Hello,
So over the past few weeks, Ive noticed some strange "flashing" on my evos screen. The only way I can describe it is when movie theaters do a changeover on reels, and you sometimes notice a quick burn mark, or flash when I take a screenshot of my evos phone...if that makes any sense...
Anyways, today I ran a file recovery program on my evo to recover some deleted photos. After the software finished pulling all images from my evos flash card I noticed there were many screenshots. Anything from google searches I ran, facebook pages, websites, etc. Pretty much random screenshots from my phone. I know for a fact I didnt take these screenshots, so what can explain these images that this software recovered? Some of these screenshots are anywhere between 1 day and 10 months old...since then I have tried out numerous roms so I would assume any spy program (maybe a girlfriend installed?) would have been deleted.
Any input is appreciated.
Maybe just cached images.

I'm thinking cached images too....I know FB stores some profile pics in my gallery, and I've found advertisements in there from time to time as well.
did you leave "shootme" running in shake mode?
Im talking about full on phone screenshots. Including the page im on, the text im sending. Status bar at the top included. Just as if I did a screen capture. Images of texts im in the middle or replying to, etc.

That's a very good thought there....
Also what recovery program is this? And I doubt its a spy app
nobody calls my EVO a fizzle and gets away with it!!
and where exactly did you find these screenshots?
That would be bookmarks saved to the sd card sort of like web history on your pc, nothing to worry about, my evo does the same thing.
Saves history in
.bookmark_thumb1 on sd card
and in
/data/data/com.android.browser
Just internet history cache images.
Sent via XDA Premium app on my hybrid Rooted Evo 4G.
internet browser caches that include screen shots of his texts, etc???
Wanna think that one again?
Lol no I don't actually. In stock Android builds it caches everything.
No spyware caches images on the phone or sd card, it remotes it to the server in and encrypted file to be reviewed later.

Some spy program like mobile spy can record text messages, visited websites and every activity on the phone. If you suspected that it may installed by your girlfriend, then talked about it with her. Don't distrust her if you have no evidence. Good luck.
Check this two most common hints:
1. Is your phone easily drained battery?
2. Does your phone connect to internet even if not used?
If these two is observed in your phone then you are under radar of someone who installed the spyware.
Do you even realize you're posting in a thread that's over a year old?

I remember my old Samsung had Carrier IQ "spy ware."
There's an app on the Market place that detects for this, you should look it up.
Thanks for the info

[Q] Phone app, Contacts app rant
I love my SGS, hence i want to rant about it
Dialing from contacts, phone takes always one extra step than other phones.
if i already took the time to set defaults manually,
(1) why do i have to select the number to call again (contacts, solution could be viewing button on far right from the contact name) or
(2) when i use smart dial and am satisfied with first suggestion why do i have to select it then press call (phone app, if i want to call other suggestions they already show it separately in a drop down)?
after a month of using my sgs i still hold the phone to my ear and wait for a while, until i realize i hadn't pressed the green button.
(3) in contacts app i can search my friends by nickname, but ONLY IF i edited their nickname through contacts app, i.e. if it's imported from gmail and i never edited it on my phone it fails to find by nickname.
(4) smart dial is not so smart as it can't search by nickname, unless it's the only field for the contact in the phone's phonebook, huh? so i have to manually add new contacts to phone, then link them, for my closest people (phone app) if it's okay for a handful of people but starting from 20 i start cursing samsung app devs
(5) for my business contacts... it avoids searching by last name, what? (phone app)
then the editing, grouping etc... but since i don't add people daily i can make it work through other apps.
so are there solutions, that you know of, to these woes ?
1. I think the default number only applies outside the contact app (like a shortcut). But if you open it from contact it has to show you all the contact info (otherwise how else can dial the other numbers of that contact that is not the default??).
2. I think this is to cater for the 3G video call option.
3/4/5. It is kind of lame the phone app search only matches from beginning of name and not the entire string. (Hopefully new firmware can cater to this). Luckily the global search (i.e. long press menu key) matches everything. You may want to use this to find instead of opening the phone/contact app. It is much faster
In the contacts settings you can set the order to last name before first name, then you can search by last name.
If you want to call default number just flick the contact name right. Flick it left for message.

Hey thanks for the tip
was it in the manual? (which i never read for any device....)
Well thats just great.
I am seriously so fed up with Samsung its not even funny. I am never buying one of there products ever again.
I said that I would never buy another Samsung product after my last Samsung phone, the Instinct. That was by far the worst phone I have ever owned. I with I had have stuck to that promise.
Oh well. I guess I learned the wrong way.
I think I might just try to sell this pos for as much as I can get for it and buy an HTC Desire HD.
Piece of crap! Grrrrrrrrr
I have put up with this phones issues for months, thinking wait for froyo and see if it helps things. To my delight froyo just became available for o2 uk customers, so I quickly updated. I was like a child with a new toy...but now feel like its broke/lost!
Firstly firstly beaufiful widgets doesn't seen to work properly on froyo. But my main gripe is the new found super lag. I cant even type this message without the phone stuttering! Scrolling up and down in anything...it stutters...like wtf?
Whats my best bet? Hard reset? If so how do I do it? If I backup my contacts on kies will it restore to a factory rest phone?
Any advice is welcome!

I feel your pain.
Even going to JPO theres still lag, and the number of hacks that have to be done to get away from RFS and make the phone actually perform like it should is crazy.
I ended up defecting to an iPhone 4, but still have the SGS waiting for the day when its lag free and performing the way it should.
IMO the SGS "could" be way better than the iPhone, but it just needs Samsuck to pull the finger out.

I did the same and defected to iPhone 4. I will be selling my Galaxy S as I don't believe Samsung will resolve the issues. They have had plenty of time to do this already and nothing has happened. Even with the XDA Developers showing them the problems and coming up with solutions they still have a laggy phone whcih lacks in so many way's. Don't even get me started on Kies.
In the end I bought an iPhone 4 and iPad wifi. Using iTunes and everything is working correctly.
Do yourself a favour...........
No no, its a great phone
Just need to apply mods/hacks/roots etc to make it work apparently and when update comes out you undo it all then redo it all again and hope for best.
I think it would be a great phone if it didn't lag so much.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
JP3 is sh*t. use another firmware
use doc's or darky's and wait for cm6.1 that'll surely be free from lags.
I will have to disagree. I got my galaxy s 3 months replacing iphone 3gs. It came with eclair 2.1 and it was perfect. I did the froyo update the day it came out with the reg hack and kept on getting freezes and force close. Did a factory reset and everything was fine. Did the new official update JPA with no reset and again perfect. The only program that lagged a little was email. Did the one click lag fix and now everything is smooth and fast. With over 50 apps i have no problems at all. My only gripe is that it should have more available ram and with flash on the browser stutters on flash heavy sites.
Apart from that i am very happy. By the way a get sattelite lock on my gps from a cold start in 30 seconds!

What most users are forgetting is when you upgrade the ROM from Eclair to Froyo you MUST perform a Factory Reset.
Doing so will eliminate a lot of the problems with current Apps.

I figure it be a good place to try and list all the regressions in behavior we see in DK28.
can be used to list them / point out what changed and why its not really a regression, just have to change what we do.
I've noticed two things so far
1) Can't dial by last name in on screen keypad dialer, just first name. This is somewhat annoying (especially as my friends last names are more distinct than first names)
2) missing all my "other" calendars in calendar app. (i.e. I have facebook exported that way, along with holidays and some other stuff). Also doesn't let me select individual calendars that I want to list. I believe this might have a backup/restore issue. Just reset my phone and haven't restored anything from backup and have all my calendars.
This also seems to impact agenda widget. For some reason calltrack does work Part of me assumes I'm doing something wrong here.
Update:
Other regressions: (reported and verified by independent source)
3) Mediahub no longer works (requires you to update it from Market, but can't be found): noted: 12/5/2010 by jwhisl (Orbiting234: probably related to Market not recognizing DK28)
4) No way to prevent GPS data from being included in EXIF of Pictures if GPS is on: noted 12/5/2010 by styckx
One odd thing I noticed was with Dolphin browser. When holding the back button to bring up the exit menu it used to vibrate when it popped up. Now it does not. It still vibrated before I upgraded to froyo.
I know it is a little thing any meaningles but it threw my whole operating habits out of wack.

I've noticed that the Mediahub application no longer works. When I launch the app it tells me to install an update then sends me to the market. Unfortunately the market cant find the download I need so I cant watch any of my purchased media. The phone is also telling me that the media type is not supported.
Installed dk28 via zip and hard reset device to fix audio, camera, and memory card issues
might anybody have the update in apk or zip format?
Ok, this one is pissing me off. It seems you can no longer disable gps data getting lumped into you camera pictures.

I can use 4G in NYC, though I do notice when I reboot the phone that a similar thing happens, I just attribute it to be doing to omuch processing.
Besides Media Hub update not being found in marketplace, Car Home and Desk Home apps are unable to be found in the market either. Will probably all be worked out once DK28 is properly recognized by the market for these particular apps.
anyone notice the auto complete isn't working and only recognizes names in the contact list?
It failed my test. Just like the previous leaks, last.fm skips and jitters when browsing the web and playing music at the same time. As a matter of fact, music skips any time I do anything thqat even moderately taxes the cpu. My Evo does fine under the same conitions. Why, Samsung, why?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm kind of hoping that this is still a beta version and not final cause it still has some flaws compared to ecclair. I made a thread in the Developement forum about the problems I am having with dk28.
Slow rotation
Slower frame rate on notification drop down
Browser choppiness and checker boarding
etc.
media hub is an exclusive samsung galaxy app
some of the dk25 roms have nexus one signatures in the build.prop that is why is doesn't show it

It seems to be putting my location in there even with gps off. I had to turn off the wifi location also just to get it to stop.
I downloaded the zip file last night when it was first posted on here. I had stock rom, changed the file name on my phone to update.zip, moved it to root folder, did the recovery and update. Everything is fine and I'm on froyo 2.2.1 now. I'm try to replicate the problems you guys are having, but I can't. The only problem I can replicate is the checkered box when zooming in and out. My hardware is .5 and I just bought the phone last month. I got my wifes at the same time and hers is doing just fine as well. Do you guys think that even though my hardware is .5 that there could be some differences in the phone since everything is still working better then 2.1 for me and my wife?

other issues i've noticed:
-new text message alert does not disappear when the text is viewed, only when text is entered as response.
-browser gradient at top (right below notification/status bar) disappears when scrolling and pops back on once done scrolling
-swype sucks after update
-browser does not auto hide keyboard once completed text imput and window refreshes
-as noted, the geotagging data on the pictures cannot be prevented even with gps off
all of these, on top of an ugly messaging app have caused me to do a complete factory reset just to get rid of the issues. i never had problems with 2.1 so i guess i'll stick with it until the final release.

Check your Swype Settings. [Speed vs. Accuracy] may be tuned for speed. Slide it over to the right and it should work better.
After using this for 8hrs now. I've come to the conclusion this release sucks a bag of .....
Crappy keyboard lag, last.fm skipping, the captivate buttons responsiveness has changed (for the worse), delayed screen rotation, camera writing exif gps data unless you disable gps and wireless location.
Overall this just runs and feels like pure junk. I was never one demanding and frothing for 2.2 and I'm glad I have backups of my 2.1 install and will be going back to it. I liked 2.2 at first until I really got to feeling it out.
Sure GPS is fixed but they screwed up 10 things in its place.

+1 on this sentiment. I am not having any issues like this. Now this is not a regression, but I noticed that there is still the cell standby issue that requires airplane mode toggle. I find that glitch to be really frustrating.
Does anyone know if the Geo-Tagging toggle (on/off switch) has been brought back in EC05? Its gone in EB13 and Geo-Tagging is turned on 24/7 as long as the GPS is on. It needs to be brought back ASAP! Check out this NBCActionNews video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2vARzvWxwY
This is a serious Issue!
As far as I know all the earlier versions had the option to turn it off as can be seen here.

I know the Camera lag and video low light issues are said to be fixed in EC05 but I haven't heard anything about the Geo-Tagging Toggle being brought back.
its been a while, was that toggle in the camera settings??? Its not on EC05, midNIGHT... doubt Rob would remove it... so am I looking in the right spot?
gonna check out that app... dont like that crap...
EDIT: pretty cool app... but I wish it was automatic, or at least batch... but its a great temp solution, thanks for the heads up!
I looked at Geo Eraser and 1 thing i noticed it only has 7 reviews. That does not mean its a bad app or anything. I think if i used it though i would always be double checking that it actually worked and Hasn't crashed or anything. I would much prefer a way to turn off Geo-Tagging and not have to worry about it. I hopeing that maybe a devoleper on here will read this and possibly come up with a quick patch to get the toggle back. Also I'm still waiting for some reports if this has been fixed in EC05 or not.

Why not just kick off the GPS while taking pics? It's not a major step since it's in the notification drop-down.

I run multiple apps that rely on the GPS being on, when you turn off the GPS some of them crash and result in data loss. RPITA
With DI18 the old 2.1 you had the option to turn it off, and as far as I know most if not all smart phones have it as an option, with default being off not on.

Makes sense. I don't have any apps like that.
I guess it's important for the toggle to exist, even though personally I never understood the fear regarding the data. The phone automatically re-compresses pics for MMS, as do many websites you might upload to. Otherwise, you might do touch-ups on a computer and convert to another format. Does this GPS data even survive these modifications?
Not to negate the issue. I just can't help feeling immediately skeptical over any issue that causes a lot of people to freak the frak out.
Panic, in general, is a good indication of unfounded fear.
It doesn't need gps if you have wireless location on it will geo tag. That's how you turn geo tagging off. Both gps and wireless location must be off that's the only way.

The data will survive anything that retains EXIF data - which is just about everything that handles JPG files. I use Adobe Lightroom and Irfanview on a daily basis; both retain EXIF info (though Lightroom will allow you to edit much of it yourself). I assume Photoshop is the same way.
Converting the file to another format, such as GIF, will strip the EXIF info, since most other formats don't support EXIF data. The GPS coordinates are stored in the EXIF fields.
I just checked some of the pictures uploaded to my Facebook account using the official Facebook for android client - EXIF data was stripped somewhere along the way, probably by the Facebook servers. Uploading to flickr using the 2 flickr apps kept the EXIF info, same when I upload to Dropbox..
If you're taking photos around the house and sharing them online, then I can understand not wanting your home address getting out - particularly if you're female. Someone taking some photos of, say, a new gun, or some jewelry, can also invite theft, if the GPS info were included.
Personally, I'd prefer not to include my GPS coordinates in every photo I take... not because I'm worried about an attack or theft (I'm not a small guy, nor do I own anything particularly valuable), but because I just don't want total strangers knowing where I live.
edit: If you use Windows 7, right click a JPG, select properties, then click the Details tab - you should see "Remove Properties and Personal Information". This will let you strip some/all EXIF info.
This has been bothering me for a while. My goto action was to just use the Win7 stripper as mentioned above, but for some reason it simply doesn't work on pictures taken with my Epic (it works on every other image I've tested). I haven't gone as far as to try other EXIF utilities.
And for the person who says you shouldn't be worried about... well, I have a 480hp car listed on eBay with geo-tagged pictures showing the coordinates within a mile of where the car is stored.
Ok, so my girlfriend is having some problems with her phone and I thought I could swing some of this stuff by the board members for some expertise...
So basically what happened was, she was having some problems with her phone working very slow and getting laggy after compiling way too many text messages on her phone. When she tried to delete some of these text messages the phone wouldn't let her for some weird reason. She then took the phone in to some some sprint store and whoever worked on this thing told her he was going to wipe them directly from the SD card...
Ever since she is having problems where her phone won't even register when someone calls her... no ring, no screen pop-up, but she'll have a missed call notification when she misses the call...
The only other weird thing that I know of is I tried downloading a dj set for her on her phone over a wifi connection (around 55 MB) and it keeps saying download failed... I successfully did this for two other people on their phones as well as my own...
Any help would be appreciated, especially since she will love me to death if I can fix this for her... lol
I would sugest full wipe, that usually fixes lots of issues.
Do backup of her contacts and apps, turn off the phone and start up holding -vol and power bttn. than choose clear storage. That will bring the phone to the original stage like it come out from the box.
no need to backup contacts really they should be stored on her google account
I know she'll ask me this one... will she lose her pictures and stuff???

Pictures are stored on the SD card, so no.
If she has Angry Birds progress she wants to save, there are apps for that and they don't require root.
If she has a ton of apps, that could be slowing her phone down. Have her reinstall apps as she needs them instead of all at once.

Hey guys, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of fix or mod I can do to make my home screen not reload all the time. It's frustrating going into an app for a second and going back to home and having it load which usually takes the majority of the time I have the phone on. Doesn't really matter what app I open, it will even do it coming from settings.
Now I did research this a bit and I don't have any task killers or many widgets on the home screen, to be honest, the stock oem home screen setup has more widgets and whatnot than I do. Can't I increase the cache size or something? Memory space has never been a problem with this phone, in fact I hardly even get over 100mb of used RAM. BTW, every ROM I've flashed has been like this, I'm hoping the stock ROM isn't like this too, its just plain annoying.
Thanks

Which rom do you want to use? You can possibly fix it with certain setting depending on which rom. Also are you just using the stock laucher that comes with each rom? Or do u install a preferred one?

He's talking like he's using Sense. To be clear, are you talking about widgets refreshing like with contacts, bookmarks, locations, weather, and the like? The best way to avoid information and widgets being refreshed all the time is to use as much memory as possible all of the time. What's you're looking at is the result of garbage collection... The kernel is tossing out items from memory that haven't been used in a certain amount of time or are assumed to be "stale" information. That kind of garbage collection is set to expire fairy quickly because the first time your calendar widget waits 2 or 3 hours to update and you missed your appointment or date, you'd really wish it didn't wait so long to refresh that data. I'm not sure what can be done to avoid that being the case, but I know it's been a minor irritation to some for a long time. I'm sure if there was an easy fix we'd have seen it by now from HTC themselves. It's commonly sited in reviews as a weakness of the UI compared to iFone.
Hey there,
Was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this yet.
I am having the same problem. If I enter any app and then go back to the home screen, I get the white screen with the green "HTC" logo, then the background appears and reloads everything. It has gotten to the point that every time I open an app it needs to reload. I recently factory reset and changed the SD card to try and fix it, but no luck.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post, hope there is a fix.
its because the sense roms its happening on arent meant for our device

I have stock sense and it happens to me every so often too. Maybe once a day so its barely noticable but I always wonder why it does it. Seems to be random and like other poster says I'm either backing out of settings or an app then the htc screen appears and the home page resets all the app icons. Only started doing this after the OTA so maybe something to do with memory management as previously stated in another post.

It hasn't done it in a very long time now. At least a week so not sure what was causing it. I did delete some apps, Netflix being one of them, that I no longer used but I never had Netflix running when it did it.
Problem was a task manager/quick launch app that turned my home button into more like an Alt-Tab. I have since reflashed a new Rom and haven't installed a task manager, and no problems at all. Must have been closing launcher causing it to reboot.
