Hi HTC HD2 freaks,
Last week I tested Mango on my HTC HD2 (EU).
After some work I succeeded with the installation
of Rom XBmod Yuki v.2 and updated with the original version
Updated with Zune. Please do not ask me how I did it because it was
a lot of work because I did not keep track of all I did during the installation.
I only want to tell you about my experience with Mango on my HTC HD2
First of all Mango is fast both not so fast as Android on my HTC (TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v3.6.8) It looks nice and this OS is easy to work with the app`s from the market place where nice both there where many app`s I did not find yet.
Activation code:
Everythings works and I activated with an original HTC HD7 code that I got trough the Windows Servise Center in Germany, I am Dutch and I speak German. Well so I convinced the lady from Microsoft that I lost my Activation keys and if she make me a new activation code. The ask for your name and telephone number so a gave the a German name and telephone number I found on Google. She did not find the name so I said something most have gone wrong in the fist activation. So she made a new code for me and It work great.
So after a few days of exploring I changed back to TyphooN CyanogenMod 7
v3.6.8 because I mis the open source possibilities and the much more extended OS.
Mango Review:
Fast with nice Live Tiles no nice Themes.
Nice interface both not very adjustable not open source.
No nice widgets, no adding pages.
I did not like the Explorer 9 it is my opinion not very mobile friendly it duos not adjust the pages text like in Android. So no good and for me the most disappointing!!!
Not much text pasting possibilities.
Not so much sharing possibilities as in Android.
Conclusion:
Android will not loose many users to Windows Mobile and when the do many will com back after the experienced the OS.
Nokia will still going to cell less Smart phones because of Windows.
Android will go on winning more users and Apple will stay second.
Windows Mango we will see. It is a nice OS for non Android users!

OK, this is only your opinion.
I don't share this opinion.
I hate this public opinions on mobile OS.
Do you know why ?
Well it's up to user which OS looks to him the best mobile OS.
Everyone should work with the OS that can be the most efficient for his work.
Nobody can say WP7,Android, Meego,Symbian, OS X, are
bad OS. They have simmilar functions but in different UI and that's tha point.
Not everyone likes the same UI.
Thats my opinion and stop saying the your public opinion because nobody care. This is my advice.
There are always people that have to react because they feel affendid.
Sorry for all ho are!

Good for you mate, be happy with whatever you like most
I'm so glad I've chosen the HD2 over anything else 2 years ago because I could compare everything WM6.5 with everything Android for all this time.
This way I was able to find what's best for me... and that is Windows Phone
I think you can find some shiny glass icons if you look hard enough

It's because the way you write your piece, that might offend people.
You write it as your opinion has to count for everybody
You think Android is better for your HD2, which is fine. I am running official Mango now for 3 days and to be honest, I'm sticking with it.
If everybody would start a thread saying what OS they think is better, XDA would be a huge mess.
You stick with Android, if that works for you. No biggie
I tried various OS versions and builds thanks to my HD2 and I am forever grateful to the developers who gave us all an opportunity to do so on one device.
Up until Mango I was sticking with my Android Gingerbread build and the times I flashed Nodo and other WP7 variant I didn't last long and returned to Android because I missed the interface, the applications - all the lovely things that make Android such a fun OS to use.
When full, properly working Mango came along, the OS choice became much tougher, because I was quite taken by it. So here I am with the best of both worlds - Mango off Nand and Gingerbread off SD. During the day I switch back and forth many times, each OS has its advantages and I am glad I don't have to decide on just one.
I love my HD2!!!! Before I got it, I told everyone that it is a phone of my dreams. It didn't let me down.

I strongly disagree... Have dual boot WP7 + CM7 2.3.5 and all that I can say that Android behaves much better on HD2 than WP7. Android is much adjustable and flexible than WP7 which reminds me of an Apple (iPhone) limitations. Will wait for a stable version of Mango and will give it a shot then will write a comment about it

There will be NEVER an official upgrade path for us HD2 users to any WP7 updates ,but keep reading though all the sticky articles in this forum and you will learn how to flash unofficial WP7 rom.

I have confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is being released on several devices on November 8th. The tmobile version has two devices, the one that interests me is the HTC HD7 (and dell venue pro). Nice looking phone 4.3 inch screen, but major difference is it has three buttons (touch like the HD).

does anyone know how they plan to give the hd2 owners the OS? and what about the people who dont know anything about flashing?
WHo has reliable information on how they plan to do this.

Thank you for the bad/good news!!!
I actually just signed up to get a HD7 as soon as it's released. I keep seeing that there are too many driver/hardware compatibility issues to make wp7 work on the hd2...
A little f'd up because HTC hinted that anyone who bought the HD2 would be able to upgrade when wp7 came out...it's a good thing that we have great chef's otherwise the HD2 would be a waste

android on htc hd7 same as htc hd2??
now that this phone is coming out will it be the same process to run android on this new phone hd7, or is it more complicated then the htc hd2. are these the same phone basically spec wise except for touch buttons and a kickstand. lets strat the comparison, as i just ordered a hd2 to put android on it but not sure if the hd7 will run android better.
hd7 is not out yet how do we know if you can even run android on windows phone 7! we will all have to wait and see!
Hopefully our great devs here will be able to port wp7 over. Cotulla already got it to boot up on the hd2, which is a great sign. Considering the hd7 has the exact same hardware as our hd2, wp7 has the possibility to run great on our phones. We can only hope and support our devs. Time will tell.

You should get a native android phone if you just want to run android. Android on the hd2 will probably never run as well as native android phone... its always gonna be a hacked on version of android.

I'd be a little skeptical about trying the same process on the HD7, will an uploader work or will it brick the phone. we know what happened with the the hd2 hspl was neccessary. And, if the drivers are so different that the wm7 is incompatible with the hd2's hardware...i would assume just throwing the android we have now onto a diffent device is asking for trouble (althoug from everything I'm seeing, the hd7 is almost the same thing... i dont like the fact that the 16gb of memory is on board...will it have an sd slot?)
I'd wait until someone successfully does it
LANCELOT
When I looked at the spec it look like it the same processor as my HD2 except for the button. So it can be program to use Windows Mobile 7 without programming the other buttong? Just curious. Can someone check it out? Thanks.
Oh you dear, sweet, uninitiated. Allow me to clarify some points:
1-WILL THE HD2 GET AN UPGRADE TO WP7
A-Officially, no. This was announced some months ago that the HD2 will NOT be getting an upgrade to WP7 from MS or HTC.
2-DOES THAT MEAN THAT A CUSTOM WP7 ROM WILL HAPPEN?
A-Maybe. As it has been stated, Cotulla has booted WP7 successfully on HD2 hardware, but it is uncertain as to wether it will work in day to day use. His team is currently VERY secretive about what is/isn't working.
3-WHAT ABOUT ANDROID?
A-I have always said, if you wan't Android, buy and Android device. WP7 will almost certainly NOT work with current Android builds. Different hardware, different drivers etc. Oh and WP7 is not compatable with CE applications...which means HaRET...and pretty much any program written for WinMo.
I hope that clears some things up!

I don't like WP7, frankly
No positive responses from microsoft
Even though porting of WP7 has been successful on device such as HD2, however, Microsoft seems not planning to help the developers and hackers in realizing the dream of running WP7, so most likely even if the porting is successful, most or some features and applications are NOT likely to work.

You should do some research... the port was successful and it runs practically the same as it runs on a HD7, except that the multitouch is buggy, we only have 2 point touch rather than the 4point touch native phones have, and the stock camera app doesn't autofocus because we don't have a dedicated camera button that can be pressed halfway down to initialize autofocus. But we already have a good camera app made that use autofocus and takes full advantage of the camera. We even have 720p video recording now on the HD2 with wp7, something we don't have with any other OS on the HD2.
And I would keep my HD2 over any other native WP7 phone even with those small issues... because unlike any WP7 phone, we can also run android off SD card, which also runs without hardly any issues and runs almost as good as a native phone. That more than makes up for any small issues that these ports have. The HD2 is like an EVO and a HD7 combined into one device... nothing out now can beat that!
Also, this thread is like 4 months old. There was no need to revive it.
Wow, way to necro a WP7 port thread from back in October, guys.
The year is 2011 AD...
Really, MS is missing the boat here... there are thousands of HD2's out there; and Microsoft neeeeds all the phones they can claim to be running their new WP7 platform so developers will be attracted to create apps for their sadly lacking app store. They should willing issue authorization codes (along with the appropriate "run at your own risk / we wash our hands of it / it's ALL your fault" disclaimer) to anyone who wants to flash their HD2 to WP7; and then, happily count that code as another phone running the new WP7. $$$
personally using wp7 on hd2 i found it awesome:
number of apps? 90% of iphone and android apps are rubbish (i tried a lot of them);
on wp7 i've all i want from my phone, i don't need android or winmo6.5;
but because wp7 is still buggy on hd2 (battery and multitouch) i've finally decided to sell my hd2 for 260€, and i've bought an lg optimus 7 for 240€... i was bored to flash a rom every week, and now i don't need to wait cotulla's work for an official update...
i think that microsoft should thank to cotulla and dft (and many other) for giving the opportunity of try this OS to the HD2 community (a community of developers and tester), I think it is an excellent springboard
I have been watching the WP7 threads for a little while now and have noticed that there doesn't seen to be much activity in there.
I was wondering if WP7 isn't very popular among the community. For me, I love it. I think M$ has done pretty good with this one, and DFT have done even better, Thanks guys. Also thanks to the chefs too.
So I guess I am wondering what OS the community are using.

ANDROID 2.3.3 the BEST OS i am using it on my HD2
WP7 mainly, occasionally dip into Android on my SD, starting to think I may just use WP7 when the nodo comes out, beginning to get thoughts why do I need my hd2 when all I use is WP7.
Android is just to messy, not a single keyboard on android comes anywhere close to the Standard WP7 one, Android is becoming fragmented with now the tegra seperate apps, the seperate Expedia play ones also, this is where iPhone and WP7 will prevail. I know its difficult for this to not frament over time with new technologies but to have so many different speced Android devices available at the same time, that run different games and compatibility in my mind is a mess and I am starting to dislike where Android is heading.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.
I can't understand why WP7 isn't as popular as WinMob 6.5 according to the poll at this moment in time. I have been using it as my full time OS since getting my phone back from repair 2 weeks ago. I only get the occasional lockup (albeit for a second or too) and the odd app might not work (i.e. Messenger) but overall, I am very happy with it. Considering too, the amount of bugs that had to be ironed out when Android was ported, it's bloody marvellous.
Hello guys,
I am going to University of Waterloo, Canada, to study software engineering this fall. I currently own a xperia x10i but i have found out that it wont be able to work in Canada due to network band compatibility issues.
Hence i am gonna switch over to WIND telecom and purchase the 29CAD/mo student plan.
I basically now want to use a windows phone. Would you recommend me to get the HD7 or the HD2?
if Windows 8 ever comes out, then will it run on the HD2 or HD7? I intend to keep this phone for a minimum 3 years.
One more thing that should be kept in mind is that the normal hd2 WONT work with WIND network bands. Only the T mobile version works on WIND.
The same case is valid for the T-mobile version of HD7.
I also like customizing and flashing different ROMs etc, HD2 is undoubtedly the best HACKER friendly phone in current times, since android, ubuntu, wm7,meegoo etc have been ported to it. Will the HD7 also be like HD2 in the near future?
To summarize my requirements, i would like to use Windows mobile, preferably windows 7 (fully functioning or important things working like marketplace, browser, wifi, xbox) for a span of 3 years.
Also the device should not lag much.
Please help me choose between the HD2 and HD7.
Cheers!

If you want windows phone take an hd7. But it won‘t get all the developement the hd2 has. You also have to remember that the hd2 is already 2 years old. Developement decreases and many devs already switched to a newer phone. But if you‘re into flashing the hd2 is king.
I would take the hd7 if you want to use wp and the hd2 if you want android or an outdated winmo.

HD7 will perform WP7 better than the HD2 always.
HD2 has the "multi-touch bug" (where if you don't put both fingers at exactly the same time, multi-touch won't work).
HD7 also has better battery life.
If you really want perfect WP7, get an HD7. For me, I want Android too much to ever get a WP7-only device. I use and like Android more, but I do reboot into WP7 sometimes, and it's a good experience when I do.

You will never be able to run Windows 7 or 8 on any current phone.
If you want to use Windows Mobile, then you need to choose the HD2 or another Windows Mobile device.
If you want to use Windows Phone, then you should choose a native WP7 device to avoid the touchscreen bug and unlock lag.

Hello, my wife has a sidekick 4g that she absolutely hates and has gotten an offer to trade for an hd2. My question is, the person says it is running 2.3.5. How stable is android on the hd2? If I tell her to trade and it sucks, I will be in the doghouse! Also, if I can convince her to give windows phone 7 a shot, how does that run? I can do the searching later to find out how to boot between the two, but is it pretty risky/hard? I've rooted and rom'd every android phone I've owned but something about winmo. Makes me nervous. Thanks!

Thanks!

I agree. Just make sure the touch screen works they are infamouse for them breaking. The phone is easy to root and nearly every rom on xda runs perfect on this phone
I've had my HD2 for 2 years now, and I knew nothing about rooting etc. It took me a whole day to learn, but now I can easily switch ROMs within half an hour max.
I've tried multiple Android ROMs (SD and NAND) and a WM7 ROM before the mango update, and everything works incredibly smooth and fully-functional. It's actually even better than the original Windows Mobile OS, so I'd highly recommend giving it a fiddle! Trust me, you can't really go wrong if you follow all the right advice (stickies have all the good stuff!)
Once you get going I think you'll really love the variety of builds and find one that you're comfortable with. Enjoy!
Awesome! Thanks guys, sounds like its a go then! I may even be wanting one for myself!

Well it all depends on which rom/settings/tweaks you use but in general Android is more stable and runs better on the HD2 then most native Android devices!

You dont "root" the HD2.
I'm using CM7_Tweaked-2.0.0-LEO and radio 2.15.50.14. I would not describe it as very stable and I cannot get the radio to do 3g or H. Perhaps my expectationa are too high and I'm sure it is more stable on Android than Windows, but I am not happy with it.
I have the same problem. would like to update my Leo by Android but I do not know what is the best ROM to do that in terms of stability, display errors and energy management? I was using 2.3.5 NAND version which had quit a lot of bugs. Now I'm back on WM
Android on the hd2 in my opinion runs better on this device than some devices that are launched with it.
Load up NexusHD 2.3.7 and you or your wife won't look back.

Well you are not going to find out unless you try them. Also "2.3.5. NAND" means absolutely nothing as that isnt rom specific, that is just a version number of Android OS.
In my experience the most stable version without needing tweaks/extra setup etc is the NexusHD2 roms by tytung (Froyo) and (Gingerbread) and they are as close to stock Android as you will get.
I am addicted to trying new roms though and have started to really like the MIUI based roms but am currently testing the new NexusHD2 ICS base.
HD2 forever ...
I have an EU and a from about 2 month a TMOUS:
- EU with MIUI 2.37a stable ... hard daily use, it rocks!!!
- TMOUS to try other roms with sense (big internal space required, i hate app2sd ) and tried 3 different version of ICS for now without any problem!!!
I have thought about changing them for a real android but ... i love modding ... so no chance for other model for now
A quick reply? Buy a TMOUS
Cheers
Roms
Since you have tried many different roms, have you found a sense 3.5 that can play 720p video? Mwakious 3.5 does not
HD2 was build for Android, delivering it with WM6.5 was a joke!
