Changes noticed in 2.3.5...add what you notice! - Galaxy S II General

Since there is a 2.3.5 leaked. There are lot of people asking for changes so Just wanted to make a thread keep to collective list.
Here is my take .....
Fonts are back to normal now. No more bold fonts.
Launcher now has circular scrolling on home screen n widget selection screen.
Sadly say bye bye to overscroll bounce and welcome bluish overscroll all over the place. Even in browser.
Better quadrant score almost 4000. For those who love benchmark.
Oveall faster than 2.3.4.
SIP support disabled.
No new GTalk. Sadly true.
Gallery UI is little change. There also you will see overacroll effect.
There is now noise reduction feature added when you call.
Reported by many users about Improved Sound Quality !!! . Its true !
When you set Vibration to Always, Icon remains in status bar even though ring volume is set !
Please post more you found on this firmware or upcoming leaks.
At the end we will get full change log... I will keep on updating main post.

Wow! Can you please explain how you're touching 4k in Quadrant?

By just running the benchmark at stock.

The stock kernel is the fastest one yet. It's quite noticeable that Samsung has made some improvements to this version.

Battery life seems.to Better too

One thing i noticed, on my phone is that the icon with vibrate is on even when not on soundless. haven´t seen this on my 2.3.3

Crazy things like that may be an indication that you need to do a wipe/reset or possibly a reflash.
Yesterday, after experiencing Dutch text popping up in my phone while set to US English, I reflashed a wipe version, and all is good.

Sound output quality through earphones is improved to my ears.

It really has. It's not just your imagination.

Maybe those changes have to do with Steve Kondik(Cyanogen) they hired. Just a possibility.

This might not be an error, if you go to settings - sound - vibration, what is that set to? If its set to "always" then its working correctly then and the icon should be there right?

Same thing here with the vibrate icon - it shows unless you turn vibration off completely in the sound settings. Guess this is a new 'feature' of 2.3.5

Same for me with vibrate. Its because vibrate is set to always in settings.
I've found that camera seems to have lost its sound. Which is a good thing!

I also noticed what seems to be a marked improvement in sound quality. I am listening to music in Poweramp with no equalizer on, and it seems to sound better than my zune HD. Before, I used to cringe at the sound quality with no equalizer on. Now, the soundstage seems much wider, and the highs aren't muffled anymore.
Or maybe this is all just a placebo effect from seeing people post about it.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Doubt it's placebo mate. I'm quite picky when it comes to sound and straight away I could tell the difference.

Sucks that Supercurio finished his review before he got a chance to play with KI3.
All kidding aside it does sound better, maybe anandtech's article made Samsung rethink the sound quality?

Maybe supercurios's work may help us to check if this ROM really has sound improvements.
(when source is available)

What exactly is the point of overscroll anyway, I mean when you get to the end of a page you know your at the end of the page right? Why the hell can't they just put a toggle somewhere in the settings to turn it off? I don't mind bounce but glow is hideous, it always looks banded.

My guess is blame Apple for patent action over the bounce. I think Samsung had no choice but change it.

[Q] Help with volume please?

So far, my MT4G is close to being the perfect phone but I'm just about to go back to my Blackberry 9700, why? Because I can't hear the damn thing!
So far, in the week I've owned it I've missed every call because I can't hear it ring (yes, I've tried different ring tones and the volume is set to max,) when I watch a YouTube video the volume is way too low, playing music w/o the earphones is just barely OK. I can hear a phone conversation OK but I'd like it a little louder.
I'll admit to being hearing impaired but I have no volume problems on any other phone I've used in the past (except Samsung all of those I've owned have given me equal problems) this is NOT an HTC problem, volume was fine on MT3G and HD2, it's only the MT4G that I can't hear.
Please help, this is the first phone I've had in years that's close to perfect for me if I could only hear it....
Please post questions in Q&A section.
Anybody? I'm really hoping I'll be able to keep this phone but I have to be able to hear it!

I too had a BB 9700 and the volume was fine. I started off with the same issue with the MT4G. I simply chose a ringtone that had better volume properties and all is fine now.
You said you've tried different ringtones. I actually extracted the ringtones off the BB 9700 and use one of them for my phone ringtone and it is plenty loud. Try that.
I use the Ringer_BBpro_2 ringtone.
I've attached the BB preloaded ringtones.
Thanks, I've found a ringtone that's a bit better, it's the T-Jingle! Wanna bet they did that on purpose?
Went to the T-Mo store today, tried another MT4G, it's volume is the same so it's apparently a problem with the phone? I like the phone so much I'm gonna learn to live with it!
There is an app in the market that boosts the volume for everything. but its only a 7 day trial. so its not free. it works, almost blew my eardrums out with the headphones. Some reason it breaks FM radio tho

Hey CBC I used that app before and can't remember what it's called now. But anyway that app only works for headphones. It's supposed to remove the volume limit when you're plugged in with your headset.
Won't affect ringer volume.
And I'm not using it anymore cause it didn't really have a significant difference.
I'll update when I remember what that app is called.

Don't know if that was meant for me but I have no problems with my volume. My sound is awesome. I make my own ringtones and they are plenty loud.
As far as the name of the app; I was only asking so that other members who are watching this thread would know instead of scratching their heads.

Thanks to all who responded.
I don't use the headphones so the app probably wouldn't help, certainly not with ringtones.
I have the phone set to "Pocket Mode."
I suppose I'll eventually learn to live with it, this AM I used the alarm clock feature and it woke me up so that part has enough volume.
Oh sorry about that. Thought i mentioned the app. Its what was said above volume unlock(er)

Nice. Hope it's crispier with loudness. Some apps can easily boost the volume while audio is distorted badly.
I believe SuperCurio anyway.
This should have been Samsung's job anyway. Shame on you Samsung!
Means i will have to turn my sound down .
jje
doubt higher volume levels will really improve the sound quality
personally i feel the s2 has enough volume headroom
its just the timbre is screwed up.sound needs more quality and cpu interference noise needs to be minimalised.(not audible wid cheap earphones but gets really irritating with my nuforce ne6 and friends tf10).
but then again guess something is better than no improvement at all.volume increase it is
a hearty thanx to supercurio and thanx to op for the heads-up
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
donations will be going to supercurio for this.
I hope this would solve the low volume on AOSP based roms
awesome!!!
Personally speaking my phone is loud enough as it is and ive no complaints but i understand some people might have some issues with their phones.
very interesting
Damn, you got to this one quick! I was just about to write up a thread for it. Well done
To those wondering, Supercurio has already stated that there's no distortion, unlike a lot of other so-called fixes (that really just rely on dodgy EQ-hacks). On average, you should see a 6dB+ volume increase.
Personally, I'm extremely excited to see how this stacks up against this, and also if they're related in how they achieve the volume increase (I know that the current fix uses the alsa_amixer file in /system/bin, but apparently it's not a very elegant solution, as it needs a service to constantly run in the background, and needs to push the command every ~300ms to maintain the boost).

I'm using that as its the only thing that works for me right now. It is pretty shabby, but afaik its the best for now.
It isn't very elegant, and the sound dips every time you change it (while its applied) and THEN the sound goes up, thus scaring you to death.

Nobody seems bothered by the display's sharpening artifacts? Amazing!

This is very obvious the first few hours using the phone. Horrible sharpening halos around texts most noticeable on gray and non white backgrounds. It kills the black contrast of the text as well making it look gray and not to mention a pain to read. You can spot it easily in browser forums here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2250376 and here: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/hardware-clinic-2/

I used to feel that aswell on my Acer GD245HQ when i was like 2 cm from it, then i got glasses and standed at a normal distance and they disapear
Supercurio is busy working his magic for the display a few of his tweets:
"with tuned sharpening, perceived sharpness can be nicely improved, sans visible artefacts"
"image processor from GS3 is from a newer generation than any existing devices, adding finer controls over useful parameters"
"settings are clearly over-cooked (not the first time and no preset is reasonable /accurate) it's perfect for Display Expert"
He's also addressing black crush etc...

i agree. unless it is norm to put your phone very near your eyes, use a magnifying lens or microscope when using your phone daily.
I just viewed the linked pages on my gs3 and I'm having a very hard time seeing what you're talking about. How does the text look remotely grey? And what halos? Text is sharp and easy to read even when zoomed out a fair bit. As you'd expect since it's a 300+ ppi screen.
Are you talking about the anti-aliasing? You don't want the font to be anti-aliased or something? Even in your magnified photo, I can't see what the problem is?

It isn't the anti alisaing. I increased the contrast a little to show the problem more clearly.
Notice the halos around the characters? Still dont know what is wrong? In browser tap menu, brightness and colors, select level 1 power saving. This makes the display color a little bluish but also eliminates the sharpening and makes the text much better looking as it should. Compare it to default and see if you notice a difference.

I think this is a legitimate issue. I can see the poor text rendering in all lighting conditions unlike complains about imperfect blacks that can only be seem in pitch dark conditions. Joking aside the poor whites are also an issue.

Android 4.2.2 Update - Impressions & Reviews!

Yup, finally it's out. Though Sony promised us the update 'soon' enough, it wasn't too late either. The forums will be all over active regarding the update and it's time for us to post the reviews and impressions of the update. The following topics (not limited to) can be discussed:
1. Screen
2. Battery
3. Launcher (Even smoother then .307 if available)
4. Any camera changes (Quality wise and speed)
5. Wi-Fi coverage and stability etc.
I have update mine using the Spain FTF without wiping data and I'll post my detailed review soon. Till then and always, this thread is all yours!
My quick first find: Only the status bar is transparent and the dock isn't. Does my eyes have the problem or what? (Updated: It's just a wallpaper problem, reset it and it's all done).
Second: Camera does take 3 secs on an average to initialize, but the consecutive ones becomes noticeably faster. (Lock-screen camera opens a bit faster either)
Third: A nice animation like the screen gently fading off when screen turns off!
Fourth: Wi-Fi is as worse as before!

Despite system that is only getting better and smoother, some considerations about UI:
1 - The union between the lower action bar with shortcut bar, have a slightly gap, and transparency of lower action bar and transparency with glass of shortcut it's not the same, doesn't fit.
The glass effect os shortcuts is really strange, could be much better.

}
2 - I really have to say something? It's really strange.
3 - this white color and size, including spaces between shortcuts, it's all just strange.
UI could be more (can't remember the world) "one color", i.e. If the "theme" is to be black, than uses all color "as black as possible", not include a white stripe somehow in the middle of the UI.
Camera improves are great, but in intelligent auto is changing too fast os modes, the camera find the type os picture that I want to take but in a blink it reads again a slightly move that I do and changes to another SCN, like soft skin (?).
Wi-Fi still worst than ever.
Battery is OK, not so much improves, and is consuming more in standby so, in other words, worst than last 4.1.2 (253).

The smoothness is back, not like previous leak .407 which not so smooth.
Thanks Sony remain .253 screen panel color tune. Current .423 firmware color tune is same awesome.
Thanks Sony for the nice look semi transparent status bar and notification bar.

Screen sharpening? Maybe it's just...

The freaking font. No seriously. The default LG font is way too thin and when displayed on a white surface is very uncomfortable to read.
I just installed Roboto font using iFont and I can no longer find any (noticeable) sharpening done on the phone.
This is not placebo. Try it yourself and be amazed! Maybe there's still a sharpening issue, somewhere. But switching the font has mostly cured it for me. Yay.

Tried it, it's still there. It won't show up on screenshots by the way, and it's most noticeable with black text on a grey background.

You're right. Still there. But bolder fonts make the sharpening effect a lot less annoying. I can finally use Press without poking my eyes out.
I can't wait for a fix to come out for this! As a photographer, I see a lot of beginner photographers over sharpening their pictures, giving the same effect. Now MY WHOLE PHONE DOES THIS CONSTANTLY. Just kills me.

Glad to see I'm not crazy and that people have the same issue with the phone's over-sharpening

We humans are capable of greatness.
Switched to Vector font (iFont). Much bolder, much better lol. Temp fix for now.

I can't either. I have 20/20 vision, maybe you need better eyes to see it, but I'm not complaining.

Haha maybe we just need it pointed out to notice it. I noticed a single damn dead pixel on my first G3
It depends on the screen to be honest sometimes I'm shielding my eyes other times like this post can't see it. I am wondering if there is some algorithm running and it adapts constantly.

Yeah it's definitely more noticeable when there's a grey background. Load this page up on your phone.
Also, once I got the effect to pop-in (not sure how, if I come across it again I'll definitely try to reproduce it) so it's gotta be some kind of processing unrelated to the display firmware.
Changing the font to Roboto Condensed using iFont completely solved the text sharpening issue. Even when the test of the screen has halo artifacts, the font looks fine.
As for icons and other issues with oversharpening, they too come and go for me. Sometimes the screen looks amazing, other times everything is super sharpened. I wonder if it has to do with throttling?
It's not everywhere. It'll show up in apps that have bad QHD support. I didn't have any of it in the vast majority of apps I was using, but then I ran into older apps and it suddenly appeared.

I don't notice it on that image. I notice most in the playstore.
