I noticed that sometimes service "media " start saturating CPU and everything gets a lag again, until I kill it.
Is there a work around for this? What is this service?
This behavior is consistent between both Overcome and Tasks ROMs, which makes me think it is a honeycomb's thing. It is possible that it is also something that pershoot's kernel entails, as I mostly tested with it.
But I did setups to wipe all, data, cache, dalvik, and yet the issue persists.
Thanks in advance.

it is an android issue. been around for a while, altho seems to be quite bad in TW. rarely ever happened in 3.1 vanilla.
you can flash 'watch media', which will kill android.process.media automatically, if it gets out of hand.
you can find this on droidbasement or the dev section.
Thank you very much, sir.

I had this problem with stock KG9 firmware. After i updated to latest firmware the problem is gone.
I have the same issue. From what I can tell:
1. try just killing the process. It'll probably come back though soon.
2. go to "Manage applications" and "Clear data" on Media Storage. This will help but sooner or later, it seems to come back again.
3. there is a problem with one of your media files. Not sure if it is pics, vids, mp3s, ringtones... but some file is causing this problem. The hard part is finding which one is the culprit.
I too have this problem
battery drain seems to be higher with screen off but still OK but with screen on it drains alot... lost 9% in the past hour before I decided to kill it
sometimes I see "DRM protected" something, and then "Downloads" something and "Media" in OS Monitor
I did a factory wipe thinking there was something wrong... it was fine at first but got worst gradually

sorry if some of these questions have already been asked and answered. unfortunantely, my computer crashed due to a manufacturing flaw so I can only access google and this forum via my epic (which can be a pain sometimes). also, since heros threads are always deleted, I cannot ask these questions there. please, any feedback and help would greatly appreciated.
okay so I reflashed backed snack 1.6 w/ ultimate after testing some of the newest froyo builds. id rather wat until I get the official ota upgrade.
after reflashing 1.6 for some reason, android market doesn't appear to be installed. where can I download the application? I even tried reflashing 1.6 over itself but that didn't work.
also, I'm using the new gingerbread youtube but I signed in and now I get a constant fc when I try to open it. how can I fix this? if I can't, where can I download an earlier version of youtube?
another question. this time about battery. using 1.6 w/ ultimate, I get fairly decent battery. only problem is, my battery stats say that my display and standby are what is killing my battery the most. nothing ever runs in the background, every so often I unlock my phone to either check the time or texts or facebook real quick, brightness is on its lowest setting, silent mode, juicedefender running correctly (battery life: x1.56), no data running in the background, drm killed, battery calibrated and battery stats wiped, and everything else possible to to save battery.
and something I'm noticing now that the phone is charging, the battery is quite hot and I'm not even using the phone. it only overheats when its charging and I've also noticed that its only hot when I use certain roms/kernels. any insight on this issue? any way to monitor and regulate temperature?
once again, any help would be appreciated!

Ill take a stab at these. Reason for you market not showing, can't say? Did you wipe 3 times before flashing bs 1.6?
Also never sign in on gingerbread youtube on 2.1 build. I don't think anyone has got that working yet. Simply clear the cache for youtube and you should be set.
Lastly, I don't know what to say about your bettery.. what do you have setcpu running at? Do you have profiles to lower your phones speed when in standby? Couldn't hurt to give it a shot.
Sorry about your computer, all my info is based on personal experience don't really have a "dev" type answer for ya. But hope some of this helps.
Goodluck!

thank you for your reply.
yes I did wipe both data, cache, and davlik 3 times. I guess I will do that now and report back.
how would I go about clearing the cache for one specific app? I know I can do that when I open up my settings and go to app development but youtube doesn't show up in that list.
setpcu is oc at 1300 and uc at 200 conservative. profiles are as follows:
charging/full - 1000 and 200 conservative
battery < 15% - 800 and 400 conservative
screen off - 600 and 400 conservative
yeah, brand new computer too. all of a sudden it couldn't recognize the hard drive. and yes, most of my info is based on personal experience and creeping on forums.
edit: wiped everything 3 times and reflashed. market till not appear.

For youtube I just open it up without a data connection and step through the process of signing out only enabling data when needed.
If you're missing market then you need to flash back stock with odin then start fresh. Baked doesn't remove market at all. If anything it's the fastest responding market I've used.
Heat from the battery is usually caused by programs requesting cycles or data. Just restart the phone before bed after your initial battery calibration.

as I stated, I have no computer at the moment. so using odin to go back to stock is out of the question as of now. hopefully there's got to be another way without using odin. if not then I suppose I'm stuck in this predicament until I get my computer back from geek squad. and yes, I've never had a problem with heroes work before. but for some reason, this is happening.
and as I've stated before, no programs or data run in the background on my phone. after initial calibration I rebooted it. and after every boot, I toggle airplane mode on and then off. ill continue to moniter battery temps and see if the problem persists.

Sorry bout that, I did read over that you hadn't had a computer. I overlooked it though. It just sounds like you might have somehow of gotten a corrupt install somehow.
Maybe you can try reinstalling 1.6 over top of itself. I don't really see anything wrong with that, but as stated before though. Make sure you wipe cache and dalvichk 3 times each before you do so.

i900m - Bell Mobility running j4k 2.2. The phone has been ok till day 6 after upgrade to 2.2. I was using the phone, and it just randomly vibrated...though I hit something by accident, then 10 mins later...again.
Then i was using google maps, and it vibrates once, then 5 seconds later it vibrates 3 times quickly, and force closes google maps. I have been reading about force closes as being a sign of the 'end'...is there ANYTHING i can do to extend the life a little in case samsung comes out with a quick fix sometime soon? Please help...i'm paranoid now all the time
You can also try a factory reset/clear all caches and more (through recovery menu) and perhaps even flashing a new rom.
I've had problems with force closes after flashing roms as well at times, but these steps helped often (just be sure to backup apps and data because these steps will delete/remove them)
a forc close means problems?? i just bought like 1 week ago and have force closes everyday from launchers games and such.. does it mean my phone is defective?
Probably just a phone software corruption, perform a factor data reset then reflash with partition.. should clean/fix everything.
Clear the phone completly (full factory reset)
In dialer type *2767*3855#
If problems still persist, you will need to flash a new rom.

thats exactly what i'm afraid of: a factory reset.
From what i've been reading about the Bell internal sd issues is that a lot of people experienced the dead internal sd when they rebooted their phones (caught in endless loop)...i'm afraid of ever turning the thing off now!
If you don't turn it off it will eventually freeze.
Your screwed either way,
at least if you turn it off now you may have a chance of saving it.
Just backup all your apps, data and settings. I use Titanium Backup.

i've been experiencing a couple of vibrate and FC's lately, really mean its dying? or just a couple of FC's means the app crashed
Not entirely on topic but:
From my own experience, force closes really don't mean anything. In my mind, a FC is like a good old win 98 program crash, it just happens from time to time. I wouldn't read anything into it unless it starts happening on a regular basis to decent apps.
(And even then, spotify for ex. is notorious for FC-ing. It's annoying, but not something thats fixable)
programs that may help
I have a galaxy s2 too so far noprobs as i havent done much with it just rooted stock rom and making my mind with what rom to try but if you go in market and search for as previous reply titanium backup, superuser, rom manager and the best app for deleting apps root explorer. One of these programms come wit a fix permissions option may help.
I am currently running ViperROM(DK28) version 3.0.3. I followed all of the instructions for fixing GPS on 2.2 and then flashed to this ROM.
Whenever I remove the DRM services I notice 2 strange things that happen:
1. Quadrant is not able to complete, it gets stuck on the first test at the Video Decoding.
2. I'm unable to select a new ringtone notification in handcent, when I press OK for my selection it hangs and I have to FC it.
The reason I want to remove the DRM services is that it appears to negatively affect battery life. I notice an improvement when they are removed. If I restore the DRM services everything starts working good again.
Any ideas?
I wont flame you,but this has been discussed plenty, search please...Anyway,you cant remove any of the 3 without losing some funcionaliy. So the only thing you can do is disable the one that runs at boot, not uninstall.I have tried this tip that orked for a day, once you have a fresh rom installed, play some music, watch a ripped movie, change a ringtone and notification, then remove all 3 services with sdx app removal or any other method you like. But like I said this will not work for more then 2 days at most

You're not the only one running into this issue.
I ended up rooting my Epic to get rid of all the sprint bloatware and what-not. Everything seemed to be going smooth from the stock standpoint. I removed Samsung Media hub first. Rebooted the phone and noticed nothing bad. Played around with the setup like that for a few days with no problems.
I next got rid of both the DRM service .apk's that were still running even after I got rid of the media hub... and then the problems started. For the first couple days I noticed DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED battery life and EXTRAORDINARY performance so I imagined what I did was a good thing: WRONG! A few days later, I noticed that if I assigned a sound to a notification or a ringtone *from the SD card*, that it would not work. I couldn't play sounds anymore and instead whenever I went to adjust the volume with said notes/tones selected, the Sound_service would crash.
However, I'm the only person I knew before now who has reported this issue so I'm sure there's not a lot of hubob to fix it. Every Epic is built different. Same parts or not. It's a mass-manufactured phone and each one will have its own quirks. There's my 2 cents.
I just froze the apps when I rooted with Titanium Backup but I thought I did something wrong and figured out that sound from apps seems to trigger the software crashes. No point if fixing it now. Flash DI18 and get the EC05 update and/or get EB13.

So can anyone confirm that the EC05 fixes the DRM issue? Otherwise there's no point in upgrading. I saw the release thread on here. Hecka people already having problems with the EC05. To upgrade for the Sprint ID packs? Won't see me do it...
Just let it do its thing. The amount of functonality you lose removing it is not worth the minute amount of battery life you'll save.

I have to disagree about the amount of battery life I'm saving being minute. When I had this damned DRM service running, I maybe got 10-12 hours with moderate usage. Without it running and now with SRF1.0.2 running (gets rid of IQ), plus SetCPU to (clocking 200-400 when screen off, undervolting 1.0-1.2 during usage) I'm getting a good 20 hours with heavy usage or I can go 2 days without charging if I only use texting.
I do actually remember getting a good bit more battery from deleting the DRM but at the end of the day I'd rather have my music files and apps work properly. I'm used to keeping a charger on me, its just the nature of owning a smart phone.
Yeah I'm with you on that one. Hopefully this will be one challenge [ACS] will be up to digging into.
I just tried stopping it in the running services menu and tested it on a few things with no issues. Doesn't take more than 15 seconds. I'll probably start incorporating it in to my TWS/Airplane mode routine (which just happens to need around 15 seconds supposedly) whenever I reboot.
That's what alot of other people have been saying too. I guess that's what I have to do.
Some threads on SDX about this say you can use some killers to stop it at bootup (personally I've always hated killers since Android 2.0, you don't need them anymore). As long as the .apk and .odex's are there. It's only when you uninstall or freeze it that you start to run into problems 1-3 days down the line.
I use Startup Auditor and it only kills it briefly. I've read all the arguments against Task Killer but I'm still a fan of it. Its especially useful to see what programs start up on their own and I do notice better performance after killing the ones that have no business being open. For everything else I just set it to ignore them.
I keep getting random lockups, at least more than once a day, and sometimes several reboots in a row.
It appears that i can happen almost any time, whether it be at a lock screen, while titanium is asking for root, or opening twitter or facebook, even the gmail app. It simply freezes, and requires me to long press the off button and reboot.
Unfortunately, i can't get adb via usb to work on the nook, so i can't get a reliable logcat.
Is this common? I have had two nook devices so far, tranferred the rom over through nandroid and have had lock ups on both, I am flashing regular cm7 nightlies now (emmc), but it occured using phiremod too.
Help?
I never had one, maybe I'm lucky
Have you tried fixing permissions in clockwork?
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
I am having the same problem. I loaded CM7 to my emmc yesterday and I have had it freeze on me a couple of times now. All have been random. I do have performance set to 1.1 and on demand gov set.
So I can just go to ROM manager to fix permissions? Hopefully that works.
EDIT**
Did not work. Was fine, then I uninstalled market updates, connected to wifi, opened the old market, searched for flash and it froze up. Any ideas?
EDIT 2**
uninstalled beautiful widgets (read that somewhere), so far no lockups (fingers crossed).
i had mine lock-up twice last night
i was in dolphinHD and i had just installed swype beta
i have only had 1 time that it has locked up before then in the last 1-2 months that i have had it.
im blaming swype, since i havent had the problem in the past
perhaps not your problem, if you dont have it installed.
I get lockups pretty regularly. It's irritating. Not sure what the cause is. I thought overclocking had something to do with it but everyone else is overclocked and this problem doesn't seem to be common.
How low do you have the voltage settings in tweaks? Having a voltage just barely too low for your CPU can cause a lot of weirdness. Also, it could be any one of the stepping voltage settings, not necessarily either the min/max frequency.
Folks, playing with the voltage settings in nook tweeks is not for the average user. These settings can really bork your nook. That's why you get a warning when you open those settings.
That being said, I have been running cm7 on eMMC for months and have never had a lockup. I am overclocked to 1200 mHz but have left the voltages alone.(cm7.1 nightly 160).
If you are running on eMMC,try fix permissions first. If that does not help, start looking at the apps you are running to determine if one of them might be the problem. Several people have reported issues running beautiful widgets. There are other apps that can cause issues. If you have good backups of all your apps, try removing apps one at a time. In the process, you might learn something about your system.
Worst case, reinstall cm7, wipe data, cache, and dalvic cache. Start over with a clean system and add your apps (apps only, not apps+data) one at a time. This will ensure that a possibly currupt data set was not causing the issue.
The key to a fast, well functioning nook is to start slowly and ensure each change works well before moving on to the next step.
While it's true I have more time than most to play (retired), my nook can run circles around most competitors but only because I took the time to set it up right the first time and I am not afraid to wipe everything and start over.

I fixed permissions some time ago, seemed to help a bit, but i still get the odd lock up or two. I am running Swype and Beautiful widgets(anyone know a good alternative?)
I had been getting irritated by these these random locks up for a while. It seems that uninstalling beautiful widgets fixed the problem for me. I thought it might be that BW was trying to access the GPS, but it still locked up after disabling geo location in BW.

In case you're still interested, BeWeather is a great substitute for BW and FlexT9 in place of Swype.
Also, I had issues with lockups no matter my overclocking and formatting the eMMC and possibly reseating the SD card fixed it.
I've rebooted the Tab a few times, but in OS Monitor, the "Download" process is running all time time using at least 30% processor!
What's the deal; anyone know? I'm unrooted and running the latest Tw update.
Thanks!
Ended up being MediaServer running. I stopped in in Manage Applications->Running. I stopped it and my CPU went to normal levels. My home screen responses got alot better too.
I vaguely remember this issue on my Samsung Fascinate too.... MediaServer always got hung up on some type of sync'ing.
I'm having the same issue. So what is actually causing this? Any way to disable the mediaserver all together? It seems to keep re-starting itself eventually.
I haven't found a way. It doesn't affect battery life as far as I can see, but it lags my Netflix if its running because its already sapping up 50%+ CPU.
Yeah, I've noticed that the tab gets laggy when it's running, and it speeds up a lot when I kill it in OS Monitor. That's my main reason for wanting it closed. It doesn't seem to affect battery life while the screen is off, but when the screen is on (such as reading an ebook) it absolutely reduces battery life. I just tried freezing it in Titanium Backup but it resulted in all the gapps (such as Gmail) crashing and refusing to open after rebooting.
I also noticed that on some boots, it's DRM Protected Storage Content rather than Download Manager. I just froze that instead and haven't noticed any issues from it yet, but I won't know for sure until rebooting.
I'm having a very similar issue, though it's process.android.media that is causing the problems. I have to manually kill the Media Storage service several times per day. It's quite annoying.

This Media application is what calls the Download Manager service. Killing this app also kills the service that's using alot of CPU processing.
I've noticed that I get a lot of errors in logcat pertaining to the sdcard. They are usually right around the time that a media process starts up, but I have hundreds of them throughout the log:
E/Environment( 1250): getExternalStorageState/mnt/sdcard
E/Environment( 1695): getExternalStorageState/mnt/sdcard
See attached screenshot.
It appears something is wrong with reading the sdcard, and I'm guessing this is maybe causing the media process to hang eating all the cpu?
