Rooted, now what? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, newbie with the NC. I just rooted my 1.2 NC and like it. Was wondering about updating the Android OS version. Can I update to a newer version of the Android OS without loosing the stock NC functions???

Nope, its either changing to a completely new rom or staying at rooted stock.

You might as well have updated to stock 1.3 before rooting--you'll just have to root again if you do upgrade.
You can't update the stock software beyond Froyo. I doubt B&N will ever take it up to Gingerbread, but it's not out of the question.
If you want Gingerbread, you can install CM7. You can keep stock while installing CM7 by
installing CM7 on a SD card or
setting up a dual boot on the NC's internal flash card (eMMC).
Either way it would be two different systems, stock and CM7.
Honeycomb is pretty much **** on the NC (NC doesn't have the hardware HC is designed for, and XDA's devs don't have the HC source code).

[Q] nook color rooted application not found

nook color is rooted. was working fine. one day i was going to use it and i noticed some applications icons were not showing. also when i look in the drawer a number of them are not shown either. when i click on the application it says application not found. what is wrong?
Rooted how? Stock ROM? CM7? If stock it may have received the 1.3 OTA update from B&N.
mm i used manualnooter 4.5.18 so i would be running on 1.2(i think thats right), is cm7 a good one to use? i mainly just wanted it to be rooted to be more tablet like, didn't really need all the customization. i tried the miui one, but its not that good on the nook. not to my liking anyways.
CM7 is great, though if you didn't like miui at all you may not like CM7 either. Sounds like you like the stock interface. In that case, keep it stock. You may have to re-root if you were somehow updated. Go into settings and see what version is on it now.
The 1.3 update is rootable too right. I same steps as 1.2 with the new manual nooter

Downgrade 3.2 to 3.0.1 AND root help

i dont want to have my hand held every step of the way so i will try to outline what i believe i need to do and hopefully someone can confirm and correct me.
here goes....
first use this method, apparently method 2 better, to downgrade...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
i then need to follow a process to either root it and leave it as 3.0.1 but rooted or install a custom rom that is rooted? if i need to install custom rom due to that instability mentioned in method 2 i could just put a stock but rooted 3.2 i believe. is there a list of rooted 3.2 roms that i can just install without playing around with kernels or whatever? which is the best currently?
thanks guys and please be gentle
I used the downgrade to 3.0.1, root that, install cwm by thor, then for now flashed Taboonay.
I too am looking for a Rom that fits me right. I'll report back if I find it.
<warning>**** I Void Warranties ****</warning>
cheers mate. idecided to use method 1 and it went without a hiccup. i then rooted.
for now i will leave it with stock 3.0.1 rooted as i am sure ice cream sandwich will be out in a short period and then i will look to put a rooted version of that on when it is known to be stable and someone has a good tutorial on it.
thanks for all the work that goes into the development of this great OS.
one of the reasons i wanted to root is to increase cpu speed.
when i just installed setcpu it wont allow me to go over 1000mhz which i presume is to do with the stock rom.
any suggestions? does this mean i will HAVE to install a custom rom, if so is there a list or any roms that are definitely better than others? if so, i guess there will be different procedures to install depending on the rom,?.
Not necessarily a custom rom, but a custom kernel. Some roms include kernels, some dont. Any you can install kernel wthout rom if you want.
I used method 2 and downgraded to 3.0.1. This version is very unstable as I got a force close message every 5-10 seconds. I immediately rooted using iconia root. (Iconia root and the rom that I was going to flash were already on my sd card prior to going through the process) Kekinash has a rooted stock rom here in the development section if that's what you want. I downloaded it, but I have not flashed it yet because I am happy with Thor's current 13.2 rom. There is a link to Thor's website in the general section. I won't post it here because of xda rules. I can't speak for any other roms in this section because I only ran rooted stock before the 3.2 update.
Lightspeed Rom is pretty snappy
cheers guys, went with honeyvillain.
only probs: first it says to insert a sim card, as i have a a500 it doesnt use a sim card, this is probably why 2 force closes come up straight away for system updater possibly?
second, the market kept saying there was an error. i uninstalled the market and found the latest market apk and all is fine so far running 1400mhz.

[Q] Revert To Stock?

The search function on the forums is down, so I apologize for not actually using that first.
I have a Nook Color, its rooted and running a bastardized CM7 (2.3.3)
I haven't used the nook in 6-9 months and I want to update and all that goodness.
Should I revert back to stock, upgrade the software (I've heard there has been a couple of updates) and then try to root?
Can I just re-flash CM7/CM9 to the tablet as it sits now?
Links or directions to appropriate locations would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Firstly, if your NC running CM7 since, then why you want to go back to stock ROM? B&N latest release for NC is v1.4.1, and it's still Froyo. If you want to go back with stock, I believe you can revert directly to 1.4.1 then root, note: I am not 100% sure if it will work. Members reported that they can reverse to 1.3 then update to 1.4.1 successfully.
Secondly, in case, you still want CM7, CM7.2 RC0 Kang build is the latest. CM9 (ICS) is under development and pretty slick so far. If you want CM7/CM9, just flash it again with CwMR 3.2.0.1

Thanks!. Sometimes I like to go back to completely stock and start from scratch just because its something to do. I didn't know if the flavors had changed that much. If the latest updates aren't going to do anything, I'll just keep it where its at and dump CM9 on there and rock the house.
Thanks for the reply. Its appreciated.

Once you revert to stock, you might enjoy triple booting, following this thread. If you follow Racks' directions, you'll be burning an image of both CM 7.2 Kang and ICS to an SD card. Then you can have the best of all worlds and boot into either. Or take out the SD card and boot into stock Nook Color.
Be sure and benchmark your SD card with CrystalDiskMark first. It seems that many SanDisk Class 2 and 4 cards are fast enough. Most Class 6 and Class 10 are not. See here for an explanation of how to bench your SD card and why the slower cards seem to work best. Note that you are testing small files of data: 50MB. I have found that some SanDisk cards are awful, but many 8GB ones seem to be ok. I presently have 2 that are going back to Radio Shack and Microcenter, though. I'm still looking for a fast 16GB one.
Running either CM 7.2 or ICS gives you a ROM that is much faster and smoother than stock NC.

I am planning on giving my nook to a friend and have reverted back to stock 1.0.1 and am triple booting from my sd. Everything is nice and smooth but i have two questions.
1. How can i make a clean (fresh) install so I am not logged into my google accounts. It says i have to reset to factory settings to remove it. can someone help me?
2. Can i upgrade to the latest and greatest version and still triple boot, or can I only do it from the early builds?

Is there a differences between the 2.2 and 2.3? non-kernel

What are the the major difference between 2.2 and 2.3, besides the kernel and other software stuff?
boot image, emmc, partition table, that kind of stuff.
Also why exactly do we need to downgrade via the official to switch the kernal? Does the official update make modifications to other stuff that CMW can't?

Major difference is one Android version up. The looks of the UI are completely different, but under the hood you won't notice too much difference.
Regarding kernels, you only need to change stock 2.2 to 2.3.5 and vice versa when you install ROMs based on .32 and .35 kernels respectively. Ics also needs official 2.3.5 installed first too. There's no way to install a .35 kernel based ROM over a .32 ROM, you'll have no network service.
The underline reasons are too technically for me but that's how it works
One last thing, if you plan to only use stock ROMs, keep the 2.2, the 2.3.5 betas are a pile of crap.

Thanks, but what I'm trying to find out is the under the hood stuff. I can get 2.3.5 working, and I can usually get 2.2 working. However I can't get 2.2 custom roms to boot, they all get stuck at the boot logo, and I'm trying to figure out what the problem is. 2.3.5 custom roms work, and 2.2 stock roms work, but 2.2 custom roms don't work.

Make sure you use correct cwm version. For .32 ROMs, you need cwm 5.0.2.6, for .35, you need 5.0.5.4. It has to do with changes in partition scheme between .3á and .35 ROMs, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the advice.
I was thinking along similar lines, but backwards. I had been using 5.0.2.6 and thought maybe I needed to switch to 5.0.5.4. Neither work. I've got a feeling it is partition scheme related. I just got done fixing my partitions after the "resize the internal sd" thing messed up at least my data and internal sd. Maybe I haven't fixed it completely.
I also found that installing .32 MIUI causes something to change in my data partition. Before installation, ubuntu sees my data partition (via pink screen) and can open it. After installation, ubuntu won't open the partition, saying I don't have permission, or something like that. After I double check it, I'll take the question over to the appropriate thread. Haven't checked other custom roms to see if they're doing the same thing. Maybe they all are and that is what is causing them to be stuck at boot.

I am WAY behind...

So, I gave my girlfriend my DInc last year when I got a new phone. Put a fresh install of CM7.1 on it and it's been running well since then. Well, I'm trying to breath some new life into it, but I've been completely out of touch with DInc ROMs for over a year now and I am lost.
What is the most stable ROM available for the DInc at this point? I'd like to put JB on the phone, but ICS would be fine.
Will I need to update the bootloader? Radio? Newest recovery?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm so far behind I am at a loss reading through everything in the development section. Any help is greatly appreciated.

1. ROM? Tiny's CM10 (formerly Pons's CM10) is arguably the best and most actively maintained, and even the latest CM10.1 (Android 4.2.1) is a very stable ROM. If you care about recording videos you're better off sticking with GB, otherwise, JB is as stable as ICS. Evervolv JB also is a good Android 4.2 ROM.
2. Radio? The latest radio (2.15.10.12.20) seems to be the preferred one, cmlusco has a thread about it on here somewhere.
3. Bootloader? HBOOT 1.07 is the latest, and if you unlock it through htcdev it adds some extra features like flashing things through fastboot.
4. Recovery? CWM is still perfectly fine, but TWRP has been gaining a lot of traction lately and is very nice. Installing it can be a bit troublesome, it's best installed using fastboot and an unlocked HBOOT 1.02 or 1.07.
You do not need to update the radio, bootloader, or recovery to put JB on it though. You can just flash the ROM (full wipe if coming from CM 7.1 of course) and all should be well.

Pons and now Tiny are the only reason I have upgraded to new device. They are keeping a great phone rocking into the future.

I think you meant to say the only reason you havent upgraded - in which case, me too! I've found Tiny's latest CM10.1 nightly (01/26/2013) to be stable. Everything is working for me (GPS, camera, wifi, etc) with the exception of video, automatic brightness, and the preview is occasionally glitchy when taking pictures. The glitchy preview problem can be solved by using something like camera360. Unfortunately, there are no solutions for the automatic brightness and video problems that I know of at the moment...
Stability...your pretty much on it Anything based off 2.3.x will be your best bet in my opinion. GB is rock solid. While its nice to have updated software it comes at a price/missing features etc... It doesn't hurt to try out different roms but i feel in the end you will stay on GB. I switched off the rom in my sig back to Bugless 2.3.7 GB incredikernal EXT4 mod. Haven't looked back.
Latest Radio is in my sig.
