Odin help - please - Galaxy S II General

I'm probably going to get flogged for posting such a dumb question but I need to because all my search results have given me a mine field of information and I'm still no further forward.
I've had the S2 for a little while now. I'm familiar with it - so now I want to get it rooted!
I seem to be falling at the first hurdle though. Thing is.............. when i try to open the .exe odin file - the odin box flashes up very quickly but then disappears! It's driving me mad! I'm using windows XP.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
Cheers
Tanya

Do you have the Samsung USB drivers installed, and has Kies (if you've installed it) been terminated?

have you tried to run it as administrator and/or compatibility mode ?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

It works fine on my XP PC. It sounds as though it was a corrupted download. Download again.

I've managed it - at last.
I followed the one step root guide from this forum and opened odin3 not 5 - and it worked perfectly.
My only problem now is that I'm on the last step - I need to start S2 root and click root device - only thing is................... where/how do i start S2root?
Thanks guys
Tanya

well if you have downloaded follow the instructions from the post where you downloaded it from. you have to install Kies so you have the USB drivers, then make sure USB debugging is turned on on your phone, (Go to Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging and click yes)
then plug your phone in and run the program by double clicking on the .exe file

doesnt odin reboot your phone once you done the rooting? it should do really..think there is option on there were you can do it....

adb Difficulties

I'm having a really hard time getting adb to recognize my device. I had it work for me once and now I can't get it to again. Also, each time I load sdk, I have to reinstall all the packages. I really don't know what is going on but if anyone out there could provide me a walkthrough I would greatly appreciate it.
Chad
Which OS are you using?
Windows Vista.
did you install the driver pack from Samsung?
check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
I tried the one from the Samsung site and that didn't work. I also tried the 32-bit version in that thread you provided to no avail.
do you have USB Debugging enabled?
Yep, USB Debugging checked. I'm in the process of downloading the sdk for like the fifth time. Now when I plug my phone in with USB Debugging checked, my pc doesn't even recognize it and doesn't even try to install the drivers. I made up a font the other day and really want to install it on my phone.

That's ok. Just right click on my computer, then go to device manager. You will see something with the Yellow ! right click on that then say update driver. Point to the folder where the drivers are and you should get success installing the drivers.
computer/properties/advanced/environmental variables "PATH" edit "path to sdk tools" i.e."C:\androidsdk\tools"
Success!! Thank you guys for the help! I updated the sdk this morning and everything is a go! Thanks again!!

Problem conecting to PC

Anyone else having problems getting their Windows 7 PC to pick up there SIII
When I connect my Phone I get the following message.
***********
Hardware device missing
Windows cannot identify the device SAMSUNG USB
***********
Or something like that.
Anyway, it picked it up once (yesterday) and nothing since then. Its really annoying as it won't connect to Kies.

There are two possible issue at play here, one your pc drivers are incorrect or two the phone has an issue (1 is much more likely).
1) Uninstall Kies, reboot the pc, reinstall kies and disconnect from the internet then plug your phone in.
see if that works, if not you may need to manually point to the correct drivers
2) Odin flash your existing rom back using the "update bootloader" issue, this will repair any slight niggles on the phone side.
Tried option 1 and still nothing, Kies keeps crashing and the phone will still not connect.
How do I manualy select the right driver???
I don't really want to try option 2. I only have the phone 2 weeks and I'm very happy with it as it is. I don't want to go modding it like my last phone.
I have this issue too.
You are not alone...Lot of users have this issue!
I cant really find what cause it, but you can read some threads here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828016
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844400
There are more you can find if google the problem...
I always for now unistall/install drivers again. But after 2-3 times of properly connections the issue is back.

Option 2 is not strictly speaking modding, all you will be doing is flashing the stock rom (the rom you already have on your phone) back over itself, you will not be rooting or customising everything, the rom will still be "official" and not "modified".
As for the drivers, I assume your using windows? if so:
Press Start
Right click on "computer"
Manage devices
find the item that has the "!" error sign and right click update driver
point it to the kies installation folder.
hope for the best.

Done the above and it tell's me that I'm using the most up to date drivers.
ok new idea (but will only be a temp fix)
When you plug the phone in it should have a notification saying connected to media device.
Click that, change from MTP to PTP and back again. and see if that helps.
Just found this worked for me.
******* Posted by Ditto
Yeah that whole "Hardware ID missing" was an irritating situation. This is what I recommend as far as making it work.
1. Plug in.
2. When you get the error message, I think its because of a conflict with the ADB interface. Go to Settings, Developer Options, and check off USB Debugging.
3. Plug in once again and it should work. If not, try toggling between Camera and MTP.
*******
All i want to do is see my phone in MyComputer then I can access the files no problem.
Back on Media device (mtp) and it looked like it installed drivers and then the folder Computer/GT-I9300 opened so happy days.

VS980 root troubles

Hey guys ive been pretty stoked to root and rom my g2 now that im bored of LG's UI haha i have been trying to use the IOroot method but something about the drivers is giving me such a hard time! i installed them but every time i open a command window and type in "adb devices" nothing is coming up so obviously its not being able to read my device which isnt alowing me to root my phone any help would be greatly appriciated! thanks in advance
I was having trouble, finally went to LG site to download drivers

adb is a special android thing. You need to install it to just use it anywhere. Do this:
1. Create a folder on your desktop (you can call it root or whatever you want).
2. Extract IORoot into folder created in step one.
3. SHIFT RIGHT CLICK and do "open command window here" (This is the most important).
4. type
Code:
adb devices
5. if you devices shows run the root.bat file to root your device.
Look at this for a little more help.

This is just a thought, but maybe, power the phone off, power the PC off. Turn them both back on, re-read the instructions on how to root the phone. It sort of sounds like you could be missing just a little thing on the instructions. You may also try a different USB port on your PC too. I rooted mine back on iRoot 6 so I would have to think that iRoot 10 should be better then what I used.

I had the same issue. I installed these lg drivers, not sure if they had anything to do with it because it still didn't work. What finally worked was when I turned off debug and may have been in mtp connection. Obviously after you have to put back in debug and ethernet connection to follow the ioroot method.

unfortunatly with ethernet on i am still getting the same results... its just not recognizing my device? at least now in the notification bar i get the notification that USB debugging is on so i guess im making progress? uggh this is getting pretty annoying any thoughts guys?
Run it directly from local drive root. IE C:/ Windows 7? Control alt delete. End the stale adb process, you should see two, one not performing sitting around 2000 kb ram and the other using ram. End that and it should force adb to kick in. I had to do this on win 7 multiple times with dif phones. It's like it locks up when finding the com port or whatever the hell it's doing. I take no blame if you screw up your device this way. I have resorted to a virtual xp for all my phone needs as not everything works in Linux.
Here's how rooted my phone with IORoot:
Unzipped IORoot to root of my hard drive
Plugged in phone with usb (make sure debug mode is enabled). When prompted to choose connection, choose modem. You should see debug icon appear in status bar. If not, choose Ethernet.
Opened IORoot folder. Hold down shift and right click an empty area and choose 'open command window'
Type adb devices. If device shows up, proceed. With normal root procedure.

Not sure if it matters but I am running 64 bit Windows 8
- In the instructions didn't you have to change a setting for the Com Port to get it to see the phone??
- Did you ever get the prompt on your phone to accept the Connection. I can not remember what it was, but it only comes up once, and I am not referring to the USB connection IE Ethernet??
- Are you sure you have Developer Options turned on?? The step where you keep tapping on the Developer thing and then the phone finally gives you the Developer Options??

MTP Solution!

Hi!
I've been having some problems with MTP and I've been searching for days and finally found a solution!
My problem was that MTP was showing a yellow exclamation in device manager and an error "Code 31"
After installing, uninstalling and re-installing dozens of drivers I found this solution:
1. With phone unplugged open cmd (Run as Administrator)
2.Type this command:
Code:
net localgroup Administrators "local service" /add
3. Plug phone
4. ???
5. Profit!

Well maybe it is a bit dangerous..however, it does not add your local account to the administrator group. just the "Local Service" account.
This is the only solution I've found for my MTP problem and I thought it would be good to share cause I've spent days trying to fix it.
Anyway, I believe there are many things we do in these forums here(generally, at xda forums. not m8 specific), that make our phones less secure, but we still do it because we love to control our devices in any way we want.
:highfive:
Easiest way is just to swich off device (yes off ?) plug to Pc and wait for Windows to install correct drivers

This for didn't work on my PC. But what did work (similar) is to manually select the device in Device Manager, and pick the option to pick the drivers, then selected the generic Android MTP device.

Tab S2 (813) SD Card Not Seen by Windows 10

Howdy, folks. Had a T813 for about a half year now, but have not done anything in the way of a custom ROM - I just rooted the stock MM firmware and ran with it.
I'd like to now put a Nougat ROM on the machine, but for some reason, Windows is not mounting the SD card in the tablet. There are some files I'd like to archive just in case things go "big-bad". If you have any insight, please point me in the right direction?
Also, since I haven't yet flashed TWRP on this machine, any warnings or guides would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Yep. That's the driver I installed. But no go. I'm not seeing the USB/Charge option.
My plan is to flash the tablet with another ROM anyway. Right now, I'm stock rooted with (if memory serves) CF Autoroot. So, can I use Odin (or something else) to offload my data until I get to where I want to be?

I've had this same issue at times with various devices. Fixes that have worked for me are:
1. Try a different USB port on your computer. In my case my ports on the front were not working but the back ports worked fine.
2. Try a different cable. I had one fail just this past week.
3. Find the drivers on your PC and delete them manually, then reinstall from scratch. Not sure why this worked but it did in a couple of cases.
Worst case you can remove your SD card and plug it directly into your PC, then copy any files between that you need to save. Also, just asking the obvious here, do you have "USB debugging" turned on in Developer Options? I am assuming you do but ya never know.
