Hello everyone, my name is Cody and I just joined this forum today. I dumped my iPhone 3Gs and got me the ATT band Nexus One. I love it and I have done a lot of research regarding rooting this phone. I have never rooted a phone before and this is my first android device! I made up my mind (after spending hours and hours researching) to root my N1. The advantages are great and after using my N1 for a week and really getting to know my phone I want to get into flashing ROMS etc.
This leads me to my request. I am sorry if I am in the wrong place, but I was wondering if someone that has experience in rooting (preferably with the ATT Nexus One, if that even matters) the N1 would take a bit and maybe shadow me in the process. I know that is a lot to ask and again I am sorry. I just want to make sure I do this right and that I am doing everything that I need to do. I have read that it can take a few hours so I have all the time in the world this morning. I don't know what would be easier but I have a blackberry lying around that I could call someone or if that would be weird I am open to suggestions. I don't need someone to hold my hand through the process just be there if I have any questions. I am open to all kinds of help (email, PM, chat, etc)
I have a Macbook (early 2008 edition, if that even matters) My nexus one is is Firmware version: 2.1 -update1 (you probably knew that), Baseband version: 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2, Build Number: EPE54B, Kernal Version 2.6.29-01117-g4bc62c2 android-build apa26 #1.
I dont know if you need this info but I have read that you need to flash the radio to the right version so I was writing this to see if I have the right one. I would like to do this without messing with the radio (I dont really feel like bricking this gorgeous piece of machine) I do know that I should never remove the battery. If I am missing anything please let me know I am very patient and want to do this right. I havent downloaded the things that I need just yet but I can do that. If someone would maybe let me know the latest Cyan Mod. (Oh I should of mentioned for now I would just like to root and flash the newest stable Cyan)
I know this is a lot to ask and again I am really sorry (especially if this is in the wrong area to post this) Even if you don't have the time to shadow (I dont blame ya) I would appreciate any info that you have the time to spare. Thanks again guys and I look forward to meeting you all!

I'd wait until you have a reason for doing so...
At least you have the latest Radio and won't have to mess with that... just read up the posts with directions to unlock the bootloader and go from there.
I have done some research and would love to unlock the extra RAM as well as run custom ROMS (I would like to try out the Desire ROM for sense)
You pretty much seem to be capable of rooting. Do you have the guides for rooting. They work on att nexus so it doesn't make a difference. The latest cyan is 5.0.5.3 I believe, and can be download from his website. However If you go to the developing forums you can click on his rom by Cyanogen, And not any others that say his name. You will then see a download link in the post. But for now just do the whole rooting process. It should take you under 30 minutes. Its very easy. Just go for it. Don't worry about bricks. Hasn't happened yet. But if anything pm me your Gmail if You wished to get more detailed help. Im typing from my phone so can't get into much detail for now. Sorry.
Edit: The roms however such as Cyan already unlock the extra ram.

Great, thanks for the info that is one of the questions I had that was unanswered even though I have done a lot of research. Is there any good beginner (mac) walkthrus on this site? I am searching right now, but just thought I would ask. Thanks again for your help.

google is your friend.... you're going to run into things that everyone else assumes/knows and you'll want to be able to find answers rather than waiting on someone else to answer a blog post.
One quick thing before I get started (again, thanks for all you guys for helping me) I am going to be doing this on my macbook running Snow leopard version 10.6.3 is there going to be any problems I am going to run into? Do I need to download any drivers on top of the three programs I am to download (ie. Amon recovery image, google apps, and of cyanogen). I just want to make sure I am getting all this correct before I start
i got the over under at 3 days on this guy posting something along the lines of "You bastards bricked my phone, FIX IT!"
angermeans - you will find that users of this forum are not very tolerant of requests such as yours when the information you seek is easily available on this forum.
Really - don't be afraid, read up, follow the tutorials exactly, and you will have yourself a nicely customized phone in no time.
Or a very expensive paperweight. Kidding...

Dude, you can do it yourself. It isn't all that difficult. Moreover, there are so many guides available in this forum. Just search it and you'd be good to root your device yourself....
Ok so I got the phone rooted and unlocked and I have downloaded the latest Cyanogen ROM. I am using a Mac and from what I can see I have to put the downloaded (Latest Cyan mod and google features) on the root. I do that and when I hit flash zip from sdcard I get the error E:No zip files found.
Could this be because my mac is auto unzipping the .zip?

No need to unzip, after you download the .zip files just open finder, find them and then drag them over to your SD card.
whoops, didnt read the last message. obsolete!
I just want to say that I owe you guys a big thank you for all your help today. I went in a newbie and came out five hours later still a newbie but with a rooted nexus one with the latest cyanogen mod build. I am really sorry that I posted this in the wrong place and I am so glad that there are good people that tolerated my "newbiness" I learned a lot today and I am very happy with my decision. This was the first time that I have ever rooted a phone and I can say that I know quite a bit more than I did before. I look forward to spending a lot more time on this forum so one day I may help others out the way you guys have helped me.
Signed a very happy Nexus One owner.
Ok so I'm new to customizing Android. I had a droid Eris but i never did anything other than changing launchers and such, now i have the Droid 2 Global (in white ) and im feelin up for customizing it.
Just to give some history on myself i had an HTC Touch Pro and did alot of romming and stuff on it so im not a total noob. However, android is quite different from WM from what ive gathered.
So here's what i get... I've got it rooted using the z4root program and i have bootstrap recovery for it. From my understanding, to rom an android device you go to this custom recovery and (after savin a rom's .zip file to your sdcard) you flash the zip to the phone, bam new rom. (QUESTION 1) Now is there anything else i need to know about flashing a rom, like anything else i should do other than just flash the zip. i keep hearing things about wipe this and that and nandroid backups and such but dont fully understand all that so help there would be appreciated.
Now to more device specific questions (QUESTION 2) i keep hearing the term "sbf". from what i've gathered it has something to do with the stock rom (right?) and for the D2G we dont have this yet (also right?) and if i want to play it safe for now as i am indeed a newbie to this, i should wait until there is a D2G sbf to flash a custom rom just in case something goes wrong i can go back to it(also also right?)
(QUESTION 3) Also, i see a few roms floating around in the D2 forums, but only one (Droid 2 Global Stock, deodexed, busybox blah blah) actually says its for the D2G. Should i stray away from flashing any of the others because they might brick/not work with my phone? Also what does "deodexed" and "busybox" and terms like that mean? Are there similar terms i should familiarize myself with?
If you had the patience to read all that, i thank you. If you have the kindness to answer any or all of my questions, i thank you again! Any help you guys got is much appreciated
Short answer. No roms are available for the D2G as yet. I know someone who tried the fission rom with success but had a few bugs with it. For now, root works so you can remove all the junk motorola included(well I like them).
SBF is said to enable you to return your phone back to factory if it's messed up or I guess brick. Without this file, no devs are willing to brick their $500+ device right now.
And so the wait continues.
*Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong..
alright, that makes sense, i wouldnt want to either lol. you say you can remove junk by being rooted...how so? all ive been able to do rooted that i couldnt do unrooted is wireless tether and adblock lol.

Hi, my phone now is working and all ( the is it bricked post) Thanks guys
Here is the new problem...I would like to go to 2.2.1 ( the passimg.zip is 2.2) is there a way to update without unlocking bootloader.
I tried Androot and superoneclick....Androot gives me the Fugu message and SuperOneClick says its Rooted...but when I go to rom manager or other apps that need superuser...
I get this message : An error occured while attemting to run privileged commands!
So basically Root isn't working.
Also, when trying to install Cyan cm6...Rom manager reboots...but I get the Triangle with the exclamation point with the green man next to it...
Is it still possible to have my cake and eat it? ( locked phone, with root access so I can install modded roms)
Again...can someone help me with this
Thanks!
You didn't have to make a duplicate post. I already answered one of your questions in the other thread.
Dont make another post next time...
I rooted FRG83D with superoneclick root, But if its not working for ya you will have to unlock the bootloader via fastboot. Then push a custom recovery. With the recovery you can install the su binaries.
Manual root:

Ok i'll only answer here now for this question:
I don't want to loose my warranty. Hence the softroot way.
I thought of something dunno if its possible:
is there a stock FRG83 image like the FRG33 I just installed....maybe 2.2.1 will be compatible with androot or superoneclick
Thanks
You need to do a few things before you go any further. There are key steps you are leaving out that are just a recipe for disaster. I'll detail them below, in the specific order you should follow them. There shall be no deviation from this list.
1 - Put your phone down. Seriously, stop messing with it. Just quit.
2 - Read the Wiki that you've been linked to, in both threads, several times.
2a - Now that you've read the Wiki, really read the Wiki. Yeah, you skimmed it the first time, I know you did.
2b - Now go read it again. I'm sure you'll notice something new this time.
2c - Now go read the links in the Wiki. Explore those threads.
2d - Those threads that the Wiki links to? They have links in them. Go read those.
3 - Rinse and repeat all steps from 2a to 2d for, oh, about 4 days. During this time you are allowed:
To post general chit chat on the forum. No technical stuff, no help threads, no questions. Just read. If you have questions, you need to read some more.
No more than 3 app installs per day, from the market. Thou shalt not download and install any APKs from any source that is not the Android Market.
To tweak settings on your phone, provided those settings are all done via the touchscreen on your phone. You shall forget the acronym "ADB".
Once you've done that, you'll root your phone in no time, and you won't be worried that you've bricked it. Then, and only then, can you start asking questions.
Why? Because all of your questions right now are answered. You're jumping the gun, and it's obvious you haven't done much research at all. Seriously, go read.
I hate to be mean, but if you want to understand stuff, you need to try and understand it on your own first. You're here looking for solutions (that are already spelled out) to problems that you created (because you didn't read anything). Quit looking for the easy way out. If you want to enjoy your phone and the features of what you're trying to accomplish...put some work in yourself, and stop expecting everyone else to fix everything and spell it out. People here are more than happy to help, but you gotta start helping yourself.
@Soberguy: Thumbs up to you. Couldn't have said it any better.

Thanks, mate. Didn't mean to quote the guy above me, just noticed I did that. Fixed it.
I'm amazed at the patience some folks have. Maybe it was my rough 3 day weekend that's left me a bit short... Appreciate the thanks, all the same.
Ok, I do go a bit fast.
I'll read...it just that I tried the cm7 mod ( i know its experimental) and the phone
would'nt boot.
With the help of the great people on the board, I got my phone working again but on FRG33 (2.2)
My last question was if it was possible ( or someone knows of because Ive checked the net) to root without unlocking ( androot and superoneclick that i know of) if I have FRG33 ( Because Ive been getting permission errors)
Finally, I wanted to know if a FRG83 stock image was available so that I could recover to it without unlocking bootloader. (or any other stock that lets me root without unlock)
I'll unlock the phone as a last option...I'm sorry...And if anyone is pissed at my posts ...well sorry I just taught some of you experts could help.

See? Looking for the easy way out again.
It's not about anyone being pissed or short on patience. Look at how frustrated you are with the situation. You're frustrated. Why? Cause you did it wrong. Why? Cause you didn't read enough first. Even after several suggestions, you still want it done, with help, right now, or you'll sulk about someone pissed and how no one held your hand through it.
Is it possible to do what you want? Absolutely! Pretty easy, too. But if you read and help yourself, you'll better understand how to update in the future, as well as how to root the future update. Or, you'll learn how to root what you have, and flash a pre-rooted stock ROM (yes, those are here as well).
So call me an ass, cool. You did in your mind, that's fine. But really, I'm trying to let you know what will help you the most, and that's having a better understanding of how to prevent a boot loop in the future, or at least how to fix it if it happens. Best of luck, man.

Here's the deal.
I did a one click root without unlocking the bootloader. Then I installed rom manager and flashed clockwork recovery. Then I did a backup ( both done in rom manager) then I went back into rom manager and installed cyanogenmod 7 and my nexus is now haxored gingerbread. Make sure you do a full wipe before flashing new roms and it'll always work.
I didn't update my radio, my hboot or anything like that. And it all just works and is dead simple. I would suggest trying z4root or universal androot and then downloading rom manager from the market.
How you managed to **** up something so simple is pretty funny dude.
I'm using an at&t band n1 with an smiled. Not the one with super LCD. I heard a rumor that the super LCD n1s have problems with certain mods. You might want to figure out what type of screen you have too.
The cyanogenmod wiki at cyanogenmod.com might help you too.

OP, you have to learn the hard way. Stop using "newbie" as an excuse.
I was also a "newbie" when I first got my Nexus One in February. Everything about android was new and alien to me. It actually took me a couple of months of lurking in xda and reading up on tutorials before I took the plunge to rooting my phone. And I did not bother anyone on that. I made sure I understood the steps and triple checked every move I made in following instructions even though I did not understand them.
I also was worried about warranty and actually did the manual way of rooting my phone without unlocking the bootloader using some method that involved cutting a piece of plastic from my battery. That was nerve wrecking and no where as simple as the superoneclick thingy you have now. Yet I survived and I did it on my own.
I must admit that you have to be a little bit confident in using computers and have some basic knowledge of typing commands in cmd. But everyone has to start from somewhere.
Seriously if it's too much trouble or too complicated, maybe staying stock or going Iphone is a more comfortable alternative.
I'm actually pretty good with computers...
Also, I have bricked 4 phones (the provider took them back) fooling around...
I could brought this one back ( they didnt check). But I want to learn...I'm pretty impulsif...Anyway so far
With FRG33 z4root works (read thanks)
Now I trying to flash clockwork...( when I download cyan 6 +google apps) it reboots but I get the triangle thingy...I click power volume up ( read that thanks) I get a blue menu...I kinda scared to click an option so I rebooted...I'm trying to use rom manager for updates because its really simple ...anyway
Thats it for tonight All of you guys are nice dudes and I'll learn and will try to help im my own way...I know I'm a newbie that likes short cuts (hell I read all day at my day job...lol) This is fun ( playing with male toys)
Thanks guys!
I just bought a used Motorola Atrix for a great price and was looking at some of the ways to root the device and everything I have seen makes me very nervous to try anything at the moment.
I have rooted several Nexus One and Nexus S phones and never had any issues but I have been reading that the bootloader and firmware on the Atrix is nothing like any of the devices I have done in the past.
I would love to root and flash a nice custom stable ROM because after being spoiled using CM7, the stock ROM is not going to cut it. Anyone know of a good root method I could use without the fear of bricking this lovely device? Or should I just wait for a better stable process to come down the pike? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So first your going to have to be on 1.26 to get a root. If you've already updated to 1.57 (the OTA update) then you need to flash back to 1.26. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you can root, retain that root, update to 1.57 (OTA Update), and get your root back. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
Then after you are done updating and getting your root back, you can install CWM (this is what the current roms are using to install), much better than adb. Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143
Then you can either use GladAtrix Rom or Gingerblur (this is what I'm currently running). Both of these will deodex your system, theme your atrix, and give you the option to install various mods/hacks. Check the dev forum to see which one you think you would rather have.
Got all that???
I know it seems like a lot, but if you read and follow the directions, it's pretty fool proof, despite all the noob questions and problems to the contrary. If you have any questions or problems, just ask.
Swiftks...you should take you're reply and post it in general as a basic how to for the atrix...

Ok. Im pretty new to the smartphone scene and I have very limited knowledge when it comes to this stuff.
I bought my Razr M in October of 2012. I love this phone has been an amazing piece of equipment for the last two years. Shortly after purchasing it, my friend talked me into rooting it and deleting a bunch of the factory firmeware/bloatware that i dont use (kinda wishing I didnt listen to him).
Ok, as everyone is well aware, the kitkat update became available this past may and , unfortunately, when my phone downloaded and tried to install it, it failed at 25%. Now everyday and every 12 hours since then, i get the update notice and everytime, it fails.
Just so anyone willing to help knows, my phone is rooted with a locked bootloader. The only thing I did was delete some bloatware.
PLEASE....Can someone please give me a step by step guide on what I need to do to install kitkat on my phone?
Use RSD_Lite to flash the current firmware.
Thank you very much for the response. I downloaded the most current version of RDS lite and also the current firmware. I've never used anything like RDL and I have to admit, I'm kinda nervous and I really dont want to fudge anything up when I do this. I was wondering if you could kinda give me a step by step guide to follow?
Again... I thank you for the help and I sincerly apologies for my ignorance.
