[Q] Failed to get NonMarketApp rights - Galaxy Tab General

I downloaded SuperOneClick, and ultimately failed to get the the non-market apps to be allowed. I used an early version to root and tried the NMA there, but it failed. I found SOC vers 2.1.1ShortFuse, and tried that, but no luck either.
I have an AT&T Galaxy tab 7" model SGH-I987 (refurb'd) I bought in August.
It has FROYO vers 2.2 on it with a kernel vers of 2.6.32.9.
I really wanted to get to 2.3 with the NMA access, but I thought I'd do this one step at a time.
What can I do now?

Did you go to settings / applications / and tick "unknown sources" to allow non-market apps?

Installing apps from unknown sources

The carrier I have on the samsung galaxy s, doesn't allow installation of unknown sources, which is hurting me for legit reasons.
I've seen a few tutorials out there for rooting the samsung galaxy S (captivate) and was wondering if that would allow installation of unknown sources?
This is the tutorial I was going to follow if I can install what I want

Thanks in advance
Installing app from other source other than the market is easy and you don't need rooting. Go to setting, application and tick' unknown source' and you should be able to install anything.

He said it's the carrier, US carriers (cough, only AT&T I think) and maybe some others do this. You might be right for his case, but specifically calls out the "captivate" which is the name it goes by on AT&T. On AT&T I think you do actually need a root.
@OP
And the answer should be yes, once you root you'll be able to change your ROM and/or firmware, I'm not familiar with the support on captivate so go here where they deal with your issue specifically: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728121 as their might be non-rooting methods to get non-market apps installed.
Good luck.
Good luck too!
Thanks so much for the link
After reading a few pages, a link to this tool was provided, which makes it soooooooo easy. Nothing really to it, just connect your phone to your computer, use this tool and select the apk you want to install and click a button.
Amazing fast workaround for the stupid limitation that AT&T put in.....

Do I have root access?

So I just bought a refurbed unit from Acer and I wanted to rent a movie from Google. Went in to the video application to watch it and it says that the application is not supportee on rooted devices. How can I tell for sure if I have root access or not? I actually don't really want it as this thing is just fine for me without it. If it is indeed rooted is there any way to reverse it?

There is a app on the market called root checker..
with it being a refurb its very likely that your tab is a OPEN Box Someone rooted did not like and returned.. If this is the case you will need to find a full not rooted rom to flash to your device..
you can also tell if you are root by looking for any of the fallowing apps in your app drawer
root checker
busybox.
Su superuser
su updater app
Acer Recovery Installer..
post back with more about your system and rom verion and you can be better helped..

In the Android Market, there's a free app called Root Checker Basic. All the app does is check the status of your tab to tell you if it's rooted or not.
As a first step, I'd start there and see what it says your root status is.
Good luck to you....
Thanks guys, root checker says I do NOT have a rooted device, which is good news for me, but now I have to figure out why my google videos is not working. Or just ignore it and not use google vids because they're uncool bungholes who wont let people with root access stuff that they paid for. Netflix anyone?

I have netflix and it works very well. thou i do not like to use the app to add movies to my que . i do that thru browser when i hit play it opens the app.
Wish i could help with the google videos issue. But i do not use that . as well as not heard anything about them. You might could try the google android support. but its kinda lame..
Also go into setting / about tablet then / system updates.
to run update check.. current version is 3.2.1 ..
And you are very welcome

[Q] why are some apps developed to need root access?

guys, I'm very new to android app development. just made a few very basic apps
A friend asked me about a firewall I'm using, if she can use one on her phone, she's on a samsung galaxy pocket running gingerbread. and I found out there are no firewall apps for her phone that doesn't need root access. but on my nexus 4 (stock JB 4.3) and a indian rebranded device (stock JB 4.2) there are many firewall apps that don't need root access. so it made me think if they could make and app that doesn't need root access for a certain function. why would they create apps that do? what exactly is the difference between creating and app without root access and one that has?
Apps with root access can change and edit the preinstalled system files of your mobile.but without root it is not possible.the apps running on your device are not compatible on gingerbread because app uses the new framework which is not present in gingerbread.otherwise there is no difference .galaxy pocket running 4+ will be able to run those apps

Root Loss

so im completely lost. after flashing a new rom yesterday, custumizing i have seem to have "lost root". superuser was working fine and i was doing things that require root. today it just stops working and i cant get root access on anything. i installed a root checker and it says i dont have root. what gives? so i was rooted yesterday and today im magically not rooted? should i just start all over and root my phone again using de la vegas tool? any suggestions to what the problem and solution will be greatly appreciated
by the way this has happened to me on quite number of roms but not to this extent where i literally have no root acess. on the other roms superuser just decided it didnt want to work anymore and i was able to fix it by unistalling it and installing a different superuser. but know i can even uninstall this one since it built into the system and you need root to unistall/delete the apk

Friend of mine just lost root on his Note 3 too. I wanted to show him some program requiring root and he was surprised he had no root anymore. Could be some Samsung silent update?
After you flash you lose root. That's how it is. Unless you use custom ROM that it's rooted by default. If you flashed Stock Rom, just go ahead and root it again.

You may have to reinstall super user and / or make super user a systems app. See screen shot from super user

Root for SCH-i815 LP11 (Verizon)

Even though this device is older, some of us still must be using this device. I wanted to pass on that Cydia Impactor can allow Root on the SCH-i815 w/LP11 update. Stock recovery and all...
Didn't work for me. I got bugs not found.

new - tab 7.7 i815 looking for roms and what to do..see below
Using the Samsung galaxy tab 7.7 or aka i815 to play around on, .. looking to learn how to root and install custom roms.. a learning tab for me. im new.
where im at... I used kingroot to root the tab, root check says im rooted with 4.0.4 (ice-cream sandwich) downloaded titanium back up.. yet not sure if that for backing up my system before playing with roms or just for adding/deleting and backing up certain apps.
all this was done using play store apps..
any advice would be great. where to go for step by step for this tab to get custom roms or maybe a better root if kingroot is not acceptable.
Thanks all.
