Do we now if the camera will work in this official CM7??
If so, great news, I'd unlock my bootloader for sure!
What's the release date of the CM7-Version that supports our beloved Xperia devices? I guess it would be something like CM7 7.1.0RC2 or even 7.2.0!

Quoth Wikipedia:
CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for over forty cell phones and tablets based on the open-source Android operating system.
It offers features not found in the official Android-based firmwares of vendors of these devices, including native theming support (also known as the "T-Mobile Theme Engine"), a codec for the Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), compressed cache (compcache), a large APN list, an OpenVPN client, a reboot menu, support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering, toggles in the notification pull-down (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and many more), as well as other enhancements. CyanogenMod was also the first mobile OS to incorporate BFS as the task scheduler, a change that has been merged into experimental branches in the official Android source tree.
CyanogenMod claims to increase performance and reliability over official firmware releases.

So yeah, it offers a lot of features not included in official ROMs, and very useful ones indeed. But if you don't plan on using them / don't need to, I guess it's better to stay on stock? That's up to you to decide, after balancing out the pros and cons.
You should also keep in mind that you might void your warranty if you choose to install a custom ROM.
In my opinion, SE stock ROM is better than most other vendors', but CyanogenMod is the best.
Related
I noticed lately that the supported devices officially for cyanogenmod is getting bigger and bigger, so maybe one of you guys can talk to cyanogen bout joinin his team.. i remember from his website he had this to say recently:
"A lot of people ask me about adding support for their phone, but we can only support phones that we actually own. The CM team is always looking for new hackers to join up with us to add support for their favorite device. Get in touch with me if you’d like to help."
I know that there is roms pretty much quality and as up to date as an official cyanogenmod, but these roms are only limited by the website its on. unfortunately not everyone knows about xda (shocking thought, since im on here daily).
i hope the big devs for the eris reads this, for im sure its a good idea.....
Honestly the Roms that get handed out here are better than Cyanogen in that the people that make them implement their own tweaks inside the core of the rom that make them better. I personally WOULD use an official Cyanogen rom because who knows maybe its more stable and all, but still.
Since he already plays the role with his kernel and vendor tree, I vote for Canop
Canop for Cyanogenmod!

I vote Conap too! lol
I'm not really sure of much added benefit from "official" cm releases other than the ability to flash a nightly build every day. Most of the devs build their rom directly from cm source or port the nightles. With the way it is now you have a choice of many custom cm roms whereas some devices with "official" cm support only have the cm release.
Sent from my nonsensikal froyo
I've wondered about this too, but like others have said... We are probably better off the way it is now or at least not any worse off. The Hero builds are relatively easy to port and building from source has been worked out pretty well, so it doesn't really matter if we have an 'official' one.
+1 for Conap.

hello,
i posted it in the ICS update thread:
Hey, silly question, i know, think it would be asked many times.
i wanne opend a new thread at dev, but i cant't to less comments --_--
now, we know, we never get a 3.X kernel from moto, so, we must help us at our own, i asked me, how?
my idea was, what abei the LG P990, i heard, there are 3.x kernel, no officiel, i know.
What are the hardware differences at the LG and the atrix? fingerprint and camera, i know, but what about the rest?
it it identicly? is it possible, that we can work with it? at beginning, without camera and fingerprint?
perhaps we found an other device with an identicly camera and 3.x kernel, perhaps we can look in a direction like that? only moto bashing wont help anyway
Click to collapse
i hope any dev get give informations to me?
the developers already know that moto left us behind..
they're talking about it and what they are going to do??..just the time will tell us...we have to wait hehe
I'm not a developer but sometimes i asked then about start the work from some other similar device's kernel (same that you're suggesting here)..they told that it's an idea but should be necessary a massive rewriting...so it's not easy and they will need time even if the device is similar..
thats the point, i think we don't have any other chance, similar devices kernel, or from scratch, the second is the option which needs more time, i think
i wanne call me a developer, nothing in comparsion with our big ones but i would like to help your devs and i think, i'm not the only one, but i don't know how - i know that is many work and needs massive rewriting, but it's our only option.
i only hope some devs would found together and can say, how we, the, i wanne call it "non-kernel-hackers" , can help.

Anyway, i think that our best chances is to raise a found, by donating, and offer it as a bounty for the first dev to create a 3.x kernel for our device. We might find someone that way. Create that kernel takes lots of time and skills. Very very few people are willing to invest all the time required for free.

I too have sent Hashcode a message asking for possible assistance. I told him we would be willing to donate to the cause.
If you can organise a decent fund/development device, I'd recommend contacting TripNRaVeR. He has experience porting the vanilla 3.1.10 Tegra kernel code to a new device (the One X, which shipped with 2.6.39) hence he's probably already halfway there with knowing where to go next. It looks like LG and Sammy have ditched DVFS in their 3.1.10 releases on the Galaxy R and O2X, which would be nice (using standard governors )

im also very interested as to which phones will be supported...but not only that but how easy will it be to get your device supported...im over in Asia and there aren't variants that aren't well supported by the major custom rom developers like AOKP, CM, Panandroid....which makes it really hard and sucks to get in on the "open source" goodness...i hope Omni is easy to bring to a large selection of phones...

If you can get AOSP to run on your device, you should be able to get Omni to run. Currently, a device tree needs nothing significant beyond an AOSP tree (I think about 3 lines of changes to make an AOSP tree work in Omni). This means work on porting Omni is helpful to those wanting AOSP as well.

I usually just port Custom Rom's to devices. Not really port I guess, just have to change the device tree. Do a little bit of kernel stuff to.
I don't consider myself a dev, but I will be getting one of these, once the "Sand" version is available.
I am wondering how much more difficult everything is going to be between Lollipop/SELinux and 64-bit capability.
This will be my first Nexus device as well - closest I've had up to now is running GPE on my M8.

I don't consider myself a dev, but I will be getting one of these, once the "Sand" version is available.
I am wondering how much more difficult everything is going to be between Lollipop/SELinux and 64-bit capability.

The bootloader will be unlocked so much will be possible. If you've never had a nexus device you're in for a treat!

Well I thought I'd jump in here and say that this is the device that I'm getting to learn the basis of Java. So I guess I'm like a future dev?

aren't we all
Im the same as you
time to learn how to hack a kernel
I'm seriously thinking of buying one of these with the "1.7GHz octa-core Cortex-A7 CPU; 2 GB of RAM" version.
I'm not real happy and the operating system but I have read that lollipop has been installed and there are instruction for doing so.
However it did not state which version it was installed on?
Will it work on all versions?
Thanks...

The only one I saw was Android 5.0 for Mi 2/2S at the Miui site.
Where did you see one for the Note?

I am using this ONE
VANILA_XAN vs v2
It is 4.2.2, but it is better than using Miui

I have that feature but I did not notice it at the top of the page.
I like these roms better better
The obstacle against better ROM's is the lack of the kernel source.
This why developers here don't do much with Miui.
Don't see this changing, so just have to find ROM's elsewhere.

Maybe things will break loose before long because they are selling a lot of these devices.
BTW; Will these roms you pointed me to work on the version I'm interested in?

I have the Redmi Note 1W. It was sent to me by a friend in Malaysia.
Can only get 3G as it lacks the bands for LTE.
There is a newer version out for 4G/LTE.
Not sure if it has the bands necessary for the U.S. since it is sold in Asia
and Europe.
