I need a solid (tmobile) phone off contract. I am aware the g2 is almost a year old... on ebay good units are going for $230-ish, and I'm unwilling to shell out $400+ on a device that'll depreciate by 50% within a year. This leaves the G2 and the samsung vibrant, and the vibrant subforums tell me that development is all but dead for that device. If you have any other suggestions for phones in my price range (<300ish) then please do let me know.
I've been a long time user of the OG G1/dream, so I'm looking for something with an active dev community and some choices when it comes to fast and stable roms. How are the roms that you folks are running on your G2's?
Any common hardware issues with roms (like gps)?
Are some units unrootable? What should I look for when I'm buying a used device? What's S-off?
Please excuse all the questions. I appreciate your help.
Yes, I would reccomend the HTC Vision (G2). S-OFF means security off, or on (S-ON), as the case may be. Development is anything but dead for this device, IMHO. There exist rooting guides regardless of your current Android version and plenty of different ROMs. Although you will have to downgrade from the official 2.3 update, if need be. But again, there are excellent guides here on XDA. That's my 2 cents.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Just as stated above the downgrade guide worked for me I traded a g2x for a g2 plus cash due to developement being almost non existant and as its a downgrade in performance its an upgrade in developement. This phone is great you might wanna look into buying a new spring for whatever usedg2 you buy I ordered mine today and you can pick up a used g2 for as little as 80$ with no battery or back cover on craigslist. But they run for around 100 to 200 in houston I wouldn't spend more than 200 for this phone just cause its a tad old my opinion hope I helped
I own a G2 and a vibrant, but I use my G2 because it is a bit more compact, has keyboard, has better call quality and slightly better battery life. I keep the vibrant as backup (we use it on wifi and call it the mini tablet)
The G2 is more complicated to root than vibrant (needs adb), but I've succesfully rooted mine from 2.2 and my wife's from 2.3.4. The samsung merely required downloading a couple things on my computer, then a one click root. We both currently run MIUI ROM because we like the abundance of themes, options and better than stock battery life.
My wife's phone did succumb to the black screen issue known with G2s, luckily it was still under HTC 1 year warranty. That was how I had to learn to root 2.3.4 once we got the phone back.
The biggest issue I've had with the samsung was missing calls. It was having issues maintaing signal in my house. My G1 had no issue, and my G2 is better than the vibrant. The vibrant is very thin, amazingly thin.
Hope that helps.

i downgraded my Desire Z about 2 days ago and its all rooted now, im definatly no expert on the subject but the guides i used worked fine for me as long as you can follow instructions
oh and as a tip from a noobie
* copying items per usual CTRL + C will take you out of shell remember that copying in CMD can be done by pressing the ENTER key.
that was the reason i screwed up first time xD
desire Z is great only the battery life has bugged me so far.

$230 is too much. I see them on craigslist frequently in the $150-180 range. it's still worth it, but why pay %50 more if you don't have to ?
the g1 is a great device. reliability has been great for ours. my son uses a g1 and it might get reboot once every 3 months, constant wifi, and used mostly for youtube and as a camera. the g2 is a better device. much much faster, in every way.
i don't know of a gps issue. both of ours pick up GPS in 3-4 seconds unless we're in a canyon. takes longer then.
all units are rootable. there is a section here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2 that should be exactly what you need to complete root.
i would suggest checking the camera lense with a bright light very carefully. mine has a hairline crack, and it effects some photos depending on orientaion. i bought it USED, as I do everything. exchanged a couple of them for different hardware problems, but most likely related to hard use (women).
i use cyanogenmod 'nightlies' on mine. they're very fast, stable, and feature packed.
also, the reasons we'll be sticking with G2's for the extended future:
excellent camera
dedicated camera button
dedicated volume rocker
sensible headphone jack placement
very good cellular signals
very good wifi signals
very good bluetooth (map transfers in the woods with no data available on cellular)
the hardware keyboard is EXCELLENT < this alone is a deciding factor, it's very very good, and we are hardware people. no touch screen keyboard can compare in our opinion.
very good battery life: EDGE and underclocking agressively means no charging needed on camping trips, and LOTS of pictures
also 720p HD video capable. it's very good quality.
excellent noise cancelling
excellent call quality
loud external speaker
good luck !
If you're buying a used one, test everything you can before you lay down the cash!
Bring along some earphones, plug them in and make sure you can hear audio (tests the audio jack)
If possible, Bring along a microUSB cable and plug the phone into a PC. Make sure the phone charges and is recognized by the PC. Put the phone into USB mode and make sure you see the contents of the phone's SD Card (tests the USB connector)
If an micro SD card isn't included, bring one alone and test it on the phone. Somethimes the connector gets trashed.
Test the physical keyboard, make sure each key registers.
If possible, test the SIM slot too -- plug in a good SIM card and make sure there's no error.
Slide the keyboard open and closed repeatedly. make sure the screen doesn't act strangely (flickering could be a sign of a bad connector cable)
What else?
I don't think "women" are responsible for hardware issues with your phone, ohgood.
And to the OP, there are known GPS issues. Not everyone has them, and there are fixes out there. So, although it is a known issue, it should not be a deal breaker. I just upgraded radios, installed the stock HTC GPS drivers (on an AOSP ROM), and GPS locks in 5 seconds and stays that way for hours while using navigation. Granted all these things were not necessary, but they have improved my cell & GPS signals.
It is truly a great phone, had mine since january and don't regret it one bit
PROS-fast,never lags, now has android 2.3,good screen size & quality, every app I ever dl works great with the G2,great camera and video, battery can be great if u add apps such as an app killer & 2g-4g switch(I can easily go a full day on heavy use switched on 2g then I just switch it to 4g when using internet browing) & an awsome keyboard.
Only CONS in my opinion are- kinda on the heavy side & thick (advantages of having a hardware keyboard) & I feel it lacks a front facing camera
Hope this helps

Great phone, had mine for about a week. I like the keyboard and once you get used to it you can type pretty fast, overall the device is pretty snappy and works well. The z hinge is okay, there is a bit of shake when the device is closed and youre using the touch screen, and my device has a bit of dust under the screen. I paid 320 AUD for mine brand new, I haven't rooted it and I'm running stock gingerbread with HTC sense

A perfect phone.... I donno why but I feel the keys a bit harder... and the missing front camera.
Hi,
I'm a fresh user of this device (bought it new a week ago on contract) and I absolutely love the keyboard. I was a G1 user that switched to iP4 but lasted only 7 months. Physical keys are a must I do agree that front cam would be nice but since it's not a feature I would use on a daily basis then I agreed to the fact. Battery isn't awesome but lasts a day. Great signal strenght, wifi locks and holds nicely, havent had a chance to test GPS.
So far on stock 2.3.4 but dunno for how long

Beyond worth it phone. To my knowledge, its the fastest single core phone with the best battery life. U heard the guy testimonial on taking it camping. On an AOSP rom, 4g/3g, bluetooth, gps, wifi off, it uses next to no power. I mean its sick. Ive tested it and left it sitting alone for 2days and came back to it saying 99% battery.
Pros:
Its safely overclocked to 1.2GHz because Processor was designed to run at 1GHz
Keyboard (Includes 3 shortcut buttons. +2more if ya use the search button too)
Camera quality
Huge active developing community
Quality materials, I mean its solid built, no denying that.
Runs every app I throw at it with no issues.
Superb wireless quality (Signal (3g/4g/Calls), wifi, gps, bluetooth are just AWESOME)
Rocker is the right size, sensitivity (Mentioned because its perfect for at work and changing songs w/o the need to take it out my pocket ^_^ )
Headphone jack is solid (Had a Moto Cliq that was iffy)
Cons:
No front facing camera (Honestly those who have it, rarely use it cause U can just call the person)
Only 2 Color indicator
Hefty/Weight (To me a benefit cause it dont fall out or drop)
Lil outdated manufactor wise.
I honestly dont feel its outdated tho because any experienced android user will tell ya. Getting the first batch of a new technology has downfalls 1/2 - 1year later. Case in point, all the buyers of the first Dual-Core phones envy those who got the Dual-Core and 3d after less then a year later. My thing is, Ill wait until the 3d been fine tuned a bit and I bet it will be perfected.
2more things. It has a KEYBOARD. The wireless in it is beyond great. I never had a dropped call, problem with gps, wifi or bluetooth. In fact I hook my bluetooth up to my radio and can walk 15 feet away w/o a problem. I enjoyed it when I can go in my trunk, adjust my "thump in the trunk" and change the volume/song wirelessly.

Currently rocking a captivate, love the phone but thinking about getting a galaxy tab and downsizing my phone to aria with CM and overclocked to 850. I can make about 200$ towards the tab purchase selling my cappy and picking up a aria.
Any input? anyone make the move from a bigger screen?
The Aria's size and build is really great, with a lot of nice hardware features.
I'm not sure about overclocking though, it's reasonably fast without it, and would likely result in about 26 minute battery life.
I actually just posted a big long comparison on another forum for a debate between the two. I'll copy & paste the whole thing for ya, if you care to read it.
----------------------------------
So I'll lay my full opinion on the table, as its a pretty recent experience for me. It's a long story, so if you're patient enough to read it, here it goes:
I pre-ordered an iPhone 4, and when I got it, it was defective. Not one of the reception issues or other things people were complaining about at the time... it was just defective. Being that stores hadn't even filled all of their pre-orders, there wasn't a chance in hell I was getting a replacement any time soon. I decided, since that had been my 3rd iPhone (had an original 2g, and a 3G-S before it) that I'd head to the Android side and try it out.
I don't remember how I found out about the Captivate, but I think a friend mentioned it and we started looking into it. It seemed like a great phone, but it wasn't being released until about 2 weeks down the line at this point in time. I spoke to some folks at Best Buy where I had bought the iPhone 4 and expressed my interest in the Captivate. I was able to get the Aria for the time being, and return it with no return fee and exchange it for the Captivate when it was released.
My first reactions with the Aria were mixed. I was blown away by Android from the start, but knowing (spec's wise) that the Captivate was a better phone I never took the time to fully appreciate it. I was also naive to many things about it since I was new to Android and hadn't fully wrapped my head around it yet. So, then I got my Captivate and dove head first into Android. At first I loved it. It's a powerful phone and does a lot of things real well. It has its downsides, though. My biggest gripe at first was the GPS. I use a GPS pretty frequently for various things, and I hadn't bought a new standalone GPS unit because I had this phone. So it not working mattered to me. It rarely connected at all until the over the air update. Then I randomly had problems with it turning itself off. My first one was fine for months, then one day I pulled it out of my pocket to check the time and it was off. Then it happened again the next day... and then twice the next. I got a warranty replacement. That one did the same thing after a month. Got that one replaced... lasted about 2 weeks, same problem. I charge the phone once a night when I get home from work until it's full, and unplug it afterwards. The battery usually lasts me to at least 40% even with heavy use on the average day... so can't see it being that I messed up all 3 batteries some how. Also, when I'd turn it back on the battery was never dead. I've never had a similar problem with any of the smartphones I've had in the past.
So, I went back to AT&T and told them I want an Aria instead. I had done some research on the Andriod phones available on AT&T currently and I thought it would be my next best option. I went on different forums, read reviews, went into stores and played with the different options, etc. I knew I would be making some concessions and giving up some things, but at this point I just wanted a reliable smartphone.
So I've had the Aria for a few days now (less than a week), but I already realize so many things that I hadn't noticed in comparison to the Captivate at first because I was new to Android and didn't know better. Here's my list:
1. I love Sense. I was ready to load up ADW right away because I was use to using it, because TouchWiz sucked. I can't see myself replacing Sense anytime soon.
2. The GPS works perfectly. Connects just about instantly, and is way more accurate than any of my Captivate's were.
3. I actually appreciate the small size more now after having a big 4" screen for a while. While it was weird to type on the smaller screen at first, SwiftKey made that all better. Now I don't want a big screen phone anymore.
4. Based off of the dBm and asu numbers, I actually get a little better reception on my Aria at the places I frequent most.
5. A lot of my favorite apps run generally less buggy on the Aria then on any of my Captivates. Handcent is one of them, for example.
6. Now, I don't know or care why, but stock vs. stock my Aria seems smoother, snappier, and faster navigating around general apps and such. No, games don't play better on it for obvious reasons. Everything else that I use, though... not laggy at all.
The bad:
1. Storage... not a lot of room for apps (though, I haven't run out yet). I stuck my 16gig stick in it for pictures and such, but without Froyo on it yet, the low internal storage thing kinda sucks. Yes I know I can put a froyo rom on it and store apps to SD. I may, but right now I don't have any need to.
2. The camera doesn't compare. The only thing it matches up to is megapixels, which mean nothing really. The Captivate camera, even without a flash, is amazing. The Aria camera still does the trick for simple stuff, though.
3. The optical wheel can be finicky, but maybe I'm just not use to it yet.
4. I wish the screen was a little bigger for certain websites and things... but its really not as bad as I'd thought it would be.
In all honestly... those 4 things are the worst I can say about it so far. It's a great phone, and its changed what I thought I "needed" in a smartphone.

I have a Captivate and my wife has the Aria.
Captivate rocking Cognition FroYo
Aria rocking Cyanogen FroYo
The Aria is a great little phone and I'm always tinkering with it BUT the difference in screen size and resolution is so many worlds apart that I don't think I could ever downgrade on the screen. It's like the difference between high and standard def tv. Now that I have a nice HD TV I cannot stand to watch standard definition anymore. The Super Amoled screen cannot be beat.
Besides the screen size, from a Captivate point of view, the keyboard can be a little cramped but i can still use but just not as easy.
It sounds like you will be using the Aria for normal phone stuff and your Galaxy Tab will become your surfing and gaming machine. That would be a pretty cool setup if you didn't mind carrying 2 devices. The ultimate setup if you could afford it would be the Captivate and the Galaxy Tab!
I know the Captivate has gotten a bad rap, but I have not had any issues with mine. GPS is weak but it does work but then again I have GPS in my vehicles so I don't really use it.
Thanks for the replies guys, I just want a smaller phone.. I think im going to pick up a Aria on craigslist and give it a go for a few days, can always sell it again.
Thanks again!
Ok guys ive been reading mixed comments about the Atrix that its good and that its not. I was in 2 minds whether to get the Atrix or the LG Optimus 2X. Originally I was gonne get which ever I could get my hands on 1st. Both have their pros and cons i.e. camera, ram, locked bootloader, screen quality, internal memory etc
Well I decided to get the LG and this comment made in the o2x forum sealed it
Ive been using my atrix couple weeks an am falling out of love with it fast, after yesterday it ramdomly shut off 2x an today once sofar. The screen is beging to bother me the screendoor washed out look. Allready returned lapdock, that cant even compare to a real laptop in my opion. So im looking hard at the Lg 2x for an upgrade of camera, gyroscope, performance, faster upgrade to gingerbread, real mirroring, 1080p recording an play back, 7.1 sound, totaly unlocked phone. Yes 512mb memory is trade off, but operating system will handly that, an the battery is non issue, I'll have a spare battery or a charging source anyway. Not to mention not paying 20/month to not tether, an having my data speeds throttled down to 1.5mb down an 310kb up lat of 350-800. An Atrix doesnt do LTE

But now im stiill thinking what to do as Im so impatient and want a dual core phone asap. So I made this poll to see everyones view
Coming from a N1, there's not that much improvement. I'm satisfied, but not amazed by this phone. Still debating if I should return it and wait it out.
My impressions:
-Definitely faster, everything is much snappier, but browsing-wise there's not much of a difference.
-Screen is bright and sharp (as long as you don't put your face within inches of the screen you won't really notice the pentile display. But it's still an annoyance when you notice it)
-Camera is marginally better. Pretty disappointing for a flagship device. Plus the media gallery lags like this is a 2 year old phone when zooming in and out.
-GPS is amazing
-Pretty much Motorblur slows this phone's speed and potential. If this device was stock or able to flash truly custom ROMs, it'd be screaming in speed and blow every competitor out of the water.

Custom ROMS would make it a whole lot better.
19 voters.. 2 responses.. lol
I think it lives up to the hype.. couple quirks I miss from my captivate but.. besides that the phone is solid.
Now I just got to wait for Tango to support our phones :T
Came from the LG Expo. A much better improvement than the last generation phones. The phone just beats about everything out of the expo. Only thing getting to me is that the expo's fingerprint scanner doubled as a trackpad (would've been nice to have for editing text's)

This pretty much summed it up
I think this is a situation that there is not enough tangible usage of a dual core for majority of people. Most of people wont notice any improvements in UI speed. We need evolution of software just like in iOS that despite this same architecture people could understand what the new software is bring them.
It feels a bit like a premature technology and we are all living dreaming of tomorrow while we are beta testing for Motorola/Samsung/HTC.
Just 2 cents.
Believe what you want but I love the Atrix. Had a captivate and it doesn't compare. My phone has never rebooted or lagged- I don't know what others do to theirs but my phone is rock solid.

I'm lovin mine all around. For people who return it because of locked bootloader, I'd say that you knew that when you bought it if it's a dealbreaker.
The webtop dock alone has made this phone exceed the hype. All thanks to the devs
You guys rock

i have a nexus one and now and atrix and have had it for about a week and i love it. It works great, no random reboots or anything ... just smooth sailing.
I know i can not customize it like I could my N1 but I think that day will come in time. I'll wait ...
Yes, it lived up to the hype in my opinion.
Came from Nexus One. Love the Atrix. It fast and solidly built. Im not sure why everyone said motorblur slow the phone down. I use ADW launcher and it scream.
The Atrix doesn't live up to the Best of CES 2011 hype. The locked bootloader, 1080p "coming soon" recording, overpriced lapdock, overpriced multimedia dock, and good-but-not-great screen keep it from living up to the incredible hype it garnered when it was announced.
Your poll is worded slightly differently: Was the Atrix worth it?
I just came from an ancient Iphone 3g, so the Atrix is absolutely amazing in pretty much every way compared to it and finally getting to use my upgrade was absolutely worth it!
I originally tried out a Captivate for about a week back when I first came up for an upgrade last november. It kept turning itself off (not sleep, total shutdown so I wouldn't receive calls, txt, email ect.) which was a deal breaker. The useless GPS didn't help it's case either. Screen was gorgeous, speed was decent, build quality was ok, battery life was ok. Anyways, I sent the Captivate back after a week, I couldn't have a phone that didn't take phone calls.
First and foremost I love the speed. This thing is lightning fast and seems to have horsepower to burn under the hood. Second is the battery life, I get home from work most of the time with over 40% battery power remaining which is absolutely astounding, my iphone couldn't make it through a full day without getting some juice at my desk and while the captivate did, it was usually at 10-15%. I'm also using the Atrix more than either of the others because I don't feel like I have to conserve battery power to make it through the day.
After those two big features, there are a bunch of less important things that I like:
Finger print scanner is great, I can unlock the phone without even looking at it. I know this doesn't sound important, but it's surprisingly useful when I'm just trying to pull information off my phone quickly and can have it already unlocked as I'm pulling it out of my pocket.
GPS is the best I've experienced on a phone, and better than some dedicated GPS units I've had the displeasure to work with.
Build quality (contrary to some reports I've read) is quite good imo. The phone itself is very sturdy feeling when held by the sides. The back cover is a bit flimsy, but it is also what convinced me to skip getting a case for the Atrix, if it gets scratched I'll just get a new back.
Gorilla Glass is not glued to LCD. Should keep repair costs down.
HDMI out is great, webtop with working firefox extensions is awesome.
Some good, some bad:
Screen resolution is good (colors not so much). The auto-brightness seems to be set a little low imho. I only notice a pentile effect on particularly small+thin fonts.
Camera is surprisingly good in low-light and indoor conditions. Not especially great overall though, tint seems a little off. May just need to set up a custom photoshop filter to correct it.
Call quality is good in quiet conditions, very clear reception and a detailed microphone. Not so good in noisy or windy conditions, the mic picks up a lot of extraneous noise, people are often asking me what's going on or where I am now based on background noise.
I haven't had much reason to use the front facing camera...frankly with AT&T's network I think video chat is a gimmick more than anything else.
I wonder about the finger print scanner/button longevity.
I wouldn't necessarily say the Atrix is the best phone around, but it was the best phone that fit my requirements (ATT, asap, batt life, fast) and so far I like it a lot.
Running ADW Launcher and really like the Advanced Clock widget.
I took mine back and have the Nexus 1 now; I liked the speed but for the most part, my 2.3.3 phone is about as fast; the main thing slowing these phones down now is the network speeds anyway.
If I'm on a wifi network, they're all pretty much the same speed.
Living up to the hype? Definitely not. There are a lot of small problems with this phone that a lot of people don't like; to me, it feels slightly rushed.
I came from an iPhone 4 and I haven't missed the iPhone experience yet. I started with the HTC Inspire which is a nice phone but the battery is rotten and the volume from the phone was pathetic. The Atrix has been an awesome phone for me. It has pretty good battery life so far and yes there are no truly custom ROMs but Adeo (REDUX) has made the UI lag go away on my end and I know others have said the same thing. I am loving the experience of this phone.
Just know that anytime you get a phone shortly after a better one will come out. It's all user preference and what you want and what you think is important. I'm happy but guy x may not be happy. So use one and if you don't like it don't keep it.
I went from a HTC Fuze directly to the Atrix. I love it. (almost) Everything about it. I have played with the Inspire and a couple other 2.1/2.2 devices (girlfriends captivate) and this thing stomps the crap out of them. The colors are just a little off, but that's probably just me going for an extreme upgrade from the phone I had before.
The *ONLY* gripe I have about it is the locked HSUPA. But with all good things come some bad, I think I'm gonna stick it out with the Atrix. Not only that but Spectral Souls looks amazing on it
Guys, please, help me to make a right decision.
Is it possible to buy AT&T version of Motorola Atrix and use it outside US? Is it simple to unlock it? Or where do you recommend to purchase unlocked phone.
P.$.: does motorola have any plans to upgrade it 2.3/3.1 in the future? As I know it's not the trivial to customize firmware for motorola phones (my old G1 can be customized without any problems).
Thanks a lot.
The phone is great nuff said.... We are all a bit too picky but for what its worth this is really the only phone out right now that can take down the iphone 4. My iphone 4 has just been sitting on my night table since I got the Atrix. Atrix has so much more potential and the Android os is so much more pleasing than iIS. Once the bootloader gets cracked its game over!

Hello XDA family,
I used to be a regular on the Captivate forum before I moved to WP7. I'm getting a little bored with the newest from Microsoft, and was thinking about moving back to the Android side of life. I've been watching the development of the atrix for quite a while and now that it's been release, I figured I'd look into it.
So, I head back to XDA to get the low down and I see a lot of mixed opinions. I know the bootloader is locked, but like the DroidX, I figured it's only a matter of time before it's cracked, right? Either way, most reviews say that the phone is fine out of the box, and the OTA takes that even further. There is some talk about the mic being jacked on some handsets causing muffled sound, MotoBlur...etc...etc...
Is this phone worth the money? I used to swap roms all the time with the captivate, but that was mainly because it needed it. File system performance, GPS, chronic shut downs, poor battery life, all plagued that device and my man DesignGears and others did their damnedest to correct that. Does this phone have straight up broken features that require the roms at the moment?
Is the screen as bad as everyone says? I'm used to the 3GS, and my last two phones had SAMOLED screens (Captivate, Focus).
I guess, I just don't want to do the ATT phone return merry-go-round again like I did with the Capy (I went through 9)...

I'd say don't get your hopes up here. I don't think the bootloader will be defeated unless there's a leak from Moto or an official way to do it from Moto.
Other than that, as a potential Atrix owner I'm interested in the answers to all your questions, too!
I came from captivate to focus to Atrix. I have all 3 laying on my desk and just wait h sim card to whichever I want to use. I find myself carrying the Atrix over 90% of the time because it just works. Never have had any of the random issues people talk about on here. I own a construction company and use my phone hard. Email in the field all day, talk 5000-6000 minutes a month and the battery lasts all day. I use a bluetooth headset so I have never noticed the muffled mic issue, however the update we just got was suppossed to correct that. I would buy another one without hesitation. When the high speed upload is turned on it will pretty much be a perfect device for me. Front camera chat works with Tango app. Gps works out of the box. Good battery and no lag.
Hope this helps with your decision.

The Atrix works great for me, except for the call quality issue. Great battery life, fast performance in demanding games and apps, very stable.

Ive been wanting to try the atrix i just see a lot of mixed reviews so no where better to ask but here true users! Thanks for any replies maybe yall can help
Its depend on what you want, But for me the phone is a solid one, good gps (coming from htc inspire and the gps there was an horror) the screen seems very nice 275ppi, very fast phone, feels great in the hand. If you looks in the htc's dev there are much more support from dev than the atrix but here the roms are really nice, no craps, no experiments, and in some time we're getting cyan. I really like my phone!
I personally am in love with the phone. Great screen size, great resolution, great touch response, insane amount of onboard storage and ram so that apps never freeze up, and battery life that has made me question what good battery life really should be (even with moderate daily use I can go 30+ hours without a charger, I can go days if I don't use the phone at all, and about 9 hours of intense useage). It runs every app I've encountered like butter, including intense HD games (thanks to the Tegra processor and graphics).
Good phone, fast, slim, etc... but if your looking to get one in the near future, I'd wait till Oct. and get the Nexus Prime. Just my opinion though.

It is a very fast phone, you almost don't have any lag. Nice big 4" screen which works well even under bright sunlight. Though there are a lot of complaints about Motoblur, I kind of like it, it has almost everything I need, on my previous phone Motorola Milestone, I had to install all kinds of widgets just to get my phone to do these things.
More importantly if you are looking for a perfect phone, it is not and there is really no perfect phone. What is important is what are looking for in a phone? If you could list what you are looking for in a phone, then probably the users here would be able to provide you with input as to whether the phone will meet your expectations.
Cheers!
The mixed reviews of the Atrix are caused from the old radio roms which were current on 2.2.2 froyo roms. Now on stock 2.3.4 and latest radio rom, atrix is a true beast. It does everything instantly when you click and the best part, you always have a battery enough for the next charge. I truly love my atrix and always trust it wherever i'm, whatever i tend to do. It has no limits.
Plus, you can extend its functions way more with a lapdock accessory.
I bought mine about a month before the Gingerbread OTA update. As soon as that came out I applied it from MSU, then waited a little more than a week and finally took the plunge and ran mramirezusa's unlock/CWM/root script.
I really like the phone now and have absolutely no issues with it -- though I do miss the "white text on black background" menus in the previous stock ROM. I'm running navalynt's piCRUST ROM to dispense with some of the bloat, but the phone runs fine on the stock 4.5.91/2.3.4 ROM.
My only complaint is that the back cover could be a bit beefier. It uses tiny plastic clips to snap onto the main phone body. I wish it used a slide & lock type of affair like the BlackBerry.
I pulled the battery many times while learning how to flash the phone, and the back cover has gotten a little "creaky". Putting a case on the phone will firm it up enough so you don't hear or feel this. And learning how to use adb or fastboot to reboot when possible (instead of pulling the battery) will save wear and tear on the cover. But it's not like I ever need to pull the battery during regular use. I've only needed to do this when flashing didn't work for some reason (usually because I did something wrong).
Before this phone I had an HTC Desire HD. That phone was beautiful but it was simply too big for my hand, I couldn't comfortably hold it and push buttons with the same hand, and I felt that I needed to keep it in my smoking jacket when not in use. Gave new meaning to the phrase "Ginger-bread"; I always held it gingerly like some precious piece of jewelry. A bit too elegant for my tastes -- and heavy to boot.
I was pretty sure that HTC Desire would slip out of my hand within the first week of owning it, so I went back to Costco and picked out the next cheapest Android phone, which turned out to be the Atrix. It's much more my style. Nothing flashy except what's on the inside.

Useful thread as I very close to buying one. My choices (at the min) are the HTC Sensation, Samsung SII & Atrix and I know that everybody is going to scream 'get the SII' but I don't want a phone with such a large screen. I use my phone a lot but don't read ebooks or surf when in my lounge as I have an Android tablet for all of that.
I want a powerful phone that will run all my apps, allow me to 'play' with ROM's, have DLNA / HDMI connectivity and have a battery life better than 8 hours so (for me) the Atrix seems like the perfect device. I like the idea of the dock as it could replace my tablet but not at the current cost ! The Multimedia dock looks decent though as my plan would be to stream movies from my NAS through Atrix to HDMI TV.
I like the power that the Atrix produces, especially the 1gb ram. No other Android phone runs as smooth that I've used.
With that said, I don't like Qhd. Text font is too small at times IMHO. I've changed the build.prop density, but it can still be an eye strain.
The biggest thing that I want from ICS is hopefully a way to change a screen resolution like a PC.
Do that and this phone would be flawless!...
I came from Samsung Captivate. These are my own thoughts and YMMV
- The screen is not as good as the captivate. I mean yellow color seems funky
- The camera is baaad.
- Rest of the phone is good. 'Solid' is the word I would use. GPS is superlative. Well, i think coming from Captivate any GPS would feel superlative. .
- ROM options are less than that on Captivate, but we had a late start because of the locked bootloader. Soon Atrix will catch up.
I love it and don't regret dumping the captivate.
thanks for all the replies so far! seems like a great phone

the one thing i hate most about this phone -
its so f*cking slippery! seriously.. if you have sweaty hands.. good luck holding onto this thing without a case.
other then that ---- the voice quality on phone calls incoming and outgoing is not great, but its also not horrible either --- middle of the pack.
the speaker is very loud, i find using that to talk to people is much easier then holding the phone up to my ear because i can understand people better.
the screen is fine... i like that i can actually see the thing in sunlight.
I've had mine for a little over a month now, I will say that I love this phone.
It is the perfect size for me; big but not too big.
It is FAST
The battery life is better than most smartphones
Camera is OK, it'll pass
ROM selection is growing.
Look and feel are almost HTC like IMHO
Price is spot on!!!
Really enjoyed when I used it. Feels great in hand.

For me it's been a great phone. And I've used a lot of smartphones under different platforms.
Android for me is rock solid and very nice to tweak and work on.
But the Atrix is a device on a different level thanks to it's Webtop implementation when used along with its accesories, specially the Lapdock, which has allowed me to leave my bulky and heavy laptop at home.
I really recommend you to try it and get some (if not all) of it's accesories. You will not regret it.

I just got mine last week when they were free at Best Buy. I was planning to hold out for the SGS2 but decided free was a wise option to take. My previous phone was the Dell Streak (standard 1ghz snapdragon phone) and we didn't have much in the way of custom roms so I was excited to switch to a phone with a real development community.
I never even booted the phone into the stock rom. My coworkers all have stock moto phones and motoblur is just bad. But running Alien #4 this phone screams and is glitch free. I think it's literally twice as fast as my Streak and am very pleased with my decision to get this phone. The screen is beautiful and the "4g" speeds are a nice little boost over standard 3g (I live in a town of around 175,000 so it's not a major city and data speeds are nice and fast at all times of the day).
Pros:
-Screaming fast
-Lots of accessories
-High resolution screen
-Huge battery
-Lots of internal memory
-Several good roms to choose from
-Gaming
Cons:
-Feels tiny after having the 5" Streak
-Camera is decent but not as good as others
-Can get pretty hot (but is not as hot as some other tegra2 devices I've tried
Here is a doubter who became a believer after the atrix gbread upgrade:
http://www.phonedog.com/videos/motorola-atrix-4g-gingerbread-hands-on/
"With the Gingerbread update, the Motorola Atrix 4G rises to become the best Android handset on AT&T." ....pretty powerful stuff..
The atrix looks nice but I just wondered about dev support. That's why I got an inspire.
These threads are getting redundant, but I feel like I have to chime in.
I have a very rare illness, called AMOLED. If a phone doesn't have an AMOLED screen, I can't use it </firstworldproblems>.
A while back, I dropped my Nexus One, and somehow cracked the touch screen. I've dropped it dozens of times, onto concrete, tile, wood, but for some reason, this three foot drop onto carpet did it.
After a couple of weeks, I gathered up the guts to try and replace the touch screen, and succeeded! I lost a rubber gasket that sits behind the microphone, and now the mic is no longer insulated from the vibrator motor; call waiting notifications always result in on the other end. Also, I managed to wreck WiFi reception.
This got me looking at new phones, and after finding a good deal on a Rogers RAZR, I bit. Super AMOLED. Not-Samsung (read: real build quality, thumbsup to Motorola for building a SOLID good looking phone). Amazing call quality. Noise cancelling mics. It felt like a true upgrade to the Nexus, rather than that Galaxy junk. It feels awkward in my hands compared to the N1, but I'm starting to get used to it.
I took the N1 apart again to try and fix it before selling it, and managed to get the WiFi working! The mic is also somewhat insulated now. After jamming the microSIM + adapter in there, however, I'm not too thrilled with the RAZR anymore. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the trackball. Or proper RTL language support. Or the unlocked bootloader. Or the size/weight. Or the battery life (sorry Moto). Even with its dying loudspeaker, rattling vibrator, and finicky touchscreen, I don't want to give the N1 up.
Anyone else having withdrawal? Part of me wants to wait until the (inevitable) Motorola Nexus. I got a new battery for the N1 a couple of months back, and it actually beats the new phone on battery life. I've found brand new loudspeakers from Hong Kong for $5, and for $5 I can't go wrong. I'm probably going to keep my eyes open for a broken one to yank the gasket out of as well.
Right there with ya. My T-Mo bands AMOLED N1 is still going strong. Power button is fine. And original battery still does well! (got mine right at release in Jan 2010)
Thanks to CM7 it still feels like everything I need. And now with Blackrose, CM9 and other ICS roms coming, I plan on another year at least.
Size is great (>4" screen is too big for a phone IMHO), build quality/solidity, trackball wake and notifications (and use in fine cursor positioning!)... its got just what I want. Haven't seen any issue with processing power yet (I don't game on my phone, so 3D performance is immaterial for me) so the 1GHz single core is fine.
Long live the N1!

Well said!
I just wish T-Mobile would get off their lazy butt and release something new. My contract just finished but I would prefer to be able to use the N1 as a backup phone.
I wanted to upgrade mine this year but I also find myself very emotionally attached. I am running an ICS rom and even though it's a bit slow and it's beta I can't picture myself using a different phone. This was my first android phone so I feel it's my first child
IMHO our N1 is much better than the current releases in performance.
I bought mine jus 2 months before but researched almost 3 months prior and zeroed on Nexus one.
I m jus lovin it

I've been using my N1 for exactly 2 years now. I never thought I'd keep it this long, but frankly, no other android phone has come out that I would prefer. The biggest deterrent for me these days is the screen size. I don't want a screen larger than 4 inches, it's just too big for me for a mobile device.
I am eligible for an upgrade, but I haven't seem anything I want. I would get the T-Mo SGS2, but it's not supported by CyanogenMod (stupid TMo swapping the CPU for their "42Mbps 4G"). Guess I'll wait til my Nexus dies, re-up my contract, sell the TMo phone I get for an unlocked phone.
My power button still works. My Case-Mate Tough Case has saved my phone a bunch of times. Got a PowerGen battery a few months back (having two batteries is really nice)
Loving ICS!

I bought a used N1 not too long ago. I'm having issues with the return key not responding. Even when I hit slightly above the arrow key it doesn't respond most of the time. Otherwise I love the N1. The build quality is excellent. I love the size of it, esp since I have small hands. I wish Google stuck with HTC to make their phones. I'm sorry to say, but Samsung devices feels cheap. They use cheap plastic materials. At least HTC use some metal in their devices. I have the HTC Amaze and that phone is rock solid.
To the OP, I had the Motorola Razr and it's an excellent phone. RF and call quality rocks. But the Razr was too wide for my hands. My hand started hurting after holding it for 20 mins. I returned it. If it wasn't for the size I would have kept the Razr. That phone kicks ass!
P.S. I don't plan on selling my N1. I only had it for less than a month and I'm already attached to it.
sexy nexy
N1was the phone introduced me to android environment that was 2 years a go after having some financial problems i sold it after the financial storm passed my first try was an andrid phone again but none of the phones inclouding many HTCs never gave me the same taste so i went to some second hand shops to find one but no succes many of them i found was cosmeticly in bad shape than i found one laying under a pile of broken phones i asked for its prize the seller said it is bricked knowing it is allmost imposible to brick a nexus1 i took the risk and asked for the prize at the and i was the owner of a bricked but nearly brand new n1 i charged the battery at home knowing if the chargin lite comes on there is hope so it was chargin after coyple of hours i fired the phone and i saw the recovery screen i wiped it many many times an tried CM 7 on it result i am able to write this here with the same phone runing flawlessly i am sure this adventure is only can be possible to a happy end with an nexus one
I Love my Nexus One
Love my N1 still but my 2 biggest complaints are the fake multitouch and no tv out/hdmi capabilities.
I'm still waiting for a new phone that is enough of a bump to upgrade, hopefully the SGS 3 is everything I need.
LOL. I have a thread similar to this going.
Isn't it weird that we get attached to our devices? My SGS2 will be delivered today and I'm excited about it but at the same time I don't want to retire my N1. The phone has been out for so long that there is a ton of good dev and a strong sense of familiarity with it. Now I've got to learn a bunch of new tricks on a phone that isn't getting a lot of dev yet and that has a locked bootloader.
I understand where you are coming from.
i got the mytouch 4g (htc glacier/htc panache)
ive been looking to replace my n1 for a while and always had my eye on the mytouch4g. its an upgrade without breaking the wallet. ill wait for really innovative technology before i spend a lot on a phone
the only thing i miss is the trackball LED notifications. the MT4G has LED notification but only 3 colours
Aside from a couple of (admittedly nasty) manufacturing defects, HTC broke the mold with the N1. The supplied pouch has kept mine pristine after all this time and the OEM dock that i drop it into every evening when i return home still works perfectly too!
The only other phone that i know of that even has that docking ability is the GN, and the dock still can't be found anywhere to buy yet.
Kudos to the CM team too. It's largely down to them that this phone is still amazing to use on a daily basis. I'm sure a year from now they'll have turned ICS into something decent too, and perhaps with a nice GB theme i'll consider flashing it to give my N1 another year of life!
Long may it last!
I'm searching for a new phone since a few month now but nothing seems to be able to replace the n1 even though mine is pretty beat-up (n1 had a date with my washing mashine -> no fm-radio, no camera, no bluetooth).
The only thing that is starting to bother me is low nand memory.
Spec wise there are amazing phones like the sgs2 out there but who whants to have a plastic bomb after owning such a solid build device like the n1? Mine fell to the ground a bunch of times and it allways survived. Even 6 foot on concrete couldn't kill it.
In my opinion there are three important things about a new phone:
- specs
- build quality, design
- community
There is no phone on the market or on the horizon that will be able to be top notch at all those fields.
Those are the phones I think about:
- Galaxy Nexus -> humongous plastic beast (specs +, comm ++, build -)
- SGS II -> similar to the GN but smaller (specs +, comm +, build -)
- Sensation -> bad community, "low" ram (specs o, comm o, build +)
- G2x / Optimus Speed -> plastic + huge bezel (specs +, comm o, build o)
- Nexus S -> (specs o, comm ++, build o)
- Evo 3D -> Sensation with 1Gb Ram worse screen, battery life and no community (specs +, comm -, build o)
- Atrix -> (specs +, comm o, build o)
I think atm the best option seems to be the sensation since build quality is a major point to me. I can live with not so great specs.
But I'm not sure if the community is big enough for a crack flasher .
Hi,
I have a mint perfect Nexus One which I bought on release day. The phone has absolutely no physical blemishes and apart from it getting a little old in the tooth, it has been the perfect phone for me.
It was a phone that never failed to impress me and any other people who wanted to compare it to their ***insert choice of mobile phone / operating software***
So many people decided to choose Android after using my Nexus One and that in itself is testament to how good this phone really was! And in a lot of instances, respectfully still is.
I now use the Galaxy Nexus and my wife uses the Nexus S.
My Nexus One is now on vacation... something it definitely has earned.

never ... or at least not so fast the sad thing is that after 2 years a proper sucessor still has to be found.. i hope for htc making the next nexus phone maybe we can have it all ... again
Hey guys!
I also love my Nexus one, it was a nicely balanced phone: it looked good, great build quality, had good specs and had all the things you'd need.
It was a little hard choosing a new phone to replace it. But like op I have the amoled thing So that narrowed down my choices alot. I personally feel that the nexus line is the line to get if using android, you get a long life support and overall the phones aren't too shabby.
That obviously left me with a galaxy nexus. I feel the only thing it can improve on Is the camera (it's not crap, just not omfgbbq quality, but it's very fast) and build quality (feels much better than the nexus s and previous galaxy). But I think a large phone with a metal body would be heavy. The curved, featureless front is very sexy though...
I'm overall very content with gnex
