I updated to mango a few days ago, and today my phone randomly turned off, and now it hangs at the samsung logo. The only way to power on the device is to remove and slip in the battery. Also, I've tried all soft and hard resets, formatting, nothing works. Never had an SD card, had the Focus for 2 months.

Something must've gone wrong. Something similar happened to me, you can try re-flashing (that also means you have to start from scratch: reinstall every app and make sure you sync ALL your media).
Read my story here.
Wanted to bump a thread since I have a similar problem. I attempted to run the CAB uploaded with the latest OEM updates for the Focus. The phone went into download mode, uploaded the cabs. Once it rebooted it started flashing the Samsung logo, 2 seconds, Samsung logo again.
The download mode flashed quickly and resets back to the Samsung logo. I suspect something went bad with the bootloaded/etc. Since I can't get into download mode with the key combo (the screen flashes triangle for split second and resets), would getting a JIG help at all in this scenario? Or should I consider selling it for scrap?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I don't think it's the bootloader.
You should try the jig, it's just a few bucks.
Sounds like a plan, does any Samsung microusb JIG work for this purpose? Almost all the ones one ebay state Galaxy series, etc.
I bought one for Galaxy S (I9000) and it did the job. There are also a few how-tos with cables and resistors on the forum, if you search, but I'd go for the jig, it's a few bucks...
Well, the JIG didn't work. It flashed the Samsung logo for a second and then resets, the cycle repeats endlessly. I guess its time to put it up for parts of fleabay. Sad
Thanks for the help though.

hi
my omina 7 of 1 month is broken.
A few weeks ago it wouldnt boot and gave the screen indicating
the phone needs to be plugged into the pc, it then booted ok.
Yesterday it gave the same message but by the time i got it home
the message was gone.
Now it will not boot, it simply cycles through the samsung logo, the three network logo , then back to the samsung logo.
Will be taking it back to the three shop tonight.
is there a way of hard resetting the phone using the buttons?
I have only found info on hard reset from within the OS, which obviously i now cannot get to.
has anyone else had this problem
The only similar problem i found was with a focus
was on the windowsphonesecrets website under the heading restoration error
to hard reset the focus press the power, volume & camera buttons all together. that might do it.
Have you tried taking the battery out of the phone? Heard from someone that that solved the problem...
yes tried taking the battery out
tried it without the sim
let the battery completely drain and tried again
the hard reset button combination didnt work either
just constantly cycling between the samsung and three network logos
three have now sent it off for repair ....
I have a very similar problem. My phone randomly rebooted itself but now it sticks on the Samsung Omnia 7 logo. I've tried removing the battery but nothing.
Is there a Safe Mode I can boot into?
Damn looks like I have the same problem. Was playing a game.Phone rebooted on its own, all I get is the Samsung Omnia 7 screen.
Tried a Hard Reset. I get the options pop up for about 2 seconds asking if I want to format. If I am quick enough to press the Home button nothing happens it just switches off.
Did you try to flash the ROM ?
Me?
No?
Download mode was the only mode that seemed to be recognised by my PC.If it wasn't in warranty I would maybe have tried that, but as it is in warranty I will let T-Mobile deal with it.
my repaired samsung was returned mid january
a few weeks later and the same thing has happened again...
phone froze, switched it off , now will not boot again
it is definitely the same hand set or at least the same outer casing
the bill said it had some parts replaced
I wonder what caused this issue?
I had similar problem and this is how I solved it:
Make sure your Device is switched off (remove and reinsert the battery)
1. Press and hold the Camera, Volume Down, and Power buttons simultaneously.
2. Release Power when the phone vibrates, but continue to hold down Camera and Volume Down.
3. Release Camera and Volume Down when the Format prompt is displayed on screen.
4. Press Windows key twice to confirm the hard reset.
Enjoy your phone now
add 1 to the list, mine is doing thin, formatting doesnt help, reflashing doesnt help.
unless i can find a fix, im without a phone for 15 days while tmob plays with it
any progress?
Since applying the update that Samsung release yesterday I'm having the same problem...
Format didn't work, installing 'older' firmwares (I8700BSEJK1, I8700XENJK1 and I8700DBTJK1) didn't solve any issue
Anybody with more ideas?
I've also had this issue... I think it was caused by forcing the nodo update. Now I've updated it normally using this guide

I hope now the problem is solved.
My friends Samsung Focus seems to have gotten stuck turning on just showing SAMSUNG... phone did not have a SD card in it all. We had tried a sd card but never worked so removed it. About a week later the phone just rebooted and got stuck on boot.. Did the hard reset a few times and nothing? Also I accidentally got the phone in download mode. Since i have a Captivate, ive seen the download mode before and used it for kernels and such.. Is there any use of it on the Focus somehow? It says download mode and then do not turn off. it takes about 10 minutes..
Anyone have any suggestions or know anything? Phone is unlocked for tmobile, so cannot go to ATT to get replaced..
Thanks
same issue - samsung black screen no sd card at all
My Focus did the same thing today - it was almost as if an auto update was sent out, and the device reset itself. When I tried to enter my passcode, i got errors, and then upon resetting I became stuck on the black samsung screen. I've tried hard and soft resets with and without the SIM card. Nothing.
Any advice, beyond heading into ATT tomorrow?
hard reset is the 3 button combo, right? if so whats the soft reset?
yes. hard reset is the +, power, camera combo. soft reset is just powering down and then starting back up.
That is the issue I am having with my phones and I believe it is heat related. Check battery meter when you do the battery pull and reboot. Also the battery is warm to the touch also the screen if it stays in the samsung boot mode.
mine did the same thing this morning... I have a warranty replacement on the way. Would love to know what/why/ fix etc... though.

I have gotten a new replacement and battery and still have the same issues if I keep it in my jacket or shirt pocket.

That is absolutely weird. This phone really has a big defect then if this happens out of the blue. Not good for Samsung... unless its the software that is screwy
Just had this happen today.
Stuck at samsung boot logo. Unable to get past it for hours. Getting it replaced tomorrow

Update on my situation: I was able to had reset it, but it still kept me at the Samsung logo. AT&T replaced it. That solved the problem
Same issue here with my Rogers Focus, it has happened on two devices now. Would love to know what the problem is, so when I get my third one I can avoid it.
Happened to my Focus as well. Since I'm using an unlocked device and I'm not in the US, it looks like I'm pretty much screwed unless someone comes up with a fix like a ROM or something that can solve the issue.
From what I can tell its not battery related at all. I tried the battery from a Galaxy S I had and still didn't fix the problem.
The thing is that Samsung of America firmwares are very hard to find. I have find all the Roms on this page http://www.samfirmware.com/ even instrucction on how to flash the phone. The thing is that they only have the Omnia firmwares, we need a i917 Rom. One more thing you can put your phone in Download mode pressing Volume Up and Camera botton simultaneus from there you can flash the Phone. Come on we need a real hacker who can bring us a firmware for this phone.
Going into download mode is pointless until we get a Firmware. Looks like no Dev/Hacker is interested in Samsung Focus right now.
Hi,
Details of phone: Galaxy S4 i9500, Network is Three (UK), 16GB External Micro SD card, phone is not rooted and is running on stock OS.
I have owned the phone brand new since the end of August.
Last night the battery of my S4 went flat and the phone died (I didn't have a charger on me).
This morning when I stuck it on charge and after letting it go for about 10mins, the phone displayed the Galaxy text as usual, then the Three logo and blue LED as usual, but then it vibrated and rebooted itself and would do so continuously unless I held the power down.
I have tried letting it fully charge as well as removing the battery for over an hour, but when I power on, the same problem persists.
I went into Android system recovery; rebooting from there results in the same effect and an error appears before powering off when I try clearing the cache.
What can I do? It has not been like this for over 24 hours.
I don't want to factory reset in case that doesn't fix the problem either and it's all for nothing.
Thanks in advance for any answers.
Well, the next logical step is a factory reset.

Thanks for your response, I have considered that, but like I said "I don't want to factory reset in case that doesn't fix the problem either and it's all for nothing".
There must be another solution. I'm going to try installing the last update through Kies.
Could be that the battery has crapped out. Do you have access to another? I haven't tried this, but can you power it on with just the USB connected (without battery)?
My guess is your battery is dead.
Ok, I have solved the problem, however not the most ideal way.
I ran the 'Emergency Upgrade and Initialisation' on Samsung Kies, this requires you to put the phone in download mode.
It is basically a factory reset to the latest update and on first try, the phone works fine again.
I did read elsewhere however that a lot of people experiencing the same problem tried swapping the stock (apparently defective) battery with a new one and this fixed the issue as well without having to go through a reset.
I may get a new battery just in case this happens again so I can swap it.
Anyway, thanks for the responses guys.
I was headed home today and my Sprint Galaxy S4 shutoff. It would not come back on, so i removed the battery. When i reinsert the battery, my phone does a quick vibrate, then the white Samsung Galaxy S4 logo screen appears, then disappears, then thats it. Nothing else happens. I have tried different chargers, a different battery, tried download and recovery mode. Nothing has worked so far to get me any further. When i try to go into recovery, blue writing shows in the top left that says Booting Recovery, then it shuts off and nothing else happens. When i plug into a computer, the phone does not connect to the computer.
I am usually pretty good with anything to do with a phone, but this has me stumped.
I have not downloaded any new apps or any different roms or kernels anytime recently. My phone is rooted but still on the stock rom. This phone was rooted about a year ago when i got it, and as far as roms or programming or anthing, nothing has been done to it since then.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Ok so i was wrong, the phone will boot into download mode, but only for about 2 secs, then it goes blank and off again. So it seems like some sort of power issue with the phone itself, as in hardware. Not sure that there is too much that i can do about that, but does anyone have any ideas?
I just read something on here about Samsung having a bad batch of batteries. If I were you I would take my battery to someone that could test it to see if it is holding a charge.
Had the same issue. The dude at sprint said it was a bad update that went out but not sure how true that is due to the fact that i was running a custom rom and recovery. I was running clockword mod recovery and latest CM11 nightly. If you have the insurance I'd say bring it back and they should replace it.
Any fix?
I have just been experiencing this problem as well. My s4 was working fine then all of the sudden the power button would become very sensitive and would think I would want to turn the phone off. I would click the back arrow but the phone would still either turn itself off or reboot. Then it got worse and would get stuck in bootloops. Now I have to reinsert the battery every time for it to turn on. It gets to the samsung logo and then shuts off. I can get into recovery for about 2 seconds and then it shuts off as well. My s4 is not rooted at all. Can someone please help me? I really don't want to pay at least 70 dollars for samsung just to look at it.:crying:
My Note 4 had started randomly rebooting a couple of weeks ago...only once every several days. Not enough to where I really worried. Then 2 days ago it rebooted, showed the Samsung Galaxy logo, and rebooted again, repeating this over and over again.
I was able to coax it into letting me wipe and reset it from the recovery menu, but that didn't change anything. Then I was able to get it into download mode eventually (when I plug it in and hold down the buttons it sometimes works, not without plugging it in though....or if I use one of those usb keys that kick you into download mode).
After putting it in the freezer for a bit I was able to reflash it in Odin and get it to come back up, but eventually it rebooted. I've done this several times. Any idea what this could be?
Freezer? How can it fix your rebooting problem? I think problem is on the hardware side as u said the problem occurs even after re-installation of software. Backup things and get it to service center.
