Awhile ago i tried rooting my phone with a tutorial from The Unlockr and it went well except i could get S to turn off and it would not perma root. Does anyone know of a tutorial for the newest version of Hboot that can root the phone? I found a tutorial that works with the G2 and Desire Z without ADB but i am not sure if it will work with the Mytouch 4g.

HBoot 0.86.0000 is the bootloader that comes shipped with all Glaciers. It is NOT new and DOES NOT prevent you from rooting. The engineering bootloader (0.85.2007) is obtained either by flashing it manually or by using the root.sh method to root your phone, such as by following the instructions on theunlockr.com. If you ask most people, they'll recommend using the gfree method that is stickied in the development subforum for this device.

Not until you're rooted and have installed a custom recovery. Then you can make a Nandroid backup.

and with the Nandroid backup i can restore my phone to exactly the way it was before the root or to a point where i can unroot the phone?

The backup will allow you to return your phone to stock state in every way except for root. You'll have follow a separate procedure to unroot your phone.

Royalglacier should work if you want sense or cyanogen if you want gingerbread or royalginger. Also what method of rooting did you use?

There's the stock nandroid listed in development. Not sure if it will unroot though. But if you want to just restore everything (and unroot) copy the PD15IMG.ZIP to your SD and boot into bootloader

3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.

You're confusing terms. Gingerbread is just Google's code name for Android 2.3. RoyalGinger is a specific Gingerbread-based ROM. Sense is another type of ROM (my personal favorite because the UI is so attractive). The best Sense ROM in my opinion is in my sig.

Just go a Google Image or YouTube seach for HTC Sense, and check out what the UI looks like. The other UI is the standard Android look that ROMs like CM7 and RoyalGinger have.

I figured the Ginger roms were similar since they are both called Ginger lol. Well as i said i am looking to keep the phone's functions but just make it faster with a light rom or something like that.
I just checked out both interfaces and I like the Android UI better than sense, especially the new droid UI.

Go with RoyalGlacier to keep the phone fully functional and hassel free. Its a faster version of stock. Evil's Desire HD rom is also a good choice for a pure sense experience. Everything works on both rom's.

Awesome that is exactly what i want, pretty much the same thing as stock but faster. Now i just need to find a tutorial that will work with my phone and back it up. Is it difficult to install ROMs for a noob? Also how is the battery life on RoyalGlacier?

I need to take my Hero back to factory specs because I'm taking it into a sprint store tomorrow. What all do I need to do... should I just flash my original rom back on there or can I download a rom from htc and it will clear everything? I understand I need to flash a new recovery image too.

You can flash the original rom back on there and be fine. They wont EVER press Home+power and boot into recovery.
If you really want to go back to default.. Run this RUU

Actually newest ruu is .6 I think
after you run this can you re-root?. im new to android and i want to be able to restore to factory settings whenever after root just so i can re-root and practice it, as well as know how to fix it if i do something stupid or just brick the darn thing.
like i said im new and not good with forums where can i get a copy of the original rom? i would like to have that before i attempt to root.

Yes you can re-root after running the .5 RUU
the original rom is contained in the RUU program linked above
You don't have to be rooted to make a nandroid backup, though you do need to flash a custom recovery image. Being rooted means that you basically have administrator access on your phone, can run things like wifi tether and can overwrite the /system/ folder. A recovery image is a little different than that...
ok thanks, i know root is just admin, but a lot of root guides have you flash a recovery image, by doing that you replace the original recovery image? the one that takes you back to factory reset? thats what im not sure about and im really nervous about changing that and messing it up and bricking my device, thought one forum said its almost imposable to brick.

If you're planning on going back to root, don't run the .6 RUU. I don't think it's rootable. At least that was the case when it came out. .5 IS rootable.

Menu - settings - about phone - software information - software number.
If it is .6, who cares. You can get root by going to the development section and finding the root guide written by regaw_leinad, and the solution for software number .6 is in there, too. Dunno why people make it out to be such a bad thing to have .6... seriously.

Exactly. .6 isn't rootable yet but you are losing nothing by flashing back to .5 except for the patch they released to fix root exploit. What a waste of time for them.

thats the thing though most of my search's come up with nothing or so much stuff that its all over the place and dose not help at all, believe me I am trying. I am vary interested in learning as much as i can so when I have to to root/ or flash i can do it easily.
(thats why I don't post that much, I am trying not to sounds like an idiot, thought i probably already have)

But thats after you run the RUU.exe I meant how do you know what version of the RUU.exe coincides with what version of the software with out installing or running it. I am still a little confused on what I need to do with the RUU.exe and or what it dose. I have been searching the forums but there is not a Good sticky or wiki about it, its only the definition. I am assuming it re-installs a fresh copy of whatever that version of the OS is, but i don't know for sure.

2.27.651.5 is the original Hero update.
2.27.651.6 is the update that was released solely to disable the ability to root.
The RUU for each was released by Sprint/HTC and flashed your phone from 1.5 to 2.whatever.
If you root, then you can run any of these to revert back to the stock Sprint image. If you chose to go to 2.27.651.6 then the only way to re-root would be to flash back to 2.27.651.5 which would only be a pain in the bum.
Since 2.27.651.6 gives you nothing but the inability to root then it only makes sense to revert to .5.
If this makes no sense to you...feel free to give up on rooting altogether. If it does then good luck.
BTW I only figured out how to root on Monday so these forums are most excellent..if you take the time to search through them.

As we know, now we have a clockworkmod port for our Desire HD. It is fully functional and working. It is an awesome thing to be able to flash a custom rom and kernels onto our device.
but the question is, will there be a one click solution or a simpler way to have a custom recovery without downgrading to ENG hboot like now is required to push a custom recovery onto our device..
- will Desire HD have a total ROM Manager support as in just install clockworkmod recovery via ROM Manager like HTC Desire and others?
- or will there be something like Unrevoked where its a one click of having a total free custom recovery onto our device..
the issue is, not everyone is smart enough to perform the risky hboot downgrade and pushing clockwork manually.. a simpler solution would be very handy. This is so that newcommers could just root via Visionary perma root and then sorta like download rom manager via market and then just install CWM without downgrading hboot

btw, why does clockwork needs to be pushed rather than like previously a device (htc desire) clockworkmod can be installed via using rom manager directly.. is it that rom manager still dosent support Desire HD?
true indeed, a click by click software that automates like unrevoked would be very handy.. afterall.. not everyone is an advanced user to perform those brick risking methods
I also wish an easyer way was possible as I really want to push a custom Rom and kernal but just a kernal will do for me. Is there any you tube videos that show you step by step to put a kernal on dhd? If not would some1 find the time to do this? This would help newbies like myself to feel more comfortable.

use visionary to permaroot ur device.. then u can use titanium backup to uninstall those apps with root permissions

No, permaroot via visionary and titanium backup as removal will work fine without CW, beware though take apps out of your /system folder may cause future OTA upgrades to fail when they try and upgrade apps that are no longer present

Not ony that, I do recall having read that removing those system apps does not give you free space to use, so there is no big reason why you should do it....
On topic:
I have my DHD now for a couple of weeks.....never had android before....I had overclocked my DHD when kamma released one of his kernels and visionary temp root was available It worked fine.
Now I have been out for 1,5 week and just continued reading again the day before yesterday.
I must say, I do read the topic I am interested in completely, so (almost) every post, just to get a feeling of potential issues or get some idea of what to do, if...
So although I am new to android, the great threats in the developer forum have given me a reasonable understanding of what to do, how to do it, and what risk there is.
With that, I have perm rooted my DHD, got S-off, installed clockwork mod and flashed leedroid's rom on my DHD. All done yesterday and the day before, without problem.
Am now considering if I will OC again of just leave it as is for now....
just read carefully, don;t just take the 1st post in the dev section, but read through the topic to understand potential issues....The topic creator is in now way responsible for you not reading properly or failing to understand the implications.
But Yes, a one click solution would be handy, although I prefer to have it done this way, as I now have a little better understanding of what actually happens, rather than, hey, I flashed this rom ...

I think you'll see little to no improvement at all...
For me, I used the 'freeze' option in Titanium rather than uninstalling them. It makes my apps menu tidier, and there must be at least a slight improvement in speed as less stuff is running in the background now.
so guys, do you think anyone will come out with a simpler way to flash custom rom soon?

CM7 is being built from source in the dev forum. Gingerbread is technically out for the G2, just not officially. CM7 is better than anything T-mo will push out to us though.

I'm guessing he wants to know when the official HTC Gingerbread releases. The one with Sense... Ugh.
My guess is in 2-3 months. I hope HTC are quick with this one. (Not that I will use it, atleast not a sense rom. I would go as far as Sense without rosie.)
The G2 doesn't use sense UI. Only the Desire Z does.

Rooting the G2 doesn't take any special skill and the procedures that are written out here and on unlockr are proven to work. Once rooting to install Cyanogen all you need is to download ROM Manager from the Marketplace and it will handle installing recovery and allow you to download ROM for install without you having to worry about it.

No, don't use the unlockr tutorial, the one that I saw used the VISIONary way. Just root it with the instructions in our Wiki, that's the safest way to do it. But whatever you do, DON'T use VISIONary EVER, it bricks phones. ADB might not be the easiest to use for some, but at least it works. Some people have used the VISIONary method and it worked for them, but that method is a "fake" root, its about 90% real and that method is risky, it bricks some people's phones. If you root at all, its best to learn how to use ADB with the Rage and GFree method.
BTW, people were talking about the Sense UI, I think that its the most stupidest thing that when a manufacturer makes a UI, such as Touch Wiz, Moto Blur, or Sense, it is referred to as "bloatware" and needs to be removed, but when the community makes a UI such as the MIUI one, people call it the "most awesomest thing EVER!"

That's because the roms nd UIs built here are more customizable and enable features not available through stock roms...like wirless calling, rooting, it just gives more control. And yes! MIUI is awessomeee...my fav. Probably because it has everything I need.

Did you ever bother to consider the fact that you have a smartphone? That means that you can install any email client that you want. If the default android email client doesn't have the features you want, INSTALL A DIFFERENT ONE!!!

No, don't use the unlockr tutorial, the one that I saw used the VISIONary way. Just root it with the instructions in our Wiki, that's the safest way to do it. But whatever you do, DON'T use VISIONary EVER, it bricks phones. ADB might not be the easiest to use for some, but at least it works. Some people have used the VISIONary method and it worked for them, but that method is a "fake" root, its about 90% real and that method is risky, it bricks some people's phones. If you root at all, its best to learn how to use ADB with the Rage and GFree method.

You're being a little harsh there. In fact, visionary has never bricked a single phone EVER. What it can do, under some circumstances, is corrupt the system partition, which is TRIVIAL to repair. Especially since the first step after visionary is to gfree it.
ALL THAT VISIONARY IS, IS A TEMPROOT.
The reason why it can cause issues is that you can end up in a state where you are synchronizing a broken filesystem cache with the root filesystem. That is all. This is NOT a brick.
The ONLY known bricked VISION was produced by scotty2 while trying out a radio command that repartitioned the eMMC and broke the radio. Visionary has NOT bricked even ONE phone.
Hey I want to know something. I rooted with visionary a month ago and now I can't flash any themes, it just say installation aborted. Do you think it has anything to do with visionary. And if it is, what can I do to reverse the effect or even fix it? Thanks.

Uninstall Visionary and use either rage or gfree.
I've done a fair few flashes with my Desire and always found it quite easy to follow and do, but I am so, so, so confused about how to go about attacking the HTC Desire.
Essentially, I want to root it and install a custom ROM (maybe change a radio, that's it). However, there is no set of instructions in any one thread, it's all over the place.
So far, i've managed to permroot my brothers phone using Visionary. Now, the next step is getting Clockwork Recovery. However, there seems to be two version 2.x (installed by ROM manager) and version 3.x. Apparently the former doesn't work for CM7... but I cannot find how to actually get Clockwork 3.x installed (easily...).
What are the most popular DesireHD ROMs and do they all require Clockwork 3.x? Also, what is S-Off... and do I need it!?
Because standard Desire does not have nearly as tight security as DHD has. You need S-OFF to get clockworkmod, and if you want to flash CWM 3.x, you need ENG S-OFF. Only gingerbread roms need CWM 3.x.
S-OFF: Phone security off, internal memory becomes read/write, you can flash anything you want, no version checks etc.

Hmm... OK, I mean this is for my brother who is in no way technically inclined Perhaps we'll just leave it rooted for now and see if an automated tool appears for the Desire HD in the future

Root phone - Done
S-Off/Eng S-Off
Install Clockwork Mod
Install ROM
The bit I find trouble with is how to do the clockwork mod bit. It seems like CM is the best DHD ROM, but that requires Clockwork Recovery 3.whatever and to get that installed you have to go through a ton of SDK stuff. Is there an easy way to get it installed?

If u really need CM7, but doesn't want to install cwm 3, than, try CM7 on my signature..

Simple answer, no.
Please try following the advice you are being given and search the development forum, if your not willing/able to devote the time to reading up on S-OFF and installing CM7 please leave well alone and save us all a little time
To be honest I think that dhd is quite easy to root. You have one click tool in stickies so really a monkey could do it.
I'm attempting to root my girlfriends galaxy s and it's really complicated. Download this download that check if you have 3button startup, get Odin and so on....
Desire HD is fun to root...

Visionary will not do it, but I might make a tool to handle all those downgrade commands. I am busy now, however, so you should not wait for it.

I wouldn't hold your breathe, whilst there is a simple-ish downgrade route the chances of anyone going to the great effort of needlessly finding and exploiting a new security flaw are remote. Anyone desperate for root will probably take the downgrade route and anyone unable to grasp the steps involved would probably be better served by a stock rom

Tech support, without root access you are unlikely to do anything terminal to your DHD software wise, so that should limit your tech support to hardware issues. With root access ham fisted people are returning phones with user inflicted software problems
well i followed the perm root instructions and im pretty sure im rooted.. anyway to make sure?
and also, since im new to all this i have a few questions.
first, at the end of the perm root instructions after u do all that rooting stuff it says something about recovery.. what is recovery and do i have to do that? is it recommended? and how do i go about doing that?
and also what is the best and most stable rom out now?

Most of the roms are in the same place. They're either based on HTC Sense and fully functioning or based on pure google AOSP code and missing a few still.

I'm using "AwesomeRom" based on the stock htc code but with sense things removed.
Recovery is the app that runs pre-boot time that lets you choose a rom.

alright thanks man. but to follow the instructions do i have to do the cd to android platforms then adb shell then su thing again to start doing that??
and another question (sorry)
when i flash these roms will everything be deleted? like contacts and stuff?
and also i know some of these roms get rid of stock apps. how do i get those back? and stock htc sense apps and sprint apps?
