[Q] Omnia 7 on AT&T? - Omnia 7 General

Will the Omnia 7 work on AT&T's 3G service? I think it will by looking at the bands, but I just wanted someone to confirm this for me.
If so, what's the difference between the Omnia 7 and the Focus? I didn't look really closely to the specs but glancing over them looked pretty much identical.
Thanks.

You will get 3G on some of the AT&T basebands. I use an Omnia 7 in California, and have had consistent 3G service in most areas.
The Focus has bad build quality in opinion but has the advantage of having an SD card slot. I like the Omnia 7 considerably more though due to it's great build and metal body.

Is there any way to find out what base bands are more popular in my area?
I know the Focus didn't have great build quality, I had actually owned it awhile back, but sold it and now I kinda miss WP7. Its just simple and works. I love Android, my Captivate hasn't failed me yet, but flashing ROMs gets old eventually. Its nice to hear the Omnia 7 has great build quality though.
EDIT: I just found this site, I'm in the Houston, Texas area so it looks like I would be safe since the phone uses 1900mhz for 3G.

Anyone in USA really concerned about losing 3G?

Like many of us I've been salivating at the prospect of the HD's large screen and, having decided that as good as my Touch Pro keyboard is, I don't use it enough to hold out for an HD with a keyboard (if there is even one in the roadmap). But..... I'm still smarting at not having 3G on my Touch Pro (and I know our XDA-Developers team may yet lick that limitation) so I'm seriously questioning whether I should go for the HD knowing it may never have 3G capability in the USA. Anyone else share this concern?
My need for 3G is about 10% of its total use...and my Edge network isn't exactly a snails pace. My Raphael is the best phone I've ever had, and I truly enjoy the ability to customize it. I am jumping ship and getting the HD without second thought. If the Elite team cracks the 3G...that's just the icing on the perfect raphael cake I have.

yeah, ummm, no 3G coverage here, don't care, lol. your 10%, well I am about 1%, just when I travel and can't hardly tell a difference anyway. Two things: Either the HTC rep that gave us bad news about the arrival of Blackstone in US is not telling the truth or doesn't know the truth to tell it. OR..... HTC really has the wrong idea about consumers in the US. Surely they realize that we want the device because of the many other improvements that it brings. The improvements in performance and the killer screen does it for me. I have owned PDA phone after PDA phone starting with the old Verizon xv6600, which by the way has a large screen compared to kaiser and many others and I know a breakthrough when I see one. If they really don't plan to release this device, then they had better be working on a 3G version with or without a sliding keyboard that runs windows mobile 7. If their really going to skip around generations and stuff, that wm7 device better arrive on time and on par with the iPhone in refinement and usability. They should make a device that people don't really need to cook ROMs to be satisfied with. Do it right the first time, don't take backwards steps, don't take baby steps either. Turn one foot directly in front of the other, in full force and confidence; the smart way. I want it now!

I go all over the USA daily while driving my truck, and I've noticed that I get the big [H] in every 3G area I come to, so 3G is very important for me, but I'm still going to retire my Polaris when the HD comes out. I'll just hope and pray daily that someone figures out how to give us 3G...
Doesnt matter to me.
Only time I use it is if I accidentally update my weather application.

We finally got 3G here when I live in Millsboro Delaware. After installing Solace I to get the Big H now. I was either dumb or confussed. LOL However after the good people on here explained that H is better then 3G I was delighted. Not sure why. Called ATT said it was a little better, well faster and was fine for me to use with my unlimited plan.
Solace 1.5 is so smooth I just can't believe that I'd think of getting or replacing my Tilt. I think I finally found the phone for me.
Beachboyde/Jon
I switched from the Tytn 2 over to the Diamond not too long ago. I gave up 3G for slimmer form factor. I barely notice the difference. Maybe occasionally when I use YouTube or Opera, I wish I had a faster connection, but my day to day use of corporate push email is unaffected.
I would like to see the XDA pros open up 3G on these phones, but I feel the features are worth living with EDGE.
...but then again, I've been tempted to pick up a Slingbox lately too. Not sure I'd trust Slingplayer running on E.

So does that mean I'm no longer the stalker...but now you are?
T-mobile USA has 1700 Mhz and 2100 MHz frequencies for 3G support.
This is what I got from their website
--------------------------------------------------------------------
What frequency does your 3G network support?
Our 3G network supports both the 1700MHz and 2100MHz frequencies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So... I'll try 3G there once I get mine....
3G or no 3G
I have a Touch Diamond with no 3G (edge only) and one with 3G. (the big H) .
To me, not a big enough difference to worry about. The Edge connection is actually fast enough for me. May a half sec. difference in connection to web pages. Im getting the Touch HD. Besides most of the time I'm on wifi anyway. No big deal
So what exactly determines if we can get 3G in the US? Is it the radio? I have never quite understood this part.

Not determined yet. The Elite team in the Raphael ROM forum does admit there is different hardware. They have connected to the US 3G, but don't think it is stable. They haven't finalized their research as of yet, but sure some more information will be coming shortly.

ok so it is hardware inside the phone that differs between US and EU 3G?
So if the bands on the specs page of the phone list US bands then it should be good to go?
Not trying to hyjack the thread I am just curious.
i will be getting an HD and droppign the touch pro... i think

As far sas i heard. its the onboard chip that does the differents. HTC said that on some of the old phones, where it got hacked and worked with 3G, hardware was there but not activated. thats why the people here could get it to work. But HTC stated that this is not the case in the HD. THey said that the HD can not be hacked to work with 3G, as it is not possible hardware wise for the HD to recieve 3g signals on the USA network
i believe i said this already once but its more of a matter of just the antennas and if they can recieve the usa 3g bands or not. the actual chipset i know can use the bands its a matter or just enabling them.
I thought the 3g put a 3g icon not the big h? Thats how it shows on my friends tilt. Me i have not had 3g ever since i have used at&t lol cause i had the wizard and now the wing. Does 3g affect call performance or just data, if so i could care less about 3g then. Although i would rather no pay the premium price on the hd buying from europe
AT&T has HSUPA but you have to activate it in the settings.

Should I sell my nexus S for a G2??

Convince me. The stainless Steele body is appealing to me. I don't really see a difference in the processor speeds, and the full keyboard is appealing. Battery life on my nexus s is unimpressive however and I've heard that the nexus s packs a bigger battery. Can anyone persuad me????

I'll trade you my g2 fo the nexus s ;].
In terms of screens most would probably like the nexus s screens more since its more vibrant <--- LOL.. colorful and all that smack. However the g2's screen would likely to be sharper than the nexus s. All depends on what you are using it for. Nexus s's screen would be better than g2 if you were doing multimedia, but g2 is probably better for reading text and etc.
EDIT: I would like to note that once you feel the g2's build you most likely won't want to let go of it. Just feels so solid. I took my cases off the g2 because I missed the feeling of the actual phone
The G2? Why not wait for a dualcore phone? hehe.

Finally gave up on ATT getting any decent Android devices. Well, the Fascinate seems OK, but lots of complaints on these forums (and elsewhere) about various things. Plus, the outlook for new devices in the first part of next year does not look very promising either. And I've always been a big HTC fan. I found out that Bell Canada released the HTC Desire Z about a month ago, with 3G bands compatible with ATT's network. I decided to take the plunge. Not an easy pill to swallow, as an unlocked, unsubsidized device like this goes for a premium (and obviously not for everyone). But what the heck, its a been a good year, and I decided to get myself a Christmas gift.
For those that may not know, and are interested in the Desire Z, the Bell-branded NAM version, model number A7275 is currently the only one that will work with ATT's 3G network. The European and T-Mobile (the G2) versions will only work on EDGE. So take care when shopping around.
Let me tell you guys, this device is amazing. The build quality is excellent, with most of the body being a gorgeous brushed aluminum, accented with some slightly grippy plastic (also nice looking, and does not cheapen the appearance). The keyboard is very good. The layout is slightly different from my trusty old Tilt2, with the keys slightly smaller (and one less row of keys). But after one week with the device, I'm already adjusting quite well.
I've played around with Project Android on my trusty old Tilt2, so Android is not completely new to me. I'm still getting accustomed to where some things are located, but that is true with switching to any new phone OS. Knocks on Android for not being as "smooth" as the iPhone seem largely unfounded to me. The Desire Z is super smooth, and of course has tons of customization and functionality that the iPhone will never have. And the HTC Sense modifications are all very nice.
TO get the phone up and running, I just had to slip my SIM into the device, and manually enter in the ATT data network APN settings (only had WiFi before I did this), and was good to go with 3G speed. I already keep my contacts, email, calendar on Google. So the Google implementation is awesome for me. I just entered my Google login and password, and it synched all that stuff in a couple minutes.
The vendor stated on their website that SIM unlocking voids the manufacturers warranty. So I decided to go ahead and root, the day after I received the phone (and now overclocked, as well). Also used a couple different tools (Titanium Backup and Absolute System Root Tool) to successfully remove the Bell bloatware. The Bell ROM is missing the HTC Locations app (I use Google Maps all the time anyway), and the Android car panel (which I don't really like), but otherwise, the Bell ROM is pretty close to stock. So I'll stick with the stock ROM for now.
Moral of the story, no regrets buying an unlocked Desire Z. Absolutely loving it!
....
I highlighted in red above the exact model you need to buy for it to work on AT&T 3g network and I remember reading somewhere else that it has to be this exact model number, I think it was in a thread here on xda developers and they gave a link on where to but it from, Ill try and find it for you, but in the mean time heres the link for the site I got the above thread from.

I find HTC's build quality to be much better that Samsung's. The heft and the feeling of the desire z, is what originally won me over when I was debating between it and the samsung vibrant.

I purchased mine from Ebay. I believe Negri Electronics also sells it online. It'll run you in the neighborhood of $500-600.
I'm selling my Nexus for a G2. I'm going to make at least $250, and the G2 seems at least equal to or better than the Nexus in every category except the screen. I can sacrifice the SAMOLED for a SLCD for $250 (plus the added benefits like a non-plastic body, 4G, a keyboard, and a notification LED).

Man. I was considering selling my G2 and picking up a Nexus S, but this thread has pretty much gotten rid of that idea. What do you guys think about the MT4G, though? I am still considering picking up that one and dumping the G2. (Still haven't gotten accustomed to the keyboard.)
I'm baffled why anyone would want a myTouch over a G2.
Just saying that dumbass name pisses me off. myTouch. ugggggh
However, I wouldn't mind having a Nexus S to play with. I don't think I'd ever give up my G2 though. <3

Yeah, when I first decided to buy a new phone a couple of weeks ago, I just figured the myTouch was a ****ty phone based on its name and was going with the G2 for sure, but then I learned that it certainly competes hardware-wise...and coming from an iPhone 3G, I would very possibly be more comfortable with its form factor.
Lighter and smaller, too. I suppose if this "mirror" tool ends up working well so I can video chat with the G2, that will solve my last big problem. Anyone think that will pan out?

Does LG make good 3G radios?

I currently own the galaxy nexus and thinking about upgrading to the Nexus 4 if it will get a stronger 3g signal. I havent owned any recent LG smartphones, my last LG smartphone i had was the Optimus One, so i have no idea how it is now. Maybe someone with an LG from 2012 esp Optimus G owners can help me out it would be appreciated. I just want to make sure i get something better than samsung's crappy radios since i live in an area with weak 3g signal.
Maybe you need a new carrier and not so much a new phone. A new phone can't make a signal any better than the towers are making.

Switching carriers isn't a feasible option for me right now and wouldn't make much of a difference in my area. I know the phones can only do so much with a weak signal but I've owned Samsung, HTC and Motorola smartphones and i can say without a doubt that not all phones are equal in terms of signal reception.
My Atrix has one of the strongest signal in any phone that i used unlike my Captivate or gsm Galaxy Nexus. I've read that Motorola uses two antennae which make their phones the best for signal reception. I was hoping Motorola was going to make the next nexus. Blackberry also makes very good radios too. I dont have much experience with LG and was wondering how their phones stack up.
My previous phone to the gnex was an LG myTouch Q. I used it on the same T-Mobile account in the same area under the same conditions. It does have better reception than the gnex. Whether that will also be true of the Nexus 4, I can't say.

Nexus 4 vs. HTC One X+ (AT&T)

I currently have the Nexus 4 16GB on AT&T and the lack of LTE is starting to get to me, HSPA+ is pretty lame where I live and it's an LTE area. Thinking about replacing it with the HTC One X+.
The One X+ is starting to get custom ROMs and there's work being done on an ASOP ROM for the pure Android experience.
Anyone here who went the other way, from the HTC One X, One X+ or another AT&T LTE phone to the Nexus 4?
I went from one x to N4. Love it, wouldn't go back... But I have been getting 8-12 Mbps down on HSPA+ (they just switched on LTE last month here in Denver.... Before that I was lucky to get 4Mbps down on HSPA+).
I tried out the One X+ in store, much quicker and more storage than the One X (probably due to JB).
Still, won't go back. Love the N4! Keep in mind, I be going to AT&T prepaid in March, so no LTE doesn't matter for me... Plus, I've been getting upwards of 12Mbps with this phone.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
My main problem is not so much the speed, though I've only seen it go up to about 6Mbps (I do use the "phone" APN, so it's not the APN setting), but rather the signal which is pretty crappy here in tmy area. I'm hoping that LTE would have better coverage.
Otherwise the N4 is a sweet phone. Would it really have killed them to throw an LTE chip in there that users could turn off if not interested in LTE? Well, OK, I know there's an LTE chip in there that works only on some band in Canada. I guess I can move to Canada (or to a better HSPA+ area).
The One X+ might look great now, but also remember that when the next tegra phone HTC puts out that blows the One X+ away you will no longer get support from HTC. The N4 gives you the feeling that you could keep the phone for 2 years or more and not have to really think you are going to be left behind at all. Look at the Nexus One i am pretty sure that still has Dev support and how old is that phone. Over all i feel the N4 is one of the best choices right now to have. If you really want LTE change to T-Mobile so you can get good HSPA+ right now and get LTE in 6 months when they have that out. LTE that is with changing settings I also give up on NV when it comes to phones. Look at the Tegra 2 it hasn't gotten anything since the Tegra 3 has been out. Its not like computers where NV supports their stuff for years. When you look at the Tegra Apps most if not close to 90% of them are Tegra 3 only which is BS. Thanks NV for leaving my Xoom behind.

Keep in mind, an LTE chip would have likely increased the cost of the phone. Sure people would have still bought, but they might have been trying to hit the price points they did. Plus the HSPA+ is more ubiquitous across the world than LTE.
Fwiw, I'm getting better signal with this phone than I did with my one x.

So how does it work with something like the One X+ and the efforts that are under way for AOSP custom ROMs? Can they keep moving forward from Jelly Bean when Google releases the next Android version or do they needs some sort of support from HTC in terms of drivers and other closed source components? I'm not asking about the Sense UI, just the feasibility of having the next Android version work on the One X+. Looks like the current custom ROMs are all based on 4.1.1

I would get N4 because it is looks faster than OneX+ and will get updated faster. But I have no mobile coverage in my area so I have to go with AT&T

GS4 vs HTC One: Direct radio comparison?

I've had an HTC One since August, and while I love the speakers and build quality, the LTE reception has been marginal and the CDMA call quality sucks. Long story short, I have someone offering to trade me their Galaxy S4 straight up for my One. Both are in mint condition. I was considering eventually swapping for a Nexus 5 with the tri-band radios, but this offer has me considering otherwise. Has anyone had the opportunity to do side-by-side comparisons of the S4 and One in LTE active areas? I don't want this to turn into a fan-boy rant-fest... just looking for honest opinions of the test results.
Thanks in advance!
Samsung phones in general always have better radio reception. I've had all Galaxy's from the 1-3 + Note 2 and all HTC's from the Evo, Evo 3d and Evo Lte. As far as reception they're pretty much on par on 3g. However in regards to 4g all my Samsung phones outshined the HTC phones. Back with WiMAX my S2 would always have one bar extra than the Evos or the Galaxy would get 4G while the HTC would be stuck on 3G, whether it was the GS1 vs the Evo 4G or the GS2 vs the 3D, the reception was always similar with Samsung on top. With my GS3 n Note 2 I would always have lte were my Evo Lte would only register 3G. Till this day my sister has my Evo Lte and she has yet to register 4G in places were I do with my Galaxy Note. Judging from all the reviews and customer feedback of the S4 and One nothing has pretty much changed. The One struggles with 4G just like the Evo Lte did while S4 always comes out on top in regards to reception, especially 4G lte. I honestly think its the different set up HTC uses. Their timers under the lte dialer codes are tweaked a bit differently for Lte.
