Streak's not dead!! - Streak 5 General

I just read on Forbes' website that Dell will be building "tablet-phones, based on the Streak 5", for Baidu Yi (Baidu Yi is the Chinese equivalent of Google (China's predominate internet search engine). The article went on to say the new OS will be Android-based, but will be stripped of all Google services (but will still run Android Marketplace apps).
This is great news for us.... China has, by far the largest mobile device/phone user base.... much larger than the U.S., so further development for our devices from Dell may actually happen (can't hurt, right?)

I'm sure the Streak will sell better there than here in the US.... just because the market is about 4x larger (unless Dell overprices it). Who knows, maybe one day there will be a Streak 2

Take a look at this.
http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/9/5/dell-planning-streak-5-successor/

Hey Htc..... THAT'S GREAT!!! I'm hoping Dell will have more Streak success in other parts of the world so they don't abandon the 5-inch platform in future development.... It's like Grandpa H used to say.... "the pioneers take all of the arrows but they also get all of the land" With larger-screened phones becoming more the trend nowadays, I'm confident Dell would do much better with a "Streak 2" (provided they advertise it and above ALL else, make it available on other carriers in addition to aTnT)
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium

Its ironic that Dell decides to drop the Streak 5 in the U.S. only when other carriers are stocking 5" screen devices. I cant recall any other phone device that was yanked from the u.s. Market only. Still cant get what dell was thinking!

I wonder if that's why Samsung has "No plans" to release the Note in the US- because the streak apparently failed...

Let's Be Honest!
I have a streak, and it:
-doesn't look very good,
-doesn't feel very good in your hands if its not in landscape because of its curves and weight ,
-it doesn't have a particularly good screen either.
But I love it! -and that doesn't mean it ticks Everyone's boxes. The only box it Ticks for me is the: Big Screen, and Thats it! If they'd change these things, I'm sure it would of been a hit!
Samsung saying they have no plans for The Note in the us does not meat they wont sell it in the US.

Well zsolt, I happen to like the appearance of my Streak as do others, because I'm constantly complimented by people who say how cool my phone looks..... and I pretty much always use it in portrait mode. Maybe you have unusually small hands or I'm the true freak here However, I do agree the screen resolution could be higher....

Streak again?

So with rumours of streak 2 floating around, have you had a good enough experience to get the second incarnation?
I think I would buy the streak 2 so long as its the only 5" phone. Im sure they will address some of the build issues and if they could refine the form ever so slightly and improve the rear speaker it could be perfect.
Its worth addidng this was my first android phone and I found the streak a great platform for the android os, I would only consider an android phone next time.

I feel the same way. I went from an N97 to a htc hero, which hooked me on Androids openness, and now with the Streak, im hooked on the 5 inch screen. I had a play with a friends desire(sounds bad lol) yesterday, and its just ....SO small. I dont think I could comfortably go back to such a small screen.
I would definitely buy the streak 2, with the improvements youve mentioned. My only hope, and this is nothing against Steve(I think 1.7 is fab), is that I hope that there would be one or two more rom devs for it.
The only other thing that vaguely interests me is the samsung Tab, but the fact that its Samsung puts me off. Lack of official updates, etc.
needs 4g
much better cameras
working video chat program
better battery cover door
kickstand
a touchwiz feature of having extended controls in the notification area to easily disable wifi, bluetooth, etc
separate video chip.
Agree with all the above statements...would gladly buy this form factor again but if htc made one it would be hard to pass up and I would probably say bye to dell

Yup...yup...yup
Best phone I've ever owned. I'm not saying it's perfect but it is the best. I want a 7" screen with 3G phone function, without having to hack it. As long as this is the largest screen I can get with a phone, I will keep buying them. It's well worth the money.
I'll buy the streak 2 if it has..
A simple LED notification light would be awesome...
microUSB instead of PDMI would be nice (but probably will loose HDMI out? I don't use that anyways)
Better front camera (something that works better with low light scenarios as I go out at night a lot )
Yeah everything mentioned here are much needed improvements. Ill be in the o2 shop the day the streak 2 is out, but ill give it more of an inspection before I make the purchase.

yes, I think I want another tabletphone about 6-7", has to have better resolution, maybe 1080, better FFC, dual core, and more than 512MB RAM.
if streak 5 ver.2 is anywhere close to this, I will def. consider it, but might wait for a tab2 with phone support hack.

Dell Streak Successor?

Can anyone recommend a worthy successor to this awesome phone? I'm going to miss it's big screen.
Dell really didn't market this phone the way they should have.
I think everyone is missing the boat.
A phone this size with a smooth fast ROM with the latest Android OS would sell like hot cakes.
This phone is the reason I hardly use my iPad. Dell nailed it with the size.
I'm a Dell Streak 5 user too and I agree with you that Dell should invest on advertisements and support for Streak.
As a replacement , most of the new high-end coming devices ( HTC Sensation , Samsung Galaxy S2 , ...etc ) are 4.3 inch screens. they should do a good job
I am waiting for the 4.5-inch HTC Holiday.

In the case of our unit, don't you actually have to market the damn thing if you want Android to meet your expectations?
Dell has yet to market ANY of it's mobile devices,
strangely though the venue pro is doing a lot better then the venue, even though the venue pro had a really hard start in life.
It might be the largest userbase behind the s5, though granted the wp7 market has a lot less devices overall so it's not as diffucult to not be flooded by millions of devices unlike on android
I gave up waiting for 2.2, I gave up completely for 2.3, I gave up on the update to the streak, I'm GIVING UP on Dell. Samsung note will be my next device when it hits the states.
I think Dell was trying to sell its mobile phones using the same sales model they used when selling PCs. They didn't take into account the many, many more variables that affect mobile phone purchases (carrier first, then platform, then leading edge hardware). They, I think, wrongly assumed, "People are buying alot of Android phones, and since we're Dell, if we make them, people will buy them". Let Dell go back to Microsoft.... I mean they've been in bed together for decades..... Mr. Dell just is reluctant to admit fault.... "We're Dell..... no one is buying our phones so it MUST be Android's fault" LOL

It would help if they actually followed the development cycle and released the updates, where is 2.3.3, 2.3.4 and so on?
A device stuck with a older version of the OS is always going to be less popular.

Yeah, thats exactly it
There is this saying don't hate the player, hate the game. I think. But in this case , its the other way around Yeah, people that cant admit there made a mistake, not updating the software, or at least doing some market hype.
It seems like Dell isn't very appealing because of the style, and its openness to software. Plus , back then Android wasn't that popular that you can could sell a heavy 5" phone, But now days with the right specs, you just watch ...
In short, they are too lazy, There going for the surely win route, I think. Thats why they are going for the Win8 tablet.
Dell must have new PR manager
if dell stepped up the hardware, maybe some IPS, super AMOLED+, 8+MP cam anyone? make Streak 7 a bit thinner.. release with stock Android and get updates out on time, and maybe unlock bootloaders, etc. oh yeah and advertise!! They could be moving units.. Streak 7 likely last piece of anything Dell I own for a good long time..
One thing I will say, however, is my cousin has the Dell WindowsPhone "Venue Pro".... and that phone is truly a THING OF BEAUTY (no kiddin). I've read on more than one reputable site that it may in fact be "the best WindowsPhone available" (believe it or not). Not only is it extremely well-made, but it feels like you could drive nails with it and not hurt it. Such a shame it's running that G-damned lame-as-**** Windows OS.

Personally I will never buy another windows phone. Was very glad of the android transition to revert, even if windows "finally" did something about their quirky, sticky, freezing between processing and my alltime fav "random non-response touchscreen moments".
But Dell F'd up once with bad promo and had monkies doing their PR. Dell f'd a secomd time making the announcement about. "Dell has pulled the streak from its current inventory ...stay tuned for a special announcement.." Leaving us to believe our trusty ole Streaks were called in for some "innerds overhaul" only to hear that its been pulled from the U.S. market.
Dell f'd a third time releasing a DELL STREAK PRO, much smaller screen and device, looks like a cookie-cut replicate of most other phones, lost all its streak5 features.
I am looking for info on how to get my hands on the ViewSonic tab/phone.
Time to put ole Dell out to third-world pastures
Personally my opinion is not one to count on Dell's conscious but here it goes, first of all they didn't even make the product they just slapped their name on it and try to get as many sales as they could two once their product crashed on 2.2 faster than an angry bird into a wall they knew if they didn't pull it they would get a bad name and three dell doesn't care about their customer cause if they did they would admit to making a bad product and see how they can go ahead and fix their problem extend warranties on bad units, fix 2.2 issues an apology for stealing your money oh wait it's not stealing it's business. Okay well from now on Samsung has my business and I will steal from Dell by letting one know everytime they see my Streak "what the hack is that thing" saying the worst investment you can ever make"
@Chamo4u2: Dell's conscience and the fact they only put their name on the Streak aside, I'd like to find out where you get this impression they pulled the Streak because of crashes. Now I've owned a Streak since April. It came with 2.2.2 347 preinstalled. In that time frame I've upgraded the ROM to 351 and 360, after having to reinstall 347 twice due to mistakes I made in tweaking the ROM for my tastes. At no time have I encountered force close issues, thus I don't believe their ROMs are the problem. Since my experience flatly contradicts yours, what is different about your Streak compared to mine?
The Streak was discontinued in the original countries where it was released. Dell has released the Streak in Asian countries this year, meaning for those countries the Streak is new. If the Streak were pulled because of software problems, Dell would not have released it in Asia. Thus your statement that the Streak was pulled due to crashes is demonstrably false.
The Streak is actually a decent device that was saddled with poor marketing decisions made by Dell. Of course this assumes that the Streak was actually marketed, when we know it wasn't. Had Dell put any effort into promoting the Streak in television commercials, had put Streaks in AT&T stores, and had actually sold the device with 2.1 from the start instead of 1.6 we likely would not be having this discussion.
Despite the lack of marketing and despite Michael Dell's comments, apparently Dell does still care about the consumers. As most people reading this forum know, Dell released the sources to a Gingerbread kernel. According to DJ Steve those sources have been in his possession for over a week now. With Dell releasing the kernel, can official Gingerbread ROMs be far behind?
P.S. You've got to work a bit on the punctuation buddy. I almost ignored your post because I had so much difficulty reading it.

I'm with Strephon...... I've had my factory-installed Froyo Streak since last April and it's been one of the most stable Android phones I've ever owned (seriously).... And I've owned EVERY T-Mobile Android phone available (MyTouch Slide, MyTouch 4G, Nexus, G2, LG G2x). I blame the US Streak's downfall on non-existent marketing and offering it carrier-subsidized only on aTnT. Up until they lost iCrap exclusivity, they would actually try and talk new customers out of buying anything Android (I witnessed this myself).....

I experienced that firsthand, and got so pissed I left the store. If there is one thing I cannot stand it's being lied to, and the AT&T "salesperson" did exactly that in trying to dissuade me from going with Android.
Pledging support for Microsoft and Windows 8,
That's the key phrase there, it means they've done a deal with M$ and knocking Android is a way of passing the buck for their past failure on to Google.

It would be nice to think that taking that into consideration that DELL would maybe continue development on the Streak...
Or maybe even go as far as to actually continue work on that dual core Opus One that we all have yearned for.

Comparison of the two:
Galaxy Note xxxxxx Dell Streak
5.78 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 6.02
3.27 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 3.11
0.38 xxxxxxxxxxxxx 0.40
Metric:
146.85 xxxxxxxxxxx 153

Other than the Galaxy Note being 0.16" or 3.95mm wider it is smaller overall, but packs a bigger screen.

I can say this.. Dell has a play in the DoD for sure... Trust me..
With regards to the OP:
Engadget demoed the venue having the same software loaded a couple weeks back, as the S5 and venue are really similar it's prob the same software set.
I guess it makes sense that they want to look for a US based company for this since it simpilifies policy vs using a foreign company's products (assuming they use it at all)
There arnt many US based device manus afterall, moto and dell are pretty much the only game in town. The Streak isnt particularly secure though, it's bootloader is unencrypted/not-locked.
Though still this doesnt make that much sense: the S5/7/venue are manufactured and maintained by qisda, which is a taiwanese company. I cant say for sure which does what exactly software wise but qisda does most of the rom, but I doubt that dell does it by themselves 100% stateside.
I dont know how moto does it but dell isnt 100% usa designed, though dell austin was the lead at least in the initial design ( i think)

Reaffirms the fact that Dell missed a golden opportunity with the Dell Streak and Venue lines. Things like this happen when you're a large corporation incapable of quickly adapting to a changing environment.
How does this affect our phones in particular?

They've already had plans to exit the smartphone/tablet sector over a year ago.
(WinRT tabs likely are handled by their windows division)
Look at their roadmaps and what they delivered: there hasnt been a single thing out from them since the launch of the SPro.
Not even android updates, which means that the S10 is stuck on HC and the SPro is stuck on GB while they're both only about a year old each.

Dell is the wrong target. They probably don't have any sources at all. It doesn't matter if Dell stopps their android-future, they are basically resellers. The company qisda (former benq) is still manufactoring the next generation of these devices and sell them on asian markets (example: Sky IM-T100K Vega NO.5) . They won't give us hardware specific sources on the austin-plattform, as long are descendants out there which could - for example - be unlocked with the full knowleage about the Streak.
Its better that they drop the Business, their devices are quite bad. I had a streak 7 and it was
a pain in the a$$. But they should release the data, so good developers could make a usable rom
Well, I have a number of other android devices, and even if less powerful, my DS5 still for some reason is my favourite. The screen is gorgeous and battery life is more than OK. For as long as we continue to get updates from our beloved developers, my Streaks are here to stay. I would say more: every time someone sells their device and pushes the second hand prices down a little bit, I get happier: eventually I will be retro-upgrading my entire family and friends to great DS5s!

Nice article, we were trendsetters and (I) knew that back then, only Dell didn't knew what they had and kept calling it a mini tablet
I'm not into conspiracy, but:
Note was released right after Streak EOL'ed.
Streak had good sales in at least GB (afaik).
Dell didn't market the device right.
As for Note it was a real marketing spree even here, in Ukraine.
Maybe a corporate deal?
We have Gingerbread due to Olleh stock leftovers. And two Indian coders.
Dell is not really opensource and that's not good.
Judging from tech responces i had for my requests - tech sup fully located in India and i didn't get an answer - only kernel source folder was renamed
Next, PC/desktop end even server market is dying now due to cloud computing and changes to the way the people work with data now.
Our company itself moved about 1000 accounts to Google, effectively minimizing support costs.
Dell still has a chance, but hooking with Windows 8 RT is not wise - as Windows is mostly used for obsolete/legacy/outdated accounting software (at least here) and RT is just not compatible with x86 code. And Microsoft cares only for their only profit. Nokia (i think most possibly prolific MS partner, and it's brand still valuable here) tries to remarket already available solutions from other cloud vendors by giving them fancy names. It's fun
Dell will follow HP if they won't get to the train.
And i don't really know why did i write all this
Dell hoisted themselves on their own petard by ditching Android in favor of Windows RT. It's like I said when this post first appeared.
"Things like this happen when you're a large corporation incapable of quickly adapting to a changing environment."
Dell banking on Windows 8 RT to prop up its business is proof that they are not adapting quickly enough. Tablets with Windows 8 RT or even full-blown Windows 8 simply are not selling well, no matter how much Microsoft candy-coats the numbers. Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets are too heavy and too power hungry for the average consumer to want to use for an extended period of time.
Dell are slowly coming to grips with the fact that customer computing habits have changed, but the changes they are making are incremental, and only designed to retain their existing business. They had an opportunity to be at the forefront of the new wave of computing by offering a device in a convenient form factor. Now they're simply irrelevant.
