[ROM] CWM + Root Acer A500 7.006.03 COM GEN1 - Acer Iconia A500

Googling and surfing around the 'net, I found this repository.
http://code.google.com/p/acer-a500/downloads/list
The latest filelist shows:
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part1.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part2.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part3.rar
CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1.part4.rar
Is anyone skilled/game/aware/silly enough to flash this or maybe you already know what this is?
I am hoping beyond hope it is a ROOTED 3.2 w/ CWM or at least rootABLE?
If this is your repository and too many downloads might hurt your web space, let me know and I'll mirror it for the masses.

- setup no change bootloader & CWM recovery
- root
That's all. no more touch.

if someone can do it, it will be really fantastic...

You just need this rooted with CWM and leave the bootloader alone?

Yeah I guess what's the difference...I am still new to rooted android...would be great if u can guide me / educate me..... the main reason I need this is because Skype won't allow video chat on the 3.2 acer rooted Rom I have downloaded from xda development forum... Thank u for ur help

I downloaded the ROM. It looks stock except what it says.
It has been rooted (su and superuser.apk have been placed in /system/bin/ and /system/app/ respectively)
The locked bootloader has been removed (bootloader.blob has been removed and the updater-script updated)
The recovery flash has been removed (meaning you will retain CWM after flash)
It also appears to have a stock boot.img (kernel) so you shouldn't have any trouble with Skype.
There is a thanks button for the posts that are helpful (the OP's post for instance)
That should give you some knowledge!

so its basically a rooted stock rom with CWM am i right? and is it odexed?

Once you know the file name (posted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1181833 ) it's easy to work out the direct Google link.
So is the radio.img gotta be ripped out still?

@applefanboylol,
If you have RA, or Clockwork installed, it will not work because if you attempt to boot into recovery(because you replaced the boot.img file with a different recovery system other than stock) the bootloader will take you to the alternate recovery. You will have to remove RA, or Clockwork. To answer your question the update overwrites the existing kernel with a different one.

Do not flash Netarchy nor any other kernel until Android 2.3.5 kernel version is released. I'm sure Netarchy will release 2.3.5 kernel version once the source code is released for public.
Does this update remove root/CWM recovery? It's easy enough to get back, but I'm just double checking before I do anything stupid.
not sure why but the directions state to hold power and vol up after you boot into recovery before the exclamation mark and it just refuses to give me the option to select my update.zip......... blllaahhhhh
edit:: Ok so you have to hit Power first then hold it down when you hit vol up.. That worked perfect for me.

anyone have a backup copy of 4.010.11?

So I don't remember what build I originally had, didn't backup my ROM bcus im a nub, made a mistake editing a file in system/lib which caused my tablet not to boot past the android screen. Came to this forum for some help, kjy2010 came to my rescue. provided me with a full build of 4.010.40 GEN1, placed update.zip in external SD, booted into recovery mode & let it do its thing. worked like a charm & fixed my issue, but then someone said I should have a US build, can anyone tell me why? if so.. anyone have a copy of 4.010.11 they can provide me with & how I would go about to install it. Is it the same concept as done before? Really the main thing is, will I have issues downloading new updates? if I don't switch to 4.010.11.. or will I have an issue regardless bcus I don't have the original ROM.. & if so.. how am I going to be able to work around it in the future.

Market....get Acery Recovery Installer. After you install it, go into the app and have it install Clockwork recovery mod, miking sure you click yes when it asks you to backup your recover image.
Here is the thread on CWM, although you no longer need to push to install thanks to Acer recovery installer:

Mainly the differences are in the software you get with the tablet and certain underlying factors in the settings, like what channels are allowed in wifi....especially wifi n which allows a greater variety of channels, bands, etc. The world around uses different channels based on government regulations/standards.
I suspect this is why a number of people have issues with connecting to Wifi. They get ROMS from XDA, update their U.S tablets with foreign ROMS and vice versa and then have wifi issues.
You technically don't HAVE to be on a U.S version if you're in the U.S, but for the reasons above, I wouldn't ever recommend using a foreign ROM.

I'm in US, same build as you are, no wifi issues, the GPS.conf is set to north America, and IMHO it's more stable and fluid than the current US build. Just my opinion, and. 02c

Full (not OTA) Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2

No one seems to show GEN2 any love. Its all GEN1 and CUS7. For those that want GEN2 (I live in US), well here you are. A full image for Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2. This is not edited in any way. (This means not rooted). This is probably not going to be useful to the average person. For a modified (but rooted) ROM of this, look here
This is not OTA and can be used without ClockWorkMod (CWM) or any modifications of any kind.
Unzip Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.zip and place update.zip on the root of your SD card.
I should also mention this is Honeycomb 3.2 for those that don't keep track of the build numbers (and who can blame you?), and this DOES have a locked bootloader. But, nevertheless, and valid source for flashing and other things!

Hi. I have a question....is it rooted? I would hate to update it and lose root. Thanks. Excuse the question, Im fairly new to the Acer scene (1 week).

This is not rooted, it is also bootloader locked. I do not recommend this for you. Try another rom that is 3.2, there are plenty now!
Ty, been waiting for a GEN2 to add to my collection.
Thanks for the heads up. Im running Honeyvillain 1.2 but Im curious about the GEN2, as Im in the US as well. I dont know what the differences are, but so far its working smooth, smoother than any other ROM out there.

Yea I wouldn't worry 2 much about GEN2. If you have a choice, get GEN2. Otherwise it doesnt matter. The differences are mostly system files related to keyboards and databases and such from what I have dissected.
Like spelling color as colour and other oddities.
That and different bloatware, not all the same as the US

Vache has a downgrade image to Acer_A501_1.309.02_COM_GEN1 that will work with the new locked bootloader. Root that image then install CWM THEN install a custom rom. That will prevent the boot verification issue!

That problem can be solved by adding the line "ro.carrier=wifi-only" in the buildprop (you can do this with es file explorer or root explorer) and reboot.

I live in the us and while I have rooted my a500 I haven't installed a custom rom yet because the few stock roms are gen1. I want to stay as close to stock as possible and would love to have this 7.006.01_com_gen2 with just root and and bootloader fixed. I thought your "clean" rom might work for me but I'd prefer to have just the stock rom with few modifications. Any idea where I might find something like that?

Since I'm a newbie at this stuff, just wanted to ask if rooting my Note would erase the data stored in my phone memory?
Also, should i make a backup of all the data incase anything goes bad??
P.S - thanks for the tutorial..
Rooting, doesn't erase anything.
But yes it is always advisable to keep backup of your important data, though you may have limited option to backup on unrooted device. some suggestion
Contact - inbuilt import/export or google sync
Msgs - use SMS restore backup appl
Applications - Non root version of My backup application. though you can backup only app not data of appl like game level, credential etc.
Haha
Classic Music Dr...
Thanks for the suggestions.
One last query. Is it necessary to flash another ROM after rooting the phone? If so, could you please suggest me an easy to use ROM and a tutorial on how to flash it would be really helpful!
P.S - I apologize for being such a newbie but this is the first Android phone I'm using!

In short - No.
No need to flash another ROM once rooted although it's preference. You can happily root your stock ROM and maintain root access which will allow you greater control and of course the ability to run Root only apps.
If you wanted to try out other ROM's, check out the development section, Most ROM's have a video or step by step walkthrough on how to install..
No need to apologise, and if you've not used it already - here's a great thread that should answer a lot of your questions;

Flash custom rom
Hi,
I followed the steps given in the video and was able to root successfully.
Now, Can i directly flash the custom ROMs (for eg. ICS Stunner 1.6.26 which is an ICS ROM) through CWM?
I read a warning that said flashing custom ROMs on ICS kernels can lead to a hard brick and that we need to flash a safe kernel like Abyss Kernel.
Here is a screenshot of my About Phone.

Odds are you were on 3.1 when you unboxed but it doesn't matter. The easiest way to root the tab is to use ODIN to flash ClockworkMod Recovery, put the root .zip on the SD card and then flash the root .zip form CWM. Feel free to let me know if you need help!
The standard GT10.1 root zip installs an old version of Superuser that doesn't jive well with ICS. The solution is using Superuser 3.1.3-ARM from the Superuser site, but I have seen so many people struggle with this that I think I might take it upon myself to take the current flashable zip and just create a new one specifically for ICS by replacing the apk. I don't think anyone would mind, would they? There's no rule against doing so as far as I know.
I think I will ask a couple of q's about it and then put that together for everyone if it's cool.

Supercool. I've tried a lot of ways to root Stock ROM ICS, and most methods just make it worse (scrolling recovery, scrolling wake-up screen, etc.), so if you have a fail-safe method, via Odin, or noob-friendly Odin-free (my pref), be my guest, and I will misuse a secondary one for testing that (my wife's, if I survive the wrath)...
You've got my support!

I agree, rolling anything sucks. But I'm...just another noob. *snicker*
What I'm offering is to take that Galaxy_Tab_Root.zip and repackage the flashable zip with the newer Superuser apk...it won't fix the rolling recovery or rolling wakeup of an ICS rom - there's lots of content on this forum that teaches folks how to get around that. I do agree it would be helpful to newcomers to be pointed in the direction of the right solutions so that is something I'd do.
Speaking of the wife's device - I feel you there too.....took me almost 2 months to convince the lady to let me touch it and I just rooted it when she wasn't looking.
You could try this for rooting http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...gn=Feed:+xda-developers/ShsH+(xda-developers)
Swyped from my finger to your face, on my Samsung Galaxy Note.

The OP says it's confirmed working on the GT-P7510, but it was just in a response to a thanks post by someone using a 7510. They never said whether it worked or not. I tried it and it failed on my GT-P7510. I didn't try but once though. YMMV
BTW-It did not do any harm at all trying. It just didn't work.
OK guys, here you go:
ICS Root Zip
Here's what I did
1) Cracked open the Superuser flashable zip and the old root zip
2) Swapped in the new update-binary from the Superuser flashable zip and merged updater-scripts so newer su binary file and Superuser.apk are installed - really not that much different from the Superuser flashable honestly
3) zipped it all back up
All of the credits in the original update script and proper credits for su binary/Superuser.apk added to script - I take credit for nothing other than swapping updated files into the old zip package.
NOTE: This particular package is NOT TESTED!!! I am at work and already have a rooted tab so haven't got the environment to test it right now. However, in all honesty, the changes are pretty minor so it should work just fine. If any of you are on stock firmware, give it a go if you choose but don't flame me if it doesn't work. TAKE A BACKUP WITH YOUR RECOVERY FIRST! THAT IS ALREADY A RULE!
Hope this works and saves folks a step trying to root ICS.
EDIT: If someone can confirm that this works I'll probably just add the same link to the existing HOWTO thread for rooting this device. People are already looking there first for direction so we'll make it nice and easy to find.
help please

thank you for your response and offeing to help i would'nt mind if your way works as i dont want to brick it as its only a week old so if you can point me in the right direction to get the files i need and maybe a guide to follow that would be appreciaped thanks .
Head into the Android Development section and check the stickies at the top of the forum. There are wonderful guides there that will point you to the correct recovery.
Make sure you save this ZIP file I re-packaged to the root of your tablet before you start...saves you some time when you actually start the process. You can simply reboot into your newly flashed recovery and then flash the zip file. Let me know if it works for you!! Again, I didn't really change it at all, just tiny changes to the updater script and updated files.
Hi billy...How did things go? Were you able to get rooted?
