I Feel like im stuck, i have the Sprint GT. Seems there is minimal development for the Sprint GT and having an HTC EVO and using the EVO forums I'm sad.. I would gladly open my wallet as i do in the EVO forums here in the GT forums. Anybody out there feeling my same pain?
I feel your pain. I think I've only a few rooted apps working on my Sprint Tab. Not the end of the world but my Moto Droid is more fun to play with. I'm something of a hack so I don't even know if it's possible to unlock the bootloader but it would be nice to have a few other apps working like the Wireless Tether.
Sprint Tab
I understand completely. I bought a Sprint Tab and was shocked at the lack of development (came from incredible which is very similar to Evo). However, after root, CWM, voodoo, and custom kernel, I can say that I don't really desire to do anything else to my Tab. I cleaned up some bloatware myself (freeze/delete) and it runs like a dream. BTW, see this thread if you need help with anything besides root.

So don't be too disappointed, with some minor changes (VOODOO!!!) you won't need a custom rom. App performance, battery life, and general usage are all terrific now.

Thanks for the great info! I would really be happy if i could eventually have honeycomb on my GT. Im super happy with performance and size but it looks like all of the alpha and soon to be beta versions for the GT are all GSM or for Verizon. Well i said all that because my 30 trial is up in a few weeks and i dont want to be stuck with 2.2. But im gonna give Voodoo a try, just need to read up on it entirely. Thanks again!

I may need to search harder not sure i saw overcome for Sprint.
Thanks..
Honestly guys, aside from Spacemonkey's HC port, there's not much support for the VZW Tab either. All I have are a few root apps, and CWM, which is virtually useless without development. The Xoom already has custom kernels, but nobody seems to be able to get behind the GT on any level. Kinda disappointing, but I'll check out Voodoo, and maybe give that a shot.

I'm also curious where you got a sprint overcome rom.
Just wondering ...
I just got my TF, auto updated to 3.1 ... works perfectly smooth and fine ...
I'm just wondering if rooting my tablet involve has much pain in the ass has jailbreaking an iphone ... especially regarding updates ...
if you don't have a reason to root something, don't just do it because that's what the cool kids are doing.
and if you have to ask why to root, you probably don't need to.
also, this should be in general.
Probably
I don't agree with the above comment that you should only root if you know what you want it to do. Root it and explore your options. Learn something new. I believe the best reason to root is to overclock, at the moment. You also get some customization options as well (boot animation, themes, systemUI, etc...). I would recommend you root and try some different kernals and roms (I'm running Prime 1.5 and the netformer 1.5 kernal, works like a dream).
Just make sure you perform a nandroid backup before you get too crazy. Seriously, do it.
For the record, I have a jailbroken iPhone as well and the process of updating is way smoother on the transformer. Once you're familiar with the process, it probably takes 10 minutes to boot into recovery, flash the update, and reboot.
I maybe completely wrong, but essential apps like Titanium Backup needs root.
That's why I'm waiting for Nvflash version of Prime 1.5

why wait? use nvflash to install prime 1.4 and takes two extras minutes to flash prime 1.5 after that.

Worth it for me just for the voodoo sound kernel addons. Mmm amp boost and crystal clear sound blows my iPod out of the water.

Jail breaking is a bit complicated, but rooting is much easier, its just dropping the files on the root of the microsd card and tap flash, thats pretty much the basics of rooting, its the developers that have it rough, thanks to them we have it easy. But yes theres good reasons to root your tab.You have overclock kernels to flash, custom roms, themes and theres more to come,i'm sure.

like the guy above said... rooting is worth it for adfree and titanium alone... even if you don't want to install a custom rom (though, how can you not want to install custom roms!!
Can't decide? Try it. It is very easy to unroot and go back if you don't like it and keep your warranty. Trust me though, I had doubts once and I will never have any again. Rooted Transformer is more awesome than it already is.
+1 for voodoo sound added to kernal.. sounds way clearer. Also root for over clock... why sit around a 1 when you can fly at 1.4 or 1.6. I have the desire HD since release also overclocked full time to take advantage of 1.4. You notice a huge difference when going back to 1ghz.

I've had my AT&T Captivate rooted 7 ways to Sunday (currently running an unreleased 2.3.3 derivative called Cognition 5 beta 2). I just can't be bothered on my Transformer though. I haven't been motivated to really sink my teeth into the relatively easy looking process because I don't want to brick it & I'm not seeing any huge benefits yet.
I use Titanium Backup a lot on my Captivate & that's the only thing I'm missing on my Transformer. Other stuff people have mentioned don't really appeal to me at the moment. I'll probably end up rooting at some point, but no huge need for me yet.
OK you guys have me intrigued now, how do I root the TF? Also where do I get this voodoo sound thing from and what's a good overclock app?
rooting takes like 10 minutes unless you're a noob... don't see why you wouldn't want full control over your device.
The only "risk" of rooting is being tempted to deleted a bunch of bloatware and then messing something up.
However, that is what backups are for. Besides, you always learn a lot from screw ups.
Go ahead and do it! It takes longer to back up than to root.
So I am getting a transformer for Christmas... Where should I start as of root and rom?

I am running the Prime 2.1.1 ROM and it's good. I have had trouble with the Revolution HD ROM (didn't restore apps automatically, Market crashes, some apps are shown as not compatible etc.). I will wait until the first ICS ROMs come out before I try anything new (e.g. the KRAKD ROM looks promising).
So maybe i play honeycomb and wait for the ICS roms to drop then cause that works

I have tried revolver, prime, and revolution HD for me revolution is the most stable and the battery is amazing on it. the only thing I don't like is how really stock it is. Revolver is really customizable rom you can do alot tweets but the battery drains fast. Well prime, I was getting alot of fc so I didn't play with it to much.

First off, make sure that you always make a backup of what you have working on the tablet. This will save you much frustration if something goes wrong. Nandroid backups are the ones that will restore a whole ROM for you. As for backing up apps with data, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root).
The two main firsts are that you should get it rooted (very easy now) and install CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod). CWM will allow you to flash ROMs, make backups of the ROM itself and handle various memory functions.
Read through the Stickies in the Android Dev section, they will tell you all information you need to know.
As mentioned above, if you run into any kind of issue, before you post, use the search function and see if it is something that has been asked and answered before. If you are following the steps to whatever you are doing and you get stuck, chances are good someone else has done the same thing and gotten help with it.
Another thing to note is when you choose a ROM, look through its feature list, and if available, the bug list. Looking through both of those should aid you in deciding if that specific ROM or Kernel is something you want to use. If you get as far as flashing Kernels, make sure it is one that is compatible with the ROM you are using, otherwise the tablet probably won't boot and you'll have to flash a Kernel known to work with whichever ROM you chose.
Read thru the stickies above.
First thing you'll need to do is check the serial number on it and make sure you even have the choice of rooting it. AFAIK, most serials after the B60 series have a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything to the contrary yet.

Hey guys,
I just got an Iconia for Christmas and love it to death. Seems like the perfect tablet for me.
I see a lot of stuff on this forum about rooting however and I'm curious what the practical benafits to rooting are. I origionally had planned to route the iconia because I heard it didn't support netflix but the netflix app seems to work fine on my device so I'm happy there.
There were a lot of things that made me want to route my phone (Samsung Epic) such as the desire to tether other devices to it and get rid of all the Samsung, pre-istalled BS and Touch Wiz which made the phone run slowly. Those considerations don't exist here as Honey Comb seems to be plenty fast and there doesn't appear to be many BS additions from Acer.
So, with all that in mind, what exactly does one gain practically by rooting the Iconia?
I rooted my a500 so I could connect to ad-hoc networks and use ntfs drives.

It is a very personal question in the sense that there is no one, single reason why people root. I for example rooted because I needed ad-hoc wifi, otherwise I could have well survived without rooting. Once I did root my tablet I did of course install CWM so I can take a full backup of the whole thing -- better safe than sorry, as they say -- and tried a few different ROMs too, though I then went back to stock as it was the least buggy.
Just ask yourself: is there anything I need root for?
I think I root for a few different reasons.
ClockworkMod for nandroid backup and other things.
Titanium backup for app/data backup and easy bloat remove/restore.
AdFree
overclocking and other performance adjustments
Cifs/Samba support - I have 3 androids with share links on my PC desktop for drag-n-drop file copying without wires.
Root explorer of course.
Drive mount seems to need it.
Oh and theming - I like to theme and make small code changes.
Essentially, if you need to ask that question, you don't need to root your device....
You'll know when you need to...

What does that have to do with the fact that I found all the custom ROMs I tried buggy?
Thanks for the advice everyone.
I was all set to root because I heard that Netflix wasn't functioning on the Iconia and rooting was easy.
Now I find that Netflix works fine and apparently I shouldn't have let my tablet update when I first turned it on.
Guess I'll leave my Iconia alone for now.

One word really - titanium - there is just no better way to make a full backup.
But having said that - with all the rumors of ICS withing maybe weeks - rooting may not be such a good idea right now ... most OTA updates do tend to have issues with rooted devices.
Westa
why root
i root for:
cwm recovery image
optimized roms
titanium backup (altho my stuff is mostly cloud so this is just a bonus)
while i understand why people say only root if you have to, if you've made your way here i'd suggest you do it anyways if only for the clockworkmod recovery while more or less makes your system unbrickable. when you start looking at custom icon packs, gps, wifi and lag fixes, optimized filesystems etc. it gets a lot more appealing.
thanks to those that tirelessly work out the kinks in the process for us.
Havent seen a reason yet to root my A500 as it does everything I want, possibly if I got a wildhair and wanted to install a custom rom. On the other hand I bought a Kindle Fire and I rooted it and had a custom rom installed withing a week, primarily to make it more like my Acer.

Unbrickable? I keep seeing threads of peopleeho havd just bricked their systems while trying to foot. It's the main reason why imhesitant to root.
I just got mine and always thought I would root it, but I don't see the point yet.
I rooted my Evo so that I can remove bloat, increase battery life, and most important wirelessly tether with my tablet.
The battery life on my tablet seems amazing, honeycomb seems fast and the bloat doesn't bother me as much.

i rooted and installed thors rom, its awesome.
No real reason either, I just know from past experience every device is made more enjoyable with the right rom.
Plus with ics coming soon ill have to be able to backup my data to survive the upgrade.
I find out About Rooting (or unlocking) before I buy any device
#1 Freezing Apps (like Deleting, only safer -Titanium Backup)
#2 OverClocking to 1.5 Ghz and still being stable (up to 1.64)
#3 Under clock (216,245 mhz) (saving battery life)
#4 fun to be "ABLE" to tweak out something.
#5 Example : -a new trick to get better Wi-Fi or 3G Signal, or better GPS (you'll need ROOT to edit system data)
KNOWING that you can always get back to stock in under 5-7 min (if you have to bring in device)
Leaves you a better question.

Well bricking your tablet is normal when you try to foot it.
Sorry just made my laugh.
Maybe you should use auto correction.
Or maybe I should keep trying to foot it and see how many attempts I need to brick it.

Hi All,
I tried searching for some answers as to the benefits of rooting the tf101, but my searching skills have failed me and I am coming up empty. Now with ICS coming so soon I feel completely under the gun to make this decision and not research things as completely as I usually would. I am no stranger to rooting; I have a rooted Thunderbolt running a BAMF rom and I have a Nook Color rooted and running CM7. In both of those cases there was a clear reason to root. I wanted to overclock and debloat the Thunderbolt and I wanted to unlock the NOOK to a fuller potential. I have only had the transfomer for a week and so I have not really put it through its paces or identified all of its quirks, but so far it is running like a champ. Why did all of you that have rooted do so? What am I missing by running stock?
TIA! XDA is the technology savior for a middle-aged Kansas soccer mom such as myself who wants to use her tech tools the their fullest advantage!
Root now or forever hold your piece.
If you don't root now and use OTA Rootkeeper before you install ICS, you will have to wait until someone in the Dev community can figure out a root method, and who knows how long that will be. You're better off doing it in advance, instead of being stuck without.
best idea is to root now and then wait for a few days while the great devs get a custom rom or a pure root rom. if you dont then you might be stuck with an unrootable ICS and now that the device has been out for a while everyone who has wanted to root has so there is verry little incentive to find a new method
I understand it could be now or never. What I am not clear on is what functionality I gain by rooting. Is it similar to my phone and NOOK in that I overclock and get better battery life. Is there bloat that I should remove? Are those that are rooting also roming their tablets? If so, is that interface a marked improvement or just different?

You can overclock your 1ghz cpu to 1.2 ghz (max is 1.6ghz I believe) or more to get better performance, you can use titanium backup to remove asus apps you may not use, and you can install things like adaway or LBE privacy guard if you like. Also, some anti-theft apps like Avast or Prey work better with root. Those are just some of the things I do on my tablet with root.

Well I did not root my Transformer because I did not see a need. I rooted my Galaxy S because it was really easy to do. On the transformer however it's a lot more difficult because you need to do something with ADB or whatever. Did not really look into it that much but yeah. Now I do not have to worry of bricking my tablet when I install ICS on it since it's stock and clean
Definitely not hard to root on the Transformer.. or at least the slightly older models... it's been a long time since I rooted it, but all you had to do was enter one or two commands in Linux to root it?
I didn't see a need to root my epic4g, but the moment I did I wished I had months ago..I guess I was just scared, I wanted to think my phone was as good as it could be preroot, and I was afraid to do it. The only benefit to waiting, for me anyhow, was that the custom roms available when I bought the phone were early and underdeveloped..tf101 custom roms are fine as of now. Perfectly stable for what I use it for. I recommend the krakd rom personally, but prime and revolver were nice as well.
Another benefit of rooting is Voodoo-sound if you use your tablet for anything remotely related to audio.

That's only true for the earliest batches where people can use nvflash.
There's lots of people out there which needs an actual exploitable/hackable firmware for rooting it. To these people, once the hole is closed, they wont be able to root.
So yeah. Better root now or remain forever silent.
Okay, I am convinced and will be rooting soon. Now off to figure out how the heck to do that. Seems like nachoroot or viper prime might be what I am looking for. Thanks for all that replied.
