).
I hate to burst your bubble, but just because it has a USB port, does not mean you can plug anything into it and have it work (or re-wire a connector and have it work). If it worked like that, we wouldn't need to buy memory cards for point-and-shoot cameras and instead just plug in a 500 GB external hard drive.

USB hosting ENABLED on XOOM!

While I know that honeycomb does not support this yet (but likely will with the sd card upgrade), there have been rumors that the micro USB slot on the XOOM is actually capable of hosting.
Does anyone know this for sure?
Basically, im trying to decide between the XOOM and the unamed Toshiba tablet.
I like that the Toshiba tablet has Hosting with a full usb port, and Im wondering if the XOOM will be able to do the same (albeit with an adapter).
Though, I dont even know if The toshiba tablet will release in the US any time soon.
ALL THANKS TO ROEBEET WHO HAS ENABLED HOSTING OF THUMB STICKS ON THE XOOM! - scroll through this conversation to get to roebeets post!

Look down the page a bit for ...
Note: Optical drive not included
Compatible with optional external recordable CD/DVD drives (not included).
This would imply it does.
Yes, it most definitely will have that capability. Please see the thread here that I started a while back on the Moto Owners Forum, where I was able to get not only Moto reps to confirm this, but also was fortunate enough to get the actual Moto tech who worked on the Xoom's USB to chime in with some info. My guess is, the same software update that will enable the microSD card will also enable the USB host capabilities of the micro USB port (both external data storage).
The USB hosting being locked down software wise, at least initially, is being done to get some quick cash on their accessories. The unlock that they MIGHT provide later would allow 3rd party keyboards and other accessories access to the Xoom.
I really doubt that they will do a software lock later but the fact that it is software locked and not hardware means that someone here in XDA will be able to unlock it for us eventually.
how hard would it have been to put a full sized USB. Seriously.

It would make the tablet thicker. micro USB is fine since most of us already have tons of those cables.

look at the thickness of Notion Ink Adam becuase of 2 USB adapters
I did a bit of research on this.
So it appears the same situation exists for the dell streak. It also has USB host like motorola (confirmed by moto engineer).
Some guy here: http://linuxslate.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1286562168
Shows how to get USB drives mounted and usable on dell streak running android 2.1 - this appears not to work on android 2.2 and higher.
OF NOTE: with the right cable (apparently some exist that support OTG hosting capabilities) and the right developer - we can absolutely get USB hosting onto the xoom.
Likely, a couple of scenarios exist to getting this working. First, we wait for the microsdcard update for the xoom - which may make it easier to host from the USB port; Second - we wait for a smart developer to port this sort of code into and app or custom rom; Third - we wait for the toshiba tablet to come out (as it has a full USB port for host) and steal its rom and port it to the Xoom.
I have a Nokia OTG cable that I misakenly bought for an Archos 32 (didn't work), and I tried it on my Xoom. I can use a USB keyboard with it, FYI. But a USB mouse I tested does not work.
USB thumb drives may not work as there's no mount point - I might try to create a custom boot.img and test that out, if I have time.
This is the cable I have: http://cgi.ebay.com/Micro-USB-Host-...314427?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3a640778bb

Thanks for the post Roebeet;
This sounds excellent - im happy that xoom has the ability to host - that was the last piece of the puzzle for me - cant wait for the custom roms that implement this ability!
USB thumb drive confirmed working
Needed to make a boot.img change, however. I'm going to write up a HOWTO, shortly.

Can't even get a mouse to work with BlueTooth, so that's probably why a USB mouse doesn't work...
USB thumb drive instructions (with altered boot.img link)
Dropped the instructions here: http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php...le-usb-host-mode-ie-thumb-drives-on-the-xoom/
I have this running on my Xoom right now - thumb drive can see files and play content (like music and video).
Awesome! Time to order an OTG cable

That eBay guy is going to wonder why the sudden surge of cable orders, soon.
It's coming from Hong Kong, but I think I got mine in less than 2 weeks - this was back in November. I had ordered this cable with an Archos 32 in mind, but I screwed up the first time and got the wrong cable. I'm happy to report that it's finally getting some use.

You are AWESOME.
Hey roebeet, Quick question:
Does this allow you to transfer or write files to the USB drive as well? Or will we have to wait for honeycomb to support sd cards to do this?
Can files be written onto the thumb drive or moved there using a file explorer?
Just wondering!
anyway to translate this mod to getting the micro SD slot working

It doesn't look like it's mounted read-only so I'd say yes.

[Q] Droid X USB host?

I did some searching (google/xda) to see if anyone has found how to host usb on DX.
Im guessing this is a pipe dream unless we can get at the kernel.
Or moto implemented it and we just dont know how to use it, somewhat like the Milestone hack.
Any thoughts? Comments?
i was wondering the same thing.
the reason is cuz i am in the market to buy a microsd card, and wanted a 32gb one. the problem is that theyre so expensive, and there are so many fake ones out there. it's hard to know what's a real card and what's a fake.
so i thought, what if i can just store my music/movies on a thumb drive (which is cheap, and i already carry them around anyway), and just use a male micro usb to female usb cable and then attach a thumb drive to the end of that. then my android phone can access the music from the thumb drive, and play music/movies.
this way, i can just use the thumb drives i already have, and i would only need to buy a cheap cable. would this work? or is buying a microsd card the only way to go?
i saw some hack where the guy soldered some stuff together, but it's a bit too involved for me...just thought there might be an app or something for it.
Last I heard: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786292
Really though, its going to likely take a way to load a custom kernel to even try, which is very tough with a locked boot loader.

[Q] Using desktop/Laptop as a USB drive for Update

This is kind of a question and also kind of a suggestion.
I have seen a lot of info in the forums about using USB Host cables to update xooms, but I have heard no mention of using your PC as a USB drive for the update. I am sure there is probably a good reason for this, but I thought I would ask anyways and see what the response was.
Is it possible to mount your PC hard disk, or possibly a USB drive that is plugged into another port, on the xoom and place the update file there? I tried Googling some info on doing this but was not sure what I should be looking for.
You could put a mac in "drive" mode and do this... in fact, I'm going to try it now... thanks for the idea!
* edit: since my mac drive is hfs, I'm betting it won't be readable by the xoom.... do I care enough to repartition a small section to make it FAT32? nah.
No this won't work for a variety of reasons. Honestly the crazy ideas people come up with just to avoid rooting.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Well I would root, but I use my xoom in such a manor that I am not willing to risk having it out of commission for a few days, if something was to go wrong.
I think using a USB hub would work. Haven't tried though. But the principal is you have your xoom usb cord and plug it into the hub. Then plug your FAT32 USB into the hub. Now they are linked together. Hubs are cheap and can get them anywhere and most likely you have one and its worth a try. Let me know if it works.

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't work because you have to boot your xoom from the usb device you are using, basically like way back when, when you use to have to shove a floppy into a computer before starting it to redo some of its bios work. You're basically trying to load an "os" like file from your external harddrive (well a flash drive really) and pluging the Xoom into your computer is a whole other concept.
