Your ROM and battery life (NS4G ONLY!) - Nexus S General

Ok I'm having trouble finding a good combination of rom and kernel to get great battery life. I'm curious as to what you guys are running and what kind of battery life your getting.
Cm7 nighlies is only getting me 12-15 hours Max. I can kill the battery in about 2 to 3 hours with constant use. I use to get 30-35 on my epic and atleast 5 hours with constant use. This is supposed to be AOSP and bloat free. WHY I NO HAZ GOOD BATTERIES???
lol
thanks in advance doods

Are you using a custom kernel? Is it undervolted? Are you using a battery-friendly governor?
Use darker background/themes. White/light colors mean LED's are at full power = more battery consumption.
Is your desktop littered with widgets?
Use Wifi when available.
Reduce your screen brightness.
Social media/weather/news/etc. applications set to frequently update?
Just a few things off the top of my head. I can normally go a solid day without too many issues. Sometimes at the end of the day to drain my battery down to 15%, I'll crank my brightness up and watch videos or play a game. You should try out Deck or the Oxygen ROM, which are similar to CM7 but are a little more "barebone" and seem to get better battery life.

Lol no man. Well here's what I normally run
No overclock
No undervolt because I've been running stock kernels
Backround data off
4g/3g on
Screen brightness low
Regular background
4 pages with less than 10 Widgets
Titanium back freezing unneeded apps
Same way I used to run things on my epic and I would get a sweet 30+ hours. The only difference being that I can't shut off 3g and keep 4g like with my epic. I've been trying to run roms with stock kernel because I feel they all sooner or later cause some instability in my experience.
So this is the purpose of my thread. See who gets great battery life and mimic their set up
sent from my Touchwiz'd Nexus S 4g

I honestly don't think you'll notice much difference in battery life unless you flash an undervolted kernel and/or a lean AOSP ROM. You should check out the GPA17 or GPA18 ROM by Buglesspete. It's VERY similar to stock and is reported to get excellent battery life.

if you have titanium backup freezing apps why not just uninstall them, does the freeze actually freeze the app or does it kill when it tried to open up?
You can turn 3g and 4g off it under in the settings though uncheck mobile networks and we all know how to turn off 4g just no usefull widgets

"Freezing" an app in titanium backup is basically like uninstalling it from the operating system's point of view. However, from the app's point of view it never knew it was "uninstalled." So when you thaw it, the app retains all data and information.

The best combo I've found (so far) for battery life is Pete's GPA18 and the matr1x UV kernel. I run mine at 800mhz with the LAZY governor and the system is plenty responsive, yet still easy on the battery.

Better battery life!

Hey guys & gals just wanted 2 share something with u. I recently decided 2 uninstall cetcpu from my phone & decided 2 go with cpu tuner instead. In doing so i've noticed my battery life improve significantly with some profile tweaking of course. If you've run the virtuous htc sence rom with the pershoot o.c kernal u know how disgusting the battery life can b.It literally sucks the juice out of your battery like "Debbie" from Debbie does Dallas sucks the juice out of...well u know. Anyway,i also noticed how little juice the system resources now use up. I included a screenshot of the battery status screen.Hope this helps anyone with battery issues especially if your running the rom & kernal mentioned above, it worked 4 maybe it can work 4 u. P.S I have the screen set to 20% brightness, gps, wifi, blutooth, autosync all disabled.Only reason i mention this is because even with all these things disabled along with a few other,b4 installing cpu tuner my battery would still drain like crazy. Thx.
That's some horrible grammar.

Liek ma grammarz?
Anyway, Your saying the cpu tuner helps the battery life? I'll give this a go but I don't use any of the sense roms. I'm all for better battery life although I do get 15h on pershoots kernel running cm 6.1 stable.

i have almost the exact same info on mine with setcpu oc to 1ghz on CM6.1 and i get atleast a full day of use with frequent music and texts. alot better then any other android phone.
I don't know how you guys are having such bad battery life. Currently at the moment I am at 22h 11m 51s since unplugged with 57% left. This is all with CM6.1 RC4 w/ wifi + wifi calling on all the time when I am home, autosync on for everything, auto brightness, and some use of gps. I listen to music on my phone for atleast 3+ hours walking to and from class + texting, browsing, facebook, twitter, fantasy league during class and the occasional call, pretty good usage. with setcpu on oc to 1ghz with some profiles set up.
what if im not running sense?
If it works with sense I would think it'd work with most everything else.

Is the phone not quick enough at 1Ghz? I keep mines on stock speeds, have setcpu installed but don't use, and have CyanogensMod on it. I get the whole days worth plus more of battery. I can't even kill it when I want to recalibrate it.
A whole day for me is about 16-20 hours for me without charging. This is MADNESS!

Not that the phone is not fast enough. It's placebo effect where people "feel" that it needs to be faster when they overclock it at crazy speed. The G2 has already proved itself a speed monster, none of the android phones out there can top it right now. As for the battery life, I honestly don't notice any considerable improvement.

So what settings exactly are you using on the cpu tuner? Just wanted to know so I can replicate it.
My settings.
@quierotacobell...Under "Current" i have governor set to:conservative,Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
"Profiles":
Performancendemand-Max:1097Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Good:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Normal:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz
Power save:conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Screen off:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz
Extreme Power save:conservative-Max:768Mhz,Min:768Mhz(services set to 2g)
Keep in mind i have wifi, blutooth, & sync disabled all across the board. Also i'm simply stating what worked for me it's no guarantee it's going to work for you.
Hmm how can you get better battery life with CPU Tuner because the lowest you can go to minimum is 768?
Will try that out Utorrent, thanks.

What is your sleep percentage after 5 minutes.

This purpose of this thread is so we can get into a discussion on how we can all improve our battery life. Please state the following.
On cpuspy do the following: reset timers, turn off the screen and then wait 5 minutes and turn on your screen and press refresh to get your results.
1. What Rom you are using? Me-Cyanogenmod 7 Nightly 10
2. With cpuspy what percentage of the time your phone is in sleep mode after 5 minutes of none usage. Me-94% of the time.
3. Tip and tricks on how you produced your results.
Me:
1. Killed 3g data.
2. I have no background data apps running.
3. Uninstalled google talk.
4. Froze unnecessary application in the background such as:
CMstats 1.0
google+
news and weather
Applications with auto updating I either manual pull my updates such as Facebook, have it refresh every hour my email with Maildroid. Friendster updates once a day, beautiful widget updates 2 times a day, etc.... in short find any application you suspect pulls data in intervals and make the intervals and update as little as possible or not at all. I hope this helps somebody out.
Data pulling is the biggest cause of battery drainage next to screen usage. Let's all try to improve our battery life.

Another issue that causes increased battery drainage is, low signal, or weak signal strength, because the phone is always looking for the closest tower. How to modify that is the question.

Well you could use a program like Rom control or flash a different PRL. This will get you a better signal which will increase your battery life. There are thread showing how you can manually change your PRL.

97% deep sleep in 5:07 mins. running miui rc 0.5 w/ shadow kernel 0.6+. used autostarts and rom toolbox to prevent just about everything from autostarting. 3g/wifi off. bluetooth on. cfq conservative in voltage control. 4 widgets on homescreen (news & weather, pure news, miui clock widget, minimalistic text widget). froze or uninstalled every app mentioned above that others freeze. uninstalled gtalk. have voodoo control, bluetooth, swype, swipepad, miui launcher, min text, and betterbatterystats running in background, as well as battery monitoring enabled in miui settings. the key to good battery i believe is autostarts/rom toolbox (including some sysctl tweaks thru rom toolbox, too) and undervolting (i undervolt -100 at each step)
im guessing the 2 seconds on 1000mhz is from turning the screen on

CyanogenMod 7 with tiamat kernel gets pretty good battery life. The kernels tend to have mor eaffect on battery life then the roms themselves.

Sounds like she might have 4g running all the time. Or maybe she might be updating/refreshing her background data to often. Only use 4g to down load big files or steaming vedio. Check her 4g connection and turn off or her sync rate set it to every 3 hours or more. If one or both are the culprit then she'll see a big improvement.
I run EVO Deck rom with cyanogenmod love it. And every thing works.
Hope this helps
I figured I'd chime in because you said you wanted a fully functioning ROM. CM7 and Deck had always yielded the best battery life for me with the last rev of the Savage Zen Kernel, but if you're like me and are very anal about the phrase "fully functioning" then it should be noted that the AOSP ROMs don't have 720p video recording. If that doesn't bother you than CM7 or Deck all the way.
That said i'm running TommyTomato's Classic ROM with the Freedom Agressive kernel and I'm getting 25+ hours on a charge which puts it on par with any AOSP ROM/kernel combo I've run. Might be able to get a little better on AOSP, but I'd say that's pretty damn good and it's fully functioning as in EVERYTHING works 100%.

I'm on Tommys Classic Supermagic, running the Hard to kill battery calibration script from Zepplins thread and i'm getting the best battery life i've had on any other rom and i've used this script with about 10 different roms, from AOSP to Sense 3.0,wont run 3.5 because of bugs and no 4G,after a full charge with alot of phone calls, texts and surfing,i held a charge for 4 days,it was 67% on the second day and actually died on the forth AM.
I'd definitely do a comparison between screen-on and awake time.
If you don't know this, you can access it through Settings > About Phone > Battery Use/History/Etc. See if the bar graphs of screen-on match awake. If you see a long bar under awake, but not a matching one under screen-on, you probably have a process or app that is stuck and needs to be removed/re-installed or have it's data cleared.
Note: it's normal to have some awake time that doesn't match screen on as apps/processes still have to perform there activities even with the screen-off, however, it shouldn't be a ton.
The best app out there to study this IMO is betterbatterstats. Hope this helps! Cheers!

Best setup for battery life in MIUI V4?

I'm currently running 2.4.6 along with nyan colonel 4 but so far I'm not too pleased; I'm getting about 5-6 hours with medium use on a 1800 mAh battery.
Try turning off 3G (mobile data) when not in use. I was getting 6-7hrs w/ it on & now I can squeeze out 12-15hrs. However I left it alone it went 30 some odd hrs w/ only 30mins of screen time though.

Nuh uh, that's not gonna fly in this thread. I shouldn't have to be turning off my data to get any semblance of decent battery life. I really do want to get this to work though; I love MIUI. Unfortunately it seems the GB version will never be complete as everyone jumped ship to ICS and the ICS version is awesome but seems to get crap battery life even on 4.0.4
you dont HAVE to turn your data off....but if you wanna save some battery that is one of the best ways. if your phone is in your pocket and you dont need it, why have it on suckin juice....try juice defender, i use it with any rom i run and it helps...play with uv in nstools, just dont go too crazy with it.

Uh lol? He just gave you the best tip and you turned it down, you must not be interested in improving battery life, if you're constantly using data and have over 2hrs of screen time you're asking for crappy battery life, and unless you are always receiving important emails, you really don't have a reason to run it 24/7, if you're to lazy to turn it on and off, just use juicedefender, and it'll do it for you. You'll have to make some sort of sacrifice, whether it be monetary or personal. Phone usage is everything, get a bigger battery. Also, logging out of social networking apps when you aren't using them helps as well. I find I have very nice battery life on MIUIgb

I know that turning off data can save me battery life. That's not the point of this thread. I figured it was implied I was talking about different kernels and versions of MIUI V4, not the way I use my phone.
On that note, what's your setup with MIUI GB? I've been considering going back but I'm turned off by MMS STILL being broken
Sorry dude but that's the wrong question to ask. By now u should know that every phone is different if its what kernel to use & what setting to use this or that app than its simple trial and error. When we were still on froyo I couldn't use one of the very popular kernels bcuz it drained by better like crazy it took me a few weeks but I found the perfect setup to get good battery life. & sorry for misunderstanding your intention for this thread.

Alright.. well I misunderstood, it mighta been better to include that in op but it's whatever now lol, I'm using shadowkernel MIUI, and... 100-800Mhz governorndemand, schedular: Sio. And yes MMS has actually been a pain in the ass today for me, I'm considering going to AOKP again lol. I will apologize if I sounded rude in the previous post though, I didn't understand where you were coming from.

Is dropping down to 800 MHz noticeable as far as performance goes? Also is MMS the only problem you have with MIUI GB?

[ICS] We need your help... Battery life...

Since the beginning of Android one thing has always been an issue with some of the greatest ROMs.
........................Battery life.
Every day lives are drained away by the pleasures and features of such fantastic ROMs... and such things at time seem so hard to bare that we try to change the lives of our battery by going to a different ROM.
So now you have a chance to make a difference, nay, an opportunity to change the lives of many...
This thread is strictly for how to save Battery life. CM9/AOKP have amazing battery life by themselves (but yet can always be made better) But for those on MIUI (Not so great battery life) this will be really useful.
Understand that everyone's device is different and although you may get 15 hours off MIUI/AOKP/CM9 others may only get 4 from them.
Post what it is that helps you achieve maximum Battery life. You may be the one to solve the cure to wowhowdidmybatterylifedroptwentypercentinanhourosis.
Be sure to include:
1. ROM
2. Kernel
3. Tweaks that have been applied through ClockworkMod
4. Apps used to save life
5. What battery you use
6. How long your life lasts
7. Anything else that you think may help

Shoot me......
But seriously, disabling 3g on ICS saves a ton of battery life.

Uhhh,,,on ANY ROM...but not a practical solution.
I think the OP is looking for more practical solutions where they are not disabling major features of the smartphone.

1. CM9, although i think aokp does better.
2. Samurai Kernel, although just about any other ICS kernel should help. The biggest thing that you can change between kernels is the Governor and I/O depending on these two will determine how the CPU runs and in effect will determine battery life. Conservative is just about the best for battery life. If you need slickness and not too worried about battery Ondemand. If you want the best of both worlds i Think Wheatly is a good compromise. Also I/O , Sio is "simple" but VR is flash based so it tends to be the best. Otherwise Noop/Deadline. Also voltage.. undervolting will help limit the amount of well voltage to the CPU. So the lower you can get it the better.
3. Dont have tweaks i apply through CWM but i Run the V6 Supercharger, 3G turbocharger(optional), and the Kick Ass Kernelizer from Zeppelin.
4. I cannot stress this enough, Apps that say they save battery... run... which uses RAM and Resources... meaning its running trying to save you battery, Using battery. Which is stupid... and useless.
5. I have two a 3500Mah and the stock 1.5 year old 1500mah.
6. Typically with 3 hours of display over a period of 15hours (1500 mah) and around 5 hours of display over a period of 22 hours (3500 mah). However this is on wifi, 3g would deduct these a pretty good amount if you have sucky speeds.
He needs to get over it... lol. The only thing that truly saves battery life is managing your connections. There is no magic bullet unfortunately.
PLEASE! Don't tell us to turn off data and never sync the phone. Obviously if you don't use the phone the battery will last forever. I need a phone that can do the following:
Receive emails and texts as they are sent. (I use exchange push)
Last 18 hours on a standard or 1800 mAh battery.
I can just barely make that with stock FC09, I'd love to run ICS but with either CM9 or AOKP I barely make 10 hours.

Why must people post unhelpful comments such as the one above? I don't understand the logic there...
anyways since this was aimed at miui I get pretty good battery life with it... (3.5 hours screen on time) nyan v5 ftw! No special features... uv a lot (won't list my settings cuz every phone is different) and no oc... used to use jd but, it saves more battery if you just switch things off manually... really though until I flashed nyan my battery life was atrocious, but now just about on par with the peoples rom (4.5 to 5 hours screen on time!) Oh yeah, all this with the stock battery...

On aokp with 1800 mAh i can do about 3Hours of screen on time and 15 Hours of battery life and my phone was awake 75% of the time.
Screenie was at 15%
This was stock Everything Except ROM haha

Think about if your screen was on while the device was awake..your time would be cut in half

Oh my good golly gosh.
I just realized the best battery life I ever got was on DK28.
So take that. Let's go Frankenstein.
1. CM9 KANG June 02 build.
2. Stock
3. Services for V6 and Search Key Remap
4. Ha!
5. Stock. Came with device...need new one.
6. Depends on use. But I usually get the estimated six hours consistently.
7. If you're going to use a task killer just use the built in one. Overclocking is bad, and in my experience so is undervolting. GTalk, official Facebook application(especially this. Even with notifications off it still is always going), G+, and more are always running and are a drain. No live wallpapers, and no widgets that require constant updating. As much black as possible. Don't use third-party batteries. Obviously turning off 3G, 4G, sync, and such will dramatically increase your battery life.
WAIT! Why am I writing this? There is a freaking optimization guide. Why does this exist? For ****s sake.
Running AOKP build 36, stock, FC09 modem 15 hours running takes me down to 50% batt hour of screen time, constant crappy wifi connection in an area with crappy cell signal sync for everything but email and g chat is every 2 hours (weather and all that). Big thing to save batt for me was turning down my screen brightness. I was also getting crappy battery life till i let this rom install run the battery down to 5% twice.

By no means was I saying never enable your 3g/4g.. but the fact remains that the single best way to conserve your battery life is to be smart about managing your connections. I.e. not leaving it on ALL day and to only turn sync on when your actually checking your e-mail.. be that through an app like juice defender or manually toggling. If that's not more helpful than what you posted (UV a lot and don't overclock??? Duh.) than my bad bro!

Something we can all get behind here... I remember I used to get 24+ hours on froyo w/o customs kernels. Le sigh..

-I don't use the supercharger, but I do apply the same oom ram mods. These help close unused apps when they exceed the applied limit. Based on my experience, it's kept apps under control.

-THIS +9000! An app that spends all of it's time stopping other apps is wasting just as much "battery." I maintain, Advanced Task Killer, with NO, I repeat NO AUTOKILL. Set a widget on your home page, tap it occasionally to make sure everything is closed. Same effect as the built in task manager, but one single convenient tap.

-These numbers are pretty much the same for me. I almost always average 3 hours display on the stock battery between games and internet. 5-6 hours on the 3500, but I'm pretty sure it's not reaaallly the 3500mah it claims to be... . I NEVER turn off wifi or 3G, but google autosync is off until I edit my contacts.

I don't turn off my connections at all and get great battery life... and seens how the op states don't say anything about disabling 3g or anything id say your comment was the least helpful on the thread... but at least you tried... don't get into a battle of witts with me, I'm afraid your unarmed...

Firstly, I'm not trying to get into a pissing match with you. Its pointless. Secondly, the op makes no mention whatsoever of connection status. Thirdly, while you might get decent battery life w/o doing it.. I guarantee you'd do better if you did. Straight facts.

1. CM9
2.ShadowKernel (I find nyan colonel to be a little more draining) SIO, conservative
3. None
4.System Tuner Pro configured to UV, under clock to 400mhz on screen off, to close apps that don't automatically restart themselves, configure "auto-kill" so its not as aggressive with killing apps that just stay on, and a few sysctrl edits that I honestly don't think make a difference.
5.stock epic 1500 mAh, my sprint store wouldn't give me an sgsII battery
6. 12-18 hrs depending on use, though it has definitely drained quicker
7.be easy on data! (There kennyG) turn off wifi when your not near your networks, turn off mobile data, Bluetooth, and autosync when your not needing it. (Unless you absolutely need PUSH email for your job or whatever though honestly as far as my job goes if its important enough for me to need the message immediately they will simply dial my phone number. Yeah I'm old fashioned.
- Cm9
- Shadow kernel
- No tweaks
-1800 D710 battery
- I get 15-20 hours depending on how much music I stream during the day.
- I got the biggest boost by using the profiles in CM9 to optimize my connections and syncing depending on where I'm at during the day. I have Wifi at work and home, so I have it toggle my data off during that time period and vice versa when I'm mobile.

Using AOKP with shadow kernel.
Best thing I did to help with battery life was to turn off all notification options in the FB app. And I set haxsync to download photos only when plugged in.
