Okay, I am not sure what has been going on. My camera was working fine a week or two ago, but now apparently each time I open it, it will just give me a black screen and eventually ask me to force close or wait. I tried both options, no dice.
I figured someone was messing with my phone and possibly switched it to the front camera when I don't have one, so I tried reformatting the phone (which didn't work), also tried installing some different roms. No luck either.
Anyone have an idea of what's going on?
Any app that needs to use the camera will just get stuck saying Camera is not responding.
Bump!
Anyone have a guess?
I have exactly the same promblem... Is there any solution...?
Try the basic things:
Fix permissions (through CWM or ROM manager)
Or reinstall the camera app.
camera forced closed
I try the basics, also i reinstall the android rom again but nothing...
Is their any damage to your camera? Also have you tried a different rom? When you tried a different rom did you do a task 29? - this is essential because whatever has happened can carry over or be saved and used again on the next ron you install to try and fix the problem

I thought that my camera have promblem and i buy a new one from eBay, but nothing. I install cyanogen Tom 2.3.7. with MGDL 12 (i bought from ebay), after that i can't install anything else, i try but...
I used to have the same problem but with my camcorder/video, every now and then it would just freeze while recording and I would not be able to open the video.
Have you tried to Reinstall Windows Mobile Series.
On Windws. Trying to open Camera Icon.
If Your Phone Get nothing. That Probly camera is damged.
BAD LUCK.

I have done many searches on this topic all over the Blackstone forum and have not found any solution to my problem. I have found a few people that have an error about the camera not initializing or something but that is not my problem.
Soon after I upgraded to WM 6.5 I noticed that my camera would sometimes quit and I would have to soft reset the device to get it working again. This happened more and more often. It got to the point where the camera would not even try to start.
I have tried several different roms and nothing is helping. Since updating to different roms the camera button in the camera tab in TF3D doesn't even show up. All I get is the album. It acts like the camera isn't even there. It does show up in the program menu. If I activate the camera under the programs menu I get nothing or just get taken back to the home page and nothing happens. Depends on the rom.
I found a few threads where people seem to have the same problem I do but usually after three or four posts and no results they just seem to end.
I have also tried installing some of the other camera cab programs. Topaz, Rhodium, Blackstone etc...
Any help would be appreciated.
One last thing. I also switched back to WM 6.1 and still nothing. The only thing I have yet to try is either redo the HSPL or go back to the original stock SPL
---Update---
After three rom updates and many, many, many searches, I found the solution. Using the advanced config tool cab and changing one of the camera settings Encode photos in portrait mode to no the camera has come back to life. I did the soft reset and hit the camera button and nothing happened but a little screen flash and the window's working icon in the middle started then stopped. That has not happened in a while. I hit the button again and it delayed and started and then quit. I tried it one more time and it came on and was able to take a picture. Reminds me of trying to start a cold engine. Prime it then try to turn it over, prime it a little more then maybe some coughing and finally on the third prime. Presto it starts. Very happy again.
i am having the same problem
can you help me plz
what is advanced config tool cab you used
pardon me my english not that good but what are the steps you did in simple language plz
my phone has WM6.1 and standard rom 1.14.415.2 build 32434 wwe
thanks in advanced

I did the not save in portrait mode thing and it worked for me. Thanks. I've spent many hours on this. Great!
It didnt work!
I tried just as you said with the "advance config tool" abd the problem persist.
Any idea?
I think it is hardware probelm. Initially it works with some software tinkering (actual steps vary with different devices, infact may be be coincidental / immaterial in help) and becomes harder and harder as time passes and ulimately fails even on stock ROM/SPL.
Hi all. I've got the same problem. Nothing helps. Maybe i need just to overwrite drivers, instead of installing camera soft?? May anyone send me camera dll files?
Hi All,
I have a problem where my phone crashes and reboots when I launch an app that uses the camera in any way, for example layar, barcode scanner, camera etc. This only happens in Android 2.1, I've tried various ROMs and always the same issue. I've tested Android 1.5 and there are no problems with that at all.
I've noticed the crashes only occur when I'm on battery power, it never happens when the phone is plugged in so I cannot get logs to see what is going on, unless someone knows a way to get the logs from a crash.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem and if so, if they've found a resolution to it.
Since updating with the OTA 2.1 update I have been experiencing this problem too. Phone reboots when it uses the camera, Layar, Yelp, AugSatNav all seem to cause the problem.
I get this problem too, with the camera, and also sometimes when I put the volume down it freezes and reboots
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I've got the same problem. Restarting when launching apps using the camera.. Im glad that's not a HW problem but "only" SW bug.. I hope
It could (and probably is) a radio issue....Happens on the N1 and Desire if you try to use the camera too and seeing as the GPS,Camera both are dependant on the radio id say that is it! Find the radio reccomended with the rom you use and flash it( Beware of orange users being locked down though, you need a specific radio)
Just to add that I'm getting the same problem too running FroydVillain 1.2.2 and baseband 6.35.15.14, should point out that been having the problem for quite a while on a multitude of ROMs :-(
I'm not - did you full wipe?
Multiple wipes...
try 1.3 i guess
I had this problem when I was on stock 2. 1 I would recommend rooting and flashing froydvillain.

Tried multiple ROMs and multiple Radios with no change :-(
Unless theres a second secret wipe button hidden in recovery I don't know what else I can do :-/
try to disable "automatic brightness"...

Hi,
I have had this problem since i went to 2.1 also, i have also flashed several rom's since villainrom 12 and have even used rcmix 1.0b which is a great 2.1 imo.
Have flashed 2.2 roms, and i am still having the same problem.
This is how i can replicate this problem and how it occurs, to the letter.
1.Bring phone out of lockscreen.
2.Open camera.
3.Take pic, in dark or light lighting with brightness on any setting.
4.Save pic.
5.Close camera.
6.Lock phone and wait for 10 seconds.
7.Bring phone out of lockscreen.
8.Open camera.
9.Phones lights all go out and the hero name flashes up onto the screen.
10.Full reboot.
This happens everytime no matter what.
Some things to consider.
The phone will never reboot if it is plugged in to a usb / electric plug Charger and is actually charging.
The phone will remain on and will carry on taking pictures IF you don't close out of the camera the first time around.
No task killer was installed on my phone at the time of this test, although i have had task killers before with the same results.
Lighting effects and brightness can sometimes have an effect on the ratio and probablility of a reboot, with brightness on full in a dark room being the most probable.
I am using the newest froyd rom 1.4.3 although i have tried pretty much every rom out there, I NEVER have this error when i installed a 1.5 rom which does not have apps2sd (weird that) which tells me that it is NOT a hardware fault.
I am using villains no logo kernel 19mhz - 691mhz
63.18.55.06PH_6.35.15.14 Radio
HTC Hero on Orage UK.
IF anybody can shed any light on this rather annoying matter resulting in this problem being erradicated will earn my eternal respect and a big clock. : )

I can confirm that this isn't a bug on every install of 2.1 or 2.1 as I am unable to replicate the issue as described. Also if you've tried mutiple software and the bug is occurring across many that would suggest it is something hardware related or you are not performing a full wipe. Have you tried backing up the data on your sd card and formatting that then putting back only the necessary data (pics / music etc)?

I originally posted this issue and the descriptions from everyone else with the problem match mine pretty much perfectly.
I've taken all info off the sd card and performed a complete wipe of data, ext and davlik before formatting the sd card. I've put the blank SD card (apart from the ROM I'm about to flash) back into the phone and flashed. After config and before any new apps are installed on the phone I launch the camera and within 4 attempts at start the camera the phone will crash. This has happened across every 2.1 ROM I've tried, but doesn't happen on 1.5 ROMs.
Using the stock camera app? Have you tried without installing any of your own apps at all?
This is very odd. No matter what I try I can't get the camera app to crash. Though I am using v2.2 of android. Have you tried official 2.1? Vanilla and Sense?

Yep, it crashes using the stock app.
I've tried a rooted version of the offical but not the actual OTA update. I've not tried vanilla as I don't really want to run vanilla on it.
I've managed to take some logcat logs of the problem happening but there's nothing really specifc happening over a few crashes that would point to anything. .
I'm going to try to unroot my hero and downgrade to stock to start again. Just have to find a way to downgrade my bootloader first so I can put on the original RRU. I tried to downgrade before but got an invalid bootloader error.
The camera crash doesn't really affect me day to day as I don't really use the camera, where it is annoying is it stops you using apps that use the camera like goggles and layar.
Ahh - so its not the camera app that is crashing but other apps too which are using the camera. Very odd.
And FYI - you don't need to touch your bootloader - just change the driver in windows to My HTC instead of HTC Bootloader and the rru will work.

I have formatted and re partitioned my sd card to a T and it still occurs and thats with everytime i install a new rom, i don't use titanium i go the long way around every time and re set up all my programs, I know i can replicate this error like i said and like i also said this does not occur in 1.5 roms.
I have also have this problem with vanilla, modaco's new one, villain rom, rcmix, froyd, it appears that ever since the phone was updated to 2.1 there is a problem when using the camera app.
I have tried to install a rom and replicate the issue without installing any apps at all and it still persists, the only thing i can say is that it doesn't happen when i'm either on 1.5 OR the phone is charging?
It sounds like the the phone is requesting access for use of the camera and then not putting back what it requested in the first place, like a cache or something, and it simply make the phone reboot when it is called upon again.
I don't believe it is a hardware fault, i know this sounds like wishful thinking but the phone does not have this error in 1.5 roms. Thus, it cannot be hardware. Simple!
Also a logcat does not show anything, i was only able to replicate the error once whilst my phone was plugged in, it just won't do it again, and when i posted my findings on villainroms bug report section, a few of the lads still didn't know what it was so i don't know what else to say.
I'm due for an upgrade in October so for me at least it's not that much of a deal but i'm planning on giving this phone to my daughter so it would be good to get it working for her.
Would save me a lot of earache.
If u need to know anything else then please let me know, oh and i am using a class 2 sd card, which i have been unable to change, however just today my girlfriend has just had a class six delivered and her old one will be up for grabs so i will test with that too. Has anyone else tried with multiple cards??? Also how do i find out what boot loader i am using (recover) as maybe the problem resides there.

Thats right, its any app which accesses the camera.
What could be the correlation between connecting the charger and not connecting the charger, could that be a power issue and the battery is delivering too low a power output on it's own to run the camera? Hence it works with the charger plugged in ?? Either way i think that is the only real clue there is to be honest, unless your phones still restart when the phone is plugged in, in which case it's not much use.
The camera on my evo used to work fine. Within the last week or two I've had a problem with it not opening. It just shows a picture of the camera and then shows a black screen.
I've read that it could be caused by apps that use the camera but I have none. I did a reset on my phone and that did nothing either. How can I fix this!?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
by picture of the camera then black screen, what do you mean?
the camera works for a moment, or that just the camera button shows up then nothing?
If a hard reset doesnt work, that means its hardware related, not software. Take it to sprint and have then look at if and give you a replacement.
hope this helps.
intially i had that problem too took it into sprint and found out it was advanced task killer that was interferring with my camera. after that had been taken off a couple months down the road my video camera stopped working, but my camera was fine. trial and error it turns out the new google maps is what's messing with it. always check what apps you've recently updated and uninstall those updates, just back track till the camera works again

Try clearing the camera data by going to settings, applications, manage applications, and click on the camera app and then clear data.
Also are you rooted and what ROM are you using? Maybe you can just reflash the ROM.
I was rooted with stock sense but I unrooted after the hard reset didnt work.
Also, I bought my evo through bestbuy, can I still go to a Sprint store and get a replacement? I don't have phone insurance either.

It could be the Kernel you are using, if you have a newer hardware version with a new camera/driver then flash a Kernel that supports the new hardware/driver.
I hope this helps My friend had this same problem and he fixed it buy flashing a new Kernel. Good luck.
Edit: Never mind I just reread your last post and seen you unrooted and still have the problem. So yeah your best bet would be to call Sprint.
Hey guys.
I've been using CM7 for about a month now, currently in the 010911 Nightly.
Everthing was fine until this past week, when the camera of my phone started to have strange freezes and lags. Then, one time, it FCed and when I turned it back on, the display was inverted, and colors were all strange and washed off.
I've rebooted, cleaned the data, etc, etc, and nothing fix the issue. Keep in mind that there's nothing with the tilt sensor. It's something software related.
I remember seeing a fix for a similar problem a while back, but I searched this hole forum and couldn't find anything, so, I beg for your help.
Thanks a lot!
Sorry for the bump, guys. But I really need some light with this problems.
Try clearing Camera app data or switch to another nightly.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, I already tried both things you suggested, with no luck.
Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but is the boot mode set to 2nd init by default ?!
You can also try using other camera apps like Vignette.

dude, we are on the same boat. Tell me when u find a solution.
A temporary fix which i m not sure till when its gonna last but is working for the moment.
open camera, leave it opened and pull the battery. put the battery again after 2 mins and see if it helps you. Its working for me at the moment but dont know the logic behind the process.
I already got my camera hardware replaced but this problem happened again just after rooting the phone.
I have the same problem and I'm almost sure it is a hardware failure. Maybe after a shock or drop. I'll open my unit this week and see what's wrong. Did some of you manage to fix it?
I've even tried flashing full stock sbf without success, so I'd blame the camera module.
I have a Samsung Epic 4G, I got it in March of 2011. About 6 months ago the camera started acting up. It would work once (take one picture), then the next time I took a picture or opened the app it would say there was a error with com.android.camera. I could restart the phone and the camera would work again, but break after one use.
I took it to the Sprint store, they did a quick test and said it was not the hardware (I think he tested the wiring)
I did a factory reset, it worked for a day then went back to the same pattern
Then I installed CM7, the camera worked for a day then it completely stopped working (the app wouldn't load).
I installed other camera applications. Retro camera worked some of the time (one shot then break). I think "Fun Camera" loaded, and I could use the front facing camera but the main camera was dark.
I added the camera.zip and camerafirmware.zip to the system/app folder, but couldn't install them (after changing the ext to .apk).

I feel like I'm running out of options, so I wanted to post this up on XDA and see if anyone else has had issues like this, and see what additional steps I could take to fix the camera. I don't know too much about Android but I think I'm tech savvy enough to try anything with the right links to tutorials. Thanks all.
Have you tried going back to stock el30?
See if it works on stock if it continues to force close... take it back to sprint and show them, and they usually give you a replacement if of course it still force closes, and you have TEP you could get one for 35$ I think.

Have you ever updated your camera firmware (from BML Stock?), I know that this has benefited me in the past..........however, once you are on CM9, it' a new camera from ICS .......sounds like your issue follows your firmware.........Not a fix, but have you considered a 3rd party camera app?

Thanks guys. I factory reset my phone before and it still had the issue, I will definitely keep the Samsung warranty as a backup (don't want to send in my phone if I dont have to).
How do I update the camera firmware? I've tried other cameras, retro camera works but only sort of, another camera app works for the front facing cam but not the main rear facing one.

Factory Reset?.......you mean at the sprint store?...........or do you mean you did a factory reset, wiping your data (but leaving your firmware + bad camera untouched)............you can re-install a fresh version of your firmware w/out voiding your warranty, from the sprint website..........or else, as stated above, take your device to the store + let them do it...........that said, camera ZOOM FX has a dandy of a camera that you can DL from the market...........if it works, one more clue where your problem is coming from.
