I have a Bell Atrix (unlocked, I'm using it with Rogers). It's on 2.3.4 and rooted.
My question is - because it's rooted can I still just follow instructions on here to unlock the bootloader? I'd like to do this so I can flash Roms. My fear is that because it's already Rooted, and most instructions on here are for root and unlock bootloader, it will brick the phone. I'm bricking at the possibility of bricking as if this phone goes down I'm screwed.
Thanks for any advice

Can you tell me where you've found the bl unlock instructions for the Bell Atrix? So far, all I found was for at&t, and reportedly somewhat risky for Bell... I'd be interested to unlock too, especially with cm7 in the works!

Hey guys I recently bought an atrix off craigslist. It's the bell version and is running GreyBlur and is rooted. How do I tell if the bootloader is unlocked or not? I tried flashing clockwork mod through adb and it kept saying failed to flash, so I became suspicious that the bootloader is locked, ( I previously though that since im running a ROM, the bootloader must be unlocked) Correct me if im wrong, thanks

Only has to be rooted, not unlocked to run a P-ROM which is what you have with GreyBlur. It's not an actual ROM.
oh I see, so most likely the bootloader is locked because it fails when trying to flash clock work mod. Is it safe to unlock the bootloader when running a P-Rom ? I was reading the forums about people bricking their devices by ota updates and SBF files, or do those things only happen once your bootloader is unlocked? Thanks
You got everything mixed up...

If bootloader is unlocked you should see "Unlocked" at the upper left corner at boot screen (the first one, with dual core logo).
You couldn't flash clockwordmod because it's not officially supported, you should use the ones provided at the dev forum (either for the locked or the unlocked bootloader)

P-ROMs has nothing to do with unlocking. P-ROM is just a heavily modified version of an official motoblur ROM.
About the bricking... well, there is always a chance of bricking if you don't know what you are doing and don't read instructions carefully till you understand everything. But if you follow everything as stated, most likely you won't brick.

ok guys
1) I unlocked my bootloader
2) Flashed Clockwork Mod
3) Placed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169409 on my sd card
4) tried to install zip using clockwork but it kept saying installation aborted
After that didnt work I tried using adb and moto-fastboot to flash the rom, it worked but now my phone is in boot loop. I tried deleting user data and tried reflashing the rom but still in bootloop. What is the next step I should do, I know i'm one wrong step away from a brick so I really want to be carefull.
Should I try flashing a different rom using moto fastboot? thanks
I have found a lot of information on the forums about updating to 2.3.4 and ending up with a hard brick and am getting a little scared about it. I do think most of the bricks have to do with unlocking the bootloader (at least that's what I understood from the forums).
I currently have a rooted Atrix running 4.1.83. I don't have any other mods installed and I haven't unlocked my bootloader. At this point I just want to update my phone to 4.5.91 and have it be rooted. I don't care about unlocking the bootloader at all.
Which method is best for me? Can I just install the OTA update thru the notification I'm getting on my phone? Or do I need to follow one of the complex processes listed on the forums here. Once again, I don't really need to unlock my bootloader. I just need to be rooted after I update.
Thanks in advance.
if you dont want the bootloader unlocked just OTA..

From what I've read ..no. You have to OTA from a clean state ..meaning ..no mods. You may soft brick. Hopefully someone will correct me if im wrong..

I was rooted with webtop mod on 1.83 (no Pudding), and there was no soft brick - the install wouldn't get past verification and never actually modified the system. Rebooting after the failure would bring me right back to the previous state.
I ended up flashing 1.83 SBF, upgrading OTA, rooting, then restoring user apps from Titanium.
YMMV.

It seems, so far anyway, that if you OTA you get a new bootloader that will hard brick you if you try to revert to a previous version. DO NOT flash any sbf files that have a locked bootloader if you OTA! If you start with 4_1.8.3, unlock your bl with pudding, and install a KennethPenn or similar non-OTA based 2.3.4, you keep the original bootloader and can flash back to Froyo.
I have not seen it spelled out this clearly, so I hope this helps someone looking to upgrade. I recommend sticking to non-OTA versions for now.
After OTA update, what happen???
I have my Atrix rooted, and have sideloading. After downloading update (OTA), & start to instal the update, this appear to my screen.
Is this what called "brick"? What should I do now? Flash it?

Could u be more specific, please? I try replace the batery (pull & put it back) & it run again, normaly, with the previous version.
Just want to know why, the file was corrupt or something. So I can prevent on my next try.
Sorry for my bad English. Thank anyway
Why on gods green earth would you ota update and eliminate the possibility of unlocking your bootloader? Just plain dumb if you ask me. Maybe at this point you see no purpose in it but I assure you that down the road you will wish you had not ran the ota. You don't have to worry about bricking your phone if the process is done correctly.

Ah so Im about to get xplay from ATT and have been searching and finding more questions than answers. First is, is the ATT 4G version not rooted yet? and can I unlock the boot loader using SE method? and after can I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201725 in order to have a rooted phone? I came from the X10 scene but just cant quite seem to be able to grasp XPLAY yet... Thanks...
I flashed my AT&T unit with the R800i 2.3.2 firmware, used Gingerbreak, then did the OTA update to 2.3.3. I lost the AT&T bloatware, but I'm rooted with a locked bootloader and can continue to get OTA updates.
Details here.

+1 on this. Would recommend this method to unlocking your bootloader, only because of the OTA updates. Good luck! ^_^
COOL... The thing is that I dont really care about the OTA updates since someone always manages to dump it and I would just reflash it to my phone. jdsemler would I be able to unlock boot loader? Should I do it after or before the process rooting process? Thanks in advance again...
SO... BUMP...
You must pay to have your bootloader unlock due to it being carrier locked. Search the forum for members who unlock remotely over the net. All that is required is a paperclip and some software that give you. After unlocking, you gain root access by flashing custom roms with root status unlocked (check rom before flashing though just in case there's no root). But remember not to update at all cause you'll brick it.

Hello Everyone,
I am a new Atrix owner who just received the phone with .91 installed.
Before I go to a custom ROM (CM7, ICS, etc), I always like to check out the factory ROM to see what its all about.
Obviously, AT&T is hounding me to upgrade to .141, which is something I would like to do just to see any changes/improvements.
If I upgrade to .141, I see there's a new way to root the phone (well, it looks new anyway) -- how about installing custom ROMs, am I still able to do that if I go to .141? I've been trying to read as much as I can. It appears there are issues with going to .141 if you have a unlocked bootloader, but that isn't me (yet!).
Thanks,
Chris
I would unlock the bootloader first then flash a fruitcake of the new update. The fruitcake will be the same as if you updated normally but you will maintain your unlocked bootloader and root without the risk of bricking your phone. That way if you don't like it you can switch to a custom ROM. As far as I'm aware you can't unlock the bootloafer once you update. I could be wrong about that though.

1. +1, it would make more sense to just flash a fruitcake
2. Yes, you can unlock the bootloader if you have updated to .141, but I have only read it working for people who had previously unlocked it.

Thanks to you both for responding -- I'm still trying to read up on the Atrix, so having this info really helps. I will go ahead and unlock/root with .91 and then do a Fruitcake upgrade (and then eventually do a real ROM! )
Thanks again guys for your replies. I really like the phone so far -- screen is just the right size, battery life is very nice (a huge plus), and its thin and light. Good stuff!

I was finally about to root my RAZR M after owning the phone about a year. My primary reason for rooting would be to uninstall all of the system bloat ware that came with it.
I've tried a few different ways to root, but it keeps failing. There was a new update installed a couple days before I tried rooting and I suspect this is the reason it won't work. Is this the case?
Is there a workaround for rooting RAZR M with the current update? If there is simply no way to do it, I would at least like to know if there's a way to remove pre-installed apps without root. Please help!!
Thanks in advance for your response.

I'm wondering if its possible to revert back to before the update.. my research so far has produced nothing so far

At the moment there is no way to root 98.30.1 without an unlocked bootloader. Reverting back to previous versions may brick your device.

I got a Razr M from a friend who had already updated to 98.30.1 and I'm stuck now with a locked BL and Unrooted ROM. No hope in sight? Then there's this ... http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...y-warranties-on-developer-devices-reinstated/
Maybe there is a silver lining in the horizon?
Really bums me out there's no root for the new update, I was waiting to root till I decided I was gonna keep this phone then the Sept update came and now I can't root. Very disappointed. Wonder if it'll ever get bl unlock?
Anyone considered this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541739 ?
