If you ask me, it looks too far from the current Dell Streaks that it shouldn't be called a "Streak" at all. It just looks like a phone where as the Streak is known for having a portrait tablet-esque slim form factor.
Dell did the same with their netbooks, made a unique, ground breaking first model, then after that all the other models just conformed to what other manus products looked/felt like.

Dunhamzzz, thanks for that informative article! So THATS what Mikey Dell's been up to! Redesigning the Streak altogether and what a mess as far as physical body. WHY take away what we loved about the Streak like it body AND 5inches! (heh heh).. Why leave well enough alone but add the dual core, and other operational upgrades needed? I dont like the new model regardless of its internal upgrades

What would be the definition of being in it's family? Similar hardware, software?
Externally body:
The Streak 5 is externally similar to the Streak 7
The Streak 7 is externally similar to the Streak 10.
The Streak 5 and Streak 10 are not too similar looking when compared to eachother.
The Streak pro does not resemble any other device closely beyond the camera/led lozenge.
It's backing material/texture MAY resemble the Streak 7's, I have not had much hands on time with the 7
The venue does not resemble the others in any way
Hardware specs:
The Streak 5 is a 1st gen snapdragon
The Streak 7 is a Tegra2
The Streak 10 is a Tegra2
The Streak pro is a 3rd gen snapdragon
The venue is a 1st gen snapdragon
Manufacturers:
The S5 and S7 and venue manufactured by qisda
the s10 is manufactured by pegatron
The streak pro is unknown,
Software:
All 5 devices share StageUI
The S5, S7, venue all share the same codebase.
The S10 only shares a small amount of code beyond StageUI.
Do I consider them all a family? Yes. They all share too much in common.
If you want to nitpick then you might as well say the S5 and S7 are not even in the same family. They're physically not too similar beyond the tapered bumpers. Their softbuttons arnt similar, the S7 and Venue use the same soft button icons.
The S10 is a generic looking 10.1" tab from the front, and aluminium backed in the back.
I believe the Spro and the S7 share the same texturing for their backs, but I'm not 100% sure.
The S5 is also a snapdragon and S7 is a tegra2, they're about as different as you can get.
NONE of the dell devices are part of a single uniform design unless you count the venue/venue pro.
Ultimately my criteria is if it contains StageUI. Even if dell doesnt mention the venue as being in the streak family it's virtually hardware and software identical to the S5. The venue is literally a Streak 4.1 +AMOLED.
From a logical standpoint the Spro would be more properly labeled a Venue2 or something (as the venue pro is a wp7 device)
But keep this in mind, the venue has no strength behind it's name unlike the streak (though the streak isnt exactly well known either) it's likely marketing. Creating a 3rd brand isnt gonna help much either.
Nonodys nickpicking. The poster said that the new "Dell streak pro" looks nothing like the dell dtreak 5 . The 5 inch screen is smaller and the body uniqueness all but dissapeared.
How do I know the poster of this string is referring to the streak 5 as "family comparison"? Because neither the 7 or 10 made phone calls. I agree with the original poster. Despite all of its upgraded internal features, the streak is changed on other ways that made it different "from other phones"...shedding its tablet feature for sure.
That wasnt targeting you or anyone, it's all directed to the hypotheical reader.
The most likely reason it's named a streak is for the strength of the brand, ie starting with something > starting all over

You know what? You are absolutely correct. I didnt think of it that way , as starting anew with the brand name.
I totally am.sorry if it sounded offensive, wasnt meant that way
Sorry, screen is too small. 4.3"? I looked at a Samsung SG2 Sunday, and although the screen is BRIGHT, giving up the extra .7" would be hard to do.
Resolution isn't what it should be either.
I gyess Dell has decided to stop trying to innovate, and just focus on products that look identical to everything else out there (7 inch tab, 10 inch tab, Dell streak Pro).
Maybe if the SG Note is successful, Dell will make another 5" tablet/phone.

It's a total mistake. 5" Display is the best with awesome performance.
That's what makes Dell Streak 5 is the unique one.
4'3" is a total mistake.
I hate Michael Dell when he shut down Streak unit back there.

Recently got Galaxy s2 and I was getting bored with dell streak
I am still debating which phone to keep
Here are my impressions.
Main thing I find different
First the most imp thing - There is nothing out there in the market at this time that can compete with our 5inch screen
Screen : Miss 5" Dellscreen ( SGS2 has 4.27inch screen ) . Miss the fun of reading emails, browsing pages and articles . This has been the biggest dissappointment for me so far. However Quality of the screen is better in GS2 with more vivid colors
If u r into documents and editing streak will kick SGS2 in the ass.
Speed : To tell the truth , I have not seen much difference . My dell streak running 354 stock had no issues with speed. I will say SGS2 is slightly faster but i dont think it makes any difference. Aint there a limit to speed ?
Battery : I think its the same. May be SGS2 consumes more ( There are reports of many people having high battery drain)
Warranty : Had so much peace of mind with streak as I had US warranty.
SGS2 in US has European warranty. Will have to see how things will work, if i need it.
What makes SGS2 better
Feel in the hand : This SGS2 wins handdown. Very light weight and thin. Very easy for one hand operation. However, the build is not great. Plasticy feeling. I dont feel as if i am using a high end device. I feels like a toy
Camera : any day better. I thing i hated in streak , is its camera
Video chat with gtalk is now possible. ( very useful for me )
Internal storage is 16 gb . Now i have a total of 48gb to play with ( however 32gb card on dellstreak was plenty enough.
Support : Now i feel what the android development community is like. Dell streak only has steve and his teams support. They are probably the best , however l am loving the contribution from many developers.
The best thing is samsung has given 5 handsets to all the cyanogen developers for development for free... I wish dell did the same thing to our developers.
CWM support is default . Meaning flashing from recovery is a breeze. U can run cwm app and all is done.
Ports : micro usb is standard.
Here is the best thing OTG support for external usb is default.
Loving the fact that i can connect any usb drive, keyboard or mouse to my phone. Wont be doing this every day but love the idea.
Accessories : Are now sparse but hopefully will get better.
There are some apps in samsung like reading hub that I think is useful. Touch wiz is no go for me.
Finally
- There have been many reports about battery drain, yellow tinge on the screen, pink spot in camera , etc > However i was lucky not to see any of it so far.
- I also believe that any 5" screen phone will never get the same user base and hence developer support as some of the other smaller form facor phones.
To conclude :Inspite of the positives of SGS2 i listed, I still believe that dell streak annouced more than an year ago is a beast device. I am still debating , but looks like I will keep my new expensive toy.
If u have questions thrown them at me.
"The best thing is samsung has given 5 handsets to all the cyanogen developers for development for free."
Wow! I will write to Dell if they can do the same. Never know until you will ask
The streak is a discontinued item. Dell won't do anything for an old device when they barely cared for it when it was new.

I have had the Streak since the day it was released last year. The screen size is fantastic and I am generally very happy with it. But now I have had enough of a phone that's too big for my pocket and bought the SGS2. I miss the big screen and the nice screen density of the streak but I will learn to live without them. I also have a galaxy tab 7 which I use when i want a big screen experience.
The story so far....
G1
Milestone
Streak
Galaxy Tab 7
Galaxy S2
to be continued ;-)

The streak had been discontinued by att in april/may. I haven't seen one in the 6 best buys in the area in the last 6 months. So other than dell(leftover stock), what retailer sells the device? I only see no name places on amazon mobile. The advertising/support for the streak 5 was crap when it was sold by att so why would dell all of a sudden commit harder to the phone when it's life is basically over?
It's a great phone but dell screwed up from the start by not getting the device proper exposure.

In my Illinois Best Buy near St Louis, they still had black Streaks in stock in mid May. They still had the operational model on display. The model wasn't out last week, but I didn't ask if they still had any in stock.
I paid 2400rmb for my streak, that is 2200rmb lower then galaxy s2 right now.So may be I should just sell my kidney for a little bit improvement?

The Streak is more comparable to the Samsung Infuse's 4.5 inch screen. I've moved to the Infuse because of the better screen, better camera, and better speakers. The Infuse stock ROM is faster than Dell's stock. The Infuse also easily last me a whole day with moderate usage.
I don't recommend the streak anymore, specially after all the comments related to broken screens, the screen is also sensitive to humidity,static...no way.I would go with the Galaxy S2 but I think I am gonna go with the Infuse.I know the Galaxy is better but I got kind tired of buying the latest toy....there's always "the latest toy" plus if I buy the infuse I save $200.
with 5" screen, Streak's stil the best except you want other kind of tablet replacement with bigger dimension as GTab or ipad, etc
I prefer galaxy s2 than dell streak.
I'm probably going with the s2 this fall/early winter...the streak (for me) will be year old in November. Being single, with no bills, it's nice to be able to have the latest once a year or so
I can live with .5" smaller screen, at the same resolution, dual core, 2.3/.4, and (hopefully) a larger mod community.
Dell & at&t dropped the ball on this one. If the Streak2 came out with an AMOLED screen, I'd give it a look, but it sounds like it will have the same style LCD screen as the current streak.
Friend of mine as the galaxy and the BRIGHTNESS of the screen is just unbelievable, so with the "super" AMOLED screen for the S2, it should be even better.
It will be hard though, to get use to people NOT saying "that is your PHONE" when I pull the streak out of the belt pouch I carry it in
A piece of friendly advice:don't expect too much for amoled, the colour is unnatural, the power saving is not worth mention, and the worst part is,reading text on amoled/super amoled is a pain in the ass.
That's why galaxy s2 uses super amoled plus.Still,I would prefer slcd rather than amoled family.

I still love my Streak, and am going to stick with it. Because of the tracking issues with the iPhone, my wife wants to get rid of her 3GS. We will replace it with the S2. The release date for the U.S. is supposedly Jul 2011.
I just go my S2 today.
So far I love it. There may be a Streak for sale soon.
I do miss the 5" screen, but the S2 has a 4.3 and it is sooooo much more portable than the Streak.
I do love my Streak though.
If I sell, I am sure I will take a look at the Opus.
Later
The Best Buy near me had none on display, and was also out of stock. I checked BB on line as well, and no Streaks were available there either. I may try to pick-up another to have on the side, as I don't want to go to a smaller screen size when this one dies. I have no problem putting the Streak in any pants pocket front or rear, I have sat down with it in my back pocket and have had no issues with screen fragility. Basically, I love this device and I'm disappointed that it won't be readily available much longer...
For the four of you who might actually care T-Mobile has officially discontinued the Dell Streak 7 tablet and Dell Mini 10 HSPA+ capable netbook. The Dell Streak 7 was introduced back in January during CES and was quickly overshadowed by the upcoming G-Slate. Met with mixed reviews the Streak never took off as T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet and the Dell Mini 10 appealed to the Netbook loving crowd who unfortunately got tempted by the sudden rise of tablets. In any case both devices have met their inevitable end on T-Mobile and we bid them farewell. They are gone and mostly already forgotten.

Dell really needs to step their game up. Can't they see that their customers aren't happy with their products?
Actually as a Dell customer I am very happy with my Dell products. I accept that they have some flaws though.
The Streak 7 needed a better screen and advertisement.
The Streak 5 needed to open with 2.2 and advertisment.
Both devices could have been really big wins for Dell, but Dell squandered the hype generated around the initial launches with poor communication to the buying public.
Well on that note I love my dell streak but seems that in the real world dell products ain't doing to well. For T-Mobile to drop dell is a pretty big thing.

Correct. Problem is Dell sucks at advertising....
The Dell Streak 5 would of sold a hell of a lot more if it was ADVERTISED!!!
I'm surprised at the amount of people who have never heard of it.
Infact EVERYONE I know have never even heard of it....
When friends, colleagues at work & even strangers see my Streak, they ask:
1 - What is that? Is that a laptop?
2 - Is it Dell? I never knew dell make phones
3 - Is it Lg or Samsung?
4 - Is it a large tablet?
5 - Is it Apple ipad?
Truth is Dell sucks at design, advertising, build quality and customer support
If I wasn't into hacking/modding I would hate the streak. If I didn't know about things such as launcher pro or other aftermarket launchers I would hate the streak because stage is so buggy and limited. Besides the few hundred streak owners who visit xda and other forums, I'm sure anyone else who bought the streak was probably displeased. Dell is in trouble if they can't up their quality, updates, etc. otherwise they'll never catch on in the mobile world.

It isn't necessary to do a lot of hacking/modding to get a very enjoyable device out of the Streak. Replacing the Stage home app would do it for most people. Rooting and getting rid of the unnecessary stuff would be the nest thing I would do (especially if on an AT&T locked device).
We have owned five Android phones (seven if you count my brief defetion to US Cellular) and my wife's current HTC Inspire is the only one that I haven't needed to tweak. BTW - the Inspire is still running Android 2.1, so Dell has updated the Streak to a later version of Android than what is arguably the best Android device that AT&T currently sells has. I don't see the reason for the complaints about the lack of updates. Of course I did not buy the Streak when it shipped with 1.6, so I didn't have that 6-7 month wait for the first updates to roll out.
I also think that the build quality of the Streak stands up to other phones I have owned or tried out.
My Streak came, carrier unlocked, with Android 2.2 and with the updates that Dell has put out it would be a very good device even with no tweaking. Like many - one of the reasons I like Android is that I can tweak/customize my phone easily.
Good point, Marvin...... My Streak is also factory-unlocked with factory-installed Froyo.... only thing I've done to it was to immediately delete Dell's "Stage" widgets and install "Launcher Pro" (to increase the number of shortcuts on home pages)... and I'm VERY pleased with my non-rooted Streak..
I've two horrifying experiences with "rooted" phones (both phones would eat through a fully-charged battery in less than 3-hours)..... and all for what, a millisecond faster response time? Frankly I just don't see the point, especially if it's your primary, high-investment-dollar phone (but I do have fun swapping ROMS on an old "backup" HD2 I have) LOL

I just read on Forbes' website that Dell will be building "tablet-phones, based on the Streak 5", for Baidu Yi (Baidu Yi is the Chinese equivalent of Google (China's predominate internet search engine). The article went on to say the new OS will be Android-based, but will be stripped of all Google services (but will still run Android Marketplace apps).
This is great news for us.... China has, by far the largest mobile device/phone user base.... much larger than the U.S., so further development for our devices from Dell may actually happen (can't hurt, right?)

Hey Htc..... THAT'S GREAT!!! I'm hoping Dell will have more Streak success in other parts of the world so they don't abandon the 5-inch platform in future development.... It's like Grandpa H used to say.... "the pioneers take all of the arrows but they also get all of the land" With larger-screened phones becoming more the trend nowadays, I'm confident Dell would do much better with a "Streak 2" (provided they advertise it and above ALL else, make it available on other carriers in addition to aTnT)

Its ironic that Dell decides to drop the Streak 5 in the U.S. only when other carriers are stocking 5" screen devices. I cant recall any other phone device that was yanked from the u.s. Market only. Still cant get what dell was thinking!
I wonder if that's why Samsung has "No plans" to release the Note in the US- because the streak apparently failed...

I have a streak, and it:
-doesn't look very good,
-doesn't feel very good in your hands if its not in landscape because of its curves and weight ,
-it doesn't have a particularly good screen either.
But I love it! -and that doesn't mean it ticks Everyone's boxes. The only box it Ticks for me is the: Big Screen, and Thats it! If they'd change these things, I'm sure it would of been a hit!
Samsung saying they have no plans for The Note in the us does not meat they wont sell it in the US.
Well zsolt, I happen to like the appearance of my Streak as do others, because I'm constantly complimented by people who say how cool my phone looks..... and I pretty much always use it in portrait mode. Maybe you have unusually small hands or I'm the true freak here However, I do agree the screen resolution could be higher....

Well, now that I've had my Streak for several months, I may be trading it for a 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab (running the working phone ROM). It's everything the Streak is, plus some (bigger screen and nearly twice the battery life). Slightly less pocketable, but now that I'm semi-retired, the slightly larger form factor won't pose of a problem as before.
If I do trade, I'll come back and let everyone know how it's working out.....

I have both of these(well my wife uses the tab usually as it's more handbag size whereas the streak can fit into most pockets - I assume you have had a play around with the tab and are happy with the extra weight/bulk. The battery doesn't last as long as it perhaps should being a 4400mAh unit(I think from memory...) and you need to take phone apart to replace it if it goes faulty though I would not discourage you too much from changing your phone and would be interested to hear how you are getting on with it after a few weeks! By the way we are running the kratos overcome rom ver 3.10 or 3.0.1 as I think they are basically the same.

Apparently, our Streak is the first Android device to be officially supported for accessing secure government data. Too little, too late?
It would be nice to think that taking that into consideration that DELL would maybe continue development on the Streak...
Or maybe even go as far as to actually continue work on that dual core Opus One that we all have yearned for.
The Galaxy Note at 5.3" is just a little on the big side, although I haven't had one in my hands, but my Streak is the perfect size.

Comparison of the two:
Galaxy Note xxxxxx Dell Streak
5.78 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 6.02
3.27 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 3.11
0.38 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 0.40
Metric:
146.85 xxxxxxxxxxx 153
82.95 xxxxxxxxxxxx 79
9.65 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 10
Other than the Galaxy Note being 0.16" or 3.95mm wider it is smaller overall, but packs a bigger screen.

I think it's just another example of how Dell is missing out on a huge opportunity.
Kinda Expected
I can say this.. Dell has a play in the DoD for sure... Trust me..
With regards to the OP:
Engadget demoed the venue having the same software loaded a couple weeks back, as the S5 and venue are really similar it's prob the same software set.
I guess it makes sense that they want to look for a US based company for this since it simpilifies policy vs using a foreign company's products (assuming they use it at all)
There arnt many US based device manus afterall, moto and dell are pretty much the only game in town. The Streak isnt particularly secure though, it's bootloader is unencrypted/not-locked.
Though still this doesnt make that much sense: the S5/7/venue are manufactured and maintained by qisda, which is a taiwanese company. I cant say for sure which does what exactly software wise but qisda does most of the rom, but I doubt that dell does it by themselves 100% stateside.
I dont know how moto does it but dell isnt 100% usa designed, though dell austin was the lead at least in the initial design ( i think)
