Before you start, read through the forums and LEARN before you attempt to flash any device.
I am not responsible for your bricked phone or the ignorance that may or may not have caused it based on the fact that you CHOSE to follow these steps.
Follow these steps carefully
1. Make sure fastboot is turned off and USB Debugging is on.
2. Download Terminal and Astro off the market. Download Visionary r14 here.
3. Temp root using Visionary, make sure "set system r/w after root' is checked before you root.
4. Download the necessary root.rar file from here onto your pc.
5. Place the files on your phones SD Card in the root directory
6. Open up terminal, type in "su" then press enter. Then without exiting type in "insmod /sdcard/wpx.ko" and press enter. If you got the proper message type in "dd if=/sdcard/hboot_dhd.nb0 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18". Do not exit terminal in this step at all.
7. If it works press the back button to exit terminal.
8. Run visionary again, should say you're already rooted.
9. Wait 5-15 seconds then pull the battery out.
10. Reboot then run Visionary again.
11. Pull the battery, wait about 2 minutes. Boot into recovery by holding both the power on and volumn down buttons until it comes off.
If it says S-OFF, you're rooted! Good job!
Both the videos below are based on visionary, if one method failed, the other will work for you.

Or... significantly fewer steps:
Consult this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200147
From S-OFF you may be able to flash the following unsigned PD15IMG.zip:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y2A16P54
Then you can boot your phone into Clockwork Recovery, and install the Superuser zip:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
Use this file: su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip
And there you go, since you already have S-OFF.... root!

Root Problem

Hello. Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section. But I've been trying to root the damned phone for 2 days. I got a problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
It's about this article. I have downloaded the SDK.zip for android and have extracted it into C;\AndroidSDK
I have also added the " ;C:\AndroidSDK\tools\ " thingie where it says.
I connect my HTC Magic, select mount for SD, then I'm going to Command Prompt and type adb devices. After that it says that adb is not recognizes as blah blah blah.
What am I doing wrong? I'm trying to install Android 2.1 and I can't root it. :<
When you open the command prompt, try typing "cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools" then run "adb devices".
Oh thanks! It now displays my device's serial number. After that I type fastboot devices
Then I download Amon_RA's recovery file but I don't know what to download from his link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
What's your fastboot information? Hold back+power to turn on the device and post EVERYTHING from there.

Do what DonJuan692006 tells in the next post :0)
You've got a perfected SPL so your not going to be able to just do the "fastboot flash recovery blah.zip" command. Your going to have to go a different route. Do steps 1-5 and 7. At step 5, your going to use this one: "adb push C:\roottools\6.35Radio\Recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard" since you have the 6.35 radio. You don't want to mess with your SPL until you get further guidance on here and do some extensive research on the benefits/risks involved. Pay very close attention to what he says.
Well, I created a goldcard and typed fastboot boot recovery-rom.img and it displays a list full of commands. Now what? 8D
The phone displays a list of commands or the command prompt does?
The command prompt does. Also, I have downloaded Cyanogen 6.1 stable( saw it both from the article and your sig ). Now I got to install it, right?
No, you've got to get a custom recovery installed first. You can use the goldcard to flash an engineering SPL so that you can do so from fastboot, but that's the dangerous way. The easy way to get CM 6.1 installed is to follow my suggestion from post #7.
The fastboot boot recovery-rom.img doesn't work. It says remote: not allow
Your killing me. No fastboot commands are going to work since you have a perfected SPL. Stop being hard headed and follow the guide I pointed you to. It'll take 10 minutes and you'll be rooted. Then we'll start getting CM 6.1 installed.
How do I copy the contents of RootTools? o.0 I can;t find it in ym SD card
You don't need to copy them, you just need to extract them to your computer.
Well, how do I find the RootTools folder? :O
Depends where you saved it to when you downloaded it. You have to download it from one of the links at the bottom of the first post in that guide.
Ok, I installed the app and now Im a super user. Now what?
Did you do steps 5 and 7 to get the custom recovery installed? If you know how to use Google talk, add me on there: [email protected]
Yes. I did 5 and 7. I'm at 8. System restarted.... it says: formatting cache:...

S=ON but still can't stock unroot

hi i recently rooted my mytouch4g but know i want it back to stock OFTB
s=on in hboot but the pd15img.zip said no image
i have repeat tons of time but nothing
root phone by:
visonary temp root then i did perm root gfree for s=off steps was
gfree moving files to data/local/ with root explorer
then i did the commands for gfree and s=off
now thats what i did for root s=off
CWM = 3.0.0.5
now am running ice glacier (newest)
i did the unroot Automated way to unroot your myTouch 4G (difficulty level 1) method by jjjackson56 and got s=on
1. To use this simply download the zip and extract the two items to the root of your sdcard (ones a folder and ones the PD15IMG)
2. Open terminal and type
su (press enter)
cd /sdcard/unroot (press enter)
sh unroot.sh (press enter
3. Let it work.
after it did its thing and try to reboot itself it couldn't said that reboot: no such tool
so i reboot myself to hboot by vol+power
but the phone doesn't flash hboot did not find it said no image and i have the pd15img in my sdcard root
can anybody help
Can you verify that your PD15IMG is named exactly "PD15IMG.zip" and not "PD15IMG.zip.zip" or something similar? If it is, possibly try a different sdcard if hboot still won't detect the file.
Yes the file name is correct no double zip and I trade with a different card didn't work
What error are you getting in hboot? Does it display the messages of searching for an image then that it can't find one, or what?
Be sure that the file is on the root of the card, and not in another folder.
Yes its on the root of my sdcard not in any folder just like glacier Rom am using right now and when it search in hoot it says no image to all 4 search
is it my hboot version is 86
ok i found the problem i know its noob
but for noobs make sure u make sure your sdcard is fat32 format
or it will not work THX BYE!

ehhh, I'm kinda lost my self but my advice would be to find a way to upgrade to 2.2.1 and do superoneclick root, then use rom manager. . .
(or "something that just came to mind": Download Terminal Emulator from Android Market.)
(and manually flash a custom recovery. . . If you do have root then "su" should work flawlessly)
(Take a look at my post " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428838 " and download the needed files to flash your recovery)

BTW, flashing recovery will only stick if s-off is shown or engineering ROM is installed (s-on in this case is fine). Don't waste your time with superoneclick. It will be more trouble than its worth if your going through different versions.
"I didnt had to do goldcard back then."
I have never had to do a goldcard. Barely even know what it is.
You can flash recovery from any version (again provided the phone has either s-off or an engineering ROM installed):
Download and install es file explorer from marketplace (or anything that can be used to install apps)
Download and install busybox from marketplace
Copy and install Univeral Androot to phone Link -> http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 (taken from Link -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807899 )
Install Universal Androot with es file explorer
RUN UNIVERSAL ANDROOT
It should be SET TO 1.5/1.6 already THEN
touch GO ROOT
Wait till its fully installed THEN
Install busybox by:
RUN BUSYBOX APP
Accept superuser request (If it doesn't appear reboot phone and try again OR busybox install will fail).
(Install of newest busybox version is OK)
INSTALL TO /system/bin is OK
TOUCH the X
TOUCH INSTALL
It should say successful
Download Android Dev kit
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Download JavaJDK -64bit is fine for 64bit OS
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
install JavaJDK THEN
install dev kit
RUN android sdk manager
install google drivers & platform tools. Unselect anything else that might be defaulted as selected.
Enable usb dev mode on phone and attach phone to PC
Run windows command prompt in admin mode
Type "CD C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
Type "adb devices" (Device check. The phone will show up if everything is properly working OR no device is listed if not. If no device is listed then phone drivers are not working correctly OR phone is not in USB dev mode OR not attached to PC)
[FILES NEEDED:
A. Download cm 4.2.15.1 and extract flash_image from /system/bin/ ||link ->
http://goo.gl/5NPE. (Taken from link ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=807899)
B. The recovery you will be using. I recommend Amon RA. Link -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492 || Download the version you need! (for my t-mobile mytouch 3G 32b I use "recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img. You have a 32a so for you it looks like you need the "recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img" BUT DOUBLE/TRIPLE CHECK THAT. Not my fault if that's the wrong one. ]
rename the recovery-RA-sapphire-*.img to recovery.img
Either copy flash files directly to SDcard OR
place files on hard drive at c:\
Type "adb push c:\flash_image /sdcard/"
Type "adb push c:\recovery.img /sdcard/"
THEN Type (after each line press enter. Example: type adb shell then press enter.)
adb shell
su (if recently rooted then... touch allow on phone)
mount -o remount, rw /system
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin
cd /system/bin
chmod 777 flash_image
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
(taken from Link -> http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-a-custom-recovery-to-an-android-phone-device/)
(May or may not need to CLICK OK TO INSTALL ON PHONE. Or was I seeing things?)
Finally, boot phone into and enjoy the new recovery
If you need to do it again, keep the programs installed and put the files in a directory so you have easy access and know they work. Its MUCH faster the 2nd+ time.
***If you mess up your phone while trying to do any of this, that's NOT my fault.

For Those who wish to take it one step further and achieve s-off revolutionary or unrevoked
I give credit to Captain_Throwback over at themikmik.com for this...
this process will format your phone I recommend running a program like titanium backup and syncing your contacts to google before you go any further
28.reboot your phone, and enable usb debugging
29. place these 2 files, unziped on the root of your sd card
http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5377&stc=1&d=1327588554

adb shell
you should get a dollar sign
Code:
su
you should now get a pound sign
Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
Code:
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
Code:
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
33.now set your phone to disk drive mode and place this zip on the root of your sd card (do not unzip)

34.rename the above file to PC36IMG
35. set your phone to charge only
36.at this step you have 2 options you can pull the battery of your phone and put it back in then hold volume down and pres power to enter the bootloader or you can go back to your command prompt and type the following:
Code:
exit
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
37.when your bootloader is done loading press volume up to flash the PC36IMG.zip
38 your phone will reboot the bootloader once durring this process, dont be alarmed just wait for it to finish, when done it will ask you to press power to restart the phone
39 when done remove the PC36IMG file from your sd card
40. congratulations you are now back to stock 2.2 froyo evo 4g
41. you may now root and get s-off using the Unrevoked method found here:

I suggest you check here on the MikMik. The great part is that you is that you achieve S-Off with Unrevoked, so you have a permanent S-Off compared to Revolutionary's!
Nice guide, but you should really encourage flashing of RA recovery instead of CWM. It's just way more reliable on the EVO 4G.
So will this work for the updated 2.3.5 android??

Anyone getting issues with HTCdev? I am getting Error Code: 173. Error Reason: Check Rule Fail with exception.
Its it still possible to brick with this root. Can't you only permanently brick when flashing radios? Can you do that if you have s-on?

Hanging on parse
I used
Unlocking EVO 4G via HTCDEV.mp4 on youtube.com via Thedoctadro
I'll try to keep this brief,
I too had spent many hours trying to find the most up to date and seemingly easiest way to begin rooting my hboot 2.18.
I had updated my phone and then read a post about how the evo has been exempt from the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
The video told me to download the htc supertools file. I did not use the tools specified in dev, but still followed the same procedure.
File found here on goo inside .me - htcsupertoolv3.rar
It was on a wiki site with all the listings for the supertools and I chose the latest one that was available.
It is unlocked but when it scans my pc36img, it hangs.
I've read about formatting the sd card and putting another pc36img on and then reinstalling but unsure as to where to find the right one. My phone is fully updated with current updates. Any help would be appreciated if there is any to give seeing as how early into development this process is.
Sidenote: I didn't use the software on the dev instructions because I wanted to follow to a T exactly the instructions in the video. Thanks again.

If you're unlocked using the HTCDev method, you should be using a custom recovery to flash updates, not the bootloader method. The bootloader method will only work if specific criteria are met, since your device is still "S-ON". Do you have a custom recovery (RA-supersonic, preferably) installed?
Re: Hangs on parse.
Thanks! The instructions were to unlock the hboot, and then after the reboot, flash a custom recovery but because it's hanging, I can't get into fastboot usb to flash the custom recovery. Hind sight, I should have waited till there was a full walk through with links to the files needed for the rooting process and only trusted these forums. About a year ago, I rooted an old evo I had through these forums and these are the only ones I will trust. Any help would be much appreciated.
I got thru this one. Ive rooted using the revolutionary method & done it this way. Good tutorial, helps out those who dont know how to root with this ota update.

If you can confirm your bootloader says you're unlocked, you can try removing whatever PC36IMG.zip file you have on your sd card, and put the one I'm attaching to this post there instead. It should get picked up by the bootloader. It's for RA-supersonic v2.3.
A big thanks again. Worked like a charm. Love this site.
yah, i updated the op today and added some more info
Oh perfect...this is my first time rooting my phone so im trying to take in all the information i can.
Worked like a charm, thanks a bunch!
Also, I had a bad NAND recently and was not able to update via Revolutionary. This worked.
A sort of simple ?
If I choose to only to do the unlock bootloader with custom recovery but leave it at s-on, I understand that there is a way that I can still flash rom's to the the Evo......however I want to know if I would still be able to use any streamlines apps anymore such as Boot Manager or Boot Loader? say if I still want to have like 5 different Rom's on my Sd card how can I switch between them?

[Q] rooting HTC magic april 2012??

hello all
after an entire day scouting the web I haven't found a single sound guide/howto for rooting my HTC Magic/sapphire 32b currently running android 2.2.1.
several guides I found either have faulty dowload links (likehttp://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting) for crucial files.
or in some cases the downloads, notably the ROM's, are not suited for my device (wrong CID/MID), and CID getter doesn't seem to work on a magic.
I'm growing desperate, I can't find the actual way to root a HTC Magic to this date. It's like everyone stopped caring for rooting older phones. (for the record, I also own a succesfully rooted and ROMmed Sensation). I would like to root my magic so I can run a custom cupcake ROM wich is nice silky smooth and fast.
can someone pls help this desperate man and provide me with a link to a up-to-date guide to root a HTC Magic? or tell me how to? I could either use fastboot method or ADB.
additional information

after a long search I think I managed to root the phone using the One-Click method.
only to find myself unable to install a recovery
I found a recovery image at CyanogMod: recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G-cyan.
But every method I try, it won't install on my device.
fastboot: can't find the image no matter where I place it
adb: can't find the device while plugged, and in custom recovery mode
terminal app: can't find the image, even when it's placed in the sdcard root with SU permission.
my last resort is to try the unlockr method, but I doubt if that will work since I can't find the Amon Ra's recovery image anywhere on the web.
can someone plz provide me with a comfirmed working guide for HTC Magic 32b Froyo build? please, it would be very much apreciated.

Steps 5, 7, 9 ONLY
found this guide earlier.
step 5: succes
step 7: no flash_image in de ls list, continued to step 9
step 9: tried this several times and I get different issues:
- I type the command (./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G.img) and nothing happens. so according to the guid I assume I'm all good. but when I reboot in bootloader I don't have an opt to enter recovery
- or when I enter the command, I get a bunch of memory error messages wich ends with the line "error writing recovery: no space left on device" while OS sais 266mb left internal memory.
any other method to flash a recovery on this device?

Bootloader does not have option to load into recovery.
You must enter by self. Turn phone off then turn on by pressing and holding Home + Power
At bottom line there must be text like 'Amon Ra 1.7.0 G recovery'. If you will see triangle with "!" - it is stock recovery and you need repeat step 9
In case when there are some errors like 'no space' - you have to delete something in /system/app/ (try remove bloatware "Amazon MP3"). You need know syntax of "rm" linux-command
when entering recovery it only displays the custom recovery.
the device doesn't seem to contain any removable bloatware when I explore it using ES file explorer with root acces.
when I retry the flash sometimes it doesn't give any message, meaning it should be succesfull. but when I boot in recovery it's still custom. Either way I should have enough space, but the flash is still unsuccesfull.
I don't know how long the flash should take either..?
If you have custom recovery - your first step in mission is succeed
Now you need flash custom ROM via custom recovery.
1. Search for custom ROM (try ezGingerbread first) and place it to sdcard
2. Run into recovery
3. Wipe data / factory reset to delete old data
4. Choose and install custom ROM
5. When installation is completed - reboot phone (via menu)
6. Wait for 5-10 minutes at first start.
My apologies for the mistype, I ment stock recovery instead of custom .
But I managed to install a custom recovery through adb. I kept trying to flash untill it finally popped (custom) Android system recovery.
Since the ADB method doesn't display a progress notification or wheter the flash was succesfull, it's hard to keep track of the installation. I waited a good 10 mins before rebooting and that seems to be sufficient.
After that it was cake to install a ROM ofc. So consider this solved .
tnx for the help, I apreciate all the effort.
I still find it ackword though, that only the ADB method eventually worked. Fastboot and several apps didn't do the trick.
