How much do you use your XPlay as a phone? - Xperia Play General

A very well respected mobile computing market analyst, Tomi Ahonen, tweeted recently that young people send more than 100 SMS per day in average. I'd like to see how you people fare up.
In my case i'm quite flabbergasted, given that I use something like 10 minutes of voice calls per month, and i've sent like 3 or 4 SMS since May when I bought the phone. It's true that I'm sort of a recluse, but I still find that claim unbelievable.

I wil answer for you lol.. seems a quiet post..
i get 300mins unlimited texts and 3gb data on my tarrif with tmob uk.. i send on average about 200 texts per month but i think its because i know i can send as many as i want without paying a penny extra.. depending on there tarrif i think people would send less..
As for calls i very rarely go over 300 mins, i use most my mins phoning my family (250 miles away from where i live) which is why i usually use alot of minuites..
That info you provided does seem a heck of alot but the thing you goto bare in mind is.. kids nowadays are looking at phones as things to show off to there mates with, they use facebook and messenger and bberry messenger so are getting used to sending messages as a regular thing, so its not actually that suprising..
Plus they have no concept of cost, so they dont care how many they send.
But yea, it is actually quite shocking that people use 100 texts per day

I would understand it more if it were 100 Blackberry.Messenger messages. BBM is more like MSN, dynamic and instant... But SMS?

A 100 try almost 200/250on any given day lol

I'm constantly on my Xplay texting in between playing Tekken 3 or Final Fantasy 7. I'd say I average around 200 texts per day and about 20minutes worth of calls.

I average about 0-10 texts a day, depending if I get into a short conversation with somone. I have no idea how many minutes I use, prolly at most 50 a month or something. Usually I use the phone to check e-mails, google something, map somethig out, or to play of game of course.

Last month I sent over 6 thousand txts

More than I'd like to.
...most people just call me for annoying stuff or text me trying to figure out when they can use me to end their boredom. I'd rather be using my Xperia PLAY as anything but a phone lol.
It actually annoys the holy hell outta me when I'm really into a game and someone tries to rip me out of it with some damn 30minute conversation.

THIS
All I want to do is frag some people in MC2 and my girlfriend is like non stop with the texts about nothing.
As for me I do between 2500 and 3000 texts per month and around 200 minutes. The minutes is low because I use my home phone a lot and I hate talking on the phone so I do everything I can to get off the phone as fast as possible.
When my girlfriend calls that is sometimes a tough proposition to say the least.
EDIT: just wanted to add, being that its my only phone I did not and will not root it, etc as I need to be able to rely on it 100%. I have a rooted nook color if I want to tinker around.

0-5 texts per day
0-100 minutes of talk time per month
I only really use my mobile in emergencies or just for a quick chat with someone.
I doubt i will get another game phone, especially now i have a laptop.
Kinda wished i didnt buy it tbh. Its never worked correctly 100% and i never buy any games on it anymore.
Im also all emulated out and played every game i wanted to play.

this month i have sent+recieved 24sms
pay as you go accounts are horrendesly limited, but oh well.
I'll start using it more when im going to go out more But for that ,im going to ask my friends phone number,i totally became lazzzy with the pnumbers

me? maybe 500-800 SMS a day? and oh, only 500-minute calls monthly..

I have
* 10gig free 3g internet
* $49.99 to call
* 3000 free sms
For only $50 only God bless sweden.

this is a monthly subscription yes? that deal sounds crazy good @[email protected]

about 10 to 20 sms a day. 300-400 minutes of talk time each month. Playing games, too much time probably.

My plan is unlimited internet, 2000 voice, some txts i dont remember. The internet counter on three only shows 1gb maax which i used within a couple of weeks but they say they dont charge for over that anyway because of unlimited plan. Voice i use less than 200 min a month but i use up to 2 hours a day skype on three which is free on their network but and goes over voice connection. 20-60 texts a month i guess
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using Tapatalk

Same plan as the guy above ^^ (3 network). Maybe 20+ texts a day with 2+ hours of calls a day (due to work)

Looks like I'm old since I only send around 10-20 SMS a month and do around 150-200 minutes of phone calls. But I download ~5GB every month.

I send about 50-100 text messages a day and about 120 voice minutes a week. I dont use alot of data as i have WiFi at home and do most of my downloading there
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk

my texting varies a lot from day to day, but on average maybe 10 texts per day. Calling wise I use around 20 minutes per day, but even that varies. Today I spent over an hour on calls. I don't have a set number because I have unlimited everything plan on Verizon so I never check.

$0.15 incoming SMS charge for Telus?!

Hey Telus users,
I'm sure you all know about the recent addition of the 15 cent incoming SMS charge. I'd like to know if anyone has called Customer service to cancel?
Does this change give us the option to bail on our contract early (for free) because of a change in terms?
I wish they would open up Canada to use American providers.
Any thoughts?
Tough luck, they've already publicly stated that they will not be freeing anyone.
That said, they've been doing this for months already on many accounts. Best bet is to complain to customer service... they'll probably offer a free unlimited text message add-on.
If enough people complain... I think you'll see Bell/Telus back off and forget the whole stupid idea.

Does anyone have any good success stories calling telus and whining about your plan? My work buddy tells me he yelled because of the misleading lack of wifi in the Touch and got free data and a decent voice package for 30 bucks a month.
Who knows if that is true or not...

Bell has clearly stated (I can't speak for Telus - but I believe it is the same deal), that if you sub to ANY plan that includes text messaging, you will not be charged for these incoming messages. This charge was put in place for those that do not have any text messaging as part of their plan.

Yes, absolutely they will. However, for those who did not wish to incur the extra cost of a text messaging add-on or plan... there's nothing to do but complain.
Think about it this way. Let's say some fool friend of yours gets the bright idea to text you the first 10 books of the bible... not only is your phone going to sound like a busy highway, but it's also going to cost you some extra $$$. To prevent this, you have two choices: Turn off text messaging features, or subscribe to a package including text messages. Are you supposed to take responsibility for any unsolicited messages?
I've already experienced this situation. A short while ago, an idiot I know decided it would be funny to send my phone number to some crank-calling service online. I never did get the call, but I started getting spam text messages, at a rate of about 10 an hour. Telus started charging me $0.15ea from the very first one. After 2 weeks, I got the bill. Do the math.
Paying for incoming messages is not like paying for incoming phone calls. With a call you have a choice. You can choose not to answer, or hang up when you feel the call is too long. Caller ID is a low-cost feature on many plans that will help with this. With a text message, you do not have any option other than turning the feature off entirely. There's no way to weed out or prevent unwanted messages.
I've gotten over $100 worth of extras from them because I've complained about it... including the easiest one: free text messages added to my plan.

I've been paying for data ($15) and a $30 package. I've complained about the flaws with the Touch, misinformation from Telus service/sales/tech, this SMS issue, and more... IF you are willing to spend the time on the phone (mostly on hold), and make repeat calls, they'll slowly give more and more features. It all has to do with your complaining skills and the only way to improve them is to use them.
I've gotten:
-Free voicemail (for length of contract)
-1/2 price billing for six months (yet to be put in effect )
-The Touch Diamond as soon as it is available. No charge, no extended contract.
-Free TXT addon (for length of contract)
-Extra 50 daytime minutes twice, for 100. (for length of contract)
-100 Canadian Long Distance Minutes (for length of contract)
-Well over $100 in credits for incoming txt's, incorrect charges, etc.
I've only been a client for 8 months.

Yep, I have called Bell and complained about numerous things over the few years I've been with them. Let's put it this way, I get:
Call waiting, voice mail, unlimited Internet (including ALL data transfer), 3 way calling, calls between the 2 phones completely free anytime, unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6, 250 text messages and 250 daytime minutes.
All this on TWO phones for $64.40 a month.
Trust me, I complained a bit. I don't know of anywhere else where you would get that kind of deal for two phones.

Incoming BS at $$$$
They just nickel and dime us. Then the rate goes up.
The entire system is digital.
What the heck then charge for call display?
Voice mail I can see, it takes up data space.
Text and voice can both be compressed. These monkeys are just ripping us off.
I am with bell and they screwed me hardcore but after a week of calling i got some some compensation for it. First i bought the htc 5800 phone as i loved the whole sliding qwerty keyboard. I asked for unlimited internet, unlimited text, msn, and then a basic voice plan as i barely talk on my phone. They told me they would have to add a minium of $25 for a data plan onto my $20 voice plan for the extra features that i asked for and i was fine with that as they told i would get what i requested. Everything was all dandy until i got my first bill $698.89. Apparently the 5800 doesnt support unlimited internet so i got nailed with data charges. No one told me this.
After calling bell for a week i was able to get a free htc touch, unlimited data, msn, text messaging, voicemail, free calling after 6pm and weekends, and free incoming calls for $60 a month. which is alot better than the close to $100 it would have costed me if i didnt complain that they screwed me over. It just makes u wonder how much money they get when they screw people over and they dont complain about it.

Start paying Bell Canada $60 to get unlimited internet on my Diamond.

Just had unilimited internet for a couple of days. It is sooooooooo cool to be online all the time!
This is so far I did:
1) Activated hotmail email and messager txt message alert. So I can response to my email right away.
2) Installed Google Maps Mobile. The live traffic information is pretty accurate and very useful.
What else is good to have for my unlimited Internet?
$60 per month :0? I pay around $9 per month in Sweden :0
ouch
Rogers is $30 for 6gigs, which is a hell of a lot on my Diamond.
With push mail, weather, google streets, and occaisional tethering, never even been over 1 gig.

Good to know. Maybe next month I can switch to $45 package for 500M.
$60 i am paying not just for the data though, it includes 400 minutes weekdays and unlimited weedend and nights.
i had the unlimited internet with bell for two months and found out it wasent worth it, i now use the 25MB package and pay a hell of a lot less than what it came up to. $75 - $85 depending on my calls. but hey! it was worth the feeling of not being charged anything for a years worth of usage in a month!

That's not bad at all.
What's the data portion of that? I thought Bell and Telus ere getting aggressive with the data rates?
All told my phone is about 120/month. But its a lot of options like unlimited incoming, 1000mins LD; voicemail to text, 400 weekday minutes; unlimited rogers to rogers, and 6gb data.
9€/month with 150MB traffic limit but unlimited time on most operators here in Portugal (optimus in my case).
MSN / Email checking use only a few kb's on communications, so if it wasn't for the battery drain, i would be online 24/7 with my TD1.
Btw, in my case, i have free voice, sms, mms and video calls to all optimus tags so it's great since like 50% of my contact list (and like 90% of my "common contacts") are tags... that means that I spent 0,00€ for each call (video, voice) or message (sms or mms)... 24/7... no limits

This is insane, ridiculous unbelievable.. Good luck to Stacey and her Family...
what she probably failed to realize is that the evo background syncs a whole lot. so while she may have only been on facebook for a couple of minutes, htc sense was on it all day. plus sense weather was collecting data for location and weather etc etc..
While I feel sympathy for how outrageous the bill is, she should have known international data roaming is $$$
When I was in Cancun last month, I was in airplane mode the entire time. What an idiot!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i want to feel sorry for her but her numbers dont eve match up she listed both 600 mb and 4.7 gb as how much data she used. 5 mintues of face book pushing emails background data from weather etc wont run either of those ina week. now if she was using qik or something to broadcast her vacation to the world for a few hours maybe.
while its easy to feel sorry for her and blame sprint the question is who is on the account? it sounds like it was a shared plan and that her parents had enabled international roaming and were told the charges when they did however they didnt tell their daughter.
with the discrepency in the amount of data used in her story, the fact she said she wasnt internationally set up but still thought to get on facebook and the fact sprint has confirmed the phone esn wasnt duplicated etc i tend to think she is giving a partial story, and is upset as anyone would be with the bill.
My guess she knew she was going to get charged but didnt realize exactly how much it would cost her and used it anyway. Then came home to a big bill and so downplays her usage to try to get it reduced and is upset as anyone would be with the extreme charges.
thats at least what i would bet the case is.
facebook sync loop for the loss!
Sorry, seems iffy to me. Only using FB 5 times a day and text messages? There is no way that is even close to that sort of data usage.
Screenshots or it didn't happen.
I don't really curse much but; That is a REALLY STUPID *****. I am sorry to say. After reading what happened from the orignal thread starter and the other posters in the sprint user forum, she is at fault because like a majority of consumers, she doesn't read the documents provided to her and expects the company to clean up the mess she started and made.
I really hate when consumers get away with things like this. They are purposely clueless too take advantage of companies. I am no company lobbyist, but I guess I should be dumb too if it will get me a freebie.

It's her fault and sprints. Sprint should have shut off service after $1k or 2k of charges and got verbal confirmation before restoring service. If they can protect themselves from users who abuse their service with large data usages then why not with excessive charges.

Same here, went on a cruise to the Bahamas and left the phone turned off. My buddy had his on airplane mode and just used it for taking pics. Whether or not the rates are correct, its pretty stupid to use the phone for anything other than emergencies when you're in another country. Even with international calling, I don't think that applies to data. I could be wrong though. Seriously, you couldn't stay off Facebook for a frickin week?!?

Because in one instance they would be limiting access to their equipment from heavy users who were previously promised "unlimited" service (if this was indeed the case with Sprint); but in the other instance they have no incentive to do so - they are simply counting money.
I agree, however, that it would be ethical to:
1. Put an end to ridiculous international roaming charges somehow
2. Provide adequate warning to customers where #1 is not possible (due to politics, etc.); if one can get a free text message when the monthly bill is due, there's no reason something like that can't be set up for roaming:
"Hey customer, as a courtesy notice, as of mm/dd/yyyy you have accumulated $X in roaming charges. You can turn off your phone, or keep using it according to your roaming agreement - link here."
where X can be 300, 500, 1000, etc. or several of the above.
Stupid.

Decided to use my ip hone instead of my evo last month in cancun. Even with all international features enabled, I still ran up a 1400 dollar bill . Was my fault I paid it. Just my experience.

Thought of different sprint plans

Just wondering if it ever came across anyone elses minds....
The family share 1500 minute plan is 129.99. Since we have the anytime mobile minutes free, how many people actually use all 1500 minutes? I dont even use 200 of those minutes. My wife and I use about 4000 of our anytime minutes..
Im thinking there should be a lower shared plan that cost less and has less minutes.
Any thoughts???
I have the same plan and have actually tried to get them to lower the mins/price with no success :-(
Sent from my BAD @$$ EVO using XDA app.
I agree they need more tiers for family plans ill on the same n me n my gf probably use less then 150 of those minutes.

Yeah I'm thinking get rid of the 3000 minute plan, which Im sure no one uses that many landline minutes, and add a 700 shared minute plan for about 79 or 89.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I agree. I used 500 of my 1500 between 3 lines, the majority being used by my father in law. He even has pick 3 and seems to find a way to use 500 anytime minutes.
I'm in the same boat- my wife and I never come anywhere near using the 1500 minutes in our plan, wish there was something smaller.....
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Of course...any mobile basically = anytime minutes for us. Who realistically calls a land line to chat anymore? It is only for calling businesses or taking care of other issues. These calls probably don't last more than 30 minutes a month.
I wish they would come out with a lower family plan. Between my wife and I we NEVER use close to 500 min a month. Nobody uses a landline, mobile to mobile is free. We have the 1500 plan, after all the insurance and tax, and add ons our bill is around $190 a month.

High data contract deals on the One (UK)

Hey all, yes I have searched through the various threads and used search but not finding very much posted about this anywhere so please don't all jump on me at once for creating another contracts thread...I want one specifically for high data users that will be buying or already own the 'One'.
I specifically use a fairly large amount of data, Usually around the 2.5gb mark each month. Sometimes bordering on 3gb....
Anyone else use this sort of data? If so who have you got a contract with?
Or if I'm the only one that has such a large data usage, how the hell do you all keep yours so low? I use wifi at home as well so in the mornings and evenings and most of the weekends I'm using that rather than my mobile data. But still somehow using lots of data (and no I'm not tethering. Have done once, but it's not regularly part of my usage)
So yeh, basically. Any tips on good deals with high data, low calls and texts, or tips on how to keep data usage down??
And although this could have been posted as a question, I would assume that there are other high data users that will be interested in the info posted here.

There are only three options for contracts for high (>1GB) data users. The best choice is the One plan from Three which gives you truly unlimited data including tethering and generally has good coverage IMHO. You can get a HTC One on the One Plan for £36/month on a 24 month plan.
The other option is the Full Monty plan from T-Mobile. Also a relatively expensive option vs. the very cheap Orange 1GB deals on dial-a-phone for example but it does give you unlimited data. I think is also £36/month but with £70 up front.
Alternatively you could get a 3 or 5 GB 4G plan from EE but that is the most expensive option and not unlimited but does give you high usage options and is 4G. (3GB is £46/month and 5GB £51/month)

Alternatively you could get a 3 or 5 GB 4G plan from EE but that is the most expensive option and not unlimited but does give you high usage options and is 4G. (3GB is £46/month and 5GB £51/month)

I think T-Mobiles 'Unlimited' data is in-fact really quite limited. Something like 1.5gb data I think, but I could be wrong

Where did you get this deal? And was it an upgrade?
Just out of interest, I've added a poll because I would really be interested in knowing what the data plans people have bought their one with......It seems not many have super high usage so I'd like to see what the rough figures were so far.....Are heavy users really as rare as they seem?
anything less than 1GB seems odd

You never know. Lots of people I know use about 500 so maybe I'm just a madman for using almost 3gb lol.

I decided to buy the handset SIM-free and then put a GiffGaff SIM in it. For £12 a month I get 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data, and I can cancel that any time I like, even just a single day before my next payment is taken.
Virgin has some quite good SIM-only deals too; if you don't mind being limited to 300 free texts a month, you can get unlimited data for £10 a month top-up.
My thinking was that, right now, I really don't want to get locked into a long contract because it's not at all clear what the different providers' 4G services are going to be like.

I tried GiffGaff for a while last year but found they do very heavy image compression on their network which makes using the internet and any apps with images really really ugly with pixellated images. There was no way to turn this off. I don't know if this has since changed though.
one of 3's All you can eat plans all the way due to free upgrade to 4G at no extra cost when launched in the Summer
Yes 3 do definitely the best all you can eat packages. But its annoying how they know you don't really have any other option hence they.don't bend on price at all!

I am in the same boat . I use anywhere from 6GB to 9GB per month as I haven't got BB so do everything on my mobile lol. It seems we are just limited to 3 atm?

24 Month Contract?
Upgrade?
Fee upfront for phone?
I spent over 9 years on 3 paying for their premium contract (and a data allowance I never came near to scratching.)
Eventually though their CS got to be beyond a joke. Their refusal to offer even a free phone to keep me on their One plan and total inability to hire anyone to man the call centers that could actually speak English drove me away.
I have since been blown away by the difference on Orange. My 3 contract is still in it's final days and that phone manages an astounding 225Kb/s compared to the 19.7Mb/s I get on Orange (both phones show H data connection although the Orange connection spends a lot of time trying to actually hang onto 3G instead.)
Read into this what you wish but it will take wild horses to drag me back to 3.

Hey I just wanted to chime in here with a bit of info I came across via a friend. Staples do a weird membership plan thing that might interest some people. I've been looking in to it and it seems interesting but I'm not sure if it's really for me as the monthly cost seems to stand above average as far as I can see. They also don't have availability of the One yet but have told me that it should be coming to them soon.
Essentially you are not tied in to a contract and can swap your phone at any time, change you plan at any time or leave at any time and all you have to do is give 30 days notice. They claim that should you wish to leave you would only have to return the phone. No buyouts or extra costs unless you wanted to buy the phone from them which you could do should you wish to. Also you can essentially build your own package to suit your needs and choose any network except for 3 to have the selected package on. And should yo go over your allowance there are NO charges...Though on talking to him he said they gave you a 20% buffer to go over and if you kept going over they'd be in touch and saying to tweak your package a bit, but of course again this can be done at any time. Essentially it's a totally fixed price per month with no nasty surprises.
The guy also claimed that there were other membership benefits such as up to 6p off a litre of fuel every time you fill up and insurance discounts etc...But again I'm not sure how much these pro's outweigh the costs...And of course it's only up to 6p off so for the next 2 years it could only be 1p off per litre....You see what I'm saying anyway...
So obviously as he couldn't accurately quote on the One because he didn't have it yet I asked for some quotes on similar priced phones (I shant name them as this post is about the One, I just did what I needed to to get a picture of potential costs)
For a membership plan with
250 mins
500 mins
2GB Data
Approximately £60 a month
If you lose some data and go for 1GB it drops a bit to £50ish
I looked at 2 plans specifically for me which were
250 mins
250 texts
2gb data or 5gb data
and the quotes were £52 and £58
You also have to pay the first 3 months upfront, though should you wish to leave after a month you get 2 months back of course.
So you see they're much much more expensive then you're average contract but then again for that price you can get a new phone every single month should you wish....I dunno. I'm still haggling with him so I'll let you know how I get on. But it's work looking in to really, especially for people who use a lot of data at times as the odd month you use more and maybe go over you wont be hammered for it.
Anyway here's a link to the site should anyone want to check it out/enquire.....http://www.staples.co.uk/connect_home_subsite
You can buy a lot of coffee for £60 a month and you can rinse a lot of free wi-fi while you're at it.
Trust me, blagging free wi-fi is easier and cheaper than an expensive data plan.

This is true....The only real benefit I can see by going this route is being able to potentially have an iPhone one month then maybe try out the S4 then go back to the One, then try out the new Nexus 5 when it comes....etc etc...I mean it would be cool to have the flexibility but it's such a lot of money....I have emailed back this morning stating that if I was to keep the phone for the full 2 years I would end up paying approximately £600 more over the course of 2 years compared to the highest data contract available on the phone! Which is MENTAL considering the phone is available to buy sim free for less then £500 atm! And that's not taking in to account depreciation etc....So anyway I'll see what he comes back with and let everyone know....
Oh and I also asked if the monthly cost includes insurance or anything, which of course would make it almost seem a bit more worth the price, but it's still high....
I came from Vodafone to 3 as they don't offer unlimited data.
Its 12.90 a month (rolling contract) 200 mins, either 1000 or unlimited text (can't remember) and unlimited data. The difference was phenomenal compared to Vodafone.
I think it matters where you live really. I can drive round most of Bristol and beyond streaming Di radio to my stereo (aux) with hardly any buffering. I can also watch catchup TV almost anywhere.
I have no issues with calls either.
Why not try it, if you don't get on after a month just cancel it.
