[Q] Custom ROM and No Data Plan - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so I've looked everywhere and cant find my answer anywhere. I want to install a custom ROM (specifically royalginger 2.0) and don't have a data plan. The guy I got it from activated it with his SIM and then I just put mine in and it worked. I don't mind rooting.
I'm stuck on android 2.2.1 and want 2.3.4 with the new version of HTC sense (arching buttons on bottom, cube like app menu) and I only have a 2gb SD card which I'm willing to wipe. My question is, if I install the custom ROM, will I need to activate the phone again? I have no data plan so I can't do this. Or does the custom ROM have the option to activate over WiFi?
Also, what are my chances of pricking it?

Then You cant use Aosp roms
The aosp roms (plain Google roms like royalginger or cyanogenmod) dont support WiFi support.
Your going to have to use the newer sense roms which have an option for using WiFi to activate..... I prefer TDJ RCMix3D Runny v1.5.0 MT4G:: [SENSE 3.5]

AOSP ROMs such as Cyanogen(mod) do Support Logging into your Google account over Wi-Fi. Why do you think CM is so popular on the Nook color? and it has no HSPA(+),EVDO, Wi-Max or LTE Support. In fact, i just tethered my Nook to my Glacier to activate my account on it.

So if I do the virtuous unity, I can do the activation again without a data plan? Also, can it be done with only a 2gb SD card?

The Os will be written to the emmc and pulled off of the sdcard so yes?
And yes you can sign into your account via wifi and use that strictly. Just make sure to remove the apns and turn off auto sync and data to keep it from connecting to the servers of the cell phone provider

And can anyone link me to where I can learn how to root my4g? I heard that its one of the harder phones and I really can't risk bricking it

Okay, It got a little sketchy and I used gfree for s=off and then got perm root from visionary.
Umm, so the Rom I decided on was virtuous unity 2.37.0 because from what I read thr latest was too buggy and kept crashing
Good choice?

Can someone give me pointers on putting the Rom on my phone? Or link me?

You should have a Permanent root, Latest Rom Manager & ClockworkMod Recovery Installed. I also recommend you to update your BusyBox.
Click to download Virtuous Unity 2.37 or Virtuous Unity 2.39 Rom.
Procedure
1. Download the Virtuous Unity Rom.
2. Do a Nandroid backup.
3. Make a Full Wipe (data & dalvik).
4. Reboot to Recovery & Flash the Rom.
Now reboot & enjoy the new Rom......

I have a problem, my bootloader says
00.85.2007? My understanding is that its supposed to be 00.85.000? Or is this nothing?
Also, in clockworkmod recovery, whenever I clock something, it just has a thing with an arrow that goes around it. I left it running for 7 hours and it still was doing it so I pulled the battery.
Anyone help? The phones on and running again

The original bootloader is 0.86.0000
The Rom you used to update might be something different....

Haven't installed the Rom yet, this is after root. I ended up having to use the gfree method to get s=off and VISIONary+ r14 to get permanent root.
And yeah, I know its 00.86.0000, wrong button
But it says my hboot is 00.85.2007
When I did the gfree, looking at directions from another site it said to use the command "./gfree" as the last command which I did, but another site says its "./gfree -f"??
Can I still flash the new ROM with the 00.85.2007 bootloader? I DO have root, and I DO have s=off
Edit: I'm also currently still on 2.2.1, no OTA update and this ROM looks awesome

If this is the case, you can flash any rom via CWM recovery.

Is this for people who have flashed ClockworkMod 3 already?
Will I see this? I have ROM Manager v3.0.0.7 w/ ClockworkMod 2.5.1.3 currently.

Ah alright so now when I get it that should allow me to install Cyanogenmod 7 then right since clockwork 3 supports ext4? I didn't do the ENG-Hboot though. I'm assuming that could prevent me from doing any Gingerbread ROM?

Ganii ran a test with it said he could flash between 2.2 and 2.3 with no problems plus he was able to do nandriods of both and restore them, so sounds like it is universal for all roms 2.2 and 2.3.

Yes,seems to be no problems there.
Come from CM7 Nightly,then I did a wipe data/factory reset.
Installed now CM 6.1.1 Froyo 2.2 ROM,works.
Did a nandroid backup,works.
Then tried to restore,works too
CWM 3.0.0.5 seems to work now with 2.2 ROMs too
i was on the 2.xxx recovery in rom manager and it prompted me to flash new recovery of 3.0.0.5. so I dont think its for people who already have 3.0.0.5
I had 3.0.0.5 already and yes it did promt me to update to 3.0.0.5 because proir to this everyones recovery in rom manager said 2.5.1.3 even if they were on 3.0.0.5, so this is for everyone.

Can`t restore 2.2 ROMs with this,so the recovery 3.0.0.5 which
you can download now via ROM Manager is newer.
Updated fine, just want to know do I have to partition my sd card

[Q] unrEVOked 3 root

Does anyone know when unrEVOked will be able to find a root for the Wildfire on 2.2.1? I hope they find it soon. From how much they've been delaying it seems like they just don't want to even try. Should I disable the Search online for updates feature so my phone stops updating?
* They will release it when they want to. We have no option or control over them. If they want to try, it is their wish, if they don't want to try, again it is their wish. Live with it.
* If you are already on 2.2.1, there's no point disabling search for updates because it is extremely unlikely there will be any.
*Sigh*, why cant you read already existing threads before creating another one? Is it too hard?
omfg! seems like you have disabled search function for this forum, this topic gets posted at least once a day

If I understood what you said, then I dont think you have installed the official 2.2.1 update. I cant see that anywhere in your post. (Saying you applied the official 2.2.1 update).
When you went back to the Stock ROM, it was still at 2.1, which is why the HBOOT was still at 0.80. To install the official update, from the Stock ROM, you would have to accept the OTA Update, and then install it, which I don't think you did.

this is the rom i used to get the 2.2 upgrade http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LF2TWEHJ
But isn't it possible to modify oryginal rom from HTC to downgrade HBOOT , and then make Wildfire rootable? Or make some crash in HBOOT witch will allow to root? That's a lot of ways, is it possible that HTC make Wildfire really unrootable on 2,2,1? That they make unlockable bootloader? Like a motorola?

[Q] Clcokwork Recovery Help

I rooted my phone successfully and installed clockwork recovery ROM manager 3.0.0.5, and have been running gingerbread since, However I miss Sense UI sometimes.
Now I am trying to go back to carrier 2.2.1 (stock tmobile mytouch 4g) , but am having no luck finding the correct ROM. All I have seen on the internet is the pre OTA rom 2.2 , but I wanna go back to 2.2.1 (just the way I got it, because I fear that I won't get the OTA to 2.2.1 because of the 3rd party ROM Manager) .
So here is a breakdown :
This is what I am looking for
A 2.2.1 tmobile mytouch 4g ROM
I understand that flashing this Rom will un-root the phone.
Here is something I have confusion about (which was largely cleared by article "[MOD] EZ Clockwork 3.0.0.6 Install>>Newest CwM Recovery and Stock Recovery included")
Will I be able to get Tmobile's OTA upgrade when gingerbread 2.3 comes out ? even with the 3rd party rom manager installed, is there a way to go back to the original tmobile rom manager, I should have done my research in the beginning, I do not even know what it is called?
Please help
Well first of all I have to ask why do you want to go back to stock? Are you aware of Ice Glacier? Its clean stable and runs better out of the box.
Now if you want Ice Glacier then go down to Dev section and download v1.1.6 and give it a try. Taking it that you didn't use it but if you have and you would still like to go back to stock then go to Dev section and find the stock PD15IMG as it will revert you back to stock rom and radio along will disable s-off. As I am on MT4G I can't link it but the thread is by football just go to the end page and download it from the link I posted which can be found on Phatless's sig. Keep in mind it's same thing but the link posted in OP is unstable as it takes forever to download.
If you don't know how to use it then ill tell you anyways just download the PD15IMG.zip and put it in root of your SDCard and then go in to bootloader and follow the screen, keep in mind this is not done though recovery.

Did you do a nandroid backup of your phone prior to flashing CM7?
If you did you can flash the 3.0.0.6 Recovery image or use True_Blues .ZIP
If you did just flash back to the supplied ROM when u bought the phone.
With recovery 3.0.0.6 you can flash back to your stock sense ROM and keep the rooted end of things.
If you do go back to 100% stock and flash the PD15IMG you will go back to 100% stock in every way fit form and function. And yes you will get T-Mobiles 2.3 update when and if they decided to come out with it.
Even if you do keep root access T-Mobile will try to push the new OS to your phone. but i would HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest either going back to stock prior to accepting the OTA. Or keep your Root status and use a variant of their ROM.

No Sir, I do not know what this is , the only thing I have tried so far is CM7, I would love to try Ice Glacier today.
Is it Gingerbread or is it Froyo ? Does it work with clockwork recovery Mod 3.0.0.6 ?

Iced Glacier is 2.2.1 (FroYo) based ROM that based off the OE from T-Mobile. Personally i am a AOSP fan. Regardless of 2.2 or 2.3, and do not like the bloat that comes with Sense.... .But i've heard alot of GOOD reviews regarding I/G. I'd recommend flashing the 3.0.0.6 then giving it a run.
Sorry was away but to add to what neidlinger said as he covered most of it. IG is based on stock but with few things added and removed thus balancing stability and performance. I think you will enjoy it also it has built in OC kernel (Gorilla v0.5 @ 1.7ghz). And no it does not matter what rom you had installed but I highly recommend you do full total wipe and then flash the rom via newest CWM so you can swtich between 2.X and 3.X based roms.

Thank you! I am done flashing and now it is stuck in the ANDROID screen with the light at the bottom going left to right.... is this normal for it to hang on for so liong its been about 2 minutes?
Oops I am so impateint, but I am a noob and it freaking scres me because I have read about "bricked phones too many times", but now I am in and am setting up the phone. Looks like Iced Glacier will do just fine for me, I think I am however going to miss the android 2.3's battery life (vanilla install CM7) .. and surprisingly I also miss the gingerbread keyboard already, I am ready to download it from the market.
Thank a bunch to both of you.
What is AOSP? do you mean vanilla Android?

AOSP = Android Open Source Project. It's as basic Android as one can get. Sense is nice. But i don't use Facebook or Twitter (anymore) so i have no need for the added bloat.
Lol believe it or not IG has the most and I do mean most stable and efficient power consumption than CM7 once you set it up correctly. Play with it and add things to it as most of the apps you can install on it as you had on CM7. Far as AOSP goes you been using it on CM7(ASOP2.3.2:GB) as neid said what it means.

[Q] Cannot root phone due to newer version of Hboot (.86)

Awhile ago i tried rooting my phone with a tutorial from The Unlockr and it went well except i could get S to turn off and it would not perma root. Does anyone know of a tutorial for the newest version of Hboot that can root the phone? I found a tutorial that works with the G2 and Desire Z without ADB but i am not sure if it will work with the Mytouch 4g.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section and thanks in advance.
I see that you're new here. Please use the search function, this has been discussed a thousand times before.
HBoot 0.86.0000 is the bootloader that comes shipped with all Glaciers. It is NOT new and DOES NOT prevent you from rooting. The engineering bootloader (0.85.2007) is obtained either by flashing it manually or by using the root.sh method to root your phone, such as by following the instructions on theunlockr.com. If you ask most people, they'll recommend using the gfree method that is stickied in the development subforum for this device.
Well when i tried to root my phone the Hboot version in the tutorial was .84 and i realized that after i tried it again because i made a mistake but i did get it rooted but S was not turned off when it should have been and when i rebooted the phone was not rooted anymore and it ran terribly slow. Is there a way to sort of create an image of my phone so if anything goes wrong i just load it and my phone goes back to the way it was with all of the apps and such?

Not until you're rooted and have installed a custom recovery. Then you can make a Nandroid backup.

The backup will allow you to return your phone to stock state in every way except for root. You'll have follow a separate procedure to unroot your phone.

fantastic, can someone please link me to a tutorial that will work for me? Also what ROM would you guys suggest? I am looking to keep the phone's functions but I want something that will make the phone faster.

Give those a read-through. I've never done them myself, but I'm pretty sure you don't use a backup to unroot and bring back to stock.

Royalglacier should work if you want sense or cyanogen if you want gingerbread or royalginger. Also what method of rooting did you use?

There's the stock nandroid listed in development. Not sure if it will unroot though. But if you want to just restore everything (and unroot) copy the PD15IMG.ZIP to your SD and boot into bootloader

I cannot post links yet but it involved the Terminal Emulator Method
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
Which is best Gingerbread, royalginger, or sense? I read that gingerbread is great.

You're confusing terms. Gingerbread is just Google's code name for Android 2.3. RoyalGinger is a specific Gingerbread-based ROM. Sense is another type of ROM (my personal favorite because the UI is so attractive). The best Sense ROM in my opinion is in my sig.

Just go a Google Image or YouTube seach for HTC Sense, and check out what the UI looks like. The other UI is the standard Android look that ROMs like CM7 and RoyalGinger have.

I figured the Ginger roms were similar since they are both called Ginger lol. Well as i said i am looking to keep the phone's functions but just make it faster with a light rom or something like that.
I just checked out both interfaces and I like the Android UI better than sense, especially the new droid UI.

Go with RoyalGlacier to keep the phone fully functional and hassel free. Its a faster version of stock. Evil's Desire HD rom is also a good choice for a pure sense experience. Everything works on both rom's.

Awesome that is exactly what i want, pretty much the same thing as stock but faster. Now i just need to find a tutorial that will work with my phone and back it up. Is it difficult to install ROMs for a noob? Also how is the battery life on RoyalGlacier?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021 read this tutorial. The second part is the instructions on how to flash. There is a YouTube video made by mackster also. Read carefully then make a backup (nandroid) before anything. Happy flashing!

Going to install a custom rom, but how do I start?

So I finally decided to install a custom rom on my MyTouch 4G (HTC Glacier), and after a lot of research I found out that IceColdSandwich is probably the best one to use (can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629962 )
First off: If there is a better 4.0.x rom out there and I haven't found it...PLEASE direct me to it!
But now I'm stuck. IceColdSandwich has no instructions on how to do this.
I am running the stock T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Gingerbread 2.3.4 with HTC Sense 2.1 and I haven't modified the phone in any way.
Now what to do? How to properly root it and how to install the rom?
I need step by step instructions otherwise I am likely going to screw up somewhere and I can't afford a new phone
So if anyone is willing to invest some time to help me please reply.
P.S.: What would be the best 4.1 (JellyBean) rom i should be keeping an eye on (as in what rom is most likely going to be the best choice to update to when it's ready)?

Use that guide to downgrade and root.
Once you are rooted with S-OFF and have a custom recovery installed, download your ROM of choice, reboot to recovery, make a nand backup, wipe data, cache and system (minimum) and install the zip from sd card.
Check out aospx.

you must downgrade before rooting and upgrading ROMs. My phone is 2.3.4 when I bought it too and I tried many guides but it's just didn't work. Only downgrade to 2.2 makes it way to install other ROMs
help
